How Many Types For the API Couplings?
There are several types covered in API 5CT standard for coupling specifications, classified in regular couplings, special clearance couplings, combination couplings, reducing couplings, seal ring couplings, and special bevel tubing regular couplings.
Regular couplings
Regular couplings diameters complied with API 5CT Tables C.32 to C.35 or Tables E.32 to E.35. Coupling bearing contact face inside and outside edges shall be rounded or broken, but shall not significantly reduce the width of the bearing face (dimension b), since less thickness will not be safe to support the pipe weight. The ends of couplings shall be faced exactly at right angles to the axis.
Special clearance couplings
In the case specified in the contract, special-clearance (reduced outside diameter Wc) couplings for buttress (BTC connection) casing and external upset (EUE connection) tubing shall be furnished. Unless otherwise specified, special-clearance external upset tubing couplings shall have a special bevel on both ends. The inside and outside edges of the bearing face shall be rounded or beveled. The ends (or root face when beveled) of couplings shall be faced at right angles to the axis.
Special-clearance coupling dimensions and tolerances shall comply with as given in Tables C.33 and C.35 or Tables E.33 and E.35 and as shown in Figures D.3 and D.5. Color identification sees clause 11.
Combination couplings
Combination couplings with different types of the thread of the same specified size shall be furnished when specified on the contract. The minimum length and minimum OD of this coupling shall be sufficient to work with the specified size specified threads.
Reducing couplings
Reducing coupling is also a kind of pup joint, used to connect two pipes of different diameters with the same or different types of thread on the two ends. Same with combination coupling, minimum length and minimum diameter of reducing couplings shall be sufficient to support the specified size and threads.
Seal-ring couplings
Sealing-ring couplings conforming to the requirements shall be furnished when specified in the PO. Grooves may be cut before or after threading at the manufacture’s option. Grooves and threads shall be free of fins, wickers, and ribbons that are loose or can become loose and fold into the thread dorm. Couplings shall be inspected after the final machining of the groove.
Special clearance coupling
When specified in the order, special-clearance (reduced outside diameter) couplings for buttress casing and external upset tubing shall be furnished.
Combination coupling
Reducing coupling are used to connect two pipes of different diameter with the same or different types of thread on the two ends, and shall be furnished when specified on the agreements. The minimum length and minimum diameter of reducing couplings shall be sufficient to accommodate the specified size and type of threads.

The term ERW in stainless steel vocabulary generally refers to a specific type of welding process. This kind of welding is one which involves both spot as well as seam welding. Typically, seam welding is a process which is commonly used during the manufacture of round, square or rectangular steel tubes.  On the other hand, the procedure to produce ERW stainless steel pipe dimensions would involve a flat stainless steel plate or sheet which is first rolled by being cold formed into the shape of a cylinder to become a pipe; followed by which, the cylindrical pipe is then welded using Electric Resistance Welding process longitudinally. Both continuous welded stainless steel pipe dimensions as well as electric resistance welded pipe can be manufactured by shaping rolls of coiled steel into cylindrical forms and welding along the longitudinal seams of the pipes.There are several ways for the electric current which is to be used for welding the rolled strip or rolled pipe. One of these methods including a revolving copper disc, which is a fixed alloy Cu or copper contacts along with induction coils. Using this method ensures that the temperature of the steel edge has risen to about 2600 deg F, which is required for effective welding. The rolling process for the ERW stainless steel pipe exerts so much pressure that it tends to create a metal welded seam on the outside as well as on the inside of the pipe. However, these weld seams, which occur during this stage could be then removed during the finishing process of these stainless pipe sizes schedules. The Protection of OCTG
Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) refer to collections of rolled metal products, or pipes and the accessories that are included in their manufacturing and processes. These items include, but are not limited to, thread protectors, stabbing guides, pipe chocks, bumper rings along with drill, casing and tubing pipes – the most critical element of OCTG. Pipe products are considered OCTG because of the specifications of each pipe with concerns to acceptable loading conditions, what they are capable of transferring, their strength and composition.
Drill pipes are heavy duty, strong and critical in any OCTG endeavor. The heavy, often seamless tubes are used in the rotation of the drill bit and drilling fluid where they can be joined using tool joints. When in use, pipes undergo axial tension along with high torque and internal pressure from the pipe’s own dead weight when in use, exhaust of drilling fluid, and the actual drilling and turning of the bit. A different type of pipe used to line the borehole (the actual hole dug in the ground) is referred to as a “casing pipe”. It too, undergoes axial tension just like the drill pipe, but it differs in that it has to withstand addition pressure from the rock and sediment that it has bored into, along with pressure from the oil itself. It is also extremely heavy duty.
An additional pipe will go inside of the casing pipe, and will eventually become the pipe through which the oil will travel. This pipe is referred to as a “tubing pipe.” Tubing pipes are usually produced in segments of about nine meters (or approximately 30 feet), with threaded connectors at each end. Tubing pipes are the most simplistic of the OCTG pipe family. The connectors at the end of tubing pipes can and should be protected by drill pipe protectors during storage and transportation. This will also protect against corrosion that can happen. When tons of oil is being pumped through tubing pipes, it is imperative that there are no damages which could compromise the integrity of the pipe threading.
