That Time Forgot: Honda HSC
A supposed successor to the original NSX, perhaps? Probably so, but it didn’t make the cut. Let’s travel back in time and talk about this car, in today’s installment of That Time Forgot.
Unveiled at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show, the HSC was a futuristic and sleek sports car concept for its time. The car also received a feature at the Geneva Motor Show and was also branded as an Acura for the 2004 North American International Auto Show. The name stood for “Honda Sports Concept” or “High-performance Sports Car” depending on who you asked.
Powered by an i-VTEC 3.5L naturally-aspirated V6 producing over 300 horsepower, the HSC was made of carbon fiber placed on an aluminum frame. A 6-speed paddle-shift gearbox was standard. The exhaust pipes were made of aluminum and the car had swan doors.
Immediately after it was released, speculations arose saying that the car was meant to be a successor to the NSX, but Honda never confirmed this. After its tour of the auto show circuit, development on the HSC went silent; it was only in 2005 when the HSC was confirmed to be purely a concept car, with no plans for production. It was subsequently followed by the Acura Advanced Sports Car Concept (or ASCC, shown below), which was in turn followed up by the Acura NSX concept which eventually came the next-generation Honda (or Acura, depending on where you live) NSX.
Okay, now that we’ve gotten all that history out of the way, let’s talk about the reason why you’re here: the history of its Hot Wheels counterpart.
Designed by Mark Jones, the Honda HSC (Hot Wheels calls it the Acura HSC Concept) was introduced in 2005 as a First Edition. It was first released in the above silver color scheme, replicating that of the real HSC. A notable feature of the HSC is the plastic insert headlamps, something that not a lot of castings have; the headlamps are part of the window piece.
There was a version of the HSC featured with Faster Than Ever wheels, with nickel plated axles for less friction. Faster Than Ever HSCs are apparently very, very fast even though the casting is notably very light.
This casting features a plastic base with the distinctive cut-out Hot Wheels logo which graced cars from 2005 to 2006; this logo was designed and patented by ex-Hot Wheels designer Nathan Proch. Due to cost cutting, this logo has since been removed. The base is made of plastic; the silver Hot Wheels logo is part of the interior piece.
This casting received a total of nine releases and was last seen in 2014 as a Mystery Model in the above colorscheme.
Now I’d want this casting to return to the lineup, although I have other castings I want to return more than this. Despite this, I hope you now know a little bit more about Honda’s high-performance sports concept car, and as usual, I’d do it again any day.

In the News: Teasers from Honda and Acura plus 10 years with Hankook sponsorship
By Michael Hozjan
2022 Honda Civic Prototype
Honda isn’t letting the moss grow under its feet despite selling Canada’s most popular ride for the past 22 years. What you see here, in Solar Flare Pearl is the prototype of the 2022 Civic scheduled to debut in late spring of 2021.
Honda tells us the 11th generation Civic will be riding on an all-new chassis with its first digital dash and promises to have a slew of technological advances, and safety systems.
The meaner looking front end compliments the sophisticated side profile nicely which means that in true Honda fashion the Civic should once again appeal to all age groups.
My first Civic, a ’78 had a minimalist dash with a large windshield that offered a clear view ahead, two of the features that undoubtedly solidified the car with potential buyers in the mid and late seventies. Honda is hinting at an instrument panel that is once again free of clutter in the upcoming model. Can’t wait.
2022 Acura MDX Prototype
Long time Honda designer Catalin Matei, who penned the original 2001 MDX as well as the MD-X Concept a year earlier has sharpened his pencil for the latest rendition of Acura’s flagship 7-passenger SUV. Studying the images of the two, side buy side we can see just how far Acura has progressed over the last two decades. Has it already been 19 years since we were first treated to the MDX?
Matei is no stranger to Honda/Acura. His designs for Honda R&D Americas (HRA) in Torrance California include the ’93 Civic Coupe, the 2006 Honda Pilot, 2007 Element SC and the 2011 and 2018 Odyssey.
It’ll be interesting to see how many of the design elements of the prototype make it to fourth generation MDX slated for the 2022 model year production. My guess is it’ll be pretty close.
Hankook Tires and the DTM Series Celebrate
Ten years is a long time to celebrate a business partnership much less a racing series sponsorship. Yet that’s exactly what Hankook Tires and DTM – the international touring car series did a few days ago.
The Ventus Race tire has proven itself time and time again over the last ten years and 150 races, including completing 40 races without a puncture.
