The Essential Features to Look For

As you investigate different programs, here are key features that you want to look for:

Beat matching. The ideal program has an auto beat matching feature. The better programs should also have an automix feature. That feature takes a list of songs or a series of tracks and remixes them for optimum performance.

Pitch controls. You definitely want to be able to have control over speed and pitch. The best programs can change speed but keep the same pitch.

Effects. Echoes, rewinds, delays, loops are essential. A program with FX effects is ideal. Also, you want to be able to see what’s happening with the music.

Serato’s story began in 1999 when Steve West created Pitch ‘n Time. He needed a way to slow down bass solos without changing the pitch so that he could teach himself how to play them.

The company developed Noisemap, which let DJs control audio playback with records in 2000, followed by Scratch Studio Edition, one of the first programs to let DJs scratch digital samples and sound files with record players.

When you start with the Serato DJ Lite, you will be able to use two modes: practice and performance. In the practice mode, you will be able to:

Practice playing two songs together without hardware.

Set cue points on your tracks.

Get seamless mixes with sync and pitch slider, also without hardware.

Mixvibes—Perfect for Starting Out

If you’re just starting and want to get comfortable with DJ software, then Mixvibes is for you. Should you hear someone mention Cross or Cross DJ, they are talking about the same product. Mixvibes released the first version of Cross/Cross DJ in 2008 and has updated it several times.

Consider starting with the Cross DJ free version to get started. The features are straightforward and easy to use:

Beat detection. Cross DJ automatically determines the Beats Per Minute (BPM), so it can sync them for you. If you want to make adjustments, you can, but the automatic detection is just one of the features that make this an ideal program for beginners.

Key detection. Matching keys is another skill that is difficult to learn. Cross DJ’s tells you what songs would be suitable matches.

Mixxx—the Best Free DJ Software

If you are looking for high-quality software, Mixxx is high on our list of recommendations. It has a lot of pro features at a price that is unbeatable—free.

Since the download is free, you do not have to deal with the limitations of a demo version. You also will not have to give your credit card information, worry about whether the program is legal, or keep getting messages asking if you want to upgrade.

Mixxx is open source software, meaning anyone can access the code and modify it. The Mixxx development team has been working together since 2001, meaning they have had two decades to improve the product.

You will be able to do the following in Mixxx:

Control pitch and key. Not only can you change the pitch of your song without changing the tempo, but you will also be able to change the tempo and keep the pitch. If you do manual beat-making, this is a great feature.

Biggest negative: As it’s open-source software, it does not have the help and support that you would expect from a company that controls its software. Tweaks that programmers make could cause bugs and instability. If this happens when you are performing, this could cause a problem.

Bottom line: If you are willing to put the time into learning the system and feel comfortable with your ability to adjust as needed, Mixxx will not cost you anything but your time.

Traktor DJ2 and Pro 3—Equal to Serato

Imagine connecting your iPad to a Bluetooth speaker and doing your DJ bit, or hooking your iPad to a controller and out to speakers. Those are just two set-ups you can do if you are using Traktor software.

Native Instruments, which sells Traktor DJ2, began selling DJ software around the same time as Serato. Whereas Serato started out focused on software, Native Instruments started out with a focus on electronic music and software instruments. Its software, therefore, leans toward the production and creation of music.

That does not mean Traktor is not a good software option for DJs. If what you want to do is straightforward DJing, then Traktor DJ2 is for you. However, if you want a robust program that offers a full range of DJ tools, then you should head to the Traktor Pro 3.

The learning curve with Traktor Pro 3 is steep compared to some other products we’ve mentioned. For starters, when you go to the website, you are faced with an overwhelming number of choices. You need to scroll halfway down to find the Traktor products. Compare that to the simplicity of the Serato website.

As you read over some of the key features, you will see how Traktor has a stronger focus on creating music:

Multiple layouts. Although having multiple layouts is a great feature, it is also a choice that you don’t have to make with some other software.

