New chapter of With Its Head Under One Wing up today! (Finally.) x
In which Newt arrives very late; Tina and Newt...communicate; Newt apparently has secrets (though he’s not the only one); the two engage in something approaching a heart-to-heart but its really just Newt unintentionally courting her; and then a [non-literal] bomb drops, precipitating a mini-adventure, next chapter.
Excerpt
They finished dinner with far more speed than she’d intended, for it quickly became clear—at least, following her unintentionally provocative press conference on Tuesday—that dining in a Jewish wizarding deli as Chief Auror Goldstein with her eccentric, gentile, beau Newt Scamander was anything but conducive to a meaningful, private conversation... (Newt hadn’t even been able to finish telling her his story about the fellow in Greece who’d tried to sell him hair elixir infused with unicorn blood.)
Tina, meanwhile, had nearly jumped out of her skin when one Hal Abadi of the Shalom Standard slipped into their booth with a strained smile, an apologetic stack of black-and-white cookies, and a whispered promise to cover them if they wanted to slip out. (Tina had apparently been very visibly wearying of tossing up eavesdropping deflection charms every few minutes as people pointedly peered at her over their evening broadsheets; and Newt’s face had long settled into a resigned grimace, though he continued to crunch determinedly at an oversized pickle.)
Tina took Hal up on the offer—promising him the first question at next week’s press conference in return—before wrapping up her unfinished pastrami in a transfigured wax bag. She gratefully tugged Newt away from the table as Abadi cast a subtle series of misdirection spells behind them, all the way to the door.
Outside in the late summer air, Newt collapsed against the front of a bookshop with a confused grin and—half-obscured beneath a hanging basket of sprawling, magenta petunias—huffed out a breath. He tightened his grip on his case before fixing her with a direct but querulous look:
“I’m almost sorry to ask, Tina, but... What in Merlin’s name has been going on over here?”
She crossed her arms tightly before reaching down with a spit-slicked finger to rub a splotch of dirt off her oxfords. He was still looking at her when she straightened back up.
“It’s a — long story…”
He gazed at her imploringly from behind the petunias.
“Look, it’s one that’s probably better saved for whenever you decide to share what I’m sure is a gripping tale regarding your late arrival. But elsewhere,” she clarified. “In private.”
Newt watched her for another long moment and Tina watched him back, but he eventually nodded, ducked out from beneath the plant and offered her his arm, after which they proceeded down the street with a relatively comfortable silence between them.
They walked the length of Hall & Harrison Square to reach the public Floo hearths (for Newt was not in the mood to be dragged along again via apparition so soon after three days on a boat), only stopping once at an apothecary for him to pop in and replenish a handful of ingredients.
In the end, Tina only had to threaten to jinx one journalist on their way, a fellow who wanted ‘just’ a statement on one of the Auror Office’s ongoing cases.
Plus an update on Grindelwald.
And then also a response to the lecture Tina had given the New York Ghost regarding antisemitism on Tuesday…
Now, in her defense, Tina had not actually threatened the reporter until he’d tried to send a message to his photographer when Newt emerged from the apothecary behind her—balancing a spray of vibrant wolfsbane and dried knotgrass on one hip while clutching several bulky wax bags to his chest—for the journalist seemed to think the two of them would make excellent Spellbound material…
Newt had found the whole thing overwhelming but – also – endlessly amusing. At least, until Tina had threatened to hex him, too, at which point he’d disappeared into his case—in the middle of the damn promenade—faster than Tina had ever seen.
Nevertheless, a few minutes later, he emerged ingredient-less with a fond smile that warmed her chest and lit him all the way to his eyes.
Tina had had to shake her head to regain concentration, before reaching deep into a trouser pocket for the Floo powder.
They disappeared from the Square in a burst of flickering flame.
Footnotes from the chapter under ‘read more’!
Footnotes from the chapter:
1. Did I craft this bouquet based on (a) what I thought would look pretty; (b) their meanings in ‘the language of flowers’; and (c), partially, what I thought might represent Tina visually and symbolically? I absolutely did. My tentative research indicates the following meanings for the flowers:
Coneflower/echinacea: no identified meaning, but they are used for health & healing traditionally
Rudbeckia (black-eyed susan): justice
Lavender: devotion
Chives: usefulness
Lisianthus: no identified meaning, but—though often perceived as delicate—they are exceptionally hardy
Baby's breath: ever-lasting love(?)
