i can't believe i'm saying this because at one point there was no one in this fandom who had not read or at least had an opinion on As the Universe Shifts, but i think new fans should read it. not to like, "get watcher lore right" but because it's actually a fairly enjoyable fic and it's sad to see older fics fade from the fandom consciousness.

and also inversely to get watcher lore right. XD because a lot of y'all are passing along "lore" that you should know doesn't come from any canon source (mr. inthelittlewood's recent contributions aside) but from a fanfic written in the year twenty nineteen that simultaneously channeled some truly awful Grian characterization and also shaped an entire fandom's subconscious understanding of it.

Which there's nothing wrong with. Headcanons are headcanons. But y'all gotta stop arguing about "lore" that came from a fic, lol.

((ETA: as a warning, the author of ATUS was also instrumental in the blowup that ended up chasing ZombieCleo off tumblr, which is unacceptable. And also a piece of fandom history that needs to be known.))

#imo you can blame 95% of the ''angsty teen protagonist'' tropes for people writing Grian on ATUS #and looking at it now #especially in the wake of fics like Dog at the Door or This is About a Stuffed Bird or Redstone and Skulk #ATUS is...not particularly well written. or punctuated #but a lot of what comes off as trope-y and cliched was basically the first time someone had used those elements #and yeah apparently the author was hugely anti-hermitshipping and that caused some drama #but whatever. go read the fic #and while you're at it grab some other classics #hermitfans of 2025 would react to The Red Sun Never Sets like a victorian child drinking redbull
