Hello Old Sports ! (Introductory Post)
I’m Lulabel (they/any) AKA the most insufferable Jay Gatsby kin to date /lh :D
As my first ever post I wanted to share my commissioned Natsby plushies that have just been mailed to me <3
I’m autistic and TGG has been a special interest of mine for around 4 years now, and I’ve decided to stop lurking and use tumblr as a little outlet to post about how not normal I am about this book and all the media attached to it! And as a little blog of the adventures of Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway (plush form :3)
I’ll be taking these little guys on two New York trips that I’ve got booked so stay tuned for that, and I’ll be taking them to future comic cons where me and my best friends cosplay TGG !! And I’ll be taking them on any trip I go on really.. So essentially, this is just going to be a silly blog of my plushies adventures, and my love for TGG (also I’m dying to interact with fellow members of the fandom so PLEASEEE hmu)

Gatsby: An American Myth is a brilliant literary adaptation. it asks: if we bring to the forefront many of the parts that are implied or hinted at in the text, how does that change how we view it?
if Nick and Jordan are undeniably queer, if Gatsby is actually white-passing and not white, if Myrtle and George’s briefly-possibly-alluded-to lost child is actually talked about, how much sharper does the book’s critique of the “lost” American dream get?
this musical refuses to let you ignore the nuances of these characters that were (more or less) *already present* in the book.
Daisy is absolutely a victim, but she is *also* a wealthy white woman who is willing to (literally) throw a working class woman under the bus (car) for her own safety, and who is willing to let a man of color face the consequences of her actions. Tom tricking George isn’t exclusively about getting rid of Gatsby, but also about a wealthy white man setting two marginalized characters against each other so that he doesn’t have to deal with them.
when we get to the end, when we meet Gatsby’s dad and learn that he’s Indigenous, when we contend with how disproportionately the violence impacts marginalized people, the conclusion is no longer that the American dream is lost or broken, but that it was a stolen thing to begin with.
I am sure there are political critiques I (or others) could / will make, but on first impression, I am blown away by how far it went with displaying the horror of the American machine.

look I don’t want to be out here starting a fandom war with the TikTok popular musical but I cannot wrap my head around how anybody could think the opening numbers of the two Gatsby shows are at all comparable because one of them is about colonization as the dead American dream exploiting the poor who become dependent on empire and the other is about PTSD, sure, but it’s as subtle as an anvil to Wile E. Coyote’s head

something that rly grinds my gears in theatre is when choices are made solely based on time period. and not including themes, symbolism, yk the actual Meaning of the show alongside its true-to-context setting.
take gatsby for example. you can either go “okay it’s in the 1920s in these parts of new york so we’re gonna have super glitz and glam here here and here” or. or.
you can say “okay well we know that for jay and daisy, their wealth came from other people’s downfalls (daisy through turning down jay and jay through wolfshiem’s deeds) and their status and class privilege is represented through myrtle getting hit by the car right. so let’s make that the entire setting of the play, disguised by glitz and glam. let’s make the entire set shiny and pretty and have those shiny and pretty things actually be smashed-up car parts, meaning the car accident is ‘happening’ the whole play, while still upholding the illusion of new money glam”. do u get me.

Guess who saw the A.R.T production of Gatsby the other night?!?!?! It was truly an amazing show (I legit cried during it) and I would love to bring up some of the highlights. In a few scenes, my only thought was “the tumblr is gonna love this”. It was a phone free show so I don’t have photos of the stage or actors but I’m happy with discuss.
1) The stage was made of metal car parts, glittery string curtain and two black marble staircases. It was kinda split between Gatsby’s world and the Valley of Ashes.
2) The actor for Nick, Ben Levi Ross, was probably the funniest actor in the show. He had great line delivery. He was also super short and literally everyone towered over him.
3) on everyone’s costumes, there was a coating of dirt/rust at the bottom. It was such a cool little detail.
4) Nick has a small panic attack when fireworks go off at the party and this is how him and Gatsby meet. They sit together on the bottom of the stairs and it legit felt like a rom com meet cute.
5) yes, Nick makes out with McKee. He spends every party scene from that point on flirting with some guy or making out with a member of the ensemble.
6) I’m not totally sure if Gatsby is still a bootlegger in this version but they show him killing a man so he’s definitely involved in some sketchy business.
7) Wolfsheim signs a song called “Look like heaven but feel like hell” which was my favorite. It’s him explaining Gatsby’s fake origins to Nick. Gatsby gets to do a full dance number and quick change into his pink suit.
8) They added some backstory to Myrtle and Wilson that they lost a daughter in the Spanish flu. It was a sad but sweet detail as to why they’re the way they are.
9) In the tea party scene, Nick pushes Gatsby back onto stage after he runs out in a panic.
10) Gatsby doesn’t die in the pool, Wilson shoots him on the staircase.
11) Gatsby’s father is indigenous which is LOVED! I’ve always imagined Gatsby to be indigenous and so seeing that others had the interpretation was amazing.
12) overall beautiful music. A lot of raw emotion and a wide range. Wolfsheim’s song and “The Damage you do” by Tom and Daisy were my favorites.
Let me know if have any questions about anything!!! I really want to discuss the show!! Here’s the book I brought signed by the cast!!!

Hello Great Gatsby fans. I haven’t seen much discussion about this so I thought I might share. For the queer, musical theater fans out there, Nick Caraway is a gay man in the new Great Gatsby musical written by Florence Welch
Tumblr media
I really hope this version is good and that it goes to broadway. I’m really not a fan of the papermill playhouse one that’s currently running.

Gatsby: An American Myth's creative team being largely female driven is especially felt in its big climactic number, The Dream Fought On. Taking place right at the peak of the Plaza Hotel fight, the song initially focuses on Gatsby's rising panic before it's taken over by two women lashing out against a society that has locked them in place: Daisy's realization that Gatsby's need to have her is no different from the objectification she's endured her entire life ("I'm not a light you can reach to, but someone to love" - sung from her to Gatsby), and Myrtle's declaration that she's wasted on the Valley of Ashes and deserves to be surrounded by people who live instead of haunt ("You're not a man, you're a ghost I could walk right through" - sung from her to Wilson).
That said, the song ultimately ends with a reminder that these two women are not sinking in the same boat as Myrtle's attempt to break out of her poverty is brutally torn apart by Daisy taking the wheel of her own story, the latter's wealth and race allowing for an escape from all consequence ("Salvation's coming" - the ensemble ironically sings as Daisy races towards Myrtle). While it should be noted that the original book's ambiguity on these characters' thoughts serves as its own commentary on the role women were expected to play, this team's desire to earnestly capture their voices and the nuances behind them is what is makes this such a thrilling adaptation in my eyes.
