Water-activated tapes are dry and non-adhesive until the starch-based adhesive comes into contact with water, at which point they become super-adhesive and may be applied to surfaces such as boxes or envelopes for the ultimate sealing. Self-Adhesive Paper Tape is manufactured by applying a polymer-based release coating to the top layer of kraft paper and a hot melt adhesive to the bottom layer of kraft paper. This multilayered substrate tape is sold and marketed as an environmentally benign alternative to plastic tapes, although this is not the case.