Sound shaping. Traktor DJ lets you adjust the EQ and add filters to each channel. Once you can take the bass of a track and then blend in only vocals, you are beginning the process of turning one song into another.

Freeze Mode. This allows you to slice off one-beat segments from a track, and then use them to create new sounds. Traktor DJ says you can play them “like an instrument.”

Biggest negative:Traktor DJ2 has a limited number of effects (four) and only two decks. If you want to have more effects, beat and tempo syncing, and MIDI mapping, then the DJ2 is too limiting for you.

Bottom line: If you see yourself as a DJ/musician and want to learn how to master software designed for that, you will love Traktor Pro 3. The DJ2 program is an excellent free choice if you want to be able to DJ from your iPad or laptop.

Virtual DJ and Virtual DJ Pro—an Excellent Beginner’s Software

Another company that has been around for close to 20 years is Atomix, maker of Virtual DJ. Atomix claims that Virtual DJ is the #1 DJ software based on how many times Virtual DJ has been downloaded. We can see why—their website proclaims Virtual DJ “lets you start mixing as a DJ right away.”

It’s easy to see why a beginner would download Virtual DJ.

What the company does not distinguish in its claim is how often someone who downloaded Virtual DJ went on to buy Virtual DJ Pro. That could be because the Virtual DJ that people download for free is limited to what you can do with a trackpad and keyboard. As soon as you try to add a controller, you will have no choice but to pay for Virtual DJ Pro.

Here are some of the features you will get if you use Virtual DJ:

DJ mixer. The mixer comes with everything you would expect—smart sync, looping, hot cues, waveforms, equalizer, and filter, and more.

Video mixing. This is one area where DJ Mixer Pro excels. Virtual DJ Pro works with leading video formats in both full-HD and 4K. Transitions, text-to-screen, song titler, screen grabbing, overlays are all available.

Visualizations and video graphics. You will be able to display graphics that sync with your music. There are thousands of visualizations available. You can also display skins that emulate your screen to engage your audience.

Karaoke features. You will be able to use karaoke formats to use on-screen lyrics display, add the singer’s name, background graphics between singers, and more.

Broadcasting. Integrate your podcasts with iTunes, broadcast video to social media sites such as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitch. Build your own web radio station or broadcast to web stations.

Biggest negative: For many people, the biggest drawback is the price. Yes, upgrades come with the price, and there is no need to purchase expansion packs, but the current price of nearly $300 or around $20 a month subscription fee is double that of the Serato DJ Pro basic subscription fee, which is currently about $10. Even the full suite of Serato features is still $5 less than Virtual DJ Pro.

Bottom line: Although Virtual DJ Pro has many features you would expect in software, it excels in streaming and the use of video editing. If you are a professional DJ who needs that functionality, then the price might be worth it.

Ableton Live—Software for the Creative DJ

We mentioned Skrillex earlier as a Serato user. However, he is also mentioned here because of Ableton Live. Armin van Buuren and David Guetta are two other DJs who use Ableton Live. So what is Ableton Live?

First, it isn’t strictly DJ software, but it is used by a lot of DJs. They use it because it is a DAW tool.

What Is DAW?

So what is a DAW tool? DAW stands for Digital Audio Workstation. Originally, this referred to workstations used in music and audio production to combine music from various sources, such as keyboards, computers, and other sources, into a completed recording.

Today DAW also refers to software that does the same thing, except on a single computer. If you have ever used Audacity, then you have used a simple DAW. It is free, open-source software that is often used in educational settings.

Why Use a DAW Tool Like Ableton?

These are the reasons that you might want to use Ableton Live:

You want to create original tracks or edit or remix tracks made by others.

You are sick of beatmatching (or aren’t particularly good at it).

You want to use older tracks where tempos or pitch are wobbly.

You like learning to use complicated software.

Since Ableton Lite is not typical DJ software, there might be reasons not to use it:

You want something easy to use and want to start mixing once you have downloaded it.

