I feel like this is awfully symbolic of Kokichi’s character overall. He hides his real potential under a childish - ‘evil’, or.. otherwise ‘insane’ - mask, so that he won’t have a target on his or others’ backs; whether that target is left by the ringleader in the killing game, or the people threatening him and his loved ones in the outside world.

It makes you go digging through layers and layers - lie after lie - before you really get to the core of him, and why he even lies in the first place.