Red or scarlet poppy: consolation, fantastic extravagance
Ranunculus: ‘You are radiant with charms’
Honeysuckle: bonds of love
2. Absolutely humiliating that I did this, but here’s the shipping news from Wednesday August 16, 1933 (published in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle), showing a boat that picked up passengers in Southampton, UK was set to arrive in NYC—at the identified docks—on August 17th. The things you can learn on the Internet… (Fun fact, which I’m sharing because it is a common misconception: Transatlantic trips did not take a month in the 1920s & 1930s. We would’ve all been screwed in the WWs if that were the case. Think a handful of days to a little over a week. </end infodump>)
3. In-text links on Guanyin.
4. Guanyin is, in fact, often artistically represented with the Chinese mythological creature, the Qilin, which I assume inspired she-who-must-not-be-named to create the FB Qilin. It also appears in other Asian cultures.
5. The name of Hall & Harrison Square—the NYC equivalent of Diagon Alley I made up—is inspired by the first witch trials in New York state and surrounding areas. You can read more here (also linked in text).
6. For non-US and/or non-Jewish folks, the Jewish Deli may need a bit of explanation. (For those looking for a pop-cultural “touchstone”, Jewish delis have recently been featured in Amazon Prime’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which—admittedly—has had wildly mixed reviews from Jewish consumers. There’s also a famous scene at Katz’ Deli in the 1989 movie When Harry Met Sally, though I’m pop-culturally ignorant & haven’t seen it.) Anyway, Jewish Delis are a fantastically rich feature of many urban, Jewish communities in the U.S. One of my dear friends who moved away from NYC in the 70s still has his elderly mother mail him bagels and lox and other delicious things from the Upper West Side*—delis are a huge part of many people’s lives, and they were even more so in the interwar years, and during and after WWII. If you’re ever in NYC or a city with Jewish delis, I highly recommend it. Google for more info. The in-text wiki link is NOT sufficient.
*Click this link to see a map of the areas I talk about in this note, and the chapter itself. Anyway, from what we can surmise from (a) tiny little details in the film (e.g., Jacob’s bakery, which is in the Lower East Side—Rivington St., a few blocks over & down from both Katz’s and a corner that has hosted a synagogue for over a century—and making some guesses based off of producer choices to model Tina & Queenies apartment on the NYC Tenement Museum (also in the LES, as the LES was particularly well known for tenements and—coincidentally?— also a couple handful of blocks from Kowalski Baked Goods); in combination with NYC neighborhood history and immigration trends… I write Tina & Queenie having grown up in the Lower East Side, as opposed to Upper West Side or Brooklyn or even Chelsea, where they live during, at least, the first film. (Not to be confused with the very Jewish town of Chelsea, Massachusetts, though Chelsea, NYC has it own Jewish history that I’ve found difficult to research as a non-New Yorker, and on the internet. It appears to have been rather Sephardic-influenced, though?) Even besides all that, though—especially based on waves of Jewish immigration from different regions of the world to various parts of NYC—I don’t think it *quite* makes sense for them to have grown up in Chelsea, especially since I write their parents as second generation immigrants, e.g., Tina & Queenie’s grandparents were the ones to originally immigrate to the US, along with good ol’ Great Uncle Arnold, from the Hesse-Darmstadt region of Germany (and many middle-class Jews immigrated from Germany to the LES between the 1830s-1880s, before spreading out across NYC from there). Anyway, for the sake of “my” universe, I think it's more likely they moved away from the LES after their parents’ died or after Tina graduated Ilvermorney, depending on where one imagines Uncle Arnold to live. The West Side (where Chelsea is) is, however, much closer to Harlem, where Lally grew up, so if Arnold lived in Chelsea that’s two good motivations to move, apparition aside... (Not that any of it even matters, of course! ….I just think it’s fun.)
