I’ve mentioned before that it took me over twenty years before I let any of the Newsies OCs that I’d made up out of my head and into the world.  There’s a lot I could go into about some of the whys of that, about the 1990s and girl power and the fear of creating Mary Sues back when that was a dread insult, and if anyone were terribly interested in that I could share my thoughts.  But my point for now is that even if it took more than two decades of daydreaming, I’m so glad I finally did it.  I’ve been rereading all of V New Yorku (a clear endorsement of the principle of writing what you want to read) and I’m so pleased by it all.  It’s not without flaws, but I love my girls and their stories, and I’m proud of what I’ve been about to learn and discover for them and because of them.  Romance is a major focus of the series, but I hope it’s obvious that the other relationships in it are just as important—I’ve noticed in my reread the growth of the friendship between Pauline and Hana, but there’s also the mentorship that Judith gives to Les (and Medda gives to Judith), the fraternal antagonism between Skitts and Shiv, and the admiration Gussie has for Tumbler and Blink, to name a few.  Hana and Pauline and Judith and Gussie and even May are all three-dimensional and well-rounded; they feel like real people, and like they belong in the same world that the boys do.  That’s something that’s always been important to me, and therefore something I’m proud of having achieved.  I’m just having a really good time reading and thinking about them and I’m glad they exist.

What music does Neville listen to while he tends to his plants? 🌱

Broadway Musicals. He likes to listen to something with some pep, so he generally jams out to Hairspray, Chicago, and of course, Little Shop of Horrors. 

Seamus introduced him to Broadway during Sixth, always humming them in the shower, until finally Neville asked why he was singing about “Cicero and Lipschitz.” He memorized the whole track, especially Cellophane

His students hum along with him sometimes. They think it helps the plants grow, bigger, stronger, taller. One day, one of his favourites brings him the sheet music for Wicked. “Its about witches in school!” she had exclaimed excitedly.

Neville couldn’t wait to bring the piece home to his amazing and musically talented boyfriend, Blaise. He had never heard a song more beautiful, one that made him feel so many different things at once.

april 29th of last year, i sat down and summed up the courage to make this blog. i was a nervous string bean then and had no idea what would come of it, but i was hopeful anyway, for a change. i got that change. i got one of the wildest years of my life, and i got to spend it with some of the most amazing people. i’m not going to lie, you guys: 2017 was hard on me. i lost my best friend to suicide in september. i came out to my family. i started seeking treatment for my dysphoria and ptsd. i started making huge life changes and so much of it was scary, so much of it left me feeling lost --- but i always had a place to come back to.  i can’t thank you all enough for being here this past year. picking up sonny as a muse helped me in ways i can’t even explain. my mental health is at the highest point it has ever been, despite this year’s hardships. i enjoy writing again. i enjoy my friends, my family more. life is hectic but it’s good and so many of you helped cultivate that. you encouraged me, stood by me, did silly little things with me when i was struggling internally. i’m blessed to know you guys, to call you friends or even just acquaintances.  thank you for being here. thank you for having me. i especially want to thank those who joined the bullpen discord; you guys have been like a small family to me and i can’t even begin to talk about how much you’ve all made me a better person. bless each and every one one of you. i mean it when i say i wish the best for you. here’s to a year of heartbreaks, laughter, and love.  thank you, from the entirety of my heart. - sunny.
