Academy of St. Martin In the Fields with Joshua Bell, Musical Director and Violinist
If you have never seen someone simultaneously conduct and solo, it is crazy. I was so desperately trying to capture his arm as he conducted but he left before I could finish. Imagine my joy when he returned to the stage. He certainly didn't. I'm sorry, Joshua Bell, for being way too enthusiastic about you coming back to the stage and scaring you with my face.
Pictured is Joshua Bell, Louise Goodwin (timpani), and Lynda Houghton (double bass).

Tía Pepa had invited Isabela out for a preliminary vow renewal shopping trip. They weren't planning to buy anything today. Of course, they'd come back with most of the family (sans Tío) to really make a decision, but there was no harm in shortlisting a few dresses.
That was what her tía had said and that was what Iabela kept telling herself as they strolled down the aisles of dresses. But, all she could think about was the last time they'd done something like this...Isabela was the one getting married.
And she was not married now.
Still, Isabela was very good at smiling. She smiled now as she turned at the sound of Pepa's voice, who was showing off another dress to her, pulling it from the rack.
"Oh, I like that one but I'm not sure about the hem...are you wanting to go that short?"

Sunday, 11-17-24, 7pm Pacific
'Evenin' all, Mr. Baggins here with your Sunday Serenade, music to soothe your achin' nerves and help ease us all into a good night. Let's start off with the Brahms Serenade No. 2 in A Major for Small Orchestra, Op. 16, performed here by Lenny and the New York, their classic 1968 recording on Columbia Masterworks.
youtube
Let's go back a few years to Fritz Reiner and The Chicago, this time playing Ravel's "Rapsodie espagnole", a work in four movements: Prelude a la nuit, Malaguena, Habañera and Feria.
youtube
Let's call Maestro Reiner and the band back for a Ravel encore, the haunting "Pavan for a Dead Princess".
youtube
Let's travel from Spain to Germany now, with Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5. Karl Ristenpart and the Chamber Orchestra of The Saar do the honors, from their definitive set of the complete Brandenburgs, recorded in 1960:
youtube
Let's hear the legendary Fritz Kreisler, with Thomas Petre, William Primrose & Laurie Kennedy playing Kreisler's String Quartet, a historic recording from 1935.
youtube
I thought we might revisit Guiomar Novaes playing the music of Debussy, this from the sole recording on Decca records that she made in the 1960s. Here are a group of four of Debussy's Preludes, including the gorgeous "Poissons D'or" (Goldfish).
youtube
Next we have a gorgeous Serenade for 13 Wind Instruments by Mozart, K361, also known as "The Gran Partita". Sir Charles Mackerras conducts the ensemble. Fifty minutes of heaven.
youtube
Haydn wrote three Symphonies called respectively Morning, Noon, and Night. Let's hear the Symphony No. 8, "Le Soir" or "The Night", with our friends Neville Marriner and the ASMF, from a 1980 Philips recording.
youtube
And we have one more selection tonight, the single movement from Schumann's Kinderszenen, "Traumeri", or "Dreaming", used by Vladimir Horowitz as one of his life-long signature encores. Here is his iconic performance from this legendary concert in Moscow, in 1986. The emotion, and the tears, from both Horowitz and the audience make this one of the most profound peformances of this piece ever recorded.
youtube
And hoping that leaves you with a smile and a warm heart, this is Mr. Baggins signing off for tonight's Sunday Serenade. I'll be back with you at 8am Pacific for Morning Coffee Music, selections to get us in gear and in good cheer.
Until then, dream sweet dreams, babies, dream sweet dreams.
Baggins out.

