George Frederick Findlater was born on 15th February 1872 at Turriff, Aberdeenshire.
George Findlater, went on to be awarded a V.C for his action during the Tirah campaign, an expedition into the mountains to secure the Khyber pass and the northern approaches to India.
Findlater attended the school in Turriff but left at a young age to work as a farm labourer; back then children were permitted to leave school at thirteen. Two months after his sixteenth birthday, on 7th April 1888, he travelled to Aberdeen and enlisted in the 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders and was sent out to Ceylon.
He transferred to the 1st Battalion for a more active military career on the North-West Frontier. He was a private when the battalion stormed the hills at Malakand. His boot was hit but he was unhurt. In Dec 1896 he became a piper and as such was part of the Tinah Field Force in 1897.
At Dargai he was one of 5 pipers in the “Gordons.” The pipe-major was unable to continue after being hit in the chest. During the action Findlater claimed that he did not hear the order to play Cock o’ the North which is a marching tune. He chose to play a quick strathspey, The Haughs of Cromdales which he thought more suitable. He felt sick with pain after he was shot whilst three-quarters of the way across an exposed strip of land. He fell and, leaning against a rock, continued to play his pipes as blood ran from his wounds.
He became a bit of a celebrity when the Gordons returned home and received his VC in May 1898 retiring from the army soon afterwards. His citation reads:
‘During the attack on the Dargai Heights on 20 October 1897, Piper Findlater, after being shot through both feet and unable to stand, sat up, under a heavy fire, playing the Regimental March to encourage the charge of the Gordon Highlanders.’
He received many requests to perform in public. The War Office were scandalised that he was having to augment his meagre pension by taking money for performances. At the Alhambra Theatre he received £100 a week, but soldiers were barred from attending. In that year, 1898, he was involved in a lawsuit for breach of promise and the audiences began to turn on him. So he left the country for a while and toured North America.
In 1899 he returned home and married Nellie. He set them up with a farm in Banffshire and had 5 children. When the First World War broke out he re-enlisted and was appointed pipe-major in the 9th Battalion. But due to ill health he had to retire in 1915. He spent the rest of his life as a farmer and died in 1947 aged 70.
The medals George Findlater won and his pipes are on display at The Gordon Highlanders Museum Aberdeen.

Two Polished 5,500-Year-Old Stone Balls Found in Neolithic Scottish Tomb
The rare artifacts were probably used as both weapons and symbols of power
Archaeologists excavating a tomb at one of Scotland’s oldest known monuments have discovered two polished, 5,500-year-old stone balls, reports Alison Campsie for the Scotsman.
The team made the find at Tresness, a chambered cairn on the Orkney island of Sanday that dates to around 3500 B.C.E.
“A cracking find from the tomb!” wrote Hugo Anderson-Whymark, senior curator of prehistory at the National Museum of Scotland, on Twitter after the first ball’s discovery. “Only 20 or so Neolithic polished stone balls have been found in Orkney and few have been recovered from secure contexts.”
Anderson-Whymark later posted that the second ball was “the size of a cricket ball, perfectly spherical and beautifully finished. It’s split along bedding in the banded sandstone but will be amazing when conserved.”
Researchers have previously found plain stone balls at other sites in Orkney, including the Neolithic village of Skara Brae and the complex of buildings known as the Ness of Brodgar, reports the Press and Journal’s Ellie Milne. Archaeologists have also unearthed more than 500 carved stone balls, some in Orkney but most elsewhere.
Aberdeenshire, located on the Scottish mainland more than 100 miles south of Orkney, is particularly rich in these artifacts. One, known as the Towie ball, is carved into four knobs, three of which are decorated with intricate spiral patterns. Other examples found in the region feature distinctive patterns of spikes and ridges.
Researchers say the stones were probably used as both weapons and symbols of power. Remains of people of different ages and genders found in Orkney show signs of blunt force skull injuries possibly caused by such tools. But the discovery of polished balls in a burial is unusual.
The tomb at Tresness is split into several chambers. Vicki Cummings, an archaeologist at the University of Central Lancaster, tells the Scotsman that the tomb was probably connected to a Neolithic settlement at Cata Sand, about a mile and a half away.
