Also that his view of the Teen Goth Underdogs generally leaves out people who are Not Like Him (namely, straight white men) -- from the pretty much universally white casts to whitewashing a Jewish story (which is *intimately* tied with historical Jewish oppression) in "The Corpse Bride" (which he only had partial responsibility for, I'll admit) to...whatever he did to the women of Dark Shadows in 2012 (...RIP Victoria, Angelique, and Julia). Somehow, a show set in the *1960s* did a better job humanizing its female characters than one made in 2012.
He strikes me as a specific kind of Straight White Guy who thinks that the social stigma that he got from being bullied in school = larger systemic discrimination and, as a result, never bothers to unlearn the biases that he's internalized over the years.
I don't think he's *evil*, or that he's even incapable of *good* writing, but I do think that he's limited himself by never looking outside of his own narrow life experiences and that there are better creators available for young goths in 2024, even though I'll give him credit for helping to pave the way for those other creators.
i have a few bones to pick with the recent letterboxd article ranking tim burton movies but i love the person who summed up his thing as “mopey misfits versus the vile intolerant normies”

Monica Puig (PUR) vs Angelique Kerber (GER): Women's Tennis Singles Final || A Sports Analysis
Tumblr media
Tennis, original name lawn tennis, is a racket sport that can be played individually against a single opponent or two teams of two players. Each player uses a tennis racket strung with a cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. Points are awarded to a player or team whenever the opponent fails to return the ball within the court's prescribed dimensions correctly. Organized tennis is played according to rules sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the world governing body of the sport (Lorge, 2012).
Today's blog will focus on a single match, precisely the match between Monica Puig (PUR) V.S Angelique Kerber (GER) in Rio 2016 Olympics. This analysis will also consist of the court dimensions, equipment, basic skills, technical and tactical skills of each team, rules of the game, officials of the sport, and the overall game.
youtube
Court Dimensions
A tennis court is 78ft (23.77m) in length and 27ft (8.23m) in width, with the service line being 6.4m from the net. A singles court has a total playing area of 195.65m². The court is divided into two equal areas by a net suspended by a cord or metal cable attached to two net posts. The net is 1.07m high and is fully extended to fill the space between the two nets posts. The net is 0.914m high at the center, held down tightly by a white strap. A white band covers the cord or metal cable and the top of the net. For singles matches, the net posts' centers are 0.914m outside the singles court on each side.
The lines at the end of the court are baselines, and the lines at the sides of the court are sidelines. The baseline is up to 8m wide. Service lines are two lines between the singles sidelines, 6.40m from each side of the net, parallel with the net. On each side of the net, the area between the service line and the net is divided into two equal parts called the service courts. The line dividing the service courts is the center service line and is drawn parallel with the singles sidelines and halfway between them. The center service line is 4.11m wide.(Tennis Court Dimensions & Size, 2020).
Tumblr media
Equipment
Tumblr media
The picture consists of things such as a cap, headband, racket, water bottle, uniform or jersey, shoes, tennis balls, and the player’s bag.
Tumblr media
There are also other equipment such as the umpire’s chair, net and post, and the player’s bench or seat for them to rest.
Basic Skills
Stance
Tumblr media
The best stance for each shot is different and depends on many factors, including a player's position on the court, the grip, and the angle and pace of the ball coming towards the player. Four different stances are used in the game; these include the open, semi-open, neutral, and closed stances. Both players did the stance in their comfortable and advantageable way to get and return the ball. As you can see, where the player was about to serve, they have their stance to bend their upper body forward and make their leg straight to be ready to receive the ball. Also in the picture above, this is frequently the stance used by Kerber to return the ball.
Footwork
Tumblr media
Good footwork is an essential skill in tennis. It enables you to reach the ball quicker and more efficiently, which allows you to play a greater variety of strokes. Although you're not traveling a far distance to the naked eye, tennis players rack up miles of walking and running throughout a match. Endurance is vital, but so is your footwork because there are tons of quick movements that you need to make in a short time and over a short distance.
Serving
Tumblr media
The serve is the stroke that begins every single shot in a tennis match. While one player is serving, the other is receiving, and they take turns after the end of every game. Serves can take different shapes and forms, but they are generally characterized by a movement where the player swings the racket above his head while still standing behind the baseline. Besides, the player who got more aces was Kerber, especially in the second set.