You are an experienced DJ who likes beatmatching.

You are happy with what you can do and don’t want to learn something new that you might never use, such as more than two decks.

Biggest weakness: Because it is a DAW, Ableton will require you to rethink how you DJ. This is not software for beginners. Also, the beginner’s pack is around $100, and the standard is over $400.

Bottom line: If you want to branch out and become a more versatile DJ and see yourself not just mixing beats but making your own, then a DAW like Ableton Lite is something you should check out. Try it out for free for 90 days.

Apple Logic Pro X—DAW Software Made for Mac

Some live DJs prefer to use DAW software made specifically for Apple, such as Logic Pro X. It will integrate with other Apple products, so if you want to use your iPhone or iPad to control the program on your Mac, you can.

Other features of Apple Logic Pro X you might like include:

Drag and drop hot zones for easier editing in the Sampler plug-in.

Slice mode to take a sample and break it apart and create your own sequences.

Plug-ins for a drum synthesizer, or design your drum machine.

Use flex time and flex pitch to easily adjust the timing and pitch of your recordings.

Create alternate tracks and then be able to compare them for increased experimentation.

Biggest weakness: See the Ableton review. Everything we said about Ableton’s weakness is true here also.

Bottom line: If you plan to stay with Macs, then Apple Logic is an excellent DAW that integrates with other Apple products, such as iPad and iPhone. Again, as with any DAW, Apple is for DJs who want to branch out into producing or creating their own music.

Dex 3—Easy-to-Use Software for Mac Users

Dex, or PCDJ DEX, as it used to be called, is a program that should get more press for Mac users. With Dex 3, you get an easy-to-use software that doesn’t require the learning curve of other, more robust products. The iPad DJ app has some cool features:

iTunes sync. The iPad DJ version automatically syncs with your library. Use mixes you have created, make new ones, or use automix to let the program do the work for you.

Hands-on. Or should we say fingers-on? Use your fingers for scratching or back spinning if you use the platter tab. The cues tab will let your fingers do the drumming. Other tabs let you create effects, change your waveforms, and create loops.

Controller support. Pioneer, Denon, Numark, and Reloop are some of the DJ controllers that support Dex 3.

Biggest weakness: Dex 3 does not have the advanced feature of a program like Serato or Traktor.

Bottom line: If you plan to DJ Karaoke parties, then Dex 3 is worth a look. The Party Tyme Karaoke Subscription service currently has over 16,000 songs. Your monthly subscription fee is for commercial purposes. The price is currently $99 a month, so it is obviously for professional DJs. CuteDJ Pro—Beginner Software With Video Editing Features

This is another easy-to-use software that is fun and not overwhelming. You will be able to mix audio, cue, slice, look, scratch, and mash your mixes. CuteDJ Pro also gives you the ability to mix videos.

You can also do the following:

iTunes integration. Just like Dex 3, you can instantly access your iTunes music and playlists.

Automix. Your playlists can be mixed automatically.

Harmonic match.CuteDJ Pro automatically detects the key of a song and can match it to others in the same key or same tempo.

Record your mix. MP3, WAV, or AIFF files are supported.

MIDI and controller supports. CuteDJ Pro works with close to 100 controllers.

Biggest weakness: The limited features. CuteDJ wants to market itself as a professional DJ software, but the features are not robust enough for a professional DJ, outside of Karaoke.

Bottom line: If you are a beginner and want to have an easy-to-use software where you can practice editing video and audio, sign up for a free 30-day trial and see if you like it.

Pioneer DJ Rekordbox

If you buy Pioneer controllers, then you will have the option to use Rekordbox. We have nothing bad to say about Rekordbox because it looks and feels a lot like Serato, Traktor, and Virtual DJ. If you plan to use only Pioneer hardware, then Rekordbox is a good option. But if you do not want to be limited by one manufacturer, you should consider going with other software.