“We have got the tomb and the settlement where people are living and they are more or less contemporary, so it seems very likely that the people building this monument were the people living at the settlement at Cata Sands,” she says.
Cummings adds that the landscape of the area was very different during the Neolithic period. Sea levels were lower, meaning the coast was farther from the tomb and the settlement, and the area was covered in trees.
Archaeological sites on the Scottish archipelago form a Unesco World Heritage site known as the Heart of Neolithic Orkney. Monuments, residential areas and artifacts found in the area testify to the farming practices of people who lived in northwest Europe before 4000 B.C.E.
In addition to the balls, notes the team on its blog, excavation of the cairn has uncovered fragments of pottery, knives and the antler of a Roe deer. As Cummings writes in a blog post, this season’s dig revealed how Bronze Age people altered the monument, removing stones and adding a new outer wall made up of large stones brought in from elsewhere.
“The Bronze Age cairn would have been really impressive,” she writes.
Archaeologists first explored the tomb in the 1980s. In 2017, a new series of excavations began “with an added sense of urgency,” according to Gizmodo’s George Dvorsky. The site faces erosion and the collapse of the cliff where it stands, so researchers are attempting to document the site and collect as many artifacts as possible before it’s too late. They have created 3-D models of the cairn that highlight sections constructed during the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age.
“At the end of the day, sadly this is a site that is disappearing into the sea so we are extracting this information before it is basically lost forever,” Cummings said.

Helen Chavez 1959 ~ 2020
Sitting in silent conflict today, some numbness, many tears, grief, and the happiest memories that make my heart smile. To lose a close friend (whom I referred to as my big sister for the last 16 years) to complications from covid-19 and other health issues, is a blow I could not be prepared for. Yet to sit with my memories of her is a relished joy.
Tumblr media
Many knew her as “Hellmistress” on the Sony Pictures Hellboy message boards in 2003. As I was an occasional visitor in those boards while filming Hellboy, I took special note of the witty, gentle, sarcastic, encouraging posts from this woman I found myself wanting to know more of.
She made her way into those message boards by way of her love for Ron Perlman, as she also was a contributing writer for a site called ThePerlmanPages dot com. But once in there, and once we got to interacting, Helen and I both found kindred spirits in each other, about the same age, about the same irreverent sense of humor.
She jokingly described herself as “windswept and interesting.” When we finally met in person the first time around the premiere events Guillermo del Toro had arranged for these fans of Hellboy in April 2004, I found this description of her to be true.  All I had to hear was that Helen had sold a cow to finance her flight from Scotland, and I knew I was right about this one!  Yes, she and her husband Mark raised cattle on their rural farm outside Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  But she was also a highly knowledgeable archivist at the local museum there.  With a thirst for learning, and a lover of history, artifacts, classic film, TV, music, literature, science fiction, and all things geekery, she did indeed earn her “windswept and interesting” title.
Tumblr media
(Our first in-person meeting after “Hellebration” 2004 with Sony Pictures Hellboy message board regulars, Left to Right: Maurice Mpayamaguru, Dougie, Pat Paone, Helen Chavez - who was so excited to be having a burger with American ketchup!)
She flew away the next day in 2004, but that would not be the last of this Helen. Upon returning home to Scotland, her friend and ThePerlmanPages creator Pat Paone (who had also been on this trip) said something to Helen that lingered in the air... “After this entire ‘Hellebration’ weekend in Los Angeles, do you realize you haven’t stopped talking about Doug Jones?” which struck Helen odd since she was a devout Perlman fan who was gushing about someone other than Ron after a weekend to celebrate a movie in which Ron held the title character.
That’s when I received an email from Helen proposing an official website she wanted to create for me. So was born TheDougJonesExperience dot com, a site that was lovingly poured over and updated by Helen as her pet project that she never let me pay a dime for, no matter how I tried, from 2004 to 2014, when her own life required her to take pause. That pause from the site included finishing up her Masters Degree, still working full time at the museum, still tending the cattle, and now caregiving to her husband’s failing health ... followed by her own health issues.
She was ever the stoic type, though, who never ever, EVER wanted to be a burden on me, so I would rarely hear of her trials in life unless I told her, “I’m not hanging up until you start talking.”  She would always brush off her own issues and turn things back around to doting on me like the protective big sister she loved being.  She also took in Mrs. Laurie as her little sister with great pride.