Returning
Tumblr media
A return is a shot where one player waits to see where the other player serves lands and then attempts to hit the ball back to the other side. A return can be executed in several different ways, with a forehand, backhand, slice, block, or chip. The most important aspect of a return is just getting the ball back to the other side, no matter how. Both players have executed this skill and tried to do their best in returning the ball.
Grip
Tumblr media
A grip is a way of holding the racquet to hit shots during a match. The three most commonly used conventional grips are the Continental, the Eastern, and the Semi-Western. Most players change grips during a match depending on what shot they are hitting.
Ball Control
Tumblr media
There are five primary controls of the ball: depth, height, direction, speed, and spin.  Mastery of these controls is essential to mastery of tennis stroke production. Ball control is the secret of consistency in tennis. A player can keep the ball on the racket for a prolonged period of time during impact. It consists of accelerating the racket and accelerating at a precise moment. In the game, Puig showed how fearless and accurate she is in her shot in a different direction. It was genuinely fascinating to watch because it led to the other player trying to understand Puig's shots.
Technical and Tactical Skills of Each Team
PUIG: I can say that Puig is genuinely an admirable athlete. I was truly fascinated by her gameplay, especially how she mirrors the opponent's style at the first set and how she can manipulate the ball. In the first set, she tends to hit the ball near the court's line, making her make a lot of outside hits. However, as the game passed by, she was able to control more of the ball. The strategy that she had was to go near the net and smash or hit the ball to where the other player will have a hard time catching, meaning the other place where the opponent is located. Moreover, she was fearless and aggressive in playing the game. She hit where she will have an advantage, causing her to have more points and was very unexpected in her gameplay, specifically in 1:40:25. She also had the stamina to run around may it be the other side of the court or where her opponent is located. In addition, she is good in forehand and backhand. There was a part that I was totally in awe with her due to her backhand because I thought that she would use a lot of strength, but actually, it was the opposite, causing her opponent to had a hard time returning it. All in all, Puig really has her own technical and tactical skills that she used to gain more points.
KERBER: Based on what I heard, Kerber was having a non-vital shoulder injury and required treatment on her back injury between sets. As to why she was having a hard time catching with the ball and her stance mainly was to bend her two knees deep enough that one leg almost touches the floor. But despite all of that, Kerber was still able to play well, which makes me commend her. She is more on strength, causing her to have a lot of aces in the game. As the game passed by, she improved well, which is why she won the second set, and she was also able to adapt the tactics and techniques her opponent have used. She did a typical shot of Puig but not as good as her. However, what I like about her was that she was not yet ready to give up even though there was a huge gap in the last set, and it was seen that she was frustrated due to the changing of directions of Puig but still did her best in the end especially in the end part. There was a very long rally of deuce in the end, and it was really thrilling and entertaining to watch. All in all, Kerber showed an outstanding game to all the audience by using the different techniques and tactics she has.
Rules of the Game
The game starts with a coin toss to determine which player must serve first and which side they want to serve from.
The server must then serve each point from alternative sides on the base line. At no point must the server’s feet move in front of the baseline on the court prior to hitting their serve.
If the server fails to get their first serve in they may take advantage of a second serve. If they again fail to get their second serve in then a double fault will be called and the point lost.
If the server clips the net but the ball goes in the service area still then let is called and they get to take that serve again without penalty. If the ball hits the net and fails to go in the service area then out is called and they lose that serve.
The receiver may stand where they wish upon receipt of the serve. If the ball is struck without the serve bouncing then the server will receive the point.
Once a serve has been made the amount of shots between the players can be unlimited. The point is won by hitting the ball so the opponent fails to return it in the scoring areas.
Points are awarded in scores of 15, 30 and 40. 15 represent 1 point, 30 = 2 and 40 = 3. You need 4 points to win a game. If a game lands on 40-40 it’s known as deuce. From deuce a player needs to win 2 consecutive points to win the game. After winning one point from deuce they player is on advantage. If the player wins the next point they win the game, if they lose it goes back to deuce.
