The Trigger collab animation came out and it’s the best thing Transformers has done in the current decade.
Truly a love letter to Transformers from G1 to EarthSpark, it squeezes in everything it possibly can from most media. However the catch is that it’s only animated media and the live action movies, the comics (any assorted manga, Marvel, Dreamwave, IDW & Skybound) aren’t referenced, while some Japanese exclusive stuff gets a lil’ bit more attention (understandable since it’s, y’know, Japanese fans being nostalgic about the anime they grew up with).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Transformers Go, Q-Transformers, and the Beast Wars anime got particular attention.
Tumblr media
This shot of Liger Megatron and Green Lion Lio Convoy is especially cool.
I think initially I was expecting a Trigger animated greatest hits from select moments from each show, and while they still technically do that in spots…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s mostly a mega crossover with different characters interacting otherwise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it’s all the better for it.
I mean where else are you gonna find TFA Optimus about to smash Masterforce Overlord’s face in?
Tumblr media
There’s no real narrative, it’s just random cool shots though the closest thing to a framing device is the PV opening with Vector Prime looking down on Cybertron across all time lines.
Regarding EarthSpark’s contributions to the short, they’re minimal. The Terrans and Mandroid don’t appear at all, which is a little bizarre.
ES Megatron appears among the other Decepticon leaders instead of being with ES Optimus on the Autobot leader side.
Tumblr media
You’d think Mandroid would be there next to BWII Galvatron instead, but I guess not. Sadly they omitted RiD15 Steeljaw too, instead using RiD15 Megatronus Prime’s floating head.
SatAM Robotnik voice: Ah well, life is not perfect.
The main ES rep are the Maltos.
Tumblr media
This just reinforces ES needed to be 2D, because they actually look good. Roche’s style doesn’t work in 3D.
Anyway the human cast they chose for this final shot amuses me.
Tumblr media
Love seeing my favorite Clays being included. The lack of RiD Steeljaw (G1 Steeljaw did appear with Lio Junior and RiD15 Aerobolt though) is forgiven.
Anyhow, the specific use of the Clays, the (S3) Witwickys, the Maltos and the Onishis (this is especially funny since Koji’s mom never met her universe’s Optimus) is somehow very random, but also kinda appropriate. Like I get Spike and Dot’s families, since it serves as bookends, but the Clays and Onishis still feel a bit random. Still, including both Robots in Disguise families is a nice touch in my book!
The short ends with a different bookend as mentioned.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What starts out as G1 Prime & Megs transitions to ES Prime & Megs shaking hands. The old with the current series. It works~! I admit I’m surprised they didn’t include TFONE somehow. I know it’s technically not out yet, but there’s enough material to have had Orion and D-16 have some kind of tussle. It would’ve been an interesting way to tie it into the above scene and this one:
Tumblr media
When it comes to general rep, the stuff that gets the most focus is G1, Beast Wars, Animated, & Galaxy Force. Cyberverse doesn’t really get anything beyond the leader shot, but there is this awesome but very random shot of Croaton over looking Holi’s Rescue Patrol walking on a beach littered with the dead bodies of the generic Decepticons from “War Dawn”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sucks to be you guys.
It also occurs to me the Rescue Bots cartoons appear to be omitted along with BotBots, but that might partly be due to them not having Japanese releases? I’m not sure, but it’s funny how Q-Transformers is acknowledged of all things, but not Heatwave or Burgertron. Maaaaybe that’s for the best on the later…
Still the PV is a blast and is pry the most earnest passion project that GETS Transformers vs what we’ve been getting post Aligned cartoon wise.
I still hope this leads to a proper TF anime series made by Trigger, like what happened with Gridman. We need a return to good 2D animated TF shows and not more CGI slop like WFC or S2 ES. That Beast Wars and Machines are still superior despite being retro by today’s standards says something…
The catch however is the original video is region locked…
Tumblr media
but some fans have ripped it and posted it on their YT:
youtube
So go check it out while you can! It’s pure Energon-y goodness!

Creative Challenge Day 9: mentorship
It was the day the class 2 academy bots would get their mentors. As one could imagine, they were very excited. "Who do you think we're going to get, Sludge?" "I don't know Snarl, but I hope they have a cool alt mode!" The minicon squawked a bit at that, and the femme dinobot responded, "Oh, you didn't know? We get to scan an additional alt mode based on our mentors. It's tradition, or something." After completing Ratchet's assessment, they went to the hall where the Spacebridge is to receive the results. "This wasn't as easy as the first year mentor picks- I had to widen the search parameters for some of you. Let's start with the two that didn't need that. Sludge and Snarl, here's your mentor." Boulder stepped forward. "It's nice to finally have this role." "Eh, what does he know about dinobot stuff?" Boulder goes into his dinobot mode. "Quite a bit, actually." Snarl turns to look at Sludge. "Dibs." "Ok, next up, Slash. Here's your mentor." A femme police bot stepped out of the crowd. "Hey, weren't you part of the Crown City team?" "Yes, I was, and I've heard you're a great tracker too. Let's see what we can do together." It was then Laserbeak's turn, and that bird minicon got a bigger bird minicon by the name of Aerobolt. "Well, that's all for today..." "Wait, where's my mentor?" "Oh, he couldn't make it today, too busy working on something. He'll be around later, I'm sure." This answer was enough for her for now. Later that day, in private, Ratchet was trying to work out how his machine picked out the bot it did for her. How was that bot even an option, given everything he had done in the past...