"I was astonished by how unbelievably consistent the Hankook race tire was in all conditions," said former Formula 1 driver and 2019 DTM Series guest starter Alessandro Zanardi. "The Hankook engineers have done a great job."
"The new, more powerful turbo engines were a challenge for everyone, but Hankook did a good job, as always, and there were no issues with the tires." commented BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt, after the 2019 finale in Hockenheim.
In addition to sponsoring the series, Hankook also awards the team that has made the quickest tire changes over the course of the season. They are; Audi Sport Team Phoenix (2011, 2017 – 2019), BMW Team MTEK (2016), Audi Sport Team Abt (2012, 2015), Mercedes-AMG Team HWA (2014) and BMW Team Schnitzer (2013).

Led by “Break the Silence”, a 60-second short film cinematic-style television spot, Acura is building on its Less Talk. More Drive brand creative for the television debut of the 2021 TLX – the first Acura sedan fully designed around the brand’s Precision Crafted Performance DNA.
The all-new TLX is the quickest, best-handling and most well-appointed sedan in Acura’s 35-year history, and goes on sale at dealerships across the US this Monday, 28 September.
In “Break the Silence,” the 2021 Acura TLX stars in a 1920s-style silent film concept set to a soundtrack by legendary comedic actress and singer Betty Hutton’s “It’s Oh So Quiet.” The campaign’s storytelling method showcases the new TLX and its advanced features, capturing the attention of viewers with innovative visual and sound techniques.
The fast-paced action sequences set against the spot’s untraditional silent film backdrop highlight TLX performance, with the black and white film style meant to draw full attention to the Apex Blue Pearl Acura TLX Type S, expressing the true capabilities of this performance variant.
The campaign highlights key 2021 TLX technologies, including Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), the industry-leading torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive technology available on all 2021 TLX models.
The campaign also shows how Acura’s Integrated Dynamics System creates a personalised TLX driving experience through a new Individual Mode, enabling the driver to choose their preferred settings for each element of system control.

2021 BMW 4 Series revealed with mild-hybrid power and, uh, that face
Yes, that face. BMW From its turbocharged powertrains to its robust cabin tech to its advanced driver-assistance systems, there are a lot of reasons to like the 2021 4 Series, which BMW officially revealed Tuesday. But the one thing everyone's going to get hung up on is the styling -- specifically, that enormous grille.
Now playing: Watch this: 2021 BMW 4 Series: More than just a giant grille 2:59
Follow your nose
Yes, the 2021 BMW 4 Series has the enlarged kidneys first seen on the Concept 4 showcar from the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, as well as the all-electric i4. It's definitely... a look. And it's one we don't like, at least in photos. BMW says the grille "is framed by surfaces with a three-dimensional mesh structure," so there's at least some interesting detail, though it kind of loses any luster it might've had by bolting the European front plate in the middle. (It's going to look awful in US press fleet spec, with a bright yellow New Jersey plate smack dab in the middle.)The 2021 4 Series will be offered in 430i, 430i xDrive and M440i xDrive models, the latter of which gets darker exterior trim and larger side air intakes on the front fascia. LED headlights are standard across all models, and the shape just doesn't work with those giant buck teeth in the middle. Compared to an equivalent 3 Series sedan, the new 4 Series is 2.2 inches longer, 1 inch wider and 2.2 inches lower. But it rides on the same 112.2-inch wheelbase. See how it stacks up to its rivals in our spec comparison.Luckily, the rest of the 4 Series looks pretty darn good, with a tapering roofline similar to that of the larger 8 Series coupe. All 4 Series coupes come standard with 18-inch wheels, though a variety of 19-inch options are available, as are M Sport brakes with either blue or red calipers, an aero kit and a rear lip spoiler. The LED taillights have an interesting light signature not unlike that of the recently revealed 2021 Acura TLX, and honestly, we think the new 4 Series looks best from the rear three-quarter view.