To win the set a player must win 6 games by 2 or more. The opening sets will go to a tie break if its ends up 6-6 where players play first to 7 points. The final set will not have a tie break and requires players to win by two games with no limits.
If a player touches the net, distracts his opponent or impedes in anyway then they automatically lose the point.
The ball can hit any part of the line for the point to be called in, outside the line and the ball is out.
The balls in a tennis match are changed for new balls every 6 games
A player loses a point if they fail to return the ball in either the correct areas on the court, hits the net and doesn’t go into opponent’s area or fails to return the ball before it bounces twice in their half.
Officiating the Sport
Chair Umpire
Tumblr media
The Chair Umpire is much more than just the person who sits in a highchair and announces the score. They are the guardians of the Rules of Tennis and enforce them to ensure a match is played in a spirit of fair play. He/she is the final authority on all questions of fact during the game. Questions of fact include whether a ball was in, the calling of a service let, or the calling of a foot-fault. In matches where line umpires are also assigned, the chair umpire has the right to overrule if he or she is sure that an apparent mistake has been made.
Line Umpire
Tumblr media
Line Umpire "calls all shots relating to the assigned lines.". They work on court as part of a team of between one and nine line umpires. Each line umpire is assigned to one line or, in the case of a short-handed crew, a system position. For example, a line umpire on the receiver's side may have to cover the center service line, then, following the service, move to one of the sidelines.
Ball Persons
Tumblr media
There are usually six-ball persons on a court to look after this job – two at the back of each side of the court and two more at the net, covering each side.  Their job is to ensure that the server always chooses tennis balls to choose from before they start to serve.  They change the balls after every six tennis games and ensure that the players want for nothing. In the picture above, the other two ball persons are hidden and was not captured by the camera.
Tournament Referee
Not positioned courtside, the tournament referee is the person in charge of making all decisions regarding all the matches.  They oversee the schedule of play and are the person assigning matches to specific courts. They make sure that all the ITF's regulations are enforced, including all involved conduct, and must be present whenever any matches are being played.  They can overrule chair umpires, and in fact, their decision is final. They are present at the draws and are responsible for allocating the seeding. They are the person who has a say in whether a play is suspended on account of rain and must be available to resolve disputes regarding tennis rules.
Overall Game
All in all, the game was entertaining and fascinating. The players moved and hit the ball truly made me in awe and mesmerized by how they played well. Puig truly gained attention with her fearless and aggressive strategy of hers going near the net and still earning points on it. At the same time, Kerber showed her strength and determination to win the game despite her injury. Both of the players showed all the necessary skills to play tennis and their own kind of technical and tactical skills. However, we all know there is always a winner in a game, and Puig showed that she is the one right for that gold medal. Hence, Puig produced a devastating final set to beat Kerber 6-4 4-6 6-1 in the women's final and claim gold for Puerto Rico, their first in Olympic history.

CHARACTER DETAILS
Character’s Name: Claudia Angelique Devereaux
Desired FC: Tasya Teles
Character’s Age: 28
Character’s Species: Original Witch
Character’s Sexuality: Gay. Very, very gay for pretty ladies.
CHARACTER BIOGRAPHY
With a name as notorious as Devereaux, Claudia has never resented that her cousin holds the heirship. In fact, despite being the eldest of their generation, her position as fourth in the line of succession has been more a source of relief to Claudia than one to ever ponder or contest.
Two months after reaching her majority, Claudia’s mother married a handsome young man from a respectable, if significantly less well-known, witch family. Their marriage wasn’t the kind that inspires fairy tales, but they enjoyed each other’s company, and by the following summer, the Devereaux family welcomed the first-born daughter of the new generation: Claudia Angelique.
For the first eight years of her life, Claudia carried the heirship with little recognition of what such a position entailed. She received the traditional Devereaux education in magic, tradition, and the rites of familiars. At the tender age of four, a particularly bad night terror took the family by surprise when Claudia’s midnight screams were accompanied by flames licking up the walls of bedroom. From then on, her magic showed a particular fondness for the element of fire. Rituals involving the sun and candles have always come easier to Claudia, and she finds her body and magic more in tune during the warm, sunny summer months than the dark, oppressive cold of winter.