I couldn’t not do something with that ridiculous owl and hawk pic floating around. Fritz gets a little territorial as the resident flying minicon.

What would the weaponizer Minicons get at McDonald's.
Aerobolt is a lot like Optimus. He's very kind and polite as hes being served, just without the lectures. He would stick to just french fries, and would like just water. He doesn't like salad he hasn't seen prepared first hand, so fries are the most convenient.
I got nothing for Bashbreaker. There's NO content WHATSOEVER. Literally he's just kinda...there. he's cute though, so get him a cookie, those seem safe enough.
Buzzstrike (aka the cutest/most handsome mini of them all) likes the hot and spicy mcChicken, with a side of medium fries. He would also like a caramel sundae (or the strawberry sundae, he isnt picky)with peanuts please. He likes when he gets an apple pie and shoves it in there, kinda like an apple pie al a mode. He would like a lemonade as well. He often gets extra nut pouches and an extra cookie simply by smiling. He's a BIT of a heart throb.
Lancelon; same as Bashbreaker.
Sawtooth gets a double filet o' fish and fries. Hes fine with just water. Hes a delight in the drive thru for his simplicity.
Tricerashot is the bitch who says hes not hungry, then bugs everyone else in the car for food. Just get him some hot cakes, sausage, hashbrowns, and a small orange juice. He'll bitch that he said hes not hungry, but really he just didn't want to be a bother.
Windstrike is the same as Lancelon and Bashbreaker.

So the tragic box office on TFONE has been blamed on the marketing, making it look more… doofy than it actually was.
Turns out the marketing might’ve been based on an earlier version of the movie.
Tumblr media
This actually explains so much.
I’ve heard some describe the final movie as still having Despicable Me like humor, but I get the feeling this earlier draft might’ve been much closer to that. I suspect the running gag of “Badassatron” might’ve been a carry over, and is definitely the worst joke in the film.
RiD15 would’ve have had some more love here, as Aerobolt was originally intended to be part of the story.
Tumblr media
Funny enough he might’ve been the only Mini-Con rep in the film, as well as adding additional Mechanimals besides the deer bots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While Aerobolt’s role isn’t specified, concept art seems to suggest he was connected to Alpha Trion, as it looks like he’s leading the Miners right to him.
I sort of wonder if that inspired Whirlwing, a bird like companion of Megatron in the ONE toy line.
Tumblr media
In a funny coincidence, the toy is based on the Cyclone Mini-Con Hammer, also from RiD15.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Megatron’s toy that’s packaged with Whirlwing is a retool of RiD15 Overload.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They could’ve easily just repainted Overload’s pack in Mini-Con Backtrack…
Tumblr media
But they specifically chose to give Megatron the bird, so I can’t help but think this was a reference to Aerobolt.
Aerobolt in RiD15 Transforms into some kind of shield thing.
Tumblr media
Which, when equipped in-show, has Optimus turn into his Gundam Wing mode.
Tumblr media
I wonder had they retained that, if Aerobolt was the Zoar of the story, and would’ve granted Prince Adam, er, Orion Pax The Touch, The Power, lol.
Perhaps most bafflingly though, is despite intending to use a bird character, they bizarrely skipped entirely over Laserbeak.
Tumblr media
And if you consider Whirlwing Megatron’s pet, it’s especially odd, as Megatron is especially fond of Laserbeak in the old cartoon.
Tumblr media
It’s especially odd as an accepted fandom joke is Laserbeak is the symbol of leadership among the Decepticons. Even Cyberverse references this in its finale.
Tumblr media
It’s even weirder when you realize Soundwave doesn’t have ANY of his cassettes, not even any of his flight capable ones in Laserbeak, Buzzsaw, RatBat and Squawktalk. I guess Rumble, Overkill and the others weren’t high enough for the High Guard.
Still if by some miracle we get more of the ONE universe, maybe D-16 will have Laserbeak perched on his shoulder by then, and they find a way to do the same with Orion and Aerobolt. Both of them having pet birds would just be funny to me anyway, lol.