2020 BMW 430i vs. 2021 BMW 430i
2020 BMW 430i 2021 BMW 430i Engine 2.0-liter turbo I4 2.0-liter turbo I4 Power 248 hp 255 hp Torque 258 lb-ft 294 lb-ft Transmission 8-speed auto 8-speed auto 0-60 mph 5.5 sec 5.5 sec Top speed 155 mph 155 mph Wheelbase 110.6 in 112.2 in Length 182.7 in 187.9 in Width 79.4 in 81.9 in Height 54.2 in 54.6 in Weight 3,574 lbs 3,578 lbs Cargo capacity 15.7 cu-ft 12.0 cu-ft
Tons of tech
Step inside, and the 4 Series' design is far less polarizing. The cabin is largely the same as what you'll find in the 3 Series sedan -- the 4 Series' four-door sibling -- with leather surfaces available in a range of colors, flush-mounted controls on the center console and several different wood and metal inlay options. Being a two-door coupe, the rear seats aren't super spacious, but they can at least be folded flat to accommodate longer items from the 12-cubic-foot trunk. The 4 Series comes standard with analog gauges and a 5.1-inch color display in the instrument cluster, as well as an 8.8-inch center touchscreen for the iDrive 7 infotainment suite. Opt for the Live Cockpit Professional package and you upgrade to a 12.3-inch fully digital gauge display, like the one offered in BMW's other models, as well as a 10.2-inch central multimedia screen. Regardless of models, navigation comes standard, with real-time traffic data from BMW Maps. And hey, both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard -- finally! -- and wirelessly, no less.As with the 3 Series, the 4 Series gets BMW's Intelligent Personal Assistant artificial intelligence tech, activated by saying, "Hey, BMW" -- kind of like the "Hey, Mercedes" function found in Benz's MBUX. Unlike MBUX, though, BMW's system is really just for controlling vehicle functions and working with the online navigation data. It's still useful, just not as robust. In other words, no, your BMW can't tell you a joke.Like the 3 Series sedan, the 4 Series can be had with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 10.2-inch infotainment screen. BMW Elsewhere on the tech front, the 4 Series gets the same driver-assistance systems as the new 3 Series. Standard equipment includes lane-departure warning, frontal collision warning, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high-beam headlights and speed limit information. You can add the company's Driving Assistance Professional Package, which gets you full-speed adaptive cruise control as well as Extended Traffic Jam Assist, a Level 2 driver-assistance feature that adds lane-keeping assistance to make highway commutes easier.A particularly cool tech upgrade is the optional Parking Assistance Package, which not only includes a 3D surround camera, but has a back-up assistant that actually memorizes the last 150 feet of your journey at speeds below 20 mph, and can automatically trace the same path in reverse. For the 4 Series, this package adds BMW's new drive recorder, which can automatically capture 20 seconds of video around the moment of an impact and save it to the car's hard drive. Your insurance claims adjuster will love it.
2020 BMW 440i vs. 2021 BMW M440i
2020 BMW 440i xDrive 2021 BMW M440i xDrive Engine 3.0-liter turbo I6 3.0-liter turbo I6 Power 320 hp 382 hp Torque 330 lb-ft 364 lb-ft Transmission 8-speed auto 8-speed auto 0-60 mph 4.6 sec 4.3 sec Top speed 149 mph 155 mph Wheelbase 110.6 in 112.2 in Length 182.7 in 188.0 in Width 79.4 in 81.9 in Height 54.8 in 54.8 in Weight 3,827 lbs 3,977 lbs Cargo capacity 15.7 cu-ft 12.0 cu-ft The roofline is very similar to that of the 8 Series. BMW
Turbo power with mild-hybrid assist
The 430i comes with BMW's 2.0-liter turbo I4 engine, delivering 255 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard but, as its name suggests, the 430i xDrive comes with all-wheel drive. These models accelerate to 60 mph in 5.5 and 5.3 seconds, respectively. Regardless of driveline, the 2.0-liter turbo engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The M440i xDrive, meanwhile, uses a 3.0-liter turbo I6 engine, which now has a 48-volt mild-hybrid battery, which delivers supplemental electric boost during acceleration and smooths out the action of the stop-start system. (The engine can now shut off below 9 mph rather than waiting until the car comes to a complete stop.) All told, the 3.0-liter I6 produces 382 hp and 369 lb-ft. Its standard all-wheel drive and M Sport rear differential allow the M440i to accelerate to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. Once again, an eight-speed automatic is the only transmission available. All 4 Series models get the same hydraulic-lift shock absorbers as the new 3 Series, which we love. This hardware smooths out road vibrations and reduces body movement, but doesn't give up any overall feedback or handling prowess. Compared to the 3 Series, the 4 Series has increased damping forces, firmer springs and larger anti-roll bars, and the coupe sits 0.4 inches lower to the ground. The M440i comes standard with an M Sport suspension, with an even stiffer tune. Finally, the Adaptive M chassis option allows for automatic adjustment of the adaptive dampers, though if our experience with the 3 Series is anything to go on, we think most buyers will prefer the standard and M Sport suspension setups just fine. Speed-sensitive power steering is standard on the 4 Series, while M Sport and M440i models get variable-ratio steering.Yes, a proper M4 is coming, too, but we won't see that version until after the four-door M3 debuts, likely sometime in 2021.The rear three-quarter is definitely this car's best angle. BMW
