UN PROPHÈTE [JACQUES AUDIARD 2009]
speaking parts’ recap
'By filmmaker Jacques Audiard’s own estimation, what happens is the “anti-Scarface,” a gangster epic of brutal, tragic and emphatically unromantic self-actualization. It’s also a parable of modern France, and maybe the first to touch this particular bundle of nerves with this much force since Albert Camus. Audiard’s arty but forthright storytelling has just the right ratio of rigor and elasticity to counterpoint the pulpy enormity of his protagonist’s arc; it’s all so determinedly, engrossingly well-played—and just as well-cast, with nonpro newcomer Tahar Rahim as the self-made thug and Niels Arestrup as the mob boss presiding over his sprawling odyssey of unsentimental education. It may be grim, but ultimately it’s a story of survival, both topical and timeless.'

- Fill out a parole application. I'll have it treated in priority. In the meantime, you can go on leave. You go out for me, you come back, and you get paid. What do you say? - What's the risk? - There is no risk. Staying here is the only risk.

Rock the Casbah

Rock the Casbah    [trailer]
The whole family is reunited when Sofia comes back for her father's funeral. Quickly, inner problems are revealed.
Especially at the beginning the scenes and the dialogue doesn't quite flow. It often felt stilted. Though it gets better during the course of the film. Or maybe I just got used to it.
There are so many conflicts. Everybody seems discontent and complains about things that happened in the past. The big "reveal" at the end doesn't come as a big surprise.
It does show the disadvantages women have in that part of the world. But also that some family conflicts are the same everywhere.
Side note, I noticed Alexandre Aja's name in the credits as being a producer, which I found surprising. Turns out he's married to director Laïla Marrakchi.

OH MY....goodness.....

(Hopefully by this point you’ve finished the first two episodes of ‘War of the Worlds’, the kind of person who isn’t bothered by spoilers, or are just deciding if you still want to keep watching.)

I don’t know why I was surprised how grim the show is. Maybe even with the ‘aggressive aliens’ plot-line...I was hoping for....I don’t know...something!
Geez! ‘A Private War’ wasn’t this grim!
So...what’s the solution? Is it that there is something needed to be tweaked? Because if this continues...the show might get a similar end to the title Vince Gilligan mentions in an episode of the ‘Better Call Saul’ podcast. There is basically no release. Usually that release...is a light moment.
--------
HIGHLIGHTS:
Helen offering Bill to wear Chris’ runners
The last scene reveal with Sarah’s reaction seeing the aliens.

My verdict of the episode: 6/10
