I first began my career in the holistic health field over 20 years ago as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. As a counselor, I always incorporated a holistic model into treating people so that they could get to the root issues and find ways to create change in their life.

Early on in my career, I had an opportunity to be trained to use auricular acupuncture to help patients detox from drugs and alcohol. After seeing the powerful impact of the Acu-detox protocol, I started working collaboratively with acupuncturists to help my patients address many other symptoms and health conditions.

Eventually, I felt the frustration of being limited to traditional talk therapy. This passion for treating the whole person and being able to address the mind, heart, AND body, is what led me to pursue my degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine. I found that I felt too limited just treating one part — I wanted to treat the whole person.

While I continue to find a deeper form of healing in eastern medicine, I also value western medicine and take an integrative approach to health and healing. I strongly believe that all practitioners treating a patient can collaborate so that each patient feels that they are being treated as a whole person. I find that we each add value to health and healing and I love being a part of a patients team in pursuing health and wellness.

On A More Personal Note…

My path to becoming a healing practitioner began with my own personal journey in recovering from health issues that prevented me from living my best life both physically and emotionally. Although restoring my own health and wellbeing was not a simple straightforward process, it taught me a lot about the nature of healing. It also opened my heart to understanding what it is like to be a patient looking to get out of pain both physically and emotionally, and to feel better so that I could continue to pursue what I loved doing in life.

Generally speaking, I would say that I am a pretty healthy person yet my past reflects a hip and knee injury that easily caused chronic pain, migraines from an old injury to my neck, chronic digestive issues, anxiety, and insomnia. At the time, I was aware that these health concerns impacted my life but I really thought I just had to live with them.

On a physical level, I have always been into athletics and different outdoor activities – such as yoga, pilates, dance, mountain biking, rock climbing, hiking, soccer, and many other outdoor activities. While I would immerse myself into each of these sports, I found that these injuries often held me back from taking each of these activities to the next level. I would continue to do it and would find ways to work around these injuries the best I could but I was always trying to “manage the pain.” I found I had to be careful of how hard I could challenge myself as further injury had the potential of setting me back even further. After hitting a point of frustration of feeling limited, I pursued a variety of holistic modalities, including acupuncture, herbs, nutrition, chiropractic care, and focusing on forms of exercise that allowed me to build strength in a way that decreased pain. This approach worked in a way that addressed the root of my symptoms and the results were significant for me. This was further reinforced after dealing with a bout of chronic fatigue after getting mono (the Epstein Barre Virus) as an adult. Acupuncture and herbs helped me recover so that my energy was back up to what I was used to, allowing me to have the energy to get back to doing all of the things that I loved.

On a mental health level, I had a life long struggle with anxiety and insomnia which also impacted my quality of life in a number of ways. Again, I found that western medicine only offered solutions with medication that caused me to have a number of negative side effects that made me feel worse. Personally, I found healing when I sought counseling from a therapist that took a heart centered and holistic approach to healing while also combining this internal work with acupuncture, herbs, and other holistic approaches to healing.

I came to understand that Western medicine—while miraculous in its own right—had limits. I knew that complete healing would require more than just treating the symptoms. Being able to find treatment providers, that saw me as a WHOLE person and by addressing the root imbalances was a turning point on every level, setting me on a trajectory to find profound healing.

Now, I love to hold this space for my clients knowing that they don’t have to keep treating symptoms…they can have the solutions to get out of pain and get back to living their life.

Acupuncture Doctor Approved

The American College of Physicians formally recommends acupuncture for the treatment of back pain. Published in the prestigious Annals of Internal Medicine, clinical guidelines were developed by the American College of Physicians (ACP) to present recommendations based on evidence. Citing quality evidence in modern research, the ACP notes that nonpharmacologic treatment with acupuncture for the treatment of chronic low back pain is recommended. The official grade by the ACP is a “strong recommendation.” [1]

A major goal of the recommendation is for acupuncture and other nonpharmacological therapies to replace drug therapy as a primary source of pain relief. Treatment with opioids is only recommended, with an official “weak recommendation,” when other modalities do not provide adequate relief. A strong recommendation is also made by the American College of Physicians for the treatment of both acute and subacute lower back pain with heat, massage, acupuncture, and spinal manipulation. [2] The recommendations were approved by the ACP Board of Regents and involves evidence based recommendations from doctors at the Penn Health System (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center (Minnesota), and the Yale School of Medicine (New Haven, Connecticut). 