PC Only Software

Some software will claim to be both for PC and Macs, but don’t be fooled and download something that will not work on your Mac. Avoid these products:

SSH and SFTP MAC Instructions - FUGU

General Information:All projects for this class will be uploaded to the class server using a secure ftp (SFTP) program. These instructions will step you through a process to install the necessary software on your computer: (NOTE: These screen captures may vary as the SSH download sites change, but the general information is still valid.)

Step 1: We will skip this step. When you must first login to the server with client software and change your default password before you can login again with the SFTP file transfer software you will use to upload and download files to the server. When the password must be changed, first use the application Terminal that you will find in the Utilities folder in Applications on your Hard drive to login and change your password. BACK

Step 2: Then download and install the secure ftp (SFTP) file transfer program and login again.

For MAC OS X + we will be using FUGU, file transfer program that is a free download.

If you are using another Mac OS you will need to use MACSFTP, that costs $25.

Step 1: Open TerminalOpen Terminal from the Utilities folder in your Applications

You will see a Login screen with some code.

After the % sign, type ssh -l yourusername web-students.pstcc.edu, then enter. Your username could be something like wwww2200r5012 or the same as your email, and will be followed by the server name.

The server will prompt you for your password. Type your password, then enter. Your password will be the same as your username for your first login.

The server will prompt you to change your password. The new password you create must contain a number and two alphabetic characters in the first six characters, as in for1example.

You must enter your password again to verify, then enter.

The server will confirm your password is successfully changed.

The server should reset. If not, log out by typing exit, then enter.

You have completed step 1. Close the Terminal application. Proceed to step #2.

Step 2: Download FUGU and login to your web accountDownload FUGU from http://rsug.itd.umich.edu/software/fugu/ and Login to your Web Server directory. You will use FUGU to login to the server for file transfers in MAC OS X. You will not need to repeat the Terminal process above.

Go to: http://rsug.itd.umich.edu/software/fugu/download.html.

In the column on the left under the word English select the top file to download if the operating system you are using on your Mac is OS X.

Click Save and install to your Applications. Accept the license agreement to install.

Click on the Fugu icon in Applications to launch the Fugu client.

In the Connect to text box type web-students.pstcc.edu and type your username in the Username field. Enter your email username and password or the username and password assigned by the instructor. We connect via Port 22 on the web-students server, and leave the Directory field blank.

Click the Connect button at the bottom right of the screen.

In the text field below the prompt for your password, type your new password.

Click Authenticate.

Your server directory will open in the window on the right, and your local computer directory will show in the window to the left.

Find your course directory.

You may need to drill down to find your personal directory.

All files that you upload MUST go inside this main directory where you will upload your index.htlm file, or they will not be visible on the web. You may then need to create other folders in your directory for images or script.

Use the Make Folder tool in the Menu Bar as shown in the picture above. Name the new folder (images, for example - DO NOT CREATE A PUBLIC_HTML FOLDER on the web-students server).

To transfer files to the server, click and drag files from your local directory to the server window on the right.

Although many servers also require that you create a public_html folder to contain all your files including the index file, WE WILL NOT USE A PUBLIC_HTML FOLDER on the web-students.pstcc.edu class server.

Double-click a directory to view the files transferred into the folder. Students creating websites need to put your index.html file inside your directory.

Don't forget to log off and leave your connection open. Click the Disconnect icon to log off the server.

NORMAL UPLOAD OF FILES: Now that you have FUGU installed to upload files you will start with Step #4 above. Enter the server info, username and password. Click Connect. Then open your folder and upload your files into it.

TO VIEW YOUR FILES ON THE INTERNET: You would use a similar URL to this http://web-students.pstcc.edu/web2210ww1/s_studentusername/filename.html or to this http://web-students.pstcc.edu/web2812r50/www2812r5009/filename.html . This student (www2812r5009) would use this last URL. You will need to make the URL match your actual username. (Note: many servers require all files to be inside a public_html folder that you create inside your main directory, but WE WILL NOT BE USING A PUBLIC_HTML FOLDER on the web-students class server).