Arriving in October
The 2021 4 Series will go on sale globally in October, and it'll be priced from $46,595 in the US, including $995 for destination. The 430i xDrive will come in at $48,595 and the M440i xDrive will cost $59,495. This represents a $650 increase over the 2020 430i and 430i xDrive coupes, while the 2021 M440i is a full $5,150 more expensive than the 2020 440i. BMW's two-door 4 Series will continue to fight its long-time rivals, the Audi A5 and S5, and the Mercedes-Benz C300 and AMG C43. The 4 Series convertible will surely follow in due course, as will the four-door 4 Series Gran Coupe. Rest assured, they'll pack all the same performance and tech. And they'll definitely have that huge grille, too. Read More Read the full article

2018 Acura ILX
2018 Acura TLX is a luxury center for midsure dedicated to trim level: TLX 2.4L, TLX 2.4L with Technology, TLX 3.5L and Technology, TLX 3.5L Specs and TLX 3.5L & Advance. 2018 TLX is designed for integration of drilling experience, smart technology technology among prices and favorites. From the position of the TL and the TSX on the lineup, the TLX has become a sedan for sale. Although there are many offers, Acura TLX 2018 does not have a charming fancy. Style is not just an invisible road, but no specific operating model. With the 2018 guide, Acura solved this problem by giving TLX a beautiful face, better driving attitude, and re-use room re-optimization.
Contrary to the general view that relaxation does not cover all changes, the new 2018 Acura TLX is a major update, including the addition of the new model. TLX A-Spec is a new 2018 decision, and it provides more than just a stereotype. While we prefer A-Spec style codes, even more important to select A-Spec or TLX V6-power makes a difference when driving.
2018 Acura ILX Interior
Although there is no high level of luxury feeling like other competitions, the 2018 Acura TLX interior is well organized from the top of the material. Infotainment controls are not as effective or as complicated as competitors, but they provide similar functions. All rows and buttons feel high quality.
Visibility and space are the main key of the Actu TLX 2018. There is a big leg of the leg and the front room. The space on the back seat is also impressive, although it may be a problem for passengers up to six feet [6 m] high. Generally, the 2018 Actu TLX will be very easy for four adults in standard size.
Like most Acura products, storage space for small items is very open. There are many beaches of different types in packages of doors, dashboards or comforts. Cargo spaces exceed the number of competitors, than 14.3 feet feet. The backs have a back of 60/40-segmented almost flat.
2018 Acura ILX Features
Standard Features of 2018 Acura TLX 2.4L include 17-inch wheels, LED lights, unlimited heat extinguishers, automatic weather control, pre-prepared seats, suspended skin repairs, AcuraWatch pilot support which includes cruising cruise control , automatic high-beam control, minimizing traffic, predicting collisions and reducing automatic explosion, warning movement and interference.

When moviegoers first saw King T'Challa in action as Black Panther it was a real showstopper: The Marvel comic book character clings to the top of a sleek new Lexus LC sports coupe as he surfs through the busy streets of Busan, South Korea, in a high-speed chase that ultimately destroys his remote-controlled ride.
The scene’s a crowdpleaser, to be sure--and it successfully sells Lexus' image as a maker of high-performance luxury sports cars to a younger audience. Starting this weekend, with a prominent role in Sony's sci-fi franchise Men in Black: International, the Japanese automotive company hopes to add another hit to its credits, giving it supporting roles in summer blockbusters for two years running.
But betting on a movie's success is a game that most veteran studio executives have a hard time playing, let alone luxury automotive brands. And no matter how much money is sunk into a project, there are no guarantees at the box office.
For instance, Black Panther could have been a big miss for the Japanese luxury automaker. The titular main character, who rules a fictional technologically advanced African nation, was relatively unknown to most audiences prior to the movie’s release. Lexus executives weren’t allowed to read the script before signing on to support the film, giving the company no guarantee of how its brand would appear on screen. The production also wanted six coupes to use for filming, which forced Lexus to provide custom-built prototypes that can cost upwards of $1 million each, since the actual car was not being produced.
For Lexus, whose corporate parent Toyota isn't known for risk taking, the gamble paid off. Black Panther blew away expectations to become 2018’s highest-grossing movie in the U.S., earning more than $700 million domestically, and nearly $1.4 billion worldwide. And the film didn't just appeal to comic book fans, it also over-indexed with African-Americans, given that Black Panther was the first big-budget Marvel Studio’s movie to feature a black actor as the lead.
"Lexus has always been committed to celebrating the rich diversity of our customers, but Black Panther catapulted it to a new level," says Lisa Materazzo, Lexus’ vice president of marketing.
Betting on blockbusters
With Men in Black: International, Lexus is taking less of a risk. Sony has put considerable resources into breathing new life into its $2 billion franchise, which now stars Chris Hemsworth (Marvel's hammer-wielding Thor) and Tessa Thompson, who proved a winning duo together in Thor: Ragnarok.
In the new MIB film, Lexus' aggressive RC F sports coupe races through London, helping agents escape threatening aliens, before transforming into a jet. Lexus' RX Hybrid and LX SUVs are also featured in scenes with alien encounters.
In both MIB and Panther, Lexus is portrayed as a future-forward designer of high-tech vehicles, a positioning that promotes the company's newest slogan "Experience Amazing." "The beauty of film integrations is that none of the traditional rules apply," Materazzo says. "It's an opportunity to partner with filmmakers to imagine all of the possibilities."
This isn't necessarily new ground for Lexus, which has introduced other high-tech products like a hoverboard and sports yacht concept over the past several years to expand the brand's appeal to affluent buyers in the sought-after 45- to 55-year-old market.
Lexus is looking to use films as a way to launch new emotionally engaging campaigns around the release of its new sports cars and luxury sedans and SUVs. It especially sees movies as a way to tap into conversations around cultural events.
But forcing your brand into the story doesn’t come cheap. In addition to providing expensive prototypes to filmmakers for Panther, Lexus produced a comic book and custom videos, as well as bought a 30-second Super Bowl spot for the tie-in and LC 500 launch that cost the company more than $5 million.
But when Marvel's movies have made a combined $21 billion worldwide to date (including the most recent "Avengers"), you take the risk.
A strategy as old as Bond, James Bond
If Lexus seems like it's siding up to well-dressed secret agents, there's a reason: The brand is focused on pushing the performance of its cars, technological innovation and style--while having some fun. That kind of limits just who gets to drive its hero cars.
"We consider how our product aligns with the character who drives it," Materazzo says, and "how the integration might enable us to illuminate a core brand truth within the story.”
But the automaker wasn't specifically looking to get into the superhero business, though Black Panther was expected to be groundbreaking in bringing the character to the big screen, given that star Chadwick Boseman is the first black actor to headline a big-budget superhero film which features a largely African-American cast.
So putting Black Panther in a LS 500 sedan and LC 500 coupe in the film and marketing materials was akin to pairing James Bond with Aston Martin.
But moviegoers haven't always embraced the films Lexus has supported with product placement. In 2017, the same year "Experience Amazing" launched, Lexus developed the designs for a futuristic jet for Luc Besson's pricey sci-fi fantasy Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which didn't take off, earning just $226 million worldwide.
On the other hand, when the films work, they clearly help improve Lexus' brand image, and boost sales. It’s "Long Live the King" Super Bowl spot helped boost searches for Lexus' LS sedan by 2,500%, according to auto site Kelley Blue Book shortly after the ad launched. And online searches for Lexus rose 15% the week after Panther's debut, while the LC 500 was up 10% on its own, according to Autotrader.
Lexus recorded its best global sales year in 2018, moving 698,330 vehicles off dealership lots, an increase of 4.5%--a tough figure for anyone to reach, in what's becoming a crowded luxury auto market.
"Auto companies partnering on movies is more about exposure than sales," says Michelle Krebs, executive analyst at Autotrader. This is true especially summer blockbusters that attract millions of moviegoers, she adds, noting that Nissan's affiliation with the Star Wars films enabled it to have a themed auto show exhibit, "which surely drew lots of kids with their parents in tow to an exhibit they might otherwise have skipped."
In addition to the Black Panther franchise--which Lexus isn't expected to give up though a sequel isn't expected until 2021--the automaker will likely appear in future Marvel movies. Marvel Studios' marketing mavens prefer long-term relationships with brands. For instance, Audi has been the vehicle of choice for Iron Man since 2008. Other Avengers films also featured Acura.
