That's more than an hour longer than the desktop-replacement average (4:23), more than twice as long as the Leopard Pro (2:32), but just a tad longer than the Strix (5:25).ĭuring regular use, the Predator stayed nice and cool, thanks in part to its metal Aeroblade 3D fan and five heat pipes. It endured for 5:36 on the Laptop Mag Battery Test, which browses the web continuously over Wi-Fi. That ties the Strix (3:19), and is just ahead of the average and the Leopard Pro, both at 3:24.Īs far as gaming notebooks go, the Predator lasts a decent amount of time on a charge. The Predator competed the OpenOffice Spreadsheet test, pairing 20,000 names and addresses, in 3 minutes and 19 seconds. The Strix, however, wasn't as fast as the Predator, at just 221.3MBps. The average (494.5MBps) is quicker, as is the Leopard Pro (565.5MBps). It took the Predator 16 seconds to transfer 4.97GB of files, which translates to a rate of 318.1 megabytes per second. The touchpad made a crunching sound, like someone spilled some granola beneath the plastic. On the Geekbench 4 overall performance test, the Predator earned a score of 14,305, beating out the desktop-replacement average (13,212), the Leopard Pro (13,665, i7-7700HQ) and the Strix (13,693, i7-7700HQ). Although I appreciate that Acer jammed a number pad on here, the arrow keys and right shift key are way too close together, and it's easy to hit the wrong one. The WASD keys are highlighted in red, which is a nice touch, but being able to pick any color I want with the backlight would be even nicer.

Other laptops in this price range, like the Strix, have keyboards with full RGB backlighting, so it's disappointing to see Acer settle exclusively for red. On the typing test, I reached 107 words per minute, my usual average, but with a 4 percent error rate (twice what I usually get wrong). It requires 70 grams of actuation to press down, which resulted in a comfortable keystroke that didn't pop up fast enough, which could be an issue for gaming. The Predator's keyboard has a deep 1.6 millimeters of travel, but it doesn't feel as snappy as I like. The average is 291 nits, and both the Strix (285 nits) and the Leopard Pro (245 nits) were even dimmer. It wasn't as vivid as the Leopard Pro's 165 percent, however.Īcer's screen is far brighter than similar notebooks at an average 373 nits on our light meter. The Predator's screen covers 139 percent of the sRGB color gamut, beating out the desktop-replacement average (129 percent) and the Strix (124 percent). When I played Mass Effect: Andromeda, I could see my alien enemies even in a dark cavern in their base, and the blue skies on foreign planets were bright and clear. And the details were so sharp that I could make out every sequin on Jessica Chastain's dress. When I watched the trailer for Molly's Game, the green poker tables were so vivid I felt like I was in a Vegas casino.

In conclusion, this 2018 version of the Helios 300 performed very well in our tests while plugged in, regardless if it ran daily chores, games or software that put the hardware to serious work. Normally, the CPU shouldn’t have a major impact on gaming performance, so the differences below are mostly due to our faulty sample at that point. We ran a few of our test games on this sample and compared the results with those of the Helios 300 tested last year, with the i7-7700HQ processor and GTX 1060 graphics. Gaming performance was pretty solid as well, with no issues on the GPU side, however the CPU oftenly drops to its stock speeds with the more demanding titles, as you can see below. But even in this case there’s room for improvement with undervolting. With Cinebench R15 in a loop we noticed a slight drop in scores to about 1000 points after several runs, as the CPU clocked down faster from its maximum Turbo Boost speeds as the internals built heat.

The CPU and GPU run close to their full potential at maximum TurboBoost speeds in most activities and tasks, and the benchmark results are very solid. Performance remains consistent with demanding loads as well, as long as the laptop is plugged in. In very few words though, the Predator Helios 300 is a fairly bulky 15-inch full-size laptop, with a nice plastic and metal construction, but also a fair amount of popping-red design accents, aggressive elements and big logos. We’re not going to focus on this aspect, as on the outside the 2018 Helios is identical to the 2017 model, which we covered in depth over here. Nvidia’s similar feature, called DLSS, is supported by dozens of games, including Metro Exodus. Metro Exodus, for example, will not support AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution due to compatibility issues with its rendering techniques. While AMD announced an AI-driven upscaling feature to improve performance in these situations, it won’t be available until June 22, and it’s still not clear what specific games will support it from that date moving forward. AMD hardware can’t beat Nvidia in ray tracing (the technical term for rendering realistic lighting effects in real-time), which is supported by an increasingly large number of games. This laptop’s AMD Radeon RX6800M graphics led it to victory over the Acer across our test suite, sometimes by a wide margin (it averaged 25 fps quicker in Metro Exodus, for example). One laptop the Helios 300 doesn’t beat is the new Asus ROG Strix G15 AMD Advantage Edition. This includes an Acer Predator Triton 500 we reviewed with Nvidia RTX 2080 SUPER, an Asus TUF A15 with Nvidia RTX 2060, and a Razer Blade Advancedwith Nvidia RTX 2080 Super MAX-Q. These figures beat most gaming laptops we’ve tested in the past year. 60 frames a second is the minimum to hit these days, but obviously the RTX 3070 blows right past that.

But more important than synthetic benchmark scores is the actual in-game performance Metro Exodus exceeded 72 frames per second (fps) at Ultra detail and 1080p resolution, while Shadow of the Tomb Raider averaged 102 fps at Highest settings and the same resolution. 3DMark’s Fire Strike test, which measures gaming graphics performance, spat out a score of 20407, one of the highest we've recorded to-date. We saw strong scores across our entire range of benchmarks. Intel’s six-core processor isn’t that impressive, especially considering what AMD’s Ryzen 5000-series brings in comparison, but the Nvidia GPU easily makes up for its shortcomings.