Much like her hair color, the disdain for the wolves was passed down from grandma and aunt and mother, but in the quiet moments with her father, Claudia learned a touch more compassion for their beastly protectors. Her father knew well enough not to speak out against a Devereaux woman, but passed along his thoughts to his only child that perhaps they might have a better relationship with the wolves if they were to work with them, instead of heralding over them. As a child, the difference in her parents’ views meant little; Claudia wasn’t allowed to interact with the wolves beyond their need for her protection anyway.
Unfortunately, her father was caught in the first wave of the witch hunts. Whether they took his body or burned it when they torched the shop they found him in, Claudia was never able to find out. Even with Claudia’s blood, they were never able to retrieve any remains to bury back on the family estate.
Being unable to place her father’s spirit to rest is one of the few things for which Claudia harbors true resentment.
After his death, studying magic became more of a survival skill, a way to learn how to fight and protect rather than how to just connect with the earth and her innate powers. Claudia studied the use of fire as a weapon; if the hunters would use it, so would she. She snuck behind her mother’s back to get her hands on texts of holistic spells, dabbling in the study of herbal witchcraft, healing, and protective spells beyond the original family’s old rituals.
It took nearly a year for her mother to catch her brewing a potion for luck in the kitchen tea kettle. After threatening to tell her Aunt Brigid about the incident, Claudia promised to stop her studies and stick to the family magic – that their skills and the wolves had been enough to protect them for centuries and it would be enough to protect them now.
But like any young woman forbidden from a new lover, Claudia only found ways to be sneakier. By the time they relocated to Carden Manor, Claudia had a holistic herbal kit hidden in the handles of her hairbrush and hand mirror. She kept spell pages hidden between the pages of old books.
If a war is coming, she intends to be prepared for it.
CHARACTER PERSONALITY
Claudia is often the type to be mistaken for serious, when she is merely quiet and composed. Being an only child fitted with such a heavy set of expectations meant years spent with books rather than people. As such, while her opinions run wide and deep, she is unlikely to be the first to speak up in a crowded room. Her friendships are few, but strong, and her loyalty burns hotter than a brush fire. She will go to the ends of the earth for those she deems within her circle, and she is headstrong enough to follow through. She’ll play by the rules, but honor her own, working within the system to get what she wants. It’s easier to manipulate both people and rules than to outright break them, after all.
PLOTS AND POLITICS
Tradition has never mattered as much to Claudia as it does to her family. While she knows the words, the ceremonies, and the meanings, she’s always felt suffocated by the weight of her name, as if the very word tradition means limited. She hasn’t been given the space to be loudly progressive, but her beliefs find themselves chafing more and more with the ideals she’s been raised to uphold. What is the point of avoiding a type of magic if it might save witch lives? Why treat the wolves with such revulsion if they’re expected to give up their lives for witches?
I would love to explore Claudia interacting in various situations that make her navigation the conflict between her family-held and internal morals. Interacting and learning from witches of various backgrounds and having that come to a head with her family (particularly if it’s after Victoria’s turned) would be an amazing long-arc story line.