The American College of Physicians notes that approximately 25% of USA adults have had, at the very minimum, a one day lower back pain episode within the past three months. The socioeconomic impact of lower back pain in the USA was approximately $100 billion in the year 2006 . The costs include medical care and indirect costs due to lost wages and declines in productivity. [3] Recommendations for treatment options, including those for the use of acupuncture, include considerations of positive medical patient outcomes, the total number of back pain episodes, duration between episodes, alleviation of lower back pain, improvement in function of the back, and work disability reductions. Recommendations are for both radicular and nonradicular lower back pain.

The target audience for the American College of Physicians recommendations includes all doctors, other clinicians, and the adult population with lower back pain. The ACP notes, “Moderate-quality evidence showed that acupuncture was associated with moderately lower pain intensity and improved function compared with no acupuncture at the end of treatment .” [4] In agreement, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (National Institutes of Health) notes that acupuncture is an effective treatment modality for the relief of chronic lower back pain. [5]

These findings are consistent with those published in Mayo Clinic proceedings finding that acupuncture is effective for the treatment of lower back pain. The same Mayo Clinic report notes that acupuncture does not cause any significant adverse effects. [6] The Mayo Clinic findings apply to both nociceptive and non-nociceptive pain. Nociceptive back pain includes musculoskeletal inflammation and pain involving nerve cells wherein nociceptors are activated. Nociceptors are afferent neurons in the skin, muscles, joints, and other areas. For example, nerve impingement (often referred to as a “pinched nerve”) produces one type of nociceptive pain.

Non-nociceptive pain does not involve inflammation and is more relevant to pain processing in the central nervous system. One type of non-nociceptive pain condition is fibromyalgia and acupuncture has been confirmed as an effective treatment modality for this condition. The Mayo Clinic proceedings note, “Martin et al. found a significant improvement between electroacupuncture vs sham electroacupuncture. Differences were seen on the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) scores for fatigue and anxiety.” [7]

The Mayo Clinic and American College of Physicians findings are consistent with additional quality research. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York) and University of York (United Kingdom) researchers note “We have provided the most robust evidence from high-quality trials on acupuncture for chronic pain. The synthesis of high-quality IPD found that acupuncture was more effective than both usual care and sham acupuncture. Acupuncture is one of the more clinically effective physical therapies for osteoarthritis and is also cost-effective if only high-quality trials are analysed.” [8]

Doctors understand the true need for effective pain management. Nonpharmacological solutions are important for a variety of reasons including prevention of addiction, effective relief of pain, and prevention of adverse effects. This is often of heightened concern during pregnancy and for children. As a result, university hospitals integrate acupuncture into usual care settings to improve patient outcomes. For example, pediatric doctors at the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco provide acupuncture to children, including non-needle laser acupuncture. At the University of California hospital, acupuncture is made available for both inpatients and outpatients. Dr. Kim notes that acupuncture reduces nausea up to 70%. She adds that acupuncture is also effective for significant reductions in post-surgical pain and chronic headaches. [9]

Recently, researchers have discovered how acupuncture stops pain and provides other forms of relief for patients. Breakthrough research conducted by University of South Florida (Tampa) and Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Fuzhou) researchers documents how acupuncture stops pain. The researchers note, “acupuncture exerts a remarkable analgesic effect on SCI [spinal cord injury] by also inhibiting production of microglial cells through attenuation of p38MAPK and ERK activation.” [10]

Microglia are central nervous system immunity cells that secrete proinflammatory and neurotoxic mediators. Acupuncture reduces pain by attenuating this response. The researchers also document that acupuncture provides neuroprotection. The researchers note that acupuncture prevents brain damage in the hippocampus by “preventing microglial activation.” The University of South Florida members of the research team were from the Department of Neurosurgery and Brain Repair and the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Funding was provided by the United States Department of Defense, University of South Florida Neurosurgery and Brain Repair, and the James and Esther King Biomedical Research Foundation.

