I guess I should add more information:

Many of Firefox's services are anti-privacy, and while they can be turned off, it usually requires deep digging into about:config.

First: Firefox "phones home" (reporting your network location, username, etc to another computer) every time you open it and when you visit a webpage (sometimes even multiple times in a row). Basically, Firefox "phones home" all the time.

This can only be disabled in about:config. However, since you're probably a regular Firefox user, it has already "phoned home" many, many times.

Second: In addition to this, Firefox makes automatic connections to some of the websites you may visit, which does include their trackers. Weird thing is, sometimes Firefox doesn't do this at all, sometimes it does, even when you do something as simple as open a new tab. There doesn't seem to be a way to turn this off, not even in about:config.

Third: Google Analytics. Firefox does send analytics to Google, and Mozilla even stated it themselves. "But there's a way to opt out of this!" Yeah, but even then, it should've been an opt-in feature, not something to "opt-out" of.

Fourth: "Safe browsing". Used to "protect" you, but it still makes requests to Google every 30 minutes, creating a (unique) hidden cookie along with - surprise! - a POST request with your current version of Firefox. This can only be disabled in about:config.

Fifth: Firefox Health Report. Abbreviated FHR, this thing sends the following data to Mozilla:

Operating system (+ PC/Mac)

Number of processors

Your Firefox version

Number and type of addons

Luckily, you can disable this via the GUI.

Sixth: Firefox uses Google as its default search engine. And as we know, Google is very anti-privacy. Here's something from Richard Stallman's personal website if you want to read about it. Well, I mean, they started out with Google, then went to Yahoo! Search, and then back to Google.

Oh, and you probably shouldn't use DuckDuckGo, either. Use a searx/SearXNG instance whenever you can. For a less privacy-friendly search engine, you can use Ecosia. If you want to evaluate your options, refer to this guide.

Seventh: Firefox Pocket. This thing allows you to save any article, video or page from Firefox. It requires you to make an account. Mozilla collects "the URLs, titles and content of the web pages and other information you save to Pocket." (Direct quote from Pocket's privacy policy.) Here's more information about the information they collect. This can be disabled in about:config.

Eighth: Automatic updates. Installing new updates without letting you know, and who knows what kind of privacy košmaarid are in there? I don't even want to think about it.

So what other browsers are there?

Several! Some are even Firefox-based.

Ungoogled Chromium - This is what I personally use. It's Chromium, but de-Googled. It's good, but may be hard to compile depending on your operating system;

GNU IceCat - Fork of Firefox; versions prior to IceCat 60 had some privacy issues, but version 60 does not have them. May be a bit confusing to some users;

Iridium Browser - Fork of Google Chrome. Phones home to Google, but this can be disabled. Just be sure to turn off your internet connection before you run it;

LibreWolf - Another Firefox fork. Makes some calls to two addresses, it seems, but it can be disabled via about:config;

Otter Browser - For those who like Opera's "Presto" (v. 12.x) look. "Controlled by the user, not vice versa";

Or, you know, you could just use Opera 12.x

I obviously didn't list every single one of Mozilla's sins (that title belongs to this netizen), but if you're a Firefox user, you should really consider switching to a different browser.

Let me make clear that I am not saying we should pretend everything’s okay. It’s not, and the people who are saying “don’t let this become normal” are right.

The thing is, the nightmare worsens daily, and every single bit of it is all over the internet. It’s too much. I know I’m not the only one with mental health issues that are exacerbated by… well… the direction the USA is currently hurtling under the command of He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named and his cronies. (I’m calling him that now. Consider it black humor.) If I see it constantly, there’s a very good chance my brain will normalize it just out of fatigue.

So here are things I know so far about how to not have to see all of it every time I go on social media. (Word of warning: Anyone who gives me flak about what I filter out or why will be summarily blocked.)