But it also has eyes on other franchises, as evidenced by its high-visibility role in MIB. Lexus says doesn't have a "strict rule" for how many films it wants to rally around per year, "one high profile partnership per year (feels) about right," Materazzo says. "We are actively considering several possibilities."
Whether MIB tanks or soars, Lexus’ diversification is a smart strategy for Hollywood tentpole brand integrations. Because even with all of Black Panther‘s success, if the movie proved one thing it’s that you can’t stay in Wakanda forever.

Peugeot Is Coming Back, But What Will Its Lineup Look Like?
So, Peugeot is coming back to America. Which cars and SUVs will it bring? It’s an interesting question made even more so by the fact that by 2016, when CEO Carlos Tavares first announced PSA Peugeot Citroën’s intention to return to the United States and Canada, the company was starting to engineer its latest models so as to avoid any major tear-up to adapt them to U.S. safety and emissions regulations.
Peugeot has redesigned most of its lineup since then, and the parent company already has begun certifying models for sale here, which is a long, tedious, and costly process. The automaker’s first product is already in America in the form of its car-sharing program called Free2Move, which has already launched in Washington, D.C. without any of PSA’s own models.
Next up, expect Tavares and North American PSA president Larry Dominique to announce timing of the return here, which is promised before 2026. If the reintroduction of Peugeot—it last sold cars in the U.S. in 1991—is at the latter end of its stated 10-year timeframe (the clock started ticking in 2016), most current Peugeot car and crossover SUV models probably will have been replaced with all-new versions. If the return is early in the ’20s, most existing models would only need mid-cycle refreshes.
Which Peugeots are likely to come to U.S. and Canadian dealerships? Here are my best guesses, beginning with the most-likely models:
E-Legend
This retro design EV concept premiered at the 2018 Paris show, with styling based on the lovely Pininfarina-designed 504 coupe that made its debut at the 1969 Geneva Motor Show. The Paris car is powered by two electric motors producing 456 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Peugeot claims a sub-four-second zero-to-62-mph time and a range of 370 miles for this Tesla fighter. If it reaches production, it’s a no-brainer for U.S. import and would serve as Peugeot’s performance and style icon, while also helping fulfill California’s zero-emissions mandate.
3008
At 175.1 inches long, on a 105.3-inch wheelbase, the Peugeot 3008 is on the small side within the booming compact SUV segment. The also smallish Hyundai Tucson is 1.3 inches longer than the Pug, and its wheelbase is 0.2 inch shorter, for comparison. The problem with this SUV and most compact and smaller Peugeot models is that they’re powered by engines inappropriate for the U.S. market. In the U.K., it comes with either a 1.2-liter gasoline three-cylinder, or a 1.5-liter diesel four. Considering the ongoing diesel issues in the States, expect the French automaker to send us either gasoline four-cylinder engines, pure electrics like the E-Legend, and perhaps hybrid or plug-in-hybrid powertrains in the works using the 1.2-liter engine. Midsize Peugeots come with a 1.6-liter gasoline four, and I expect it to be the base engine for compact models coming to the U.S. The 3008, which is in the middle of Peugeot’s SUV range, is its most technologically advanced crossover, with 3D navigation, Apple CarPlay, a 180-degree backup camera, enhanced parking assist, a smart electronic tailgate, and a panoramic sunroof.
508 Fastback
An all-new midsize flagship sedan launched in Europe last year, the 508 is 187.0-inches long, on a 110.0-inch wheelbase, featuring handsome fastback styling that’s not to be confused with Mercedes-Benz CLS-class-like “four-door coupes.” Its gasoline engine options include a 1.6-liter four-cylinder rated 181 for horsepower and 184 lb-ft, although the 308 GTi Sport’s 205-hp version of the engine (see below) is more likely. Peugeot may be working on a higher-displacement version of this gas four, or a turbocharged version for our market. Like most other Peugeot models, the 508 is sold in the U.K. in trim levels starting with Active, and matriculating north through Allure, GT Line, and GT, and I’d expect the two top trim levels for the U.S., three at most. There’s also an all-new 508 wagon, although this body style has very limited appeal in the U.S., even when raised slightly and outfitted with cladding and all-wheel drive.
