#Playhouse #MTC Kiss of the Spider Woman, 1990 musical by Kander & Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago) & Terence McNally, from Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel. As in K&E’s earlier works the contrast between a tawdry reality and glittering fantasy drives the show, but in the first half the disjunction between soapy film glamour and the Buenos Aires torture & death prison is disconcerting and jarring; but it’s supposed to be. The second half is magnificent and the climax deeply shocking (there was a gasp in the theatre) and completely unsettling. Ainsley Melham & Adam-Jon Fiorentino are great leads and Caroline O'Connor magnificent as the strangely human diva. Praise to Dean Bryant’s direction & the whole team. HI YES OKAY I LOVE THE BOYS SO MUCH!??? i saw the show twice in sydney and i think i fell in love with them even more the second time im just? LISTEN. THEYRE SO SWEET AND GOOD. i love kassim the most but also, that almost hurts to say bc theyre a trio and are perfect as a trio idk??? IM EMOTIONAL OVER THEM AND IM SAD THAT THERE IS LIKE, 0 FANWORKS FOR THEM BECAUSE THEY DESERVE SO MUCH
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i mean, they’re criminally underdeveloped as characters (ROYAL CHOREOGRAPHER IS NOT A REAL JOB AND IT’S SHAMEFUL THAT SOMETHING THAT CAMP WAS THE ONLY VIABLE OPTION THEY COULD THINK OF TO ROUND OUT THE TRIO, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE SHOW IS SO INSISTENTLY HETEROSEXUAL ABOUT EVERYTHING ELSE, BABKAK IS FRANKLY OFFENSIVE, NOT TO MENTION LAZILY WRITTEN), but i take great joy in watching what the actors do with them every night, it’s the little background things that keep me going and also give me a thousand plotbunnies oh my god troy sussman i hate that you’re trying to pull focus in ‘high adventure’ but also by god do i appreciate how often you change things up a little
and tbh the flashmob scene (is it just called ‘babkak omar aladdin kassim’?????? w/e it’s the flashmob scene in my head bc i’m STILL waiting on the promotional flashmob in federation square, THE SCENE IS JUST BEGGING FOR IT) and ‘high adventure’ are honestly some of my favourite songs, and the boys mucking around in the background are the only bearable thing about that fucking dungeon scene (STRUCTURE, PEOPLE. TWENTY MINUTES OF FILLER AND THREE MINUTES OF DRAMATIC CLIMAX IS NOT HOW YOU WRITE A SECOND ACT), so, y’know. i have a Slight Obsession.
honestly though, fkin kudos to adam-jon fiorentino for taking kassim, who is frankly also quite basically written, and making him such a joy to watch????? his face is just so EXPRESSIVE and his stupid biceps, jesus christ. i have a lot of feelings about the group dynamics (HONESTLY, WHERE TF DOES ALADDIN FIT IN, it’s taking it too seriously and using a LOT of speculation, but it’s fascinating to explore the possibilities amongst those four) (but also they all have these, like, friendship necklaces, but aladdin takes his off for the second act, and i mean, that just. perfectly encapsulates everything that’s missed with the writing there, because he’s the Protagonist, so he has to be Exceptional, and honestly, it’s a bit weird that the other three are so lumped together and underdeveloped while Al is Protagonist-ing all over the place) (altho ainsley melham
and i hate the writing but also omar broken my heart
anyroad, on the fanworks note................................................... :|a couple of colleagues made jokes/reference to possible omar/kassim and now it’s all i can ever think about, which is a PROBLEM, and yes i am WRITING THE FIC, although mostly as a conduit for all my frustrations about the writing (THE GUARDS!!!!!!!! WHERE IS THE CONSISTENCY AROUND THE GUARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ROYAL CHOREOGRAPHER IS NOT A REAL JOB AND IT’S UNBELIEVABLY TELLING THAT THEY COULDN’T THINK OF A VIABLE OPTION FOR OMAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), but also. god, those boys.
this is getting really rambly, but anyway, point is, i can perfectly understand why there are so few fanworks out there for the show, and for theatre productions generally, since the vast majority of people only see them once or twice ever, but unfortunately i’m seeing it multiple times a week for. many many months. there is no escape. i need to cope somehow.