First of all:

For Tumblr:

I myself use @new-xkit-extension​ to filter my feed. (Once it’s installed, open up the settings and add the Blacklist plugin to it. PostBlock and Mute are also good.) I know a lot of people swear by Tumblr Savior as well.

On mobile, XKit for iPhone exists as a paid app. Washboard is the only free solution I’m currently aware of, but I actually used it as a dash replacement on my laptop for a while and it’s quite nice. It can import XKit and Tumblr Savior blacklists as well.

For Facebook:

There are built in features for unfollowing people/pages without unfriending/unliking them, if you just need to not see the latest spiel from Great Uncle Hubert. And you can always hide individual posts. But sometimes… ya need more. So.

Social Fixer, bless them, has implemented both a keyword blacklist and a more complex filter system, including regularly-updated filters you can subscribe to. One is for politics.

I haven’t tried out the Chrome extension Remove All Politics From Facebook, as I am a Firefox fan, but it sounds blissful.

Those are my two main social media platforms. This means that, sadly, I do not know about filtering that may or may not be available for Twitter or any other platform really. I am sorry.

(I do think it would be cool if we had a massive “block Trump on Twitter” campaign—deprive him of an audience, he hates that—but as I barely use Twitter I am not the person who can lead that charge.)

How I Am Staying Informed Anyway (or trying to)

Well, I signed up for two mailing lists. One is the venerable Snopes, which will tell you the rumors and to what extent they are and are not true. The other is theSkimm, which is a bit ad-laden but boils the big national news stories down to something easy to understand—and fills in any important background, to boot. (They also link to their sources if you want to know more; a random-ish sample from the latest newsletter gave me Bloomberg, The Atlantic and The Washington Post. So their sources seem fairly reliable.)

What I have not been able to do is watch TV news or, as I found out the hard way this morning, listen to radio news. (If you have a radio alarm clock, take my advice and do not set it to NPR. I love NPR dearly, but I’m switching to an all-music station for waking up because I just cannot start my day with You-Know-Who’s latest shitshow.) I’m even loathe to read the newspaper at this point.

The weaker, buggier, inarguably worse browser. But Internet Explorer — developers loved that browser. And they wished those other browsers — the bad browsers — would just go away: uninstalled by a clever and widespread virus, banned by law, Netscape finally deciding to cut their shoddy rendering engine’s losses and switch to IE’s rendering engine, Trident — whatever — just make it go away. Those inscrutable Internet Explorer bugs didn’t happen by coincidence or negligence. They came about because Internet Explorer had won, and we loved it for winning.

See, our frustration and our anger lied to us, as they usually do. They told us that supporting those other, worse browsers didn’t just hold back our work, and didn’t just hold the web back, but it held us back, as developers. A waste of our goddamned time is what it was. So, we told ourselves that it wasn’t only for our own good, but for the good of the entire web.

We weighed IE just a little more heavily. We gave it just a little more say in our decisions. And so, holding so many chips, Microsoft played their cards accordingly — who could blame them? Everyone built websites for them first, and the others second. Their word wasn’t law, but it was certainly more than suggestion. Sure, they deviated from web standards here and there (just a little bit), but after all, wasn’t something implemented by The Biggest Browser a sort of de facto standard anyway? Besides, supporting the better, faster, easier browser was doing the web itself a service! Together with Microsoft, we were pushing the web forward! Everybody wins.

The rendering engine that powers Microsoft’s Edge browser today — EdgeHTML — is a fork of gnarly old Trident. It’s a stripped-down and vastly improved fork of Trident, for sure, but it isn’t, let’s say, universally judged on its own merit. The EdgeHTML team has always been working with a couple of disadvantages: the first was technical, in that it took a tremendous amount of time and effort to catch up with the likes of Safari, Firefox, and Chrome. The second was emotional. It was us — you and me — jaded from years of Internet Explorer, staring down a cheery blue lowercase “e” with cold disdain.