Another fun fact, that many of y’all already know: Dan Fogler’s great-grandfather Isaac Fogler ran Fogler’s Pumpernickel in the LES in the 1900s—up until his death in 1943, it seems, though it didn’t always go excellently (e.g., he applied for bankruptcy in 1918, according to the papers, but was released from his debts in 1919)—in the same area of the Lower East Side that Kowalski Goods is in the films, within site of the Williamsburg Bridge. (Which—for you non-USians—connects Manhattan to Brooklyn, where both Jacob Kowalski & Dan Fogler grew up, though Jacob is likely Polish & Fogler’s great-grandfather was an Austrian immigrant). Anyway, Fogler has said he feels like he was made for the part, and feels connected to his grandfather and family history through his role as Jacob in the film. Pretty cool, huh?
(….all of that was entirely unnecessary, I am so sorry. I’ve been using overly niche history binges to cope with life recently lmao.)
7. So it was brought to my attention how very specifically US and New York black-and-white cookies are. So I’ve linked to the Wiki article on them in the text.

About $139 billion flowed last year, through September, into ESG investment funds—that is, funds that invest according to various environmental, social, and governance criteria, like lower carbon emissions. It’s become a booming global business in recent years—and a controversial one, at least in the United States. Republican officials have accused ESG investment funds of “woke capitalism”—of unfairly hurting businesses in favor of an extraneous political agenda. Last week, Republicans in Congress voted to block a Labor Department rule that would allow retirement plan managers to incorporate ESG criteria into their investment decisions. Similar laws have been passed in Republican-controlled states across the country, to the consternation of liberals—and investors.
How did the concept of ESG investing get its start? If investors have to choose between profit and climate goals, won’t they ultimately always choose profit? And does the finance industry identify more with Republicans or Democrats? Those are a few of the questions that came up in my recent conversation with FP economics columnist Adam Tooze on the podcast we co-host, Ones and Tooze. What follows is an excerpt, edited for length and clarity.
For the full conversation, look for Ones and Tooze wherever you get your podcasts.
Cameron Abadi: How did the concept of ESG investing get its start? And why were so many financial actors seemingly so quick to endorse the idea?
Adam Tooze: Yeah, it’s a really big deal. I mean, globally right now we’re talking about an industry of asset management run according to ESG principles perhaps in the order of $18 trillion. And, at least until recently, the expectation was that this was going to grow very dramatically over time.
There’s been a kind of ethical, moral capitalism since the beginning of the system. Famously, somebody like Max Weber would say that capitalism actually grew out of a sort of theological inspiration. And in the 19th century, you could think of firms like Cadbury, the Quaker chocolate manufacturers who were big in anti-slavery activism. But I think the woke badge that’s been attached to ESG by the Republicans is quite telling in the sense that the modern ESG model is really a product of the 1970s, which I think is also historically where you would see wokeism as a form of politics. It’s a child of the ’70s in the sense that it’s post-traditional radicalism, it’s not socialist politics. It’s a kind of new alignment of civil rights-orientated, human rights-orientated, rights-based thinking with elite politics. And I think that’s what really drives the Republicans in the U.S. crazy.
But I think the genuine start in the modern form of campaigning activists is really the Sullivan principles over apartheid and investing in South Africa. These were initiated in 1977. And then you see big American pension funds like TIAA in ’78 issuing a statement on its business in South Africa and fully divesting by 1983. And the divestment movement of the 1980s, I think, is really the precursor of the modern ESG line. By the 1990s, there is really a sort of global corporate responsibility movement in full swing at the same time as there’s also, of course, the anti-globalization politics of the 1990s. And this sort of synthesizes, then, in the U.N. principles for responsible investing from 2006, which actually coins the ESG slogan. And it’s really from that moment onward that we have this badge, ESG, as a kind of common denominator for this kind of politics.
CA: How does that work in the case of, say, climate polluters. Do investors, through their mechanisms of acting as shareholders, really control the fate of carbon emissions? Do publicly traded companies even produce the majority of carbon emissions in the world?
AT: This is a key issue, and it also goes to the matter of history, because if you went back to the world economy as it was in the early 1990s, then for good reason, climate activism would have centered on the Exxons, the BPs, the Shells of this world. And they, of course, remain very significant polluters. But if you actually look at the more recent trends in the global economy since the end of the Cold War and the advent of the latest phase of globalization, the thing we have to wrap our heads around is that of the top 10 polluters worldwide in the fossil fuel business, only two are privately owned, widely traded Western oil majors, Exxon and Shell. The top eight are government-owned, government-linked energy companies, largely in the emerging market world. So at the very top is China’s coal industry, as a whole. Then next is Saudi Aramco. Then you’ve got Gazprom, then Iran’s national oil company, then you’ve got Coal India, then you have Pemex in Mexico, then you have Russia’s coal business and then China’s national petroleum company.
