I'm surprised every time I remember that The Old Guard doesn't have the massive fanbase I think it should have.
The sound track alone kicks my ass to kingdom come.

What if the reason they lose their immortality in The Old Guard is because they’ve given up hope and they can’t see the good they’re doing? This is based solely on my interpretation of Andy’s character but whenever Lykon said “it is my time” as he was dying, it made me think that maybe he was ready for it to be his time.
Nicky and Joe are never ready because they have each other. And even though Booker thinks he’s ready, he isn’t prepared to face mortality. We see that when Andy isn’t healing. He’d literally betrayed them for the chance to end their immortality but then when it actually seemed to be happening to Andy, he panicked. He wasn’t ready.
Quynh spent 500 years drowning and coming back in her prison and still didn’t die. And that seems like every reason to beg for mortality, except that she was holding on to something. Maybe it was anger, maybe it was grief or longing or simply needing to know Andy’s fate and why she never saved her, but I believe Quynh wasn’t ready yet either.
But Andy says “Let the world burn for all I care.” She doesn’t want to find Nile, she doesn’t want to deal with any of the things she’d been doing for the last several millennia, she was done. And that’s when she stopped healing.
She vowed to rescue Nicky and Joe, no matter what. She’d accepted that she was likely dying, finally. But she had one final mission and that was to save them, which she did.
And then, when it was all over and she finally saw everything that had happened as a result of her actions, all the good that she’d made possible, maybe that changed something. Maybe that renewed her dedication to change the world for the better, to fight for what she believes is right. Maybe meeting Nile and seeing her come back for them and fight and protect her and her friends, maybe that changed Andy’s perspective of her immortality and the life she’d been given.
And at the end, she says “Have a little faith” to Booker when he says he won’t see her again. She’s no longer convinced she’s going to die because she has a reason to live again.

I want more mischievous!Nicky takes.
Like Nicky making baklava with hella spicy peppers and giving it to Andy, running as she screams at him for ruining something so pure.
Or Nicky trolling Nile with historical stuff, "Yes, the original cast of the Tempest was definitely the best and nothing compares to seeing it at the globe, Bill was a good friend" but really they were in the colonies trying help the natives and stop what they could of the slave trade.
Or like swapping Booker's tech with children's toys of the same type when he's not looking.
Idk just mischievous!Nicky

I have so many Feelings about The Old Guard I have to get them out aaaaaaaaa. Ok I will try to keep this relatively spoiler free, but be warned I might spoil a little:
At it's heart this is a movie about relationships. I LOVED the relationships! This movie does such a good job of conveying the centuries of history between these immortal characters and doing it in other ways besides just them verbally expressing it. They touch often, you can feel the tenderness among them. The bond of being the only people on the planet who share their experience.
Even better the relationships are free of sexual bullshit (except nicky and joe obviously). I am amused by the flirty immortal as much as the next gal, but I loved the absence of that here. No one flirted with Nile, it was the furthest thing from their minds.
I always enjoy a good Found Family, but this was that on steroids. It was great the way that the group immediately folded Nile into the group. They are equal parts tender and mentoring to her, but you never feel they coddle her. They empathize and sympathize with her situation, because they've all been where she is. She's immediately expected to, and can pull her own weight, but they also make time to mentor her. I love it.
Speaking of Nile, I appreciated, particularly as a Black woman, the way she was portrayed. She was immediately shown to be extremely competent, to the point that even Andy was impressed with her, at the same time she's extremely vulnerable in this new world she's been dragged into. Kiki Layne did a great job being both tough and vulnerable. I appreciated that she was capable of holding her own and this wasn't just some sort of apprenticeship movie. She's green in terms of their world, but not in terms of her ability to take care of herself, and I really enjoyed they way the group immediately incorporated her. No kid gloves.
The lack of sexualization of the women, or even treating anyone really differently at all. Andy's a woman and the baddest bitch of the bunch, no one cares about the gays or that Nile is a black girl with braids. This is what the, I don't see race/gender/whatever world would look like. Not, I'm ignoring your differences but rather, I've been around so fucking long I literally do not give a shit it's all the same to me.
Often time LGBTQ relationships can be played for comedy or to titillate, but Nicky and Joe were none of that. Honestly one of the best portrayals I have ever seen. Just two murder men in eternal love. What they had was something beyond a relationship. Boiiiii.
Gah the camaraderie! The weight of centuries of friendship! Andy was the old god murder mom! It was everything!
Things I found weird:
Nile expresses some hesitation with becoming an unstoppable murder machine, and then too quickly gets over that hurdle. Yes I know why, after talking to [redacted] she thinks that they have a purpose and shit. I got it. It still felt like a very abrupt face.
A group of immortals feeling increasing anxiety over a world where everyone has a cell phone camera and the internet to upload their faces, seemed rather unconcerned with destroying a lot of evidence they left at the end of the movie, including a particular person who appeared to survive the climax.
Also never really felt like the group was in extreme danger. They can't die and I feel like they are being vastly underestimated at every turn. Sooner or later they would have gotten the upper hand against the bad guys.
Question:
Andy and Quynh were fucking right? Like they were together or were friends with benefits? I was confused because obviously the movie had no problem with showing same sex couples, but they weren't ever shown as together.

Andy: Rock-paper-scissors for who has to talk to the contractor
Nicky: Deal
*Tap, tap, tap*
Nicky: It’s a game of chance, how do you always win?
Andy: You always pick paper
Nicky: That is not true, here, go again
*Tap, tap, tap*
Nicky: One more time
*Tap, tap, tap*
Nicky: Alright, one more time
*Tap, tap, tap*
Nicky: One more time

Nicky: One more time

Nicky: God, this reverse psychology is a bust!

If you are looking for some musical inspo for pre-modern times TOG fic writing (or reading), may I direct your attention to the amazing Dead Can Dance. They have been my favourite band for over 25 years, and still give me chills when I listen to them each and every time.
Hailing from Melbourne, Australia in 1981, it was the band that launched Lisa Gerrard. She's the voice of, and song writer for, 'Gladiator', 'Ali' and 'Whale Rider', amongst many other films.
Somewhat unclassifiable although often referred to as avant-garde and dark neo-classical, DCD are heavily influenced by ancient music styles. Especially Middle Eastern and Mediterranean. Gerrard often sings in idioglossia (her own made up language).
I often have their albums on repeat while writing and find myself daydreaming of centuries long gone.

Here is the ANDROMECH 2.0 for GRENS: a 7.2 feet tall humanoid mecha designed to assit heavy exoskeletons piloted by humans. This version is a bit taller thant the previous iteration. The idea is to protect soldiers from the ennemy faction who use dangerous suicide cyber- soldiers full of explosives. The Andromech is controled by AI but can also be driven like a drone. They behave as scouts asked to clear first the ground of the most dangerous and the most offensive enemies or to analyze the battle zone before exoskeletons piloted by the human beings take action. Prime directive are also to protect the soldiers and the civilians of a battlezone at all cost. Inspiration from great artists like Ben Mauro, Aaron Beck, Vitaly Bulgarov, lots of japanese robots and a bit of ABC warrior from Judge Dredd movie