IMPORTANT: If you run into trouble while following these steps email me and include your username, password, what step # you were on and what kind of trouble you are having. This will help me help you! :)

Fugu is a graphical frontend for the text-based Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) client that shipswith Mac OS X. Fugu provides a friendly, intuitive interface for OpenSSH'sSFTP client, featuring secure drag-and-drop file transfers, remote file editing and remote file preview.Fugu allows you to take advantage of SFTP's strong encryption without having to sacrifice ease ofuse. Additionally, Fugu can make secure file transfers using Secure Copy (SCP), and can createSSH tunnels to faciliate secure interaction between machines.

How to connect to an SFTP server

Launch Fugu. In the Connect to field, enter the name of the SFTP server. Enter the user name youhave on the server in the Username field. The Port field and Directory field are optional. If you knowthat the SFTP server is running on a non-standard port, you would enter the server's port number inthe Port field. If you want to go to a directory other than the default (usually your home directory),enter the path in the Directory field. When you've filled out all the information, you may optionally add this information to your list of Favorites, by click the Add to Favorites button. After you've added a server to your Favorites list, youcan select it from the pop-up button located at the bottom left-hand corner of the connection pane.Editing Favorites is done in Fugu's preference panel. When you're ready to connect, click the Connect button. If Fugu needs your password, it will ask for it.

Uploading files and folders

Drag the items you want to upload from the Local (left-hand) pane and drop them on the Remote(right-hand) pane.

Downloading files

Downloading files is just like uploading them. Drag the files you want to download from the Remotepane and drop them on the Local pane. Version 1.2.0 adds the ability to download files from theremote pane by dragging them to the Desktop or any open Finder window.

Downloading folders

The sftp client that Fugu wraps does not support folder downloads. To get around this limitation,Fugu uses SCP to download folders. When you try to download a folder, Fugu will offer to downloadfor you with SCP. If you choose Download with SCP, Fugu brings forward the SCP window for thetransfer (see the SCP section below for more).

Navigating

Double-click folders to show their contents. To move up a level, click the up arrow button locatednext to the pop-up button listing your current location. To move to a folder in the path of your currentlocation, click the pop-up button, and select the desired folder from the list. Fugu also has folder histories for the Local and Remote panes, storing the last 20 places you'vebeen. You can click the History buttons in the toolbar, and select the location to which you'd like togo. You can use the arrow keys to navigate, as well. The right arrow key enters the selected directory.The left arrow key causes Fugu to move the current directory's parent.

Deleting files and folders

To delete an item, select it, and hit the delete key on your keyboard; or select the item, and click theDelete button in the toolbar. You will be prompted to confirm that you want to remove the item.The sftp client Fugu wraps does not know how to delete folders recursively. This means that it willgive you an error if you try to remove a folder that is not empty. Delete the items in the folder first, thendelete the folder.

Renaming files and folders

To rename an item, select the item, and hit the Enter key on your keyboard; or right- or control-clickon the item, and select Rename from the contextual menu. Fugu will select the name of the item andmake it editable. When you've completed renaming the item, hit Return on your keyboard. To cancel a rename, clickon another item.

Showing file or folder information

To see all the attributes of an item, whether on your computer or on the SFTP server, select the itemand choose Get Info from the SFTP menu. In the info panel, you can modify file and folderpermissions, set owner and group, and see other information pertaining to the selected item.

