Today's Bat: Giant Golden-Crowned Flying Fox
This regal species is one of the largest on Earth! They hail from the Philippines, where poaching and deforestation have caused them to lose a large amount of habitat and landed them on the Endangered Species list. These two are preserving their modesty - look up pictures of these bad boys in flight, and you'll get an eyeful.
Environmental Impact: Being fig-eaters, flying foxes are HUGE for fertilization and seed dispersion! Their roosting sites are protected, but their figs are mostly sourced from old-growth trees, and they can travel up to 40 km (about 25 freedom units) a night for food. Their seed-laden poops could be vital for reforestation, if we protect them and their habitats.
🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇/5
Beauty: The most striking thing about a flying fox is, of course, their size. A Giant Golden-Crowned Flying Fox can have a wingspan exceeding five feet, meaning they're longer than I am tall. Each bat has a namesake golden patch of fur crowning their head. You might also notice their wide, soulful eyes - that's because, like most megabat species, these guys rely on eyesight rather than echolocation for navigation. They even bathe themselves, using their giant wings to scoop water! Seemingly perfect, but I'm docking a point for the many penises I had to look at while choosing a picture.
🦇🦇🦇🦇/5
Power: My first instinct says their sheer size should earn top marks, but I wouldn't say a fig puts up much of a fight. Additionally, flying foxes are known to frequently abandon offspring when threatened, which is decidedly unpowerful.
🦇🦇🦇/5
Overall: My heart goes out to these little (giant) dudes. They're already extinct in several of their endemic habitats, and their population is decreasing. For more information on their conservation status, look at the IUCN Red List website.

Can we see some of the cutest flying foxes please?🥺
They all are so cute, it's hard to pick....how about Acerodon jubatus, aka the golden crowned flying fox?
It is one of the largest species of bat in the world on record (two other species, the Indian and the great flying fox outweigh it). It has the longest documented forearm length of any species at an impressive 8.3 inches (21 centimeters).

Weird Creature of the Day: Giant golden-crowned flying fox
What a beautiful large boy! It's Acerodon jubatus!
This is one of the largest bats in the world, weighing up to 1.4 kg (3.1 lb) and growing a wingspan of up to 1.7 m (5.6 ft)-- that's nearly as long as I am tall! That's longer than many humans are tall!
A. jubatus is only found in the Philippines-- one of the most biodiverse places in the world! They are currently endangered. Their populations are declining due to habitat loss and bushmeat hunting (which occurs mostly in rural, impoverished areas). The prevalence of bushmeat hunting comes from a long history of colonization, labor and land exploitation, and natural disasters exacerbated by climate change (which is itself a result of colonizers' exploitation and pollution of the global South).
They live in colonies of hundreds to thousands, and sometimes live in mixed-species groups with large flying foxes (P. vampyrus). The two species often hunt and rest in the same areas, as both are nocturnal.
Moms of this species give birth to 1 individual at most once a year. Not much is known about the child-rearing behaviors of this species, but parent individuals have been observed helping their offspring with food and other needs as they grow into adults. Most individuals live between 13-30 years in their natural habitat.
They are primarily frugivorous and a majority of their diet is figs. In my humble opinion, that shows excellent taste. They travel pretty far from where they roost to where they feed- some individuals have been seen traveling roughly 12 km (7.5 mi) for food.
Like most megabats, they don't echolocate. Thankfully, the figs are good sports and don't try to run far.

Facts of the Day: 🦇Giant Golden-Crowned Flying Foxes🦇
Scientific Name: Acerodon jubatus
Wingspan: 5 feet 6 inch wingspan on average
Weight: 2.4 lbs on average
Lifespan: 15 years old in the wild
Reproduction: This species reproduction cycle is mostly unknown due to their rarity, but it’s believed they have two breeding seasons a year but females can only produce one pup a year.
Diet: These bats are herbivores, mostly eating fruits like figs, but will eat other fruits and leaves of plants.
Habitat: These bats are found in the Philippines, the Palawan region as well as the Batanes and Babuyan island groups. The preferred habitat of these animals is large, primary, or mature secondary forests, preferably areas uninhabited by humans.
Status: Endangered
Summary: Giant Golden-Crowned Flying Foxes are a species of megabat, and Old World fruit bat, that is the largest bat on record with it’s wingspan of 5 feet 6 inches. This bat, much like most megabats, does not use echolocation as they do not need this ability to locate their food. Instead, they have highly keen eyesight at night, and a powerful sense of smell that they use to locate their food. During the seasons, when fruits are highly available, these bats will gather in large congregations with other bat species, grouping up to 150,000 individuals in areas with abundance of fruit.

Wingtober Day 10: “Gigantic”
Which species of bat is the largest depends on who you ask (personally, I think several of them are tied) but google suggests that the official answer is the giant golden-crowned flying fox, which can have up to about a six-foot wingspan and weigh up to two pounds. Not bad, really.
I drew the wing of this magnificent megabat and decided to stop there- speaking of gigantic things, it always blows my mind that a bat’s wing is nothing more than a gigantic hand. Even some of the littlest bats have longer fingers than I do!

Animal of the Day!
Golden-crowned Flying Fox (Acerodon jubatus)
(Photo from Animal Spot)
Conservation Status- Endangered
Habitat- Philippines
Size (Weight/Length)- 1 kg; 170 cm wingspan
Diet- Fruit; Leaves
Cool Facts- The golden-crowned flying fox has the largest wingspan of any bat species. However, you don’t have to worry about this friendly giant drinking your blood. These flying foxes diet is made up of mostly figs. Golden-crowned flying foxes cannot use echolocation and must use sight to find food, often resulting in eating during dawn and dusk. These flying foxes are extremely social and often form colonies with other species of flying fox. Due to illegal poaching for meat and deforestation, conservationists are racing to save this amazing species. Luckily, local farmers are working with conservationists to protect the golden-crowned flying foxes’ habitat from poachers.
Rating- 12/10 (A flying puppy.)

Storm Hawks 'Bird' OC Contest - April 2022
I hope everyone enjoyed last month's bird! This time I've got something really special for y'all.
April Fool's!
Yep, this month we're mixing things up a bit. This big guy is the giant golden-crowned flying fox bat (Acerodon jubatus), discovered in 1831. It's a species of megabat native to the Philippines, and is a frugivore that eats primarily figs and certain types of leaves. They're one of the largest species of bats in the world, and typically spend the day sleeping in large roosts in groups numbering in the thousands.
Unfortunately they are also a threatened species due to poaching and deforestation. While protections have been put in place, they're not very heavily enforced.
This month's deadline: Sunday the 24th of April.
Rules for this month's contest are below the cut. They've been altered slightly to be clearer in certain areas, so please make sure to refresh yourself on them.
Elements of the chosen bird's (or in this case bat's) appearance should be included in the design, particularly their colours.
Minimum requirements for drawn entries to be put in the winner's vote are a name, occupation, the character's home/birth Terra and at least one paragraph (or about 100 words) of written backstory.
Minimum requirements for written (i.e. written dossiers without art, or mini-fics for the character) are 500 words including backstory and appearance. Feel free to make a mini-fic out of this challenge, I'll make sure to link it with the final collage as well.
Entrants who are part of the Storm Hawks discord server will have the chance of getting a custom role for the next month! If you’re not part of the discord server, please ask for an invite if you’re interested.
Make sure to tag me in your entries and also DM me with a link to your entry. Tumblr is not always reliable about notifications for this sort of thing, and I don't want to risk missing anyone's entries, so better safe than sorry.
The winner of the vote will receive a free coloured sketch piece of two characters of their choosing from me.
