Androcles

Androcles (Greek: Ἀνδροκλῆς, alternatively spelled Androclus in Latin), is the main character of a common folktale about a man befriending a lion.

Androcles and the Lion

The tale is included in the Aarne–Thompson classification system as type 156. The story reappeared in the Middle Ages as "The Shepherd and the Lion" and was then ascribed to Aesop's Fables. It is numbered 563 in the Perry Index and can be compared to Aesop's The Lion and the Mouse in both its general trend and in its moral of the reciprocal nature of mercy.

Classical tale

The earliest surviving account of the episode is found in Aulus Gellius's 2nd century Attic Nights. The author relates there a story told by Apion in his lost work Aegyptiacorum (Wonders of Egypt), the events of which Apion claimed to have personally witnessed in Rome. In this version, Androclus (going by the Latin variation of the name) is a runaway slave of a former Roman consul administering a part of Africa. He takes shelter in a cave, which turns out to be the den of a wounded lion, from whose paw he removes a large thorn. In gratitude, the lion becomes tame towards him and henceforward shares his catch with the slave.

After three years, Androclus craves a return to civilization but is soon imprisoned as a fugitive slave and sent to Rome. There he is condemned to be devoured by wild animals in the Circus Maximus in the presence of an emperor who is named in the account as Gaius Caesar, presumably Caligula. The most imposing of the beasts turns out to be the same lion, which again displays its affection toward Androclus. After questioning him, the emperor pardons the slave in recognition of this testimony to the power of friendship, and he is left in possession of the lion. Apion, who claimed to have been a spectator on this occasion, is then quoted as relating:

Afterwards we used to see Androclus with the lion attached to a slender leash, making the rounds of the tabernae throughout the city; Androclus was given money, the lion was sprinkled with flowers, and everyone who met them anywhere exclaimed, "This is the lion, a man's friend; this is the man, a lion's doctor".

Later versions of the story, sometimes attributed to Aesop, began to appear from the mid-sixth century under the title "The Shepherd and the Lion". In Chrétien de Troyes' 12th-century romance, "Yvain, the Knight of the Lion", the knightly main character helps a lion that is attacked by a serpent. The lion then becomes his companion and helps him during his adventures. A century later, the story of taking a thorn from a lion's paw was related as an act of Saint Jerome in the Golden Legend of Jacobus de Voragine (c. 1260).[8] Afterwards the lion joins him in the monastery and a different set of stories follows.

The later retelling, "Of the Remembrance of Benefits", in the Gesta Romanorum (Deeds of the Romans) of about 1330 in England, has a mediaeval setting and again makes the protagonist a knight. In the earliest English printed collection of Aesop's Fables by William Caxton, the tale appears as The lyon & the pastour or herdman and reverts to the story of a shepherd who cares for the wounded lion. He is later convicted of a crime and taken to Rome to be thrown to the wild beasts, only to be recognised and defended from the other animals by the one that he tended.

A Latin poem by Vincent Bourne dating from 1716–17 is based on the account of Aulus Gellius. Titled Mutua Benevolentia primaria lex naturae est, it was translated by William Cowper as “Reciprocal kindness: the primary law of nature”.

Aarne Edward Juutilainen (1904-1976) was Finnish army officer who served in the French Foreign Legion in Morocco between 1930 and 1935. After returning to Finland he served in the Finnish army and fought in the Winter, Continuation and Lapland War.

Juutilainen  wounded three times in the wars. During Winter War he lost one finger of his right hand as a result of shrapnel (shown in the picture).

His brother was the top scoring Fighter Ace and two-time Knight of the Mannerheim Cross, Ilmari Juutilainen.

A Little About Me

Name: Aarne or Mikki, either is fine. (They/Them)

I wear a lot of hats. I am a conservation biologist, science educator, master herpetologist, botanist, agriculture specialist, and general science geek.

I’m a trans/genderqueer professional

I’m obsessive about frogs and toads, house plants, gardening, as well as the history of the relationship between humans and animals and humans and the natural world.

My dream is to start a non-profit somehow that mixes my passion for science education, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates with my love of rock and metal music.

I have a few pets and a TON of house and garden plants, and work with a lot of animals in both captivity and the wild. You’ll see pictures of them.

Aside from science, I adore rock and metal music, going to concerts, painting, journaling, hiking, travel, fashion, and a bunch of other things. 

Feel free to send asks, the box is open. I am happy to try and help with animal and plant identification. However, I am in North America and I am most familiar with the flora and fauna of North America. That being said, I will be happy to take a gander at things from other places too.

Where is the Happiness? Even though most spend their whole life chasing some form of happiness that got programmed into them and became a belief, they never seem to understand what happiness is. They believe in a happiness that is not apart of them. Something out there that if obtained would bring them the happiness they seek. Unfortunately it will never happen. That isn’t happiness. It is easier to believe that we can just go grab it off a shelf or find it somewhere else because we are not presently happy. But it’s true. It does lie within us. When we can think anabolic and positive thoughts we actually create anabolic and positive emotions that make us feel that way. We are the creators of our own Happiness. We just don’t practice it enough. Always focused on something out there that we believe will make us happy. Stop chasing the Happiness that you seek out there. Find peace and stillness to be able to focus on the thoughts that will produce the emotions you want to feel. You have this powerful ability. You just have to practice it like anything else to become good at it. But if you never practice it, you will never obtain any consistency to be truly happy. Find your peace. Create your happiness. Become fulfilled. You are that powerful. ive never had any guinea pigs but i think youve put it well im just a guinea pig enthusiast..

our family has had a few bunnies and other rodents in the past but i dont think i could handle having a pig of my own especially not in an apartment like this one but if i had one i would have a one thats brown with long hair. picture related

My absolute favorite, which I could not find in the ATU index, is a substory from Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins wherein Hershel offers pickles to a demon and the demon gets stuck and Hershel is like "I will tell you the secret if you let me light the hanukkiyah" and the demon is like "FINE WHATEVER YOU WANT" and Hershel is like "dude just take one pickle; you're stuck because you tried to take? all of them? what is that even" 2. do you have synaesthesia? I do not! 3. have you ever seen  a ghost? you yourself, not someone you knew. Never seen a ghost but when I was five my babysitter tried to show me magic that I was unable to replicate later for my parents, and we were threatened by a GI Joe action figure once so that was kind of a ghost but I feel like my mental stats were too low as a kid to become a plasticmancer and my greatest regret in life is not asking her, when she visited my mom 15 years later, if all the things I remembered actually happened because what if?? &&. announcing her royal highness, ( inari tyyne talvitie ), the ( 21 ) year old ( “princess” ) of ( finland ). she is often confused with ( samantha logan ). some say that she is ( naive & timid ), but she is actually ( kind & patient ).

it’s time for the third iteration of inari. more innocent than the second one but more serious than the first one. 

so she’s the little sister of anneli & aarne

she’s quite carefree, often forgets to think about the bigger picture. does things on a whim. it’s not malicious selfishness but, like... dumb selfishness

she’s pretty down to earth !  the finnish royal fam is all about humility and being close to their subjects so she wants to seem approachable too

though she is not cut for politics and only does the little she has to

it’s not that she doesn’t care?? she just can’t understand the cause and effect side of politics

she was not on board with the whole karelia thing, in her humble opinion it was too messy, the basis of it is outdated and honestly too many of her friends ( those smarty pants, low key nonathletic friends ) had to go fight in a war that just…wasn’t worth it.

but this bitch is keeping her mouth shut bc anneli would disown her lmao and she avoids conflicts

and history’s not her thing, she’s into physics

let’s just say she likes problem solving

and when i say into, i mean she fkn loves physics

like her siblings she went to a public high school ( though not the same cause she didn’t want to be overshadowed lol ).  the twins went to one prestigious upper secondary school and inari to another. there are no private schools in finland so the whole “people’s princess” thing was almost too easy to accomplis

before coming to phuket she was studying energy and environmental engineering, she had finished the first half of her studies.

she really loved uni life. it made her feel very normal and she loved how her days were filled with activities. she had no time to think about the political situation because there was a soiree or a party or an exam coming up and she had to prepare for it.

as university students do... most of the people around inari did get very political after the annexation ( and tbf before that but before that the criticism was directed at the royal family, which made things #awkward on a daily basis )

has a soft heart but she’s kinda hesitant to make new friends tbh?? she has her really close friends whom she  trusts and that’s about it. she never liked having a huge entourage

but don’t get me wrong she likes befriending people, just, there’s a limit to everything

but she has a green thumb?? and likes nature a lot

forests are her thing and actually enjoys picking berries

last but not least i solemnly swear inari has never and never will get involved with a russian