'Evenin' all, Mr. Baggins back with a set of music to soothe your achin' nerves and help ease us all into a good night. Let's start out with a little Mozart, here is the incomparable soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, singing Susanna's aria from The Marriage of Figaro, "Dove sono", from a live 1959 recording.
youtube
For the next 50 minutes or so, let's hear from harpsichordist Sylvia Marlowe, with her reading of Bach's "Goldberg Variations", written to help put Mr. Goldberg to sleep at night! From her classic 1963 recording.
youtube
Next we'll revisit the legendary clarinetist Benny Goodman, this time joined by The Budapest Quartet, for their reading of Mozart's divine Clarinet Quintet in A, K581.
youtube
The engineers at RCA were the true geniuses of mid 1950s High Fidelity recording. The recordings made on RCA during the mid-late '50s are counted among the most sonically correct, even to this day. One of their superstar ensembles was Condutor Fritz Reiner and The Chicago Symphony. Reiner whipped the CSO into a WORLD-CLASS orchestra that was easily able to hold their own on the world stage. Here is Maestro Reiner and the band, playing some of the waltzes by the Strausses, senior and junior.
Here is one of the later Symphonies by Franz Joseph Haydn, this is Symphony No. 96, nicknamed "The Miracle" because of an incident that occured at its premier. The audience was so enthusiastic after the piece ended that they all rushed to the front of the stage. At that precise moment, a huge chandelier that was hanging over the center of the audience crashed to the ground. Had anyone still been in their seats, they would have been killed. The "Miracle" Symphony is played here for us by Neville Marriner and the ASMF.
youtube
I generally subscribe to the idea that a lot of 20th Century classical music is simply unlistenable...I'm not a big fan of "12 tone" or any of the other experimental "modern" strains of music. The main reason being there is no lyricism...no real poetry, no heart. Here is what is essentially the only listenable (to me) piece by Arnold Schoenberg, his "Transfigured Night". I find this as haunting as its disc-mate, the Strauss Metamorphosen. Performed by Neville Marriner and the ASMF.
youtube
Next we have Eugene Ormandy conducting The Philadelphia Orchestra, in the lush orchestration of a piano piece by Debussy, his "Reverie", a truly iconic interpretation.
youtube
Now let's hear the incredible Theremin virtuoso, Clara Rockmore, with her sister Nadia Reisenberg on the piano, in Rachmaninoff's "Vocalise", absolutely mind boggling performance, especially if you understand what is involved in playing the Theremin!
youtube
I will leave you tonight with a special treat: Clara in an actual video performance, one more gem left to us by this amazing woman. In 1976, synthesizer genius Bob Moog filmed this at Clara's apartment in New York City. The clip was digitally restored in 1998. Here is Clara Rockmore with her sister Nadia, to bring us their other-worldly reading of Saint-Saens "The Swan" from Carnival of the Animals.
youtube
This is Mr. Baggins, signing off for the night. I'll be with you again at 8am Pacific for Morning Coffee Music.
Until then, dream sweet dreams, babies, dream sweet dreams.
Baggins out.

Vampire Chronicles AU where Lestat wakes up from his dirt nap to the 20th century's HIP movement and goes, "what the fuck NO you're all doing it wrong" and becomes the enfant terrible of the classical world for his interpretations of 18th century French repertoire that are nothing like what anyone else is doing at the time. He doesn't really have much scholarship to back his shit up and yet in classic asshole-Lestat manner insists in interviews (which he gives in slightly archaic-sounding French) that this is just the way French people would have understood music needed to be played. Simon Standage is not a fan. Gustav Leonhardt absolutely hates his guts. Sir Neville Marriner, of all people, ends up being a huge proponent and invites him to guest solo with ASMF. Lestat's recordings influence a generation of violin students, for what their teachers frequently consider the worse. But he quickly grows bored with the whole scene and expands out to other genres in the 90s, prompting a fresh wave of ire from classical music nerds. You can't talk about him on rec.music.classical.recordings without starting a three-day flame war.
On a lark, Nigel Kennedy invites him onstage to jam at his late-night jazz club gig in Cologne and briefly sees the blaze of hellfire in Lestat's eyes as his brain churns out an impossibly complex improvisation for Coltrane's "Giant Steps". Nige will gladly recount this story to the media whenever the question of "is this a bit or are vampires real" surfaces. No one's sure if he's in on the bit or not.
One thing that always bugged me about the character of Lestat (in the books at least... I don't have streaming services right now, haven't watched the TV series) is that he was clearly good enough at violin to not get his head slapped clean off by Akasha when he played for her... two hundred years elapse until he forms a rock band, and he also has insane preternatural strength and reflexes... this dude would be a fuckin' Ling Ling by that point. How are you a violinist for two hundred years and not itching to flex on other violinists every chance you get? It's not like he doesn't have the ego for it.