Using SCP with Fugu

Connecting to use SCP is just like connecting with Fugu to use SFTP, except that you will be askedto specify the path to the item you want to transfer. Select New Secure Copy from the SCP menu. In the SCP window, enter the name of the server. you'll be connecting to in the Remote Host field. In the User Name field, enter the user name youhave on the server. If copying from your computer to the server, click the Choose.. button and selectthe item to copy. If the remote is stored on the server, you'll need to enter the path to it in the Item toCopy field. You may also optionally enter the location you want the item transferred to in the CopyFile to Path field. To indicate whether you'll be uploading or downloading the item, choose either Upload Item toRemote Host or Download Item from Remote Host from Copy Type field.When you're ready to begin copying, click the Secure Copy button, and enter your password whenprompted.

Creating an SSH Tunnel with Fugu

What you need - To create an SSH tunnel, you need an account on a machine running SSH, which will act as thetunnel host for you. If you don't have access to such a machine, you can use your Mac as the tunnelhost. If this is the case, you'll

Creating the tunnel - From the SSH menu, select New SSH Tunnel. In the Remote Host field, enter the name of the serveryou want to connect to via the SSH tunnel. In the Remote Port field, enter the number of the port onwhich the service you want to use is running. If the server you're connecting to is running FTP, theport number is generally 21. In the Local Port field, enter a number greater than 1024; it doesn'treally matter which.In the Tunnel Host field, enter the name of the computer on which you've got a valid SSH account.Enter the user name you have on that server in the Username field. The Port field is optional.When you've filled out all the information, click the Start Tunnel button. When you've authenticated, asmall window will be put in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, containing a pop-up button inwhich the tunnel information is listed.

Using the tunnel - Once your SSH tunnel is established, you can connect through it to the server you entered in theRemote Host field. To make this connection, you do not connect to the Remote Host, but to yourown computer, or 'localhost.' Say, for example, you're tunnelling to an FTP server. After establishingyour SSH tunnel, open an FTP client, and in the Server field or its equivalent, enter 'localhost'. In thePort field, enter the number you put in the Local Port field of Fugu's SSH Tunnel window. In thePassword field, enter the password you use for the FTP server, and connect. Your connection is redirectedsecurely through your tunnel host to the FTP server.If you're tunnelling to an FTP storage server, as in this example, you will need to make sure that you havePassive mode enabled in your FTP client.

Closing the tunnel - When you're done with the tunnel, simple click the Close Tunnel button. You will be prompted toconfirm the closure. Click Close Tunnel.

Frequently-Asked Questions

Q: Why doesn't Fugu tell me how much of a file it has downloaded or uploaded? A: Some versions of OpenSSH's sftp client don't provide the sort of feedback that would be necessaryfor such information. Once it does, Fugu will provide you those sorts of updates. In the meantime,Fugu lets you know that files are being downloaded or uploaded, and updates the GUI when eitheroperation is complete. You may also check Fugu's Console for information or errors.OpenSSH release 3.6.1p1 does provide transfer progress feedback. Fugu 1.1 and subsequentreleases support transfer progress display if the version of OpenSSH installed on the computer is3.6.1p1 or newer.

Q: Why can't I download folders with SFTP? A: Fugu only wraps OpenSSH's command line sftp client. That client is incapable of uploading ordownloading directories. Fugu does add the ability to upload folders, but does not yet supportdirectory download or recursive remote directory deletion. Although SFTP still lacks the ability todownload directories, Fugu will prompt you when you try to download a directory, asking if you'd liketo download it with SCP instead. It's not a perfect solution, but it does provide a workaround in themeantime.

Q: When I connect I get an error that says 'server.host.edu: connection refused.' Why? A: The server isn't listenting for SSH connections on the standard port. It may not be running the SSHservice at all. Contact the system administrator for help.

Q: After I authenticate Fugu tells me 'Request for subsystem sftp failed.' What does that mean? A: The server isn't configured to be used as an SFTP server. Q: Fugu was working fine, but now when I try to upload files Fugu says 'Couldn't get handle:failure.' Wha..? A: One of the most helpful errors from OpenSSH's sftp, this message typically means that there isn'tenough space on the server's disk for more data. This could be because you've hit your quota limit,or that the disk itself is full. Contact the server administrator for help.