Inventing new weapons and gadgets today in the Allspark Studio is Autobot mad scientist Wheeljack!  Is he really most adept at driving in car mode, or is he secretly great at driving that Cybertronian sized race car that no one has ever seen?  Tune in after the break to find out!
Man, I wanted Wheeljack so bad as a kid.  He was a mad scientist, I wanted to be a bad scientist.  He got to play with dinosaurs, I wanted to play with dinosaurs.  On top of it all, he was a cool racecar with a tough sounding voice.  Also, my brother got him the same Christmas I got Perceptor, and while I was elated to get a Transformer microscope, I wanted BOTH.  Queue a few years of childhood jealousy and me constantly sneaking Wheeljack out to hang with Perceptor.  😀
None of the Wheeljack figures we have had in the past really scratched my itch to get G1 Wheeljack.  Alternators (a line I am not a fan of) gave us a WJ with an American car mode in the wrong colors.  The United/Generations mold nailed the colors, but the proportions were off and that limited the poseability.  Combiner Wars/Unite Warriors got us the closest yet to nailing Classic Wheeljack, which is funny, considering that mold started as Combiner Wars Breakdown.  While the Masterpiece Wheeljack is the best G1 Wheeljack to date, not everyone can afford to collect the MP line, so a solid “CHUG” update was still needed.
Does the WFC Earthrise Wheeljack make the grade?  Let’s take a look!
  Car Mode
Earthrise Wheeljack’s car mode takes a lot of cues from the G1 Lancia Stratos without being so close that Hasbro and Takara have to pay licensing fees.  The basic shape, the cockpit, the grill, colors and branding (style only) are carried over and then made something unique to the Earthrise mold.  I can definitely appreciate what they did here, and I love the flat sleekness of this mold as its own thing, but it does not fully hit the mark on really looking like Wheeljack.  I think the flatness of the car is nice but ultimately takes away from it really pulling off the classic Wheeljack look.
Wheeljack’s branding/advertising is also reimagined.  Characters like Aerobolt, Swerve and Ricochet are referenced.  Locations are mentioned as well, such as Iacon, Praxus, and Velocitron.  Wheeljack’s racing numbers have been changed here again, from 539 to 638.  Again, it’s not the G1 branding, which likely would have incurred licensing fees.
Even so, this is a great reimaging, so I will take that for what it is.  I still like this figure A LOT.  EA Wheeljack has great car mode that is nice to look at and will be fun for kids to play with.
Robot Mode
Getting EA Wheeljack into robot mode is also fun.  It has a decent amount of complexity without being impossible.  I won’t break down all the steps here, but it is another case of taking cues from the G1 figure and then making it something new at the same time.
Once you get him transformed, you will see how great he is.  The articulation is top notch, he balances well, and his shoulders give off the strongest vibe of “MP-Lite” due to the similarity of design the molds share here.  EA Wheeljack’s design again takes some classic cues with the canopy as a chest, the G1 head, and his spoiler “wingtips” that poke out from the back, giving you a decent G1 Wheeljack.
Why do I say decent and not phenomenal?  The spoiler tips are the wrong color, the leg markings are a little plain, and the base white is…not white.  Honestly, had they given Wheeljack the same shade of white that Walgreen’s Ratchet was given, it would have bumped him up in my opinion significantly.
Pre-yellowed plastic is never a good thing, and I think I end up preferring United Wheeljack’s robot mode to that of EA Wheeljack, simply because it nails the cartoon shape and colors way better.  Two other areas of concern are that the head has limited range of motion for a ball-jointed piece and the gun/missile launcher is a bit puny.
Final Thoughts
None of this is not to say that EA Wheeljack is a bad toy.  The articulation is great, the poseability is better than that of most figures, and he does give off the same “masterpiece at normal retail prices” that so many of the WFC figures have had as of late.  He is fun in both modes and looks really good in both modes.  He is not the perfect update to G1 Wheeljack for a few reasons, and yet I cannot find any real reasons to dislike the toy.
Should there be a chance to get another version of this mold with whiter white, I think I would place it on a scale of 98/100 Energon Cubes.  As is, I’d say it’s more 90/100, so Earthrise Wheeljack still comes highly recommended.  Add him to your Autobot Science Brigade NOW!
WFC Earthrise E-6 Wheeljack Gallery and Review! Inventing new weapons and gadgets today in the Allspark Studio is Autobot mad scientist Wheeljack!  Is he really most adept at driving in car mode, or is he secretly great at driving that Cybertronian sized race car that no one has ever seen?

Do you accept newcomers
// Mun speaking - and for the moment, I can only answer, maybe?
// First off, I probably rushed into things when I made this “clever little toaster’s” blog. I wanted to RP him from his first appearance in RiD Season 2.5> Made a blog, dove in head-first… then they just packed all the Minis (except Fixit, of course) off into space at the end of the 6 episode arc, never to be heard from again. And in the end, only Aerobolt got to do anything useful in rescuing them all; Buzz ended up just a cute, brightly colored MacGuffin.
// I felt let down and decided that my version would stay behind on Earth when the others left; another player claimed  two of his brothers and had them stay behind as well. Buzz had some good interactions - but I also made a couple of missteps as an RPer, and ended up just losing his muse for a long time.
// A few weeks ago while chatting with his brothers’ mun (who also writes Squeaker), Buzzstrike started to pipe up again, just a little. I got an idea to explain why he went missing for so long. That resulted in his current active thread - which is also a test, to see if his muse is going to stick around for a while again. So far, so good - I’m keeping my fingers crossed though.
// The key is, we have been plotting the heck out of that thread. So talk to me off anon, or send an ask with your blog’s URL if it’s a sideblog, so I can answer privately. If we can come up with a good plot I’m certainly willing to try!