And those between them account for something like 33 percent of global emissions since the 1980s. Because you’re talking about the entire energy sector of two of the most rapidly growing economies in the world, which are gigantic—China and India are vastly huge. So this idea that by way of Western publicly traded capitalism, you can control the whole world economy is anachronistic. It’s no longer the case. There’s no way around politics, ultimately, because state-owned enterprises are key to this story now.
Even within the West, there is another sort of worry, which is that if ESG takes the form of divestment—so brand-aware, major publicly traded companies trying to get clean—it’s one thing if they shut activities down, which actually does result in a net reduction in pollution. But if what they do is actually divest themselves of the assets, sell them off, the question, of course, is who they sell them to. And often what they’ll do is sell them into non-publicly traded companies, basically private-equity firms of various types or privately owned energy companies that will then run these assets. And, of course, that doesn’t do anything for global pollution. And in terms of corporate governance, it may actually reduce the capacity of environmental politics to reach those assets, because those companies will be much less responsive to pressure. And if things go wrong, they also don’t have the deep pockets to pay large-scale compensation in the case of, say, offshore oil spills. If we have a major disaster, it’s clearly much better that it’s a BP that’s on the hook that can pay out billions in compensation, whereas a small, cheap-and-dirty private oil company might just go bankrupt and roll away from the losses.
CA: Is there a more fundamental mismatch here: If investors have to choose between profit and climate goals, won’t they choose profit? Isn’t there just a motivation problem here from the perspective of the investors?
AT: There certainly is. And you see that every time the fossil fuel market revives, all of a sudden the oil majors begin reconsidering their energy transition plans because there’s just so much money to be made in oil and gas. And they feel they have an obligation. And, you know, if you’ve got a player in the system like Exxon, for instance, which is doggedly defending its fossil fuel-based energy model, then it’s very difficult for its competitors under those kind of circumstances to stay on their ESG track.
There are two different ways of bridging this. The first is to claim that being green is actually profitable. In the end, there isn’t a trade-off. One of the early reports of the 2000s on ESG investing literally had the title “Who Cares, Wins,” as a riff on the SAS slogan, the British Special Forces slogan: “Who Dares, Wins.” And that’s part of the argument of the ESG lobby, the ESG campaign, is that actually to posit a stark contrast between profit and sustainability is a false contrast. In any case, that’s one way of answering this.
And the other is to face it head-on and to say, “Well, you know, who are investors? What are investors?” And generally speaking, what we’re talking about is pots of money, say, from pension funds or insurance firms, which are then passed on to fund managers. And so the investor, here, is the combination of the fund manager and the ultimate owners of the pension pot. And it’s perfectly legitimate for the pension fund, you know, the Californian teachers pension fund or whatever, to specify that our members do not want profit to go ahead of environmental sustainability. We do not want to retire on the basis of profits extracted from underpaid workers in Central America. And then you just pass that on as an instruction to the manager, and then there’s really no conflict.
CA: Republicans are obviously making this a political issue in the United States—but is finance as a whole already a polarized industry? Does it identify with one party in the United States more than another?
AT: I think it’s very complex, because finance is a diversified industry sprawling across the country, both small and large, with major centers, of course, in the coast and California and, above all, in New York, but all the way down the East Coast and taking lots of different shapes and sizes, from very small family-run financial advisory outfits to giant banks. I think at the level of corporate leadership, you see a kind of split consciousness in that they like tax cuts and deregulation, which is what the Republicans provide. But on the other hand, if you’re running a big, globally orientated business in the United States, you find yourself willy-nilly in the camp of the Democrats right now, so long as the Republicans are in kind of culture-war, Trumpist-clown-show mode, because you simply can’t align a big business with that kind of politics. And so there is a real tension there.