The aforementioned research reveals an important biochemical mechanism involved in acupuncture’s ability to alleviate pain and reduce harmful inflammation. University of California researchers have quantified acupuncture’s ability to control inflammation by regulating enkephalins. In addition, the NCCAOM (National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine) provides professional certification for acupuncturists, which ensures standards of excellence for licensed acupuncturists. Given the large body of supportive research and the administrative support for providing safe and effective acupuncture to the general public, expect to see greater implementation of acupuncture into usual care settings.

I first began my career in the holistic health field over 20 years ago as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. As a counselor, I always incorporated a holistic model into treating people so that they could get to the root issues and find ways to create change in their life.

Early on in my career, I had an opportunity to be trained to use auricular acupuncture to help patients detox from drugs and alcohol. After seeing the powerful impact of the Acu-detox protocol, I started working collaboratively with acupuncturists to help my patients address many other symptoms and health conditions.

Eventually, I felt the frustration of being limited to traditional talk therapy. This passion for treating the whole person and being able to address the mind, heart, AND body, is what led me to pursue my degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine. I found that I felt too limited just treating one part — I wanted to treat the whole person.

While I continue to find a deeper form of healing in eastern medicine, I also value western medicine and take an integrative approach to health and healing. I strongly believe that all practitioners treating a patient can collaborate so that each patient feels that they are being treated as a whole person. I find that we each add value to health and healing and I love being a part of a patients team in pursuing health and wellness.

On A More Personal Note…

My path to becoming a healing practitioner began with my own personal journey in recovering from health issues that prevented me from living my best life both physically and emotionally. Although restoring my own health and wellbeing was not a simple straightforward process, it taught me a lot about the nature of healing. It also opened my heart to understanding what it is like to be a patient looking to get out of pain both physically and emotionally, and to feel better so that I could continue to pursue what I loved doing in life.

Generally speaking, I would say that I am a pretty healthy person yet my past reflects a hip and knee injury that easily caused chronic pain, migraines from an old injury to my neck, chronic digestive issues, anxiety, and insomnia. At the time, I was aware that these health concerns impacted my life but I really thought I just had to live with them.

On a physical level, I have always been into athletics and different outdoor activities – such as yoga, pilates, dance, mountain biking, rock climbing, hiking, soccer, and many other outdoor activities. While I would immerse myself into each of these sports, I found that these injuries often held me back from taking each of these activities to the next level. I would continue to do it and would find ways to work around these injuries the best I could but I was always trying to “manage the pain.” I found I had to be careful of how hard I could challenge myself as further injury had the potential of setting me back even further. After hitting a point of frustration of feeling limited, I pursued a variety of holistic modalities, including acupuncture, herbs, nutrition, chiropractic care, and focusing on forms of exercise that allowed me to build strength in a way that decreased pain. This approach worked in a way that addressed the root of my symptoms and the results were significant for me. This was further reinforced after dealing with a bout of chronic fatigue after getting mono (the Epstein Barre Virus) as an adult. Acupuncture and herbs helped me recover so that my energy was back up to what I was used to, allowing me to have the energy to get back to doing all of the things that I loved.

On a mental health level, I had a life long struggle with anxiety and insomnia which also impacted my quality of life in a number of ways. Again, I found that western medicine only offered solutions with medication that caused me to have a number of negative side effects that made me feel worse. Personally, I found healing when I sought counseling from a therapist that took a heart centered and holistic approach to healing while also combining this internal work with acupuncture, herbs, and other holistic approaches to healing.