5008
Peugeot’s three-row SUV is barely midsize at 182.7 inches long, and the French automaker may choose to sell it here with only two rows to compete with such models as the Chevrolet Blazer and the Ford Edge. Overall height without the roof rack is 64.6 inches. The 181-hp 1.6-liter four is available here, and it’s equipped with current driver-assist systems, including blind-spot information, active lane-keep assist, advanced driver-attention assist, and automatic high beams.
2008
You’ve noticed by now that Peugeot’s cars are named with a three-digit number with “0” in the middle (a trademark forced Porsche to rename its “901” the “911” in 1964), while the SUVs get four digits with two zeros in the middle. The Peugeot 2008 is a B-segment crossover, that’s roughly five inches shorter in length and four inches shorter in height than the Buick Encore. The prospects for bringing the 2008 to North America may hinge on whether Peugeot can make the 1.6-liter PureTech (the marque’s name for its gas engines) four-cylinder fit.
308/308 GTi Sport by Peugeot Sport
If Peugeot chooses to import this compact hatchback (there’s also a station wagon version, as shown above, but forget it) that will only happen with the advent of an all-new model before the marque’s return here. For an idea of what to expect, look at the styling of the all-new Peugeot 208 subcompact (shown below). Upsize that styling to VW Golf territory and you have the next 308. It’s is sold in the U.K. with the 1.2-liter PureTech three or the 1.5 diesel, while the 208, which is on Peugeot’s latest platform, includes those engines, plus an EV model with a claimed 211-mile range. The Peugeot GTi Sport comes with a 205-hp, 244-lb-ft version of the 1.6. The GTi also comes with a Torsen limited-slip differential, 19-inch wheels, and an EAT8 automatic developed with Aisin. There’s a conventional six-speed manual available on this car, but you can almost certainly forget that, too—the additional cost of emissions certification, somewhere in the $1 to $2 million range, would not be worth it for sales in the thousands, if that many.
Market Position
Peugeot’s bigger cars, executive sedans like the C-/D-segment 508, have long been positioned in France and Western Europe as semi-premium models. When Peugeot returns, it will come here in relatively low volumes and nibble at such marques as Volkswagen, Mazda, and perhaps Subaru, and we’ll only get the higher trim levels with their more profitable margins. I think Peugeot’s cars will be positioned to strike at the upper ends of those rival brands and could perhaps even take on entry-level Volvos, Audis, and Acuras. The Peugeot 308 and 308 GTi would take on VW’s Golf and GTI and the Mazda 3; the 508 would target the VW Passat and Arteon, and perhaps upper-trim Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys; and the 3008 might aim at the Mazda CX-5 and perhaps even the Volvo XC40.
Not Likely for the U.S.
The 108 two-door, an A-class-size hatchback; the iON, a rebadged Mitsubishi i-MiEV; the Rifter small multipurpose van; the Partner commercial van; the Traveller minivan.

2020 Cadillac XT6: For When the Escalade Is Too Baller
After two decades dominating the big truck-based luxury SUV segment with its de facto flagship, the Escalade, Cadillac has unveiled the XT6, its first serious competitor in the three-row luxury crossover class dominated by such models as the Volvo XC90, Audi Q7, and Acura MDX. The 2020 Cadillac XT6 goes on sale this summer in both Premium Luxury and Sport guise and will court buyers for whom the XT5 is too small and the brash Escalade is, well, too much of an Escalade.
The new XT6 is not, strictly speaking, the luxury division’s first three-row unibody SUV. That would be the 2004–09 Cadillac SRX, a tall STS station wagon with all-wheel drive. While Cadillac has been returned most of its passenger cars to rear-drive over the past 15 years or so, the XT6 rides on the transverse-engine, front-drive-based C1 family platform also used to underpin the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave. It will be assembled at General Motors’ Spring Hill, Tennessee, plant.
The new Cadillac also will compete with the upcoming 2020 Lincoln Aviator, which goes on sale later this year riding on a new rear-wheel-drive platform to be shared with the 2020 Ford Explorer—as well as the next Mustang. Cadillac figures luxury shoppers looking for a three-row SUV, especially with the AWD option, aren’t concerned about FWD versus RWD. We’ll have to see both the Aviator and XT6 next to each other, but at first glance the Lincoln seems to be possessed of more elegant proportions than the Cadillac. (It also has a way cooler name.)
One engine is on the specifications sheet, GM’s naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V-6 making an estimated 310 horsepower and 271 lb-ft—numbers that will be nailed down closer to the SUV’s launch—and coupled to a nine-speed automatic transmission.