At the global level and at like Davos or at COP27 or whatever, the leaders of major corporations around the world want to appear as though they are on the right side of history. Meanwhile, if you go down into the rank and file of the giant American financial industry, of course, you’ll find loads of folks working on Wall Street who are solidly Republican-voting and are probably chuckling to themselves over the dilemmas that their corporate leadership find themselves in, while, like, swanning around at Davos and places like that trying to look good.
And I have to say, I have a sort of sneaking sympathy for this, because the ESG shtick is an interesting form of liberal politics that doesn’t really dare to speak its name. Right? What it does is to translate a set of what are, by any stretch of the imagination, political judgments on how you value community, the distribution of income, the priorities of ecological policy. It translates them into values that it then attempts, as it were, to place outside the sphere of political debates and then mandate as a sort of consensus of values. And in a sense, what the Republicans are doing is just calling their bluff and saying, “No, we see you coming.” This is basically the Democratic Party’s agenda cast as a value set, which we are supposed to subscribe to, and we just frankly don’t. So if you want to have this agenda, spell it out, be upfront, and pass legislation that requires it, for instance. But if you can’t win that argument, then don’t try to smuggle it in by way of corporate agenda-setting.

Aku adalah seorang Agnostic dalam Politik. ..

ISIS and the Palestinian issue
It has been more than a week since Israel wreaked havoc on Palestinians.
From China and Russia to Iran and many other non-Islamic countries, they condemned the cruelty and brutality of Israel. Even the United Nations, which was created by the United States and the Jews, condemned Israel's actions and genocide.
In Islamic countries, some have directly and others have indirectly asked for this war to stop.
Several countries, such as England, France, America, Germany, Japan, and a few others, supported this war.
The only party and group that considers itself more committed to Muslims and Islam, and claims the caliphate, is the ISIS group. They remain silent on the war in Palestine and have not shown any reaction, nor will they, because ISIS holds the belief that every Muslim who does not follow their way and thoughts is either not a true Muslim or merely a Muslim in name, even if they believe in Allah S.W.T.
Many people have these questions:
Why is ISIS not helping the Palestinians?
Why is ISIS not attacking Israel?
Why is ISIS only fighting with those who are involved in face-to-face engagement with America and Europe?
Why is ISIS killing Muslims?
Why is ISIS silent on the oppression and brutality of Israel, while they call themselves the claimants of the caliphate?
These and many other similar questions are what we hear every day, or young people ask each other on social media and at meetings.
We are attempting to answer these questions based on the perspectives of ISIS and other individuals.
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the slain leader of ISIS, once said, "We will turn Palestine into a cemetery for the Jews." However, it was not long before his speech was contradicted by the ISIS spokesman at the time, Nedhal Alnusairi, who stated, "The liberation of Palestine and the issue of Palestine are not among the priorities of the ISIS caliphate."
Nedhal Alnusairi spoke the truth because the issue of Palestine is not one of their priorities. However, it is one of the priorities of Daesh, who believe that hypocrites and apostates should be killed before infidels and Jews, according to them.
Because ISIS holds the belief that we must eliminate the hypocrites and apostates before we can target the infidels.
In the eyes of ISIS, every Muslim who does not pledge allegiance to the self-proclaimed caliph of ISIS is considered a hypocrite and an apostate.
The ISIS caliphate believes that there is no other Muslim but ISIS.
Once, the Israeli journalist Yorghan said, "If ISIS dominates the Middle East and takes over, it will turn its attention to Europe instead of Israel."
This journalist's words are strong and appropriate because this news becomes even stronger and more reliable after the speech of the former Minister of Israel, Moshe Ya'alon (Moses), who said, "Iran is more dangerous to us than Daesh, and if someone asks me who is better, I can clearly tell them that Daesh is better than Iran and is in our favor."
There have been many documents and incidents suggesting secret connections between ISIS and Israel. This news is further supported by the fact that Daesh has declared war on the entire world. However, there is no official news or statement regarding their war against Israel.
Former Jordanian Minister of State, Mamdouh al-Abadi said in an interview ten years ago, "Jews and terrorism are two sides of the same coin, and be sure that the terrorist group ISIS will never attack Israel."
According to Mamdouh al-Abadi, it has been a decade, but instead of reaching Israel, ISIS has wreaked havoc on Muslims in Iraq and Syria. Instead of going to Israel, which borders Syria, it has spread to faraway Africa and America.
France 24 TV published a report on August 23, 2017, in which the Minister of the Interior of Israel, Aryeh Deri, stated in a press conference that twenty Israeli citizens are affiliated with Daesh and are currently fighting in Syria and Iraq. The Israeli government is considering revoking the citizenship of these individuals.
The other news was that dozens of Jews from Russia had gone to Iraq and Syria to join ISIS and help them in the war.
If readers dare to search for news from 2014 and do a quick Google search, they will discover that dozens of wounded members of Daesh were taken to Israel for treatment. These individuals were treated for months in hospitals.
The Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, "They will fight with the Muslims, killing them, while leaving the infidels and idol worshippers alive."
Indeed, instead of fighting the Americans and their allies in Iraq and Syria, ISIS started attacking its own Muslims who were fighting against the Americans and their allies.
In this way, the oppressed Mujahideen, who were only fighting against the United States and its allies, became involved in two wars. This is how ISIS made the work of the Americans and Europeans easier.
In the same way, when the Taliban fought against America and NATO in Afghanistan, these false claimants of the caliphate instead of fighting against America and NATO, started their false jihad against the Taliban. They called them apostates, transgressors, and labeled them by different names.
There are numerous reasons and arguments that suggest ISIS is a project created by America and Israel, similar to Blackwater. However, the key distinction between Daesh and Blackwater lies in the religious affiliations of their members. Blackwater comprises Christians and Jews, while Daesh claims to be composed of Muslims.
ISIS is the same "Qaramtu" group of this current history and the last two centuries, whose sole purpose is to destroy Muslims and Islam, and to discredit the holy name of Islam and Jihad.

10:24 : Awal Yang Absurd [tl;dr]
Belum saatnya terbakar, jangan mati sebelum besar.

Kesadaran

#5: Bongkahan Investasi Abadi Ayah Ibu (Part I)
[ Wonogiri, 20 Agustus 2019 ]
Disuatu waktu, dititik terjenuh. Sejenak merenungi. Hei gadis cilik, apa yang sebenernya kau cari? Tempat seperti apa yang akan kau tuju? Apa disana kau temukan bahagiamu sesungguhnya?
Ya singkat cerita. Kalau kau kelak jadi mereka (orang tua), bagaimana perasaanmu?
Aku seketika pucat parah.
Muslim no. 1631)

Apa tujuan semua makhluk diciptakan?

FreeHand MX Editor's Review
FreeHand MX is used by design professionals, whether they’re creating content for web or print. Since it’s a fairly flexible piece of kit, it can handle everything from line art through to animation, and it has a selection of powerful tools to make your work easier. If you need to provide graphs then you’ll be pleased with the user friendly graph tool that will save you a lot of time and hassle. This software works on Windows and Mac, but Mac users should note that FreeHand MX won’t work with OS X 10.6 or higher, so maybe think about getting something like the new Adobe Illustrator instead. Pros: FreeHand MX has a wide range of enhanced features that will keep even professional graphic designers happy. The extrude tool will help you to create stunning images which appear to be 3D and there is an excellent perspective tool. Because you can fully rotate the 3D images, this is an excellent programme for technical drawers. Cons: This product isn’t being actively developed any more, and there haven’t been any updates to it for over four years, so it’s going to get outdated. If ultra-sleek graphics are what you need, then it’s probably worth upgrading to a newer programme. Conclusion: Although it’s no longer being developed, for the money, FreeHand MX still has plenty going for it, particularly in graphing and technical illustration.

Iraqi Protests: “Bad Government, Bad Roads, Bad Weather, Bad People”
By Patrick Cockburn, Counterpunch, July 20, 2018
“The people want an end to the parties,” chanted protesters, adapting a famous slogan of the Arab Spring, as they stormed the governor’s office and the international airport in the Shia holy city of Najaf.
Part of the wave of demonstrations sweeping across central and southern Iraq, they demanded jobs, electricity, water and an end to the mass theft of Iraq’s oil wealth by the political parties.
Beginning on 8 July, the protests are the biggest and most prolonged in a country where anti-government action has usually taken the form of armed insurgency.
