"Abel Tasman No. 2"
56 x 42 cm | soft pastels on watercolour paper
We took a water taxi trip from Marahau to Anchorage and then walked back along the Abel Tasman Coastal Track. I think this day alone has given me enough inspiration for years. The Abel Tasman National Park offers the perfect combination for me of a forest right next to the sea. It is definitely one of the places I want to return to and spend more time painting.

A tiring week! After getting some rest over the weekend I continued on towards Tākaka. On my way I stopped at Ngarua caves and got an almost private tour of the beautiful dripstone and treasures that they had to offer, including genuine Moa bones!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not much further down the road and one day later, I undertook the hike up Tākaka hill, and was absolutely stunned by the views. It was extremely windy up there, a local told me that was due to a storm coming up from the Southwest, carrying cold air from Antarctica. I had to diligently stick to the path because there were loads of Tomo, or holes, in the surrounding grass that led down to more underground cave networks. One fall could be tens of meters deep!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A little further along I stopped for a hike to Wainui falls. I was hesitant to go for it because I had done quite some hiking already, and what was another waterfall, right? However, I still pushed myself to go, and I'm so glad I did because it was a fantastic little hike with a great prize at the end 🤩
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the end of the day I had made it to Tōtaranui campground, almost deserted this time of year save for the hordes of Pūkeko, Weka, Kereru, Piwakawaka and Tūi, and I believe I may even have heard a Kiwi at night. I got some advice from the lone ranger that was up there, and set out the next day for my longest hike yet: to Separation point and back. This is the place where Golden Bay and Tasman Bay meet, and I think it may have been my favourite hike yet too! It was a bit more challenging, with parts of the trail including steep rocky faces, wading through bushes and tramping through the sand on the beaches. The end point was absolutely spectacular, and I was grateful for the little lighthouse there providing some shelter from the strong winds, or I might have been blown right into the water. I even got lucky and spotted a bunch of seals relaxing on the rocks not far from me!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately I managed to get an eye infection on the hike (switch out your contacts in time, kids) so the following night was a very unpleasant one, but luckily it already felt better in the morning (and yes I took a Covid test and it was negative :) ). I said goodbye to Abel Tasman national park, at least for now, and made my way back to town. I struggled for a moment with some last-minute changes to my plans, but can now report I've settled in for at least a few days with an extremely kind family in Golden Bay as a first time WWOOFer :) I'm super grateful for their hospitality and look forward to getting to know them better!

Feeling absolutely smashed after a big big hike today! Got the taxi to Split Apple Rock, then Adele Island again to see more seals (got a lot closer this time), then got dropped off at Torrent bay. Four and a half hours later Paul the skipper picked me up again at Onetahuti beach. It had been raining at the start of the hike but it soon cleared up, but the second I set foot on the beach it started coming down again. Great timing! Much too tired to draw a map right now or write more, so have some pretty pictures from today:
