so maybe some of you remember the grand ol' charak royalty au fic i wrote in summer '23 called velvet torn.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/47352442/chapters/119318350
so. confession: i wanted to write an epilogue but i was really happy with how it ended and i didnt want to ruin anything I've already done, so i kept putting it off. and now i don't think I'll end up doing it. so for anybody who's curious, this is what was in my mind for what happened after they ran away.
-
charan wakes up to familiar hands covering his eyes. he startles a little, relaxes when he hears tarak's chuckle. he can tell by the chill in the air and the chirping of the birds that it's still early, that the sun hasn't fully come out yet. lazily, he reaches up to pry tarak's hands away, but his prince holds firm.
"it's vishu, bangaram," tarak murmurs into his ear. "don't open your eyes yet."
vishu. of course. he finally remembers why tarak is adamant that he keep his eyes closed—today, the first thing he sees, the kani, supposedly determines his luck for the coming year. he lets tarak help him up and lead him to where they set up the vishu kani the previous night—the bronze vessel filled with gourds, a jackfruit, bananas and bunches of yellow konna flowers. behind that, propped up against the wall, are pictures of several gods, krishna, shiva, hanuman, rama.
tarak uncovers his eyes but charan keeps them shut tight. "you really remembered to keep your eyes closed until you saw this?" his prince huffs, letting his head hit charan's shoulder, wrapping an arm around his waist from behind.
"fine, the first thing i saw was you."
that spreads a warmth through him. charan bites his lip to stop himself from smiling, quickly turns around in tarak's hold, palms still pressed together seeking blessing. opens his eyes. there's something sacred about this, he thinks, about seeing his husband's face first, before seeing his god's face. something about how devotion is love, and love is devotion.
tarak's face goes slack in surprise, then softens in amusement. "i can't believe you." charan leans in to press a quick kiss to his mouth, then swivels to face the kani again. he closes his eyes and prays.
the sounds of anklets. of drums. voices talking. a knock on the door. a call of "anna!"
they exchange a glance and break into smiles. outside, a gaggle of children—as well as their parental supervision—stand on their doorstep, clapping their hands and singing, presenting them with the kani. one of the boys is covered head to toe in blue dye, and he holds a flute to his lips. there's a peacock feather tied around his little head. tarak makes a huge show of bowing to lord krishna, while charan quietly gives a few coins to the little girl holding a jingling cloth pouch. the children all giggle at tarak's exaggerations. charan looks on fondly. he's so beloved by the youngsters in the village.
as the group bounces off to the next house, they hear a voice call, "hey, tarak! charan!"
both their heads snap up at the same time. both of them grin. "aadhi!"
...
so. yeah. i took them to kerala, because of course I wasn't just letting them go like that. the white and gold clothes they wore during the ceremony the day before the wedding was because those are kerala's colours.
so in my head, they're in palakkad or thereabouts, which is a beautiful place though the weather is a little fucked these days
they're living there incognito, doing their part in farming like the others in the village do
aadhi is probably their best friend there and they go around town with him and his cart
they both secretly find him very attractive but will never tell him and instead make eyes at each other whenever he comes round
jakkanna finds them at some point with the excuse that he's on his way to guruvayur for a pilgrimage or something
he tells them that there was a woman he loved in trilingadesa who was trapped in an unhappy marriage, and he had promised to take her away, but then he was banished and had no way of reaching her; and he went searching for her after being pardoned and found her; her husband had passed and his son disliked jakkanna at first for abandoning them
charan and tarak tease him a lot about it
tarak started dancing again, and he's been practicing with a lady in the village
he has his first performance this evening, after a long, long time
they write letters to their families and friends, and every so often they meet halfway with one of these friends to receive the responses
they're still very much in love
one day they will go back to their kingdoms and help their brothers and sisters rule
they will be happy

The Warrior 2022
This is the tale of a young Doctor, Satya, coming to Kurnool city to start a role as an intern in a hospital. He crosses paths with a group of men who work for Guru, who is the crime boss that runs pretty much everything, and everyone, in Kurnool. This is the story of what happens next.
I am in no way an expert in cinema, and most definitely not in the cinema of South Asia, so some of this review will only be based on my limited experience of watching movies from that region.
That being said, I think, it is widely known that South Asian cinema has expertise in a very specific style of movie making, and this matches my own experience of watching these films over the years. It uses big choreographed song and dance numbers, usually peppered throughout the films, and when there is violence and fighting it is hyper-stylised and doesn't hold back. This is done in a way that western movies simply can not match, and i have to say it is better because of it.
The Warrior does not skimp on either aspect of this and, honestly, it is a glorious film. The cinematography is brilliant. The film is vibrant and full of action, as well as moments of extreme pathos and comedy. Admittedly I watched it through the eyes of a very western man. I don't know how this film has been received in its home territories and surrounding areas, but I hope it was looked at well.
The two main characters, Satya and Guru played by Ram Pothineni and Aadhi Pinisetty respectively, have decent arcs and are both fully fleshed out. Satya is a young, naive doctor who finds himself in a situation he would never have expected to have faced and does what's needed to overcome it. Guru is a literal moustache twirling villain in the best possible way. Despite him being a violent crime lord I really liked the way he came across on screen.
The main love interest for the protagonist is the whistling radio DJ Mahalakshmi, played by Krithi Shetty. It is her and Satya that dance in the big numbers, and both of them flow across the screen showing a multitude of dance styles as well as singing. I absolutely loved the dances and it was a nice change to watch these moments of joy, elegance and pure passion for the arts, as they appeared at various times.
Kurnool city is almost a character in itself, alive with the hustle and bustle of daily life. It looks incredible on film, but shows all aspects of life there as the cameras move around. I'll be honest that I had to google to see exactly where it was as it wasn't a city name I was familiar with, and that is something I'm almost annoyed at myself for having had to do.
Can I honestly say if this is a good film? I'm not sure if I have that ability, but what I can say is that i enjoyed it immensely and will, if it is in the cinema long enough, be going back to watch it again. There were moments I hid behind my hands, moments I cheered, and moments of 'holy shit'.
I do need to mention the run time though. Overall it is nearly three hours long but, doing something western cinema stopped doing years ago, there was an intermission about half way through. A great time to go to the bathroom or get fresh snacks. Despite the intermission the run time didn't seem too long, and I could have sat through the whole thing in one go.
Because of all of that I'm giving it a 9/10, with a full recommendation to go watch it, with a caveat that it is subtitled so just be aware of that. It has sparked me to seek out more south asian cinema in the very near future.