Wulf Moon and his Howling Good Kickstarter! By Angelique Fawns I joined Wulf Moon’s Wulf Pack writing group just over a year ago. My understanding of story structure --and how to craft a saleable short story --has skyrocketed since becoming a member. Not only does Moon give personal advice to his group, but every writer in the Pack is a talented author willing to help others improve with kind, helpful critiques. You can be invited to the Wulf Pack Discord if you purchase one of Wulf Moon’s writing seminars, and they are worth every penny. Moon recently released his “Super Secrets Illustrated Volume 1” in a limited printing. (I have a signed copy and love it.) He is in the middle of his Kickstarter for his next book, “How to Write a Howling Good Story.” Read on to learn more! AF: You’ve just launched your “How to Write a Howling Good Story” on Kickstarter. It has immediately skyrocketed to high numbers and was awarded a “PROJECT WE LOVE” on the platform. How did this happen?   WM: The Kickstarter for my new book on writing funded in ten minutes, and within a few hours exceeded over $5,000. The next day, it was awarded Kickstarter’s Project We Love, which gives it special recognition. At two weeks into the campaign, it reached $13,000 with over 150 backers. Throughout the campaign, it’s been at the very top in their Nonfiction category, and it was listed in the top twenty for several days when searching All Active Kickstarters in the World category. If you’ve watched Kickstarters, you know this is phenomenal success for a first launch. I am thrilled so many writers are backing this project and looking forward to the book! How did this come about? Four years ago, I won the international talent search contest for speculative fiction writers, Writers of the Future. After winning, I turned around and set up a free year-long workshop for emerging writers called Wulf Moon’s SUPER SECRETS of Writing. It was open to anyone that wanted to join, and I taught them everything I knew to help them advance their craft so that their writing would both sell to respected markets and win contests. Today, eight alumni from that workshop have either won Writers of the Future, been a published finalist in their bestselling anthologies, or both. One of my editing clients won as well. Thousands from around the world enter this contest every quarter. To my knowledge, so many winners coming from one writing workshop in such a short period of time has never occurred before in the Contest’s forty-year history. And it doesn’t end there. Super Secrets alumni have won Baen’s Adventure Fantasy Award, the Mike Resnick Memorial Award, and more. Many now have professional careers. I have expanded those teachings into paid workshops through my own company, and those taking my courses are invited into a private Discord group called Wulf Pack Writers. Here again, I do this to help emerging writers succeed. So far in 2022, in three respected anthologies we targeted, Wulf Pack Writers made up around half of all stories accepted. The workshop/online resource has won international awards and has over 800,000 views online.  Why has the Kickstarter done so well? The secret is out. The Super Secrets work. AF: You have become famous in the SF/F community for your Super Secrets on the Writers of the Future Blog. What can readers expect to find in this book? Will there be more books in the series?  How many? WM: That’s kind of you to say, Angelique. If I have become famous, it’s for helping struggling writers to succeed. This became my mission after I had struggled so hard to succeed and formed the Super Secrets of Writing topic, as mentioned with over 800,000 views. What I didn’t mention is that it has almost 5,000 posts to the topic, the majority to help those I mentored to understand the principles behind the teachings. It has become a huge labyrinth for writers to navigate. I’m creating the book at the request (actually de
mand) of its fans to condense it all and put it into a writing book they can easily study and refer back to. The name of the book is How to Write a Howling Good Story. It’s available in eBook, trade paperback, and hardcover as a pledge reward in Kickstarter until January 6th, along with many new virtual workshops. It will have most of the topics first shared in the Super Secrets thread, the published articles in my regular series on writing at DreamForge magazine, and new Super Secrets I’ve never shared before.  How many more books will there be? I’ve already published one, The Illustrated Super Secrets of Writing, Vol. 1. This is a workbook, the appetizer to the main course. When I was invited this fall as a guest author to Salt Lake FanX comic con, I printed 151 copies of this full color, fully illustrated, magazine-sized workbook based on my best Super Secrets. It sold out in two weeks. I’m bringing it back as an add-on in the Kickstarter. I recently showed it to Kevin J. Anderson. He flipped through its pages and told me he’s seen nothing else like it in the industry. It’s a publishing jewel, made possible by the brilliant illustrations gracing its pages by the talented Jane Noel, co-owner of DreamForge magazine. You’ve seen it. You have a copy. You know what I’m talking about. So yes, more to come. More workbooks—thus the Volume 1 in its title—and more books on writing. The next will feature the business and marketing side of writing today’s authors must master. No longer can writers hand over their careers to agents and publishers and lock themselves away from the public in their writing bunkers. Today’s authors need character agency, just as their characters do. They must learn proactive marketing strategies. I’m already working on a book to help them succeed here as well. But let’s get the How to Write a Howling Good Story Kickstarter and book launch fulfilled first.  