The Sport model comes standard with all-wheel drive, a twin-clutch electrically controlled rear differential that can be disconnected or apply torque to the individual rear wheels to enhance cornering, and continuously adaptive dampers. All-wheel drive is optional on the XT6 Premium Luxury, and this setup has a single-clutch rear differential that can also disconnect to boost efficiency. Both AWD systems come with driver-select Touring (FWD only), Sport (part-time AWD), AWD, and Snow/Ice modes. The Sport mode switches to more aggressive throttle and transmission shift points, and on the XT6 Sport with its CDC dampers, it also tightens up the suspension. Steering ratio is 16:1 for the Cadillac XT6 Premium Luxury, and 15:1 for the Sport.
Dimensionally, the XT6 is 198.8 inches long, rides on a 112.7-inch wheelbase, is 77.3-inches wide, and stands 70.2 inches tall including the luggage rack. For reference, the Enclave is 5.5 inches longer, 1.5 inches wider, and 0.3 inch lower, and has a 6.2-inch longer wheelbase. The XT6 sits sort of between the Buick and the Acadia, as the GMC is 193.6 inches long, 75.4 inches wide, 66.0 inches tall, and has a 0.2-inch shorter wheelbase than the Cadillac.
Cadillac global design chief Andrew Smith says his staff were tasked with styling a “right-size three-row, where every seat is the right seat.” In other words, the first, second, and third rows all have good outward visibility, and the back row doesn’t feel too separated from other passengers. His staff concentrated on the XT6’s stance and a wide track, as well as making it taller, not lower, and fitting in nicely between XT5 and Escalade.
Cadillac designers gave the XT6 the grille and vertical lamps, which double as daytime running lamps and turn signals, of the Escala concept. Above those lamps are thin horizontal headlamps with three-level LEDs, and cornering lamps will be standard. The taillamps are modeled after the ones on the recently facelifted (and soon to be discontinued) Cadillac CT6 so as to be distinct from the XT4 and XT5, though it’s still instantly recognizable as a modern Cadillac. The XT6 Sport’s grille is an evolution of the XT4 Sport’s, with blacked-out mesh, and that version also will come with black accents on the window and taillamp surrounds and its own unique lower rear fascia.
Premium Luxury models will ride on 20-inch wheels, while the Sport can be upgraded to 21s. In addition, its 20-inch wheels are of a different design. Both will be available with six seats and second-row captain’s chairs, or seven seats and a second-row bench. A manual one-button control folds the second row forward for entry to the fairly capacious third row. The two rearmost rows fold flat, and there’s a handy deep compartment hidden under the floor behind the third row, with a full-size spare located under that. Each row has two USB ports, and Wi-Fi connectivity is standard.
A two-panel sunroof is standard across the board. Cadillac’s latest CUE infotainment system updates on the XT4’s with a rotary control that has a “jog” function to allow control without having touch the 8.0-inch screen. Noise cancellation is built into the standard eight-speaker Bose audio, while a 14-speaker Bose Performance Series system is an available upgrade.
Both the 2020 Cadillac XT6 Premium Luxury and Sport can be outfitted in Platinum trim. The Premium Luxury Platinum offers a choice of “four species of exotic woods,” while Sport Platinum offers two different carbon-fiber trims. The Premium Luxury Platinum example we saw at a preview event had a jet-black interior and “maple sugar” wood trim, while the Sport one had copper-color thread woven throughout its carbon trim. Both looked elegant slathered with semi-aniline premium leather, though too much of the familiar GM plastic trim and shared control buttons remain. On first impression, the XT6’s interior doesn’t quite pop like the Aviator’s.
Of course, the new XT6 will come with the now-typical long list of safety features, including a standard high-definition rear camera with washer, forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, lane-change alert with side blind-zone alert, and rear cross-traffic alert. Among the optional stuff on this front are advanced adaptive cruise control, automatic parking assist with braking, rear pedestrian alert, high-definition 360-degree camera and recorder, a head-up display, reverse automatic braking, and night vision.
Cadillac promises a “surprise” in addition to the new XT6 at its official coming-out party ahead of the 2019 Detroit auto show’s first press day. Smart money bets it will be a rendering or concept version of the Cadillac crossover EV that GM CEO Mary Barra says will lead the automaker’s electric-vehicle product onslaught early in the next decade. Meanwhile, the 2020 Cadillac XT6 Premium Luxury and Sport will be available for order this spring, ahead of summer deliveries.