The demonstrations are taking place in the heartlands of the Shia majority, reflecting their outrage at living on top of some of the world’s largest oilfields, but seeing their families barely survive in squalor and poverty.
The protests began in Basra, Iraq’s third largest city which is at the centre of 70 per cent of its oil production. A hand-written placard held up by one demonstrator neatly expresses popular frustration. It read:
“2,500,000 barrels daily Price of each barrel = $70 2,500,000 x $70 = zero !! Sorry Pythagoras, we are in Basra”
The protests quickly spread to eight other provinces, including Najaf, Kerbala, Nasariya and Amara.
In several places, the offices of the Dawa Party, to which the Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi belongs, were burned or attacked, along with those of parties whom people blame for looting oil revenues worth hundreds of billions of dollars in the 15 years since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein.
As the situation deteriorated, Mr Abadi flew to Basra on 13 July, promising to make $3bn available to improve services and provide more jobs. After he left, his hotel was invaded by protesters.
The credibility of almost all Iraqi politicians is at a low ebb, the acute feeling of disillusionment illustrated by the low 44.5 per cent turnout in the parliamentary election on 12 May that produced no outright winner.
The poll was unexpectedly topped by the Sairoun movement of the populist nationalist cleric, Muqtada al-Sadr, who has encouraged his followers to start protests against government corruption and lack of services since 2015.
The Sadrists, who emphasised their socially and economically progressive programme by allying themselves with the Iraqi Communist Party in the election, are playing a role in the current protests.
The demonstrations are also backed by the prestigious Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani. At ground level, political activists and tribal leaders have set up a joint committee called “the Coordination Board for Peaceful Protests and Demonstrations in Basra”, its purpose being to produce a list of demands, unite the protest movement, and keep their actions non-violent.
“The ends don’t justify the means,” says the committee in a statement. “Let us, being oppressed, not lead to the oppression of others.”
A list of 17 demands is headed by one asking for a government timetable for supplying water and electricity, both of which are short at a time of year when the temperature sometime exceeds 50C, making it one of the hottest places on earth.
Local people claim that the last time that the port city of Basra, once called the Venice of the Gulf, had an adequate supply of drinking water was in 1982. Iran had been supplying some extra electricity, but has cut this back because of its own needs and failure of Iraq to pay on time.
The second demand of the protesters is for jobs. Lack of jobs is a source of continuing complaint all over Iraq. Much of its oil income already goes on paying 4.5 million state employees, but between 400,000 and 420,000 young people enter the workforce every year with little prospects of employment.
Anger towards the entire political class is intense because it is seen as a kleptocratic group which syphoned off money in return for contracts that existed only on paper and produced no new power plants, bridges or roads.
Political parties are at the centre of this corruption because they choose ministries, according to their share of the vote in elections or their sectarian affiliation, which they then treat as cash cows and sources of patronage and contracts.
Plundering like this and handing out of jobs to unqualified people means that many government institutions have become incapable of performing any useful function.
Radical reform is difficult because the whole system is saturated by corruption and incompetence. Technocrats without party backing who are parachuted into ministries become isolated and ineffective.
The defeat of Isis in 2017 with the recapture of Mosul means that Iraqis are no longer absorbed in keeping their families safe so they have they have more time to consider “corruption”--a word they use not just to mean bribery but the parasitic nature of the government system as a whole.
There is a general mood of cynicism and dissatisfaction with the way things are run.
“Bad government, bad roads, bad weather, bad people,” exclaimed one Iraqi friend driving on an ill-maintained road.
Corrupt motives are ascribed to everything that happens: a series of unexplained fires in Baghdad in June were being ascribed to government employees stealing from state depots and then concealing their crime by setting fire to the building and destroying it.
Given that the Iraqi security forces are primarily recruited from the areas in which the protests are taking place, the government will need to be careful about the degree of repression it can use safely.
The armed forces have been placed on high alert. Three regiments of the elite Counter-Terrorism Service, which led the attack on Mosul and is highly regarded and well disciplined, has been ordered south to cope with protests and away from places where there is still residual activity by Isis.
Iraq’s corrupt and dysfunctional governing system may be too set in its profitable ways to be reformed, but, if the ruling elite wants to survive, it must give ordinary Iraqis a larger share of the oil revenue cake.