Good things are here now. More good things are to come. AF: Why did you create your own writing group, The Wulf Pack? How much of your time does this support group take? What do you get out of running it? WM: I created the Wulf Pack Writers group so I could give ongoing help to writers taking my workshops. Mentoring isn’t throwing a few bones to hungry writers in a workshop and then waving goodbye. It’s teaching them how to hunt, so they can ultimately fend for themselves.  The startup for professional writers is tough, with few signs in the beginning to give you any indication you’re on the right path. I heard my mentor, the late David Farland, say it takes seven years of focused writing before an aspiring writer can make their first professional sale. Others say something similar—it takes writing a million words. Most writers don’t have the luxury to focus exclusively on their writing—they have full-time jobs, families to feed, bills to pay. As those rejections pile up in those first years after a writer gets up enough courage to complete stories and send them out to markets, many get discouraged. The majority give up. Some, just before they were about to break out and succeed. I know. I’ve snatched a few of those writers out of the fire. I’ve helped them by staying with them for the long haul. Which can actually be a short haul when you have a mentor that’s done what you’re trying to achieve and has the ability to teach lessons that are easy to absorb. It is true this writing group takes a great deal of my time. I’ve set up officers to help deal with the workload, and members all help and support one another. Just like in my Super Secrets Workshop, the work I do in the Wulf Pack Writers group is free. But it has grown large and is about to grow larger through the many workshops I’m offering in the Kickstarter. I’ll need to put it behind a paywall next year to limit the size and cover the demands on my time running a large writing group requires. I’ve resisted this for years—this is my way of giving back—but as my wife points out, it’s no good if I’m helping everyone else get published at the sacrifice of my own
work.  One last point. Many writers are loners, but I believe they should never run alone. All that rejection in the startup can be dangerous for writers. Lone wolves get slaughtered. Wolves that run in a pack survive because they work as a team to help one another. A good writing group working together to succeed can enhance a writer’s path with additional power. And they’ll ease the sting of rejections, and those negative comments that often come from friends and family. They’ll ease the pain, and they’ll howl for your triumphs.  Find your Pack. They’ll give you power.   AF: You’ve taken a unique path to your success as an author, and have dabbled in an astounding variety of careers. Can you tell us about that?   WM: Well, there’s a reason for that. A vertebra in my lower back is broken. It’s a quarter-of-an-inch away from slipping off the spinal column, which would sever my spinal cord and make me paralyzed from the waist down. I live with pain every day. Specialists tell me not to lift over ten pounds, and when I ignore my weight restriction, I’ve dropped to the ground temporarily paralyzed, or have ended up bedridden for months at a time.  When I was younger, I didn’t understand how serious my condition was. I broke and trained horses. I worked my way up in a restaurant from dishwasher to cook (some call me a chef, but I’ve never had that level of training, I just love to cook). I worked in a state hospital for the mentally disabled. I was foreman of the nursery of a top bonsai master in the U.S. I learned sales from scratch when my father bought a dozen of the first multi-folding ladders, and then pawned them off on me because he had no time to sell them. I pounded the pavement and developed accounts, even national chains like Target Stores—until the market eventually caught up with me and competitors developed their own brands.  I had another great run for five years with no-touch products for public restrooms—until bigger companies copied our design and lowballed their prices, driving me out of business.  From there, I went into the financial business, and developed the marketing and newsletters for financial startups. We moved to the San Juan Islands, where I expanded my love of painting watercolor and creating lampwork beads into a public studio, and my wife and I bought a clothing boutique in Friday Harbor to expand our creative endeavors. We doubled the business in the first year, tripled it in the second, and then the recession struck and ate us alive as twenty-one businesses in the town closed before us while we tried to ride it out. We lost our business, we lost our island home, my wife had cancer, my own health conditions declined, and in that dark night of the soul, I had an epiphany. I had always planned to make enough money to retire early and write full-time, and it seemed the world had always found a way to pull that rug out from under me. Now that we had nothing to lose, I decided to write full-time and trust that somehow, the money to live on would eventually come.     AF: How has your background affected your writing career? WM: I’ve learned nothing is certain in life, and while it’s a good thing to provide for your family, you’re not going to be truly happy if you’re selling out on your dream. I’ve always had the desire to write full-time, and throughout my life, I’ve always tried to make course corrections to get there. Learning the power of diverse income streams in my other businesses helped me to make full-time writing as a business possible. And all those diverse experiences I’ve had? The tragedies and the triumphs? They’ve enhanced my stories with realism that only comes from experiencing many life events. AF: Why have you chosen to focus on short stories versus novels/longer length works? WM: I figured if I mastered the short form, my writing would be at a level where I’d be successful at the long form of novels. I also recognized the necessity of ha