I came to understand that Western medicine—while miraculous in its own right—had limits. I knew that complete healing would require more than just treating the symptoms. Being able to find treatment providers, that saw me as a WHOLE person and by addressing the root imbalances was a turning point on every level, setting me on a trajectory to find profound healing.

Now, I love to hold this space for my clients knowing that they don’t have to keep treating symptoms…they can have the solutions to get out of pain and get back to living their life.

Joe Cole on following in the footsteps of Rodney Marsh in Florida: ‘I thought I was finished but I feel alive in Tampa’

There used to be a joke around Tampa Bay that St Petersburg was where old people went to die. ‘God’s waiting room,’ they called the city.

But for Joe Cole, now a football veteran, joining Tampa Bay Rowdies has given him his life — and playing career — back again.

In an interview at his plush apartment in downtown St Pete — as the locals call it — Cole reveals how he almost retired from playing in 2015 when his body failed him, explains why he has become Tampa Bay’s resident expert on Brexit and what former club Chelsea will miss most when his friend John Terry leaves in the summer.

Yet while he talks enthusiastically about the game, an aspect he most relishes about moving away from England is that he can walk down the street and not get asked about football.

Rowdies employees say the thing they like about Cole is that although he is a big star, he is known as ‘Joe who gets coffee every morning’, at the local coffee shop on 2nd Avenue, and ‘Joe who watches the game at the bar’ — favouring The Moon Under Water, a British pub beneath his apartment building.

It is here that he spends time watching more Premier League football than he ever did back in England, sitting under the Scotland and St George’s flags hanging from the ceiling and the Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool scarves around the bar, a small part of home, 4,500 miles away.

‘I’ll have more conversations with people because it’s not all about football,’ he says. ‘For some reason I’ve become the expert on Brexit for the whole of Beach Drive. They hear my accent and ask me what’s happening. I say, "It might affect coffee prices".’

Cole walks the half-mile from his apartment to training and home games at the Al Lang Stadium, where they play on a patchwork pitch, palm trees in one corner and yachts on view from another.

He cannot completely escape home. As we stroll to the recent home game against Charleston, two Americans call his name, shout ‘Irons’ and make West Ham’s trademark X with their forearms (which Cole returns), but largely he is left alone.

Cole admits he considered retirement at Aston Villa ‘because my body was letting me down’

‘I walk down the road every day, I’ll say "Hello" to the guys in the coffee shop. They’ll ask how we got on at the weekend — that’s it. Then it’ll be like, "Lovely day", or "What’s going on with Theresa May and the election?" — that’ll be the new one now.’

Cole, now 35, returned to England last Christmas and found the attention difficult. ‘It was really getting to me because I’d not had it for seven months. I realise the anonymity I get here is precious.’

Yet none of this would be an issue if Cole had retired at Aston Villa. ‘I was considering packing it in, because my body was letting me down,’ he admits.

‘At Villa a doctor said I needed surgery on my hip but I couldn’t afford the time. I was training on one leg for six months. I should’ve just got it sorted. It didn’t work and I was disenchanted.

‘I went all around the world looking for people: Belgium, Germany, America, all the best people and no one could sort me out. Ever since I did my knee at Chelsea (in 2009) it was an uphill struggle.

‘I tried all the weirdest, wackiest treatments: chiropractors, osteopaths, reflexologists, acupuncturists, physios, kinetic energy people, I’ve had nutters putting magnets on me. I stopped short of seeing a faith healer. I went to see a guy in London and it was last-chance saloon.’

Cole was taught to listen to his body and to stop putting pressure on it. He adds: ‘Then I moved to Coventry and played without injury and I got my love back for the game, then Tampa Bay came along. I’m just as proud of anything I achieve now as what I achieved in my prime. I wish I found this way (of managing my body) six years ago, just after I did my knee. I’m convinced I’d still be playing in the Premier League.’

