"uh," anne's voice echoed through sasha's (usually pristine) kitchen. "you've been banned from the kitchen, waybright. go and keep look out like you're supposed to be doing," anne said, looking up from her ipad with a playful scowl on her face.
sasha heaved a dramatic sigh and slumped into one of the, very expensive, dining chairs. "annie, i love you more than you could ever know, but i can not sit out there on lookout anymore or i might actually go insane." okay, maybe she was being a bit dramatic, but in her defense, anne had given her the job of 'marcy lookout' almost three hours ago and she hadn't moved off the chair by the window in all that time.
"you were in the army for years but can't stand lookout for your own girlfriend?" anne chuckled, her nose wrinkling when she measured out some more flour.
"that's different," sasha muttered, propping her head up with her chin. "i didn't really have a choice about the army." anne only hummed in response, most likely having zoned her out.
she usually did that when she was baking, it was one of the only things she could truly focus on after amphibia. sasha understood that, though she found her release in painting instead (mainly because no one actually trusted her within ten feet of the oven), after spending so long having to be alert constantly, the three of them had struggled with actually relaxing once they came back for good.
painting had never been one of sasha's talents before amphibia, in fact it had been her worst class at a point, so no one seemed to understand where the sudden interest in it came from. sasha liked to think it was because she found throwing colours at a canvas fun and a better way to take her frustration out than keeping it bottled up. what had started as just throwing something at a blank page and hoping for the best, quickly turned into sasha's favourite hobby. that's why she'd been tucked away in the spare-room-turned-art-studio for the past week, trying to paint something perfect for marcy's birthday.
after much trial and error, she'd finally decided to do a landscape painting of the night sky in amphibia. stargazing had always been one of marcy's favourite things and her interest in the topic had only increased tenfold when they arrived in amphibia, a land with little to no light pollution. during their limited time together, marcy had talked sasha's ear off about the stars, how different they were to earth, how many new constellations and stories there were to learn, how much more interesting it all was. sasha hadn't realised she'd been taking in the information at the time, but standing in front of the canvas, it all came back to her, as clear as day, and she spent almost a whole week finding every picture the three of them had and trying to replicate the view of the night sky from marcy's favourite balcony as best she could.
she'd actually only finished it a few hours before, she'd hardly taken off her apron when the foor flew open and anne demanded she kept an eye out for marcy. sasha hardly even had a say in the matter as anne pulled her through her house and pushed her into her father's armchair that looked out onto the empty street, leaving with a thanks and a quick kiss.
sasha liked to think she'd done a good job, her eyes never left the road and she hardly moved an inch in the several hours she'd been sat there. in fact, she'd only gone against anne's request when her leg started cramping and she had to get up.
"you're an awful look out, you know that right?" anne's voice, now much closer than before, broke through sasha's train of thought.
blinking slowly, she saw anne sitting across from her at the table, a smile on her flour covered face. in fact, it seemed anne was totally covered in the stuff, her face and hair were covered in a fine layer of flour. it stuck to her eyelashes, more falling off each time she blinked. "did the flour explode or something?" sasha asked, opting to ignore anne's comment.
anne frowned and looked down at herself. "there may have been a... small accident," she said sheepishly, rubbing her hands on her blue apron. "but i cleaned it all up! you would never even know it happened."
"you didn't do a very good job at cleaning yourself up," sasha muttered with a fond smile. "here, let me get it," she said, leaning across the small table and gently rubbing her thumb across anne's cheek. it didn't do much in the way of getting rid of the flour, but it got rid of enough for anne's freckles to appear.
"why do i feel like that did literally nothing?" anne asked quietly.
"because it didn't," sasha replied, meeting anne's soft gaze. it felt like eighth grade all over again, the soft looks, the closeness, the butterflies in sasha's stomach that hadn't been there before, and before she knew it, they were leaning in. closer and closer until sasha could feel anne's breath on her cheeks, and then-
the front door slammed open. shit. "so much for lookout," anne hissed, though the slight smile on her face told sasha she wasn't really upset.
"hello?" marcy called. the sound of her crutches on the faux marble of sasha's lobby grew ever closer as marcy made her way through the house. "you guys in here? your mom told me you would be-"
anne flapped her hands for a moment, frantically glancing around as if marcy would miraculously not noticed the distinct smell of chocolate cake and the balloons set up in the living room. "go, keep her distracted," she said eventually, shoving sasha out of the kitchen.
"what? why me?" sasha whispered, turning to the door being slammed in her face.
"sasha!" marcy cried, a bright grin gracing her features when she rounded the corner.
"mars!" she responded, her own smile on her face as she ran up to marcy and picked her up.
"i missed you today," marcy hummed, wrapping her arms around sasha's neck. "bothering lady olivia was no fun without you."
"missed you too, marbles," sasha smiled, quickly kissing marcy's cheek.
"well duh, i'm your girlfriend, it's your legal obligation to miss me," marcy giggled then looked around. "now, where's my cake? i'm starving."
"what?" anne's muffled shout was quickly followed by loud cackles.
---
an hour, and a lot of cake, later, sasha had left marcy and anne in the living room to go and get her present. she wasn't so sure why she was so nervous, it was for marcy, she would love it sasha was certain of that. but even the reassurances couldn't calm sasha's pounding heart as she gently carried the painting back to her girlfriends.
"ooh, what you got there?" marcy asked as soon as sasha entered.
"it's um," sasha swallowed, glancing from the painting back to marcy. "it's your present. from me," she added awkwardly, her grip tightening on the canvas as she watched marcy's face. "it isn't much, and it probably isn't really what you wanted, but i know you like the stars and i wanted to capture them for you-"
"sasha," marcy interrupted, her eyes wide and bright, "i don't care if it isn't what you think i wanted. if it's from you, i know i'm gonna love it." then she clapped her hands and wiggled in her seat. "now lemme see!"
sucking in a final breath, sasha turned the painting around. her eyes didn't leave marcy's face for a second as she took in the painting. she wasn't sure what emotions crossed marcy's face, but she could see the tears welling in her eyes. "oh, i love it so much," she whispered hoarsely.
sasha could only watch as marcy got out of her seat and ran into sasha's arms. "it's so beautiful, sasha," she said in between peppering wet kisses all over sasha's face. "it's perfect, thank you, saturn," marcy mumbled, pressing her forehead to sasha's.
"it's no problem, mars, seriously."