A few weeks ago, the Edge team announced that they’d soon be abandoning EdgeHTML in favor of Blink, the rendering engine that powers Chrome. With this change, the last few remaining embers of Trident will be snuffed out forever. The wish I’d shared with so many will finally be granted. Ironically timed — as it turns out — EdgeHTML was becoming a pretty solid rendering engine.

Blink is an open-source project led and governed by Google. It powers both Chrome and Opera, the latter of which similarly abandoned their home-grown rendering engine a few years ago.

By an overwhelming margin, Blink is (and will increasingly be) the way the web is experienced the world over. Blink is fast, stable, packed with modern features, and — by comparison to development for the still-evolving EdgeHTML — painless.

It may have happened too late to save us from those ancient IE bugs, but our work will be easier now that there’s one less rendering engine to support. You and I will lose a little more of our collective “but does it work cross-browser” burden. Our projects will go more smoothly, and the web will lose just a little more of what was once holding it back.

As stewards of the engine powering so very much of the web, well, Google’s word won’t be law, but certainly more than suggestion. And maybe over the course of the next few years, they’ll deviate from web standards here and there (whether intentionally or accidentally) in the tiniest of ways. But after all, isn’t something implemented by The Biggest Browser a sort of de facto standard itself? Besides, how could you argue? Favoring the better, faster, more powerful browser is doing the web itself a service, after all. Together with Google, we’ll be pushing the web forward. Everybody will win.

That is, as long as little standards deviations and tiny, nagging bugs don’t grow bigger over time — thanks to the twin forces of entropy and complacency. Unless the decisions we’ve made for the good of the web (hand-in-hand with a notoriously privacy-hostile advertising company) begin to feel a little darker, and a new bogeyman begins to take shape in our minds — unless we find that our old fears and frustrations have risen again (like a phoenix that renders a couple hundred pixels away from where it should and flickers in a weird way when you scroll).

It doesn’t take much imagination to see newer, more exciting rendering engines appearing over the next handful of years. It takes just as little imagination to see them failing due to lack of support, as we favor “the-browser-that-everyone-uses-first” by choice, and later perhaps in grudging service of “the bottom line”.

Again, though, I don’t know. I’ve never seen this happen with a rendering engine myself. I’ve just heard the whole story, and I only know first-hand how it ends. I know the ending from the ache of old psychic scars; from an involuntary flinch at some bits of code, and muscle-memory that compels me to avoid others. I know it from the jokes in conference talks that always felt a little tired, but still resonated just the same in a way I wouldn’t allow myself to admit and still spoke to a secret wish that I held deep in my heart. A bitter, hateful wish.

But hey, listen. Not anymore. Now, I mean — I would never. I really do love a good rendering engine bug, now. I do.

Welcome To Your New Toronto Realty Blog!

Well, first thing’s first – how the hell am I going to write my “teaser” in one or two short lines?  Brevity has never been, nor ever will become, an attribute of mine.  That space above the fold was always my opportunity to lead, engage, attract, tease, trick, or regale!

Alas, I’ll just have to make do with a smaller introduction which makes the whole site look a lot cleaner!

And that’s really what the new layout was about; making things look a bit cleaner.

Or should I say, a little more 2018, and a little less 2006.

I’ve never been one to accept change.

Whether it was moving houses when I was 12-years-old (even though I was moving to a house twice as large, in a better area), or switching from a Blackberry to an iPhone (why did I wait so long?), or downloading the MLS app on my phone and scrapping the keychain-authenticator (I was the very last TREB agent to do this), or even switching from a paper/padfolio day-planner to an online calendar…………which I have yet to do…

…I have never been good with change.

My beloved Toronto Realty Blog, which many of you might find zero fault with, has looked old, stale, and outdated for quite some time.

I brought a new layout online in the summer of 2016, but as I was told by many, it was basically just the same red and white version iteration as before, with a few subtle changes, a bit of moving column A to column B, and removing the disastrous colours in the “TRB Channels” I had below the fold.

I suppose I’ve come a long way since 2007.

