How it feels when you've been in a toxic fandom for a very long time and then you join/come back to a non-toxic one

One of my students (an autistic 10 year old) has been experimenting with animation on youtube and it's just the greatest journey of watching him figure out what he's doing... he started with rapidfire premade animations and then started making still scenes that flashed quickly and then... and then...

30 seconds of white screen

30 seconds of black screen

30 seconds of rainbow screen

And it's beautiful to watch him discover all the things he can do. Because then it became rainbow flashing animals and then alphabet lore and then, bit by bit, actual stories.

His favorite current story is to have himself swallowed by a giant sea creature and then pooped out because, well, he is a 10 year old boy but he also made this one little animation that was a parody of a slime video getting interrupted by a dinosaur and that was amazing.

He made an alphabet lore video using Korean characters.

This is a 10 year old boy who's taught himself to write in Ukrainian, Korean and Spanish as well as memorizing greetings in around 8 languages and he might not always do school work but that brain is never quiet and I just... I love watching him and how he's figuring things out and there are so many people who don't get it, who don't see the brilliance of what he's figuring out all on his own.

The world might not always see him but I always will.

Amazing World of Gumball

I love the way that over the course of the show gumball goes from a clueless but well meaning kid with a touch of murphy's law, to just a straight terrible, overly sarcastic, selfish, actively going out of his way to make other people's lives worse, person. Like from season 2 onwards the show never misses an opportunnity to just remind you that yo this dude is a bad person but he'll pull through if he has to I guess. And I love that so much.

We need more just blatantly terrible people as protagonists.

Amazing world of gumball is just Always Sunny for kids.

34. What's your book/movie/tv guilty pleasure

I don't know if anyone here is aware of the After movies, but they are my ultimate guilty pleasure.

For anyone who doesn't know: 'After' was a Harry Styles/One direction Wattpad au back in the day. Eventually it actually got published (the names were changed obviously) and i think it wound up being like an 8-book series. And like...we love fanfic you guys. But this was like...listen it was good enough to be published, I guess, so who am I to say. But it was one of those fics where Harry Styles was just like, toxic, alcoholic, wall-punching, womanizer bf.

So that's your context.

They were eventually made into movies. and I distinctly remember coming across the trailer as like a Youtube ad and I laughed out loud I could not believe it. The movies are like...so funny. I love these movies in a way that started as ironic but like...it's part of my birthday tradition that my friends and I get together and play a drinking game where the only rule is that you drink whenever someone says. Like, the only rule is that when you see something ridiculous, you call it out and we all drink. To give you context for this, my favorite rules that get called out every time are "drink because Noah is gay" "drink if you think Noah is absolutely fucking her mom" (these seem contradictory but they aren't and you just have to trust me on that) (also everyone is so drunk by After 2 that we rarely make it past that)

Now, the first two movies at least have coherent plot, but after that they absolutely run off the rails and get so absurd that they don't even really follow any traditional plot structure.

Another fun fact about this is that in my first year out of college, my best friend and I lived in these shitty apartments and there was a drug dealer who lived below us.

ANYWAY the After movies. So these were like, not theatre release movies. I think the first two were Netflix originals, but I'm not sure. For the third one though, there was a limited release in theatres and it happened to be showing in a theatre near us. My excitement could not be measured. I bought the tickets ahead of time, I was so fucking excited. This was the most amazing thing ever. So so fortunate for me.

As we're getting ready to go to the movie there are gunshots outside of our apartment. We panic, we run into my room and lock the door. We call 911. We wait 20 minutes. The cops don't come, but there are also no more gunshots. My roommate/best friend is freaking out and I say ".....I still want to go to the movie" she looks at me like I'm insane, I probably am.

We go to the movie. It's so bad, it's amazing. We cannot stop laughing, everyone else in the theatre hates us. We have the best time. Afterward, we hear these two guys in the back and one of them asks the other "have you read the books? they're so good!" (they do not know the fanfic lore) We laugh our asses off.

We never saw the drug dealer guy again RIP.