ving solid credits to get publishers to recognize that my work was bonafide, worth the risk they take in investing in a new author’s career. While that thinking is mainly outdated now with the decline of author promotion in traditional publishing and the rise of independent publishing platforms, I still believe having good credits and building a strong following before moving on to novels will provide a solid base to build a career upon. I do believe the success of my current Kickstarter provides proof that this theory is correct. At least for me. As they say, your mileage may vary.  AF: What is the most important piece of advice you would give writers looking to find profitability and success in publishing?  WM: Be true to yourself. If you know you’re a writer, and wish to become a published writer and make your living at it, you need to buy out time to write. Period. You will need to find a way to write full-time. That’s going to be hard at the start, and most likely will be a goal you will work toward for many years to come. Keep finding ways to reduce life expenses so you can work less, write more. AF: You write in a variety of genres. What is your favorite and why? What do you like to read personally? WM: I like writing in multiple genres and hybrids because it gets me out of my comfort zone and pushes me beyond my so-called boundaries. We really don’t have boundaries; we simply have new dimensions our writing consciousness hasn’t expanded into yet. Riding to the very edge of my creativity challenges my abilities, and guarantees my readers will be in for a treat with every tale I write. When they pick up a Wulf Moon story, I want them to feel child-like anticipation and wonder, knowing there will be new circus acts under this big top that they’ve never seen before. My favorite genre to write in? Fantasy in its multitude of forms, even though my science fiction stories have done quite well for me. I love fantasy because it is the unrestricted exercise of the imagination. AF:  What is in the future for Wulf Moon? WM: Fulfilling my Kickstarter rewards and workshops in the first half of 2023. Devoting the second half of 2023 to novels.  It’s time to initiate the final phase of my life-long master plan.

Capitol Centre
In 1927, a businessman from Sturgeon Falls purchased the property at 150 Main Street East in North Bay to build a theatre. During construction he went bankrupt and sold his interests to the Famous Players of Canada Corporation. Famous Players opened the doors to the new Capitol Theatre on June 1, 1929 for the screening of In Old Arizona, the first Fox Pictures “talkie” motion picture (movies with sound) of its kind. This brand new theatre had 1455 seats, state-of-the-art technology, elaborate decorative touches, and was referred to as a “palace of splendour.” It wasn’t the only theatre downtown; there was the Bay (Club 151), the Odeon (Northern Tikes), the Crystal Palace (next to Guardian Drugs), and the Royal (Royal Office Suites) – but the Capitol was the grandest of them all and is the only one left open today.
Tumblr media
It was in the offices of the Capitol Theatre that Roy Thomson, Lord Thomson of Fleet, started his media empire with the opening of his (and Northern Ontario’s) first radio station CFCH on March 3, 1931 – this later became CKAT. It was in the Capitol Theatre that the Dionne Quints enjoyed many Friday night movies when they could get away from their celebrity lives. The Capitol stood tall through the Great Depression and the Second World War, bringing laughter and plenty of wartime films like All Quiet on the Western Front to North Bay and area audiences. During wartime, patrons could purchase tickets with a scrap of metal from home (pipes, jewellery, cookware, cutlery, etc). This metal was melted down and used to produce munitions for the war effort.
Tumblr media
In the 1970s, an organization called North Bay Theatre and Arts Community Centre (TACC) was formed with the goal of establishing an art centre to house all arts-related endeavours within the city and surrounding district. At the time, North Bay had finally developed the Golden Mile area of the Lake Nipissing waterfront, had built arenas and parks throughout the city, and the final missing piece was to have a local performance hall and art gallery. When Famous Players announced in the 1980s that they wanted to convert the Capitol into smaller cinemas, TACC decided that the Capitol was too wonderful to get chopped up into small rooms, and that it could be the perfect facility for their dream arts centre. Since its reopening in 1987 the Capitol Centre and the WKP Kennedy Gallery has seen many great artists Canadian and international, both cherished celebrities and beloved locals like Johnny Cash, Phyllis Diller, Lynn Johnston, Brenda Lee, Roy Orbison, Jack Klugman, Blue Rodeo, Canada’s Group of Seven, The Barenaked Ladies, Graham Nash, Ed Eng, Jann Arden, Tom Cochrane, and many more. The Capitol truly is your home for arts and entertainment.