To sum up the amount of life shared with this incredible woman would take volumes.  Volumes that could be tied together with one thread.... “cheerleader.” She championed me personally and professionally with the kind of care and tireless energy that gave my own mother and Mrs. Laurie a run for their money!
Her cheerleading came in the form of not only that exhaustive website with endless fan correspondence as she wrote with a voice that was uncannily like my own, then later helping administrate “The Tank” forum on DelToroFilms dot com where “FanSapiens” would gather to chat about little ol’ me, but also trips to see me when I was in the United Kingdom for a fan convention in Birmingham, or a make-up trade show in London.  She also ingratiated herself to Guillermo del Toro and was invited to visit our Hellboy II: The Golden Army filming set in Budapest with her old friend Pat Paone, spending a large part of that visit with me through my whole day, from make-up, to the Troll Market set, to lunchtime, to afternoon naps in my trailer for all of us, to touring the city on a rare day off.
Tumblr media
(During Hellboy 2 set visit 2007 at Budapest, Hungary’s “Hero Square” pictured Left to Right: Pat Paone, Dougie, Helen Chavez)
And I could never tally up the countless hours of phone chats, messenger chats, book-length emails, where she was often celebrating successes with me, calming my nerves when I had failed, giving me some well-needed big sisterly advice on life, or playfully nagging me to sleep and eat more.  Boy, was she ever stern about those last two.  If I even hinted that I had been pushing myself too hard, not sleeping enough, not eating right, she would give me “the look.”  You don’t want “the look.”   It was that raised eyebrows, all-knowing eyes searing into me kind of look, with a probing stare over the top of her glasses into my soul kind of look. You could hide nothing from her when she gave “the look.”
I adored hearing all her tales from her museum, getting history lessons all the while about who used what in what century in what country for what purpose, everything from farm tools to ancient toilet paper.  To keep me in her loop, one year for Christmas she sent me some ancient Roman coins, after I had mentioned how I love looking at coins, waving it off with, “those things are so easy to come by.” Her gifts were always accompanied by authentic Scottish shortbread cookies.  But my favorite story of hers was the mummy head she had no better place for, so he lived under her desk ... for years.  And of course, she named him “Marlon.”
I’ve always been a hugger, but Helen is the one who taught me about “Bosies.” The difference being that a Bosie is a huggle that doesn’t need to end anytime soon, where you envelop the other person in a cradle that makes them feel safe.  She was masterful at those Bosies.
I could tell Helen stories for hours, as could so many of you puppies whose lives she touched with her listening skills, mentorship, and her tireless encouragement to keep all of us creatives reaching for our dreams.
Tumblr media
(Pictued at “Hellebration” 2008 with “FanSapiens” Left to Right: Tim Rosenberger, Katie McGregor, Helen Chavez, Stephanie Metz, Dougie, Kate Daley, Seth Lombardi)
Tumblr media
(Pictured at Hellboy 2 premiere after party 2008 with DelToroFilms regulars; Top row: Paul Kindschi, Gary Deocampo, Maurice Mpayamaguru. Bottom row: Helen Chavez, Dougie)
But I’ll leave you with one last story.  It was 2008, and we flew Helen out to Los Angeles (I didn’t want her to sell another cow) to join all the festivities for the premiere week of Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and to see the finished product of the film set she visited with me the year before. Everything from having a salon day with Mrs. Laurie to get all done up for the red carpet premiere, and the next day she was sporting a fancy fish-print top to dutifully lead Team Blue (those beloved FanSapiens) at the Del Toro sponsored “Hellebration” party and screening night. Another experience I wanted to give her that week was her first press junket, so Mrs. Laurie gladly went to her own job that day, and Helen went with me down to the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, where many film press junkets take place on a floor full of press suites. These are high energy days, as one after another, TV, radio, print, and dot com journalists interview us back to back all day. Helen watched from behind the monitors with Publicist John, and every time I glanced over, she was just beaming as she gave me a thumbs-up. At the end of this marathon day, we were heading home in the back of the studio-hired limo, and my eyes were getting droopy in the dark.  Helen glanced over the top of her glasses with “the look” and said with all the doting mother, favorite auntie, protective big sister she had in her, “Awe, little brother mine, come here.” I leaned my head onto her shoulder, while she pet my hair and told me how overjoyed she was with this phase of my life, and how watching me handle all the press that day made her “buttons burst with pride,” a phrase she used many a time. She always knew how to bring such peace, such calm, such encouragement, such a safe harbor.  The next thing I knew the car stopped in front of the house, and I awoke with her still holding my weary head.