Here’s my very first masthead:

And then my “updated” second version:

Wow, they’re just, like, so different!

But that is what used to represent change to me.

I started the blog in June of 2007, and within months, I already had major formatting issues.

On Internet Explorer (this was before Google Chrome and Firefox got a bigger market share, not to mention Mac users), which back at the time represented about 60% of my users, the masthead would not display properly, and was actually showing at the bottom of the blog……….for about 12 months.

Yes, 12 months.  Before I finally thought, “I wonder if anybody other than the guy I found on Craigslist, and paid $500 to, could work on my website.”

The masthead and the menu bar running across the top of the home page were both lost below sea.  But it didn’t seem to matter, because my following was somewhat underground back then.  People seemed to like the imperfection of the site, as it almost underscored how rare it was to find a licensed real estate agent opining about shady developers, or misleading sales tactics.

But eventually, as I said, I had to get the site fixed.

And that’s where the beautiful second version of TRB, that you see above, came into play.  Oh, just so different from the first!  But at least everything was in the right place.

And this was well before you’d ever access a website on your phone.  My 2008 Blackberry could barely load the blog.  All the users were on desktops.

But the second version was cleaner overall, and oh – the new logo!  Yes!  I finally decided to scrap the puffy, orange, first-font-I-randomly-chose lettering, and get a logo.

I had this idea that I was “putting my stamp” on the city, and I thought this looked really cool:

Just as my Mom told me I was cool in Grade 9, when I sat home instead of going to parties, I told myself this was cool in 2008-09 when I had some random part-timer in my office draw it, likely in Paint.

It wasn’t until the summer of 2013 that I made another change.

Raise your hand if you’ve been around since this version:

In hindsight, it looks awful, right?

But at the time, it was supposed to be a “window into my mind.”

Coffee, a blackberry, keys on the desk, and old-fashioned paper day-planner, all strewn across a hardwood floor, in a city where everybody seemed to be obsessed with hardwood floors.

The “Top Posts Of The Month” was a leading feature, since I was starting to see 20-30 comments with regularity, and I felt that more people were coming back to read what others were saying.

Eventually I grew tired of this, and wanted something cleaner, which was ironic, given the whole idea behind this layout was to “jazz it up.”

When I launched the new version somewhere around 2014, I was surprised by the response!  Readers were actually telling me they like the old version, which made me realize that I wasn’t the only one averse to change.

The new version was cleaner, and easier to navigate, with way more features, and it had multiple ways to find the same thing, no matter what you were looking for.

But as I would soon learn, and as I fully expect with today’s new launch, readers just don’t like change!

So compare this to the wood-flooring-version, and how can somebody say they don’t like it?

Well, like I said, the consensus always seems to be, “What you had before was fine.  Why bother changing?”

Then in 2016, for some odd reason, I decided to launch a “new” layout, that was more of the same:

That’s the site you all knew and (hopefully) loved, until this week.

Boy, it really really was similar to the 2014 version.

In any event, this time around, I really wanted to get with the times.

I wanted something that made me uncomfortable, and I found it during my first meeting with my team – when I said, “Not a chance,” and walked out.

And that’s when I knew it made sense.

I had to change.  I had to get more modern.

And I had to risk being “too salesy,” as a close friend of mine called the mock-up when I showed it to him two months ago.

But you know what?  It’s out of necessity.

Would you believe it if I told you that many people who email me don’t know I’m a real estate agent?

True story.

I get a slew of emails every week, and not just from buyers and sellers who want to be come clients.  I get at least 2-3 people who are looking to get into real estate and want advice, I get 2-3 people who had interesting experiences in real estate and want to share, I get 2-3 people who know I’m a real estate agent, and used another agent for their transaction, but are really hoping I’ll spend some time to consider their situation and give them advice, and then, above all else, I always get at least one email from somebody who needs my help, pleads with me to call or email, and then is surprised to find out I’m a real estate agent.

