I found these plastic dinosaur minies and decided to paint them to look like Lucky and Wuerhosaurus from paleo pines & and i will show you all the steps in case you want to do something like this yourself
Tumblr media
This was my firs time painting minie figures and i tried using the same techniques people use for DnD figures so you can just look up those tutorials on youtube.
I found these ugly plastic dinosaurs on at a flee market for like 5 hryvnias and this is how they looked before their makeover:
Tumblr media
First thing i did was wash them with soap and strip off all the spray paint from them using polish remover/acetone, untill they were this weird yellowish plastic color. (Idk if this step was necessary but i wanted to romoves all the dirt & dust so the paint sticks better)
Tumblr media
Then i painted them fully with a dark color. I dont advise using pure black. I used a more dark-ish grey with a bit of blue so the undertone works better.
Tumblr media
By the way here are these mfs near a match (for size comparison ofc).
Next i dry-brushed them with a cream color to bring out the texture and leave the dark color in the creases and shadows. I had to go over with a few coats so that they were not too dark.
Tumblr media
Fore some reason they made these guys all wrinkly instead of scaly but it did help with the texture lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(The more i looked at them the more i saw how weird and inaccurate they are. Still cute though)
Tumblr media
And the last steps were to cover them in colorfull washes:
The key is to go slowly, building up the colors layer by layer. I also added a bit of different hues in some places to make the colors less more alive (like a bit of pink on the plates, or some green in certain places idk it just gives more variety to the colors. with out it it the colors look a bit monotonous).
Tumblr media
Also, seriously go play the game!!!! it`s just so cute. Dinosaur designs are cutified but still faithfull to how the animal looked according to science (minus the pastel colors lol) and you just know that it was made by true dinosaur lovers.
They do have a tumblr blog at @paleopinesofficial but i see their content more on tiktok

Any tips on sewing doll clothes? How did you get started and what advice can you give to someone just starting out? Thank you 💗
Thanks for this question, anon! Well, I would advice to always make patterns for the clothing to make absolutely sure you're getting the sizes and shapes right. There are plenty of tutorials on Youtube and Pinterest on how to make such patterns.
My memory is a little foggy since I started doll customizing ten years ago, but I do remember seeing pictures and videos of custom Monster High dolls on Tumblr and Youtube; needless to say, I was blown away and wanted to try it too! 😁
Hmmm, what advice can I give? Well, quite some, actually!
- Use thin brushes for the eyes and lips
- Use acrylic paint
- Apply the paint in thin layers
- Use glossy varnish for the eyes to make them look more lively and use non-glossy varnish for other parts (like the scalp and eyebrows) so the paint won't easily chip off
- Use acetone with cotton swabs and cotton pads to take off the original factory paint (be careful when using this stuff on plastic bodies though, for it could melt the plastic)
- Use pastel crayons for blushing
- Use 100% acrylic yarn for the hair (since this kind of yarn comes in a huge variety of colors, it's cheap and you know you will always have enough) and use a pet's brush with hooks and a hair straightener (with a low setting to avoid burning the yarn) to turn it into doll hair. If a doll has a hard plastic head, you can glue yarn wefts to the head. Use a big sewing needle with a large eye for reroots. You can easily style yarn hair with water (I always use boiled water to flatten the hair or sections of it, like the bangs) And if needed, you can always use hair gel or spray to keep a hairstyle in place
- Look for dolls to customize in thrift shops and flea markets (it will safe you a lot of money and there are plenty of dolls you can find there that are in desperate need of a make over)
But perhaps most important of all... practice makes perfect! Don't feel discouraged if your first custom doll doesn't turn out the way you like it. The more you practice, the more you will get better at it!
I hope I was able to help you with this. Good luck on your doll customizing journey, anon! 🖤
