something that rly grinds my gears in theatre is when choices are made solely based on time period. and not including themes, symbolism, yk the actual Meaning of the show alongside its true-to-context setting.

take gatsby for example. you can either go “okay it’s in the 1920s in these parts of new york so we’re gonna have super glitz and glam here here and here” or. or.

you can say “okay well we know that for jay and daisy, their wealth came from other people’s downfalls (daisy through turning down jay and jay through wolfshiem’s deeds) and their status and class privilege is represented through myrtle getting hit by the car right. so let’s make that the entire setting of the play, disguised by glitz and glam. let’s make the entire set shiny and pretty and have those shiny and pretty things actually be smashed-up car parts, meaning the car accident is ‘happening’ the whole play, while still upholding the illusion of new money glam”. do u get me.

And when Buck says he didn’t have to, Tommy just shrugs and says he wanted to. Like it was easy. Like he didn’t just deal with cross town traffic in the middle of the most miserable rainstorm they’d had in a while simply because Buck had complained in the text about how cold he was. And then later when Buck puts it on he sees KINARD on the back and beams some more.

hello ro jeyneofpoole boatgirl. The fitzjames news has rocked my world and rotted my brain because I love a historical mystery solved. As a AMC terror and a real life terror fan, what texts would you recommend to someone who just watched amc terror and now wants to read the research on the real thing

i love love love when i get this question ok. if your first exposure to the franklin expedition was the terror i think your best jumping-off point is michael palin’s erebus: the story of a ship. yes he’s the guy from monty python, no he’s not a professional historian, but it’s entertaining and well-researched and a great way to familiarize yourself with the general concepts that other more elaborate texts will touch on. then you just GOTTA read dr. owen beattie’s frozen in time, it’s one of the most iconic pieces of franklin literature and the descriptions of the beechey exhumations are so near and dear to me. some of the lead stuff is on shaky legs now, but this book was revolutionary for the longest time. then there’s may we be spared to meet on earth edited by russell a. potter et. al., which is a collection of letters to and from members of the franklin expedition. after you’ve read the others listed here you’ll be crazy enough to cry over this one.

a more niche read that i just finished was david murphy’s arctic fox, which is a biography of leopold mcclintock and his arctic career. it’s super compelling and mcclintock lived a very interesting life and seemed like a pretty okay guy especially for the time; murphy does a really good job and i don’t see this one recommended at all but it’s actually good. there are some minor issues with some little details surrounding, like, the peglar papers, for example, but that’s what the other books are for. honorable mentions include (ie they’re on my shelf staring me down) ice ghosts by paul watson, unraveling the franklin mystery: inuit testimony by david c. woodman, the man who ate his boots by anthony brandt, james fitzjames: the mystery man of the franklin expedition by william battersby, and icebound in the arctic by michael smith. but do NOT and i mean do NOT under any circumstances read dan simmons’ absolute drivel that novel isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. just watch the show and read these. ok love you byeeeee

Okay so I was looking at a picture I have on my refrigerator. My youngest made a Christmas ornament on paper and her teacher stuck a tiny copy of her school picture on it (I know some schools do that- the teachers get little copies of the pictures, or digital ones). Now when the kids were still in the swamp they definitely didn’t order school pictures. If they managed to come home with the order form, Ness cut out the little sample picture and labeled it with the kid’s name and school year. But if they made a craft at school, he carefully preserved them and kept them safe. He was so proud of those grainy little pictures of his babies with their faces as clean as they got and their clothes relatively neat.

Once they were older he definitely ordered the pictures, but a small part of him really wishes he could have them all.

Ice hears Mack talking about it once when they are all laughing at baby pictures of Bradley. He knows he can’t do anything about baby pictures, but he starts pulling strings and gets access to all 6 of the Seresins’ school pictures.

For Christmas he gives Jake a photo album that starts with a scowling Ness, absolutely filthy, with a caption “Tennessee Seresin, kindergarten.” The pictures are in chronological order, adding the younger chickens as they started school.

You know he bought all the pictures he could once he had the money, but that just means he naturally has more of Mack and the twins. Jake feels so ridiculously bad about that.

He thinks Ree and Gunny got the worst version of him in those early years. He didn't know how to shave so he taught himself and then taught them the same shitty version. He couldn't tie a tie to save his life. He didn't know what he was doing with the bills and the odd jobs he could find, and he blames himself so much for how Ree and Gunny missed out on him being a decent parent, at least when they were small.

Ree and Gunny think this line of thinking is bullshit.
