AU where Jirt actually stands behind the silmarils being hallowed against mortality, and no human *or* peredel can safely touch one.

Beren's hand is burnt away instead of or in addition to being bitten off. Dior has to rebuild Doriath without the huge advantage of using the silmaril (magically or politically). Unless maybe Nimloth wears and wields it? Dior could pass that off by claiming it should always be worn by the reigning queen, to honor Luthien... Likewise, Elwing and Sirion have to get along without the purification, and possibly can't hold on.

(The dwarves still add it to the Nauglamir. I trust the dwarves to make sensible use of PPE.)