Just last Friday, I spoke to a woman who was asking for advice on two condos in her target area, and eventually said, “My Realtor thinks the maintenance fees aren’t a problem in either building.”  I told her, “You should have mentioned you’re working with a Realtor, because I don’t want to interfere.”  She said, “Oh, I didn’t know you were a Realtor.”

Yes.  Really.  This does happen.

So because I knew I was going to write this blog when the new site launched this week, I asked her, “What did you think this site was?’

She said, “Well, I was just Googling ‘maintenance fees’ and I found it, so, I dunno, I guess I thought it was like a public support page?”

What the hell is a public support page?  Is that even a thing?

So yes, you could label TRB V6.0 “more salesy,” but not because I am trying to attract more business, but because I think people should know who I am, what I do, what services I provide, etc.  Just like any business, selling any good or service.

But that’s just me being self-conscious.  Overall, I love the new look and feel.  It’s very modern, sleek, dare I speak the over-used buzz-word, “sharp,” and above all – clean.

The blog itself won’t change in format.

New posts will still be published every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, with Pick5 on Thursday.

The big changes are in the form of additions to the site, specifically new features.

First and foremost, we have a listings portal.  This is, like what you will find online, 100% up-to-date and complete.  And like what you will find online – it doesn’t take 24 hours to populate new listings, like the archaic www.realtor.ca that CREA shoves down our throats.

It’s a pretty sad state of affairs when a wee-blogger like myself has new listings posted before our public MLS, but that’s a topic for another day.

The listings will have sales trends for each neighbourhood and/or building in which that listing resides, as well as amenity information, open house info, etc.

I’ve also scrapped a few features, starting with “ASK TRB,” which was my previous brainchild, thinking that readers would take the opportunity to start their own thread.  But as you saw from last Friday’s blog about “MLS Musings,” when the readers want to start a thread – they just do it in the current blog!

I also scrapped the “Featured Listings,” ie. the Hot House of The Week, Hot Loft of The Week, etc.  I deliberately have not updated this section since January, because I wanted to see how long it would take for a reader to email me, since readers will literally email me when I’ve used a semi-colon incorrectly.  But guess what?  Nobody emailed me!  So it’s like I thought: nobody uses that feature.

Many of the regular readers will be VERY happy to see that I’ve re-ordered the comments section, so that the first comment appears, well, first, and subsequent comments below.  This was a major sticking point back in the summer of 2016 when I first launched, although part of me thinks you’ll all be so used to it, that you’ll complain now that I’ve switched it back.

But the big addition to TRB is something that no other real estate agent in Toronto can offer.

I call it the “Data Hub.”

Let’s say that I wanted to know the average price of a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom, semi-detached house that sold specifically in the “Danforth Village” community of TREB District “E03,” between January 1st, 2018, and March 31st, 2018.

Right now, I would go to the back-end of MLS (which of course you guys don’t have), and I would search accordingly.

I would then copy and paste all those sales into Microsoft Excel, clean the data and use the AVERAGE function on the “Sold Price” column.

That’s a lot of work.

And it’s work that you guys can’t do.

But what if you could?

Folks, let me introduce you to the TRB Data Hub.

I will admit that the functionality takes some getting used to (ie. holding CTRL to select multiple sections, using the map versus using the auto-complete for areas, etc), but give it a shot, and play around with it.

Over the next two months, I want you guys to use this feature, and give me your feedback.

As it stands now, we have only “Beds,” “Baths,” and “Parking” for the drop-down options, but as I said – we’re working on it.

We plan to add features as we move along, but wanted to get this launched for you folks to play around with.

As cheezy as this might sounds, I view Toronto Realty Blog as a community that I have built over eleven years, and many of the readers and users have been around for a long, long time.  I value the input of the readers more than you’ll ever understand.  I might write the blogs, but it’s the users that truly make TRB all that it is.

So that’s it, folks.

I welcome your feedback, even if you liked the previous version more, which is what everybody has said after every change.