Oh how I wish for one more limo ride.  One more chance to soak in her uplifting words, so I might know how to handle whatever comes next.
She went by many names -- Hellmistress, Webmaster Helen, or her preferred “Webmistress” Helen, Auntie Helen, Mentor Helen, Therapist Helen, Dear Friend Helen, Big Sister Helen, but there was only one Helen in this wacky world. She leaves a void that no one else can fill. It’s painful how much I miss her already.
I pray the angels gave her a thrilling ride to her rightful place in Heaven.  I can almost feel her gaze again right now, as she sits at the edge of a crescent moon, tilts her gaze down over the top of her glasses and gives me “the look”.....
Alright, Big Sis, I’ll eat something and get to sleep now.

The Daily Thistle
The Daily Thistle – News From Scotland
Wednesday 16th May 2018
"Madainn Mhath” …Fellow Scot, I hope the day brings joy to you….  Well, we have made it half way through the week, and so far all is good, weather in Estepona is perfect, warm in the day and window open at night so it cannot be bad… Bella and I enjoy this time of the year as we walk so much the climate determines where and how far we walk, Today for the first walk, we went to the ocean, just the sound of the waves washing against the shore to me,  are restorative in the melody of the surf…. No matter how difficult things are, the waves take away that frustration and bring a balance and harmony back to life.. along with a good cup of Colombian Coffee that is…
FEARS OVER TREE FELLING THREAT TO WILDCATS IN CLASHINDARROCH FOREST…. A wildcat group is concerned about the impact of tree felling on the population of the animals in Clashindarroch Forest in Aberdeenshire. Wildcat Haven, which has footage of a large cat in the forest, claims the Forestry Commission is carrying out "extensive commercial exploitation". It also fears plans for two large wind farms will threaten the wildcats. Forest Enterprise Scotland (FES) said the management of forests created a very good environment for wildcats. FES is an agency of the Forestry Commission, which manages Scotland's national forest estate. The agency said that if the wind farm proposals for the area went ahead, they would be subject to a full environmental impact assessment, public consultation and planning processes. It also said the turbines themselves would cover a relatively small area and the rest of the area within the boundary and near it would be restocked. The Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) and Scottish Wildcat Action (SWA) project has named the area as one of its five priority sites for wildcat conservation. The independent group Wildcat Haven said it had identified at least 13 wildcats living there, including the large wildcat which has been nicknamed the Beast. The group is concerned that the clearing of trees and the installation of the planned wind farms threaten considerable disturbance to the wildcats which could lead females to abandon or even eat their kittens. Wildcat Haven's Kev Bell said he asked Forestry Commission Scotland to cease its actions more than a year ago. "We're appalled by what's going on," he said. "The exact area where we've filmed the Beast just weeks ago, is right now being clear-felled, right when wildcats are breeding and raising kittens.
TESCO STARTS HOME DELIVERIES…..  A Tesco lorry has crashed into a house in Rothes, Moray. The HGV struck two cars before ploughing into the house on the High Street at about 03:20. The driver was taken to Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin where it is understood he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries. Earlier, a 22-year-old man was taken to hospital in a critical condition after his Mazda 3 was involved in a crash with a Land Rover Discovery in Mintlaw. The crash happened on the A952, near Hardyards at about 22:35 on Saturday. The Mazda driver was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where police said he is being treated for life-threatening injuries. The 62-year-old woman driving the Land Rover was taken to the same hospital with minor injuries. Sgt Andrew Meikleham, of Police Scotland, said: "Inquiries into the circumstances of the incident are at an early stage and I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or saw either vehicle prior to the incident to contact Police Scotland."