Unlike Cole, his former England and Chelsea team-mate Terry largely avoided injury and only now, at 36, has he decided to leave Stamford Bridge. Cole used to go out drinking in Essex with Terry and Michael Carrick when they were younger players.

Cole was in the massage room at Chelsea’s training ground with Terry when the defender received the call from Steve McClaren in 2006 to say he was being made England captain.

‘When I signed for Chelsea, he was the first person to see me as I walked through the door,’ Cole says. ‘Although he’s only a few months older, he put his arm around me and it was like, "I’ll look after you" like the new kid at school, like an older brother.

‘Chelsea will miss that. They are a well-run club but forget everything he does on the pitch, it’s the unseen things as a captain. I remember I was having a bit of a rough time there. He recognised it and got one of the video analysts to make a compilation of all my best bits. It was a little touch but it really lifted me.

‘For him to even notice that… in football you’re so focused on yourself and your own game, to have an eye on everyone else in the club is remarkable. You can’t quantify that. He was a younger man then, as well, and to have that empathy — that’s one of a million things the club will miss.

Cole came through West Ham’s youth system before leaving the club for Chelsea in 2003

‘They’ll have to spend a lot of money to replace him. He’d love it out here. He’d be perfect for any club out here. Anyone would take him.’

The Florida way of life might be more relaxed for Cole but the sporting demands are still intense. When we meet for this interview, he has just been away for six days playing games in Louisville and Cincinnati.

His one-year-old son Max is already in bed, but Ruby, seven, and Harry, four, have waited up to see dad. As the discussion continues, they both climb on a knee and Ruby calls him the best daddy ever. ‘Why you being nice to me? You’re never nice to me!’ Cole jokes, and they dissolve into giggles.

Cole says his time as a Coventry player in League One ‘got his love back for the game’

‘It’s nice to be playing football and still wanted — that’s what I do it for,’ Cole says, the words muffled by his children’s cheeks squashing his face. ‘I’d love still to be playing in the Premier League but my body unfortunately slowed down a lot quicker than other people’s.

‘I started young, similar to Wayne Rooney, I blew out my knee at 28. I’d love still to be playing for England. I watched the Champions League games the other week and felt that buzz.’

Here, Cole is part of something bigger than just football: he is a key player in a shift of sporting culture. Football once flourished in the area, when Rodney Marsh arrived in 1976 with his long golden locks — complementing the club’s gold and green colours — and they won the North American Soccer League in his first season.

The original Rowdies averaged 30,000 attendances at their peak and Marsh became one of the Bay’s most loved athletes. They folded in 1994, but the Rowdies returned in 2008 and real estate billionaire Bill Edwards became majority owner in 2013. Cole is Edwards’s Marsh.

Cole’s spell at Liverpool saw the midfielder struggle with a series of injury problems

‘There were a couple of times when I needed to get home for a family emergency and Bill let me use his jet,’ Cole says. ‘Imagine how much that costs him. My grandad was a big QPR fan so he grew up telling me stories about Rodney Marsh. He wanted me to play like him. Tampa Bay Rowdies were always in my mind.’

Now, they are challenging towards the top of the United Soccer League’s Eastern Conference and a bid to join the MLS has been lodged at the league’s New York HQ. The recognition Cole brings is a major part of that.

At the club, he is helping coach younger players and has input into decisions with manager Stuart Campbell. Cole wants a crack at management after he retires, although he has not decided when that will be. He has helped coach England Under 18s and is completing his A licence. The ultimate aim will be to manage the national team he is passionate about, having been part of the under—achieving ‘golden generation’.

‘John Stones, Ross Barkley, Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Eric Dier — they’re better than us, better players, a better group, they just need a bit of time and belief and they can do it.

‘Ross Barkley or Dele Alli could win you the next World Cup, but they’ve got to be allowed to make mistakes.

‘The "golden generation" came from the fact we were all so young doing so much in the Premier League. Most of these guys have taken slightly longer to get in the teams but they’ll be more seasoned than us come tournament time.’