DRUGS WORTH £100,000 IN VEHICLE ON A9 NEAR INVERNESS…. Cannabis worth £100,000 has been found in a vehicle stopped by police on the A9 near Inverness. Police Scotland said the recovery was made by officers south of city on Friday afternoon. Two men, aged 45 and 43 years old, were arrested in connection with the seizure. They are expected to appear at Inverness Sheriff Court.
PILOT SCHEME TO FAST-TRACK MIDWIVES FOR HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS…. Twenty nurses will be offered the chance to train as midwives in the pilot scheme. Nurses in the Highlands and Islands have been offered the chance to be fast-tracked to become fully qualified midwives. Health Secretary Shona Robison has announced the £500,000 pilot scheme which would see the newly trained midwives working in the region. The University of Highlands and Islands will run the 20 month-long training. The Scottish government is helping to fund tuition fees, bursary support and salary costs for 20 students. NHS Highland and NHS Western Isles have welcomed the pilot scheme. Both health boards have struggled to recruit people to certain roles, including midwives. Ms Robison said: "We are taking action to widen access to midwifery and this pilot programme will allow nurses - both living in the Western Isles and Highlands and Islands and those who live elsewhere but wish to work in the region - to become registered midwives faster than the standard courses currently on offer. "I hope as a result of this, more nurses will consider a career in midwifery where there will be more posts available. "Applications are now open and I would encourage those who have considered training to become a midwife in the past but haven't pursued it to apply."
STUDY INTO ECONOMIC IMPACT AND POTENTIAL OF ROBERT BURNS…. Academics are to assess the economic value of Robert Burns to Scotland. A team at the University of Glasgow will also look at the future potential for the bard to boost jobs in hotels, restaurants and tourism. Led by Prof Murray Pittock, researchers will examine how the worldwide appeal of Burns is already supporting Scottish business and jobs. The Scottish government-funded study is believed to be the first to look at the economic impact of such an icon. Prof Pittock, of the Centre for Robert Burns Studies, said he hoped to establish how the fascination with Burns translated into economic return for Scotland. "Tourism and food and drink are two of the three largest industries in Scotland, which in their turn reflect a highly visible national Scottish brand in the global marketplace, a brand which owes an enormous debt to Scotland's 18th and 19th century history," he said. "We need to understand the relationship between our culture and our economy more fully in order to maximise our already world-leading position." Within the UK, Scotland attracts more culture and heritage visitors than anywhere outside London. The Robert Burns museum in Alloway is second only to Shakespeare among UK writers' museums in visitor numbers. Prof Pittock, pro-vice principal at the university, added: "With up to nine million people now attending Burns Suppers every year across the world and the recent decision by Norwegian Airlines to put his name on the tail fin of one of their planes, the global importance of Burns is established. "What is important is to know now is the value he brings to the Scotland, and how he can be used to further enhance our economy."
On that note I will say that I hope you have enjoyed the news from Scotland today,
Our look at Scotland today is an early photograph of Glasgow University... seemly fitting as we were discussing the worth of Robbie Burns to Scotland earlier....
Tumblr media
A Sincere Thank You for your company and Thank You for your likes and comments I love them and always try to reply, so please keep them coming, it's always good fun, As is my custom, I will go and get myself another mug of "Colombian" Coffee and wish you a safe Wednesday 16th May 2018 from my home on the southern coast of Spain, where the blue waters of the Alboran Sea washes the coast of Africa and Europe and the smell of the night blooming Jasmine and Honeysuckle fills the air…and a crazy old guy and his dog Bella go out for a walk at 4:00 am…on the streets of Estepona…
All good stuff....But remember it’s a dangerous world we live in
Be safe out there…

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
George Frederick Findlater was born on 15th February 1872 at Turriff, Aberdeenshire.
Now I’m never comfortable with posts like this, largely due to my belief that as part of “The Empire”  we committed  many atrocities, hence you don’t see many posts like this from me.
During the action Findlater claimed that he did not hear the order to play Cock o' the North which is a marching tune.
'During the attack on the Dargai Heights on 20 October 1897, Piper Findlater, after being shot through both feet and unable to stand, sat up, under a heavy fire, playing the Regimental March to encourage the charge of the Gordon Highlanders.'
You can read the full version of the story of this brave man here http://www.findlater.org.uk/Piper.htm
