You know sometimes i like using my tumblr as like a brain rot bank? Like a time capsule for thoughts and opinion that cater to no one but everyone is welcome to enjoy and partake. And today i'll be doing just that because i have finally finished The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. If you've been following me for a while you know that this is lowkey monumental because (a) it means that i have officially played all Ace Attorney games, and (b) i have been struggling to finish these two games since their bundled release three years ago. So, i just wanted to share some general thoughts, some tier lists, and feel free to let me know what you think if you read what i have to say!
Tumblr media
Ok so, my main takeaway from playing the two games is that... Dr Courtney Sithe is a bad bitch deserving of the same praise as Franziska, Lana Skye, Justine Courtney, Dee Vasquez and Calisto Yew. I genuinely love her so much. Miss Buttplug Hair got her PhD in being a girlboss and i'm so upset she was only in one case. For such a cool character with an amazing design, she was criminally underdeveloped. Same goes for my other fav, Rei Membani. Soon as it was mentioned that Professor Mikotoba and Judge Jigoku were on their way to the UK, i was one hundred percent sure she'd accompany them, and i was ultimately disappointed. To have her right next to Susato on the game's cover art and give her such an amazing takedown of Raiten Menimemo... and then just not have her be anywhere else was such a shame. I need more Dr Sithe and Rei !
The rest of the games' characters were a bit of a mixed bag with some obvious (and some unexpected) stand-outs. Here's my tier list:
Tumblr media
Notes:
The biggest surprise that came when i was making this is how high i placed Herlock. I started off hating him so much and then he just suddenly grew on me so quickly, i hadn't even noticed. One of my favourites for sure.
I think we can all collectively agree that we have, at some point in our lives, embodied Pop Windibank... poor guy...
I don't know what Kazuma's deal is. He starts off as Ryunosuke's Mia Fey before um... just becoming a jerk? Why does he have beef with his best friend who was literally mourning him for almost a year? Can't lie though, the bitch looks hot in his white uniform.
Some of the jurors made a bigger impression than actual characters/ witnesses, just by having cool designs. Mainly the green lady, who rightfully earned her spot in the third tier after i found out she's supposed to be a reincarnation of the teacher from PLvsPW !
Tumblr media
Eggert Benedict or whatever the fuck that rich breakdancing asshole is called, cannot be a final villain i'm sorry. Seriously, what were they thinking?
The two redheads are such a shameless rip-off of the Skulkins. Two ruffians taking the witness stand for the game's climax AGAIN !? And during the credits, they pose in their prison cell with "Gossip" in the middle the exact same way Eggert and the Skulkins did in the credits of Adventures, like no thank you.
I love how my overall bottom 3 are an annoying str*ight couple and a child.
If Stronghart wasn't in the second (very coveted) tier, he'd be in the bottom of 'like !' because he was ok. It's blatantly obvious he's the big bad from the second he's introduced but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Also, i need him and Damon Gant to have a fat titty bounce-off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moving on to criticisms, i can't help but feel like the fact that Shu Takumi decided to split his original script into two games only served to hurt the entire project. Because, for starters, each game has a different feel and the two don't match. Adventures is reminiscent of PLvsPW, Takumi's whimsical and eccentric love letter to the UK that hinges heavily on exposition. Resolve, on the other hand, is a bit of a mix between its predecessor and traditional Ace Attorney, its cases focusing more on driving the narrative to its conclusion rather than experimenting on the classic formula (as with the first game). It also echoes aspects of the first Investigations, bringing in diplomatic immunity, international relations, "tracking down and going against the head of the evil organisation" (the Reaper storyline is very similar to the Yatagarasu one). Personally the two vibes don't mesh, even when Resolve tries to latch onto Adventures with Memoirs of the Clouded Kokoro, for example.
Then, the pacing in both games is all over the place. Adventures is just so unreasonably and unashamedly long-winded and slow, it's the reason it took me literally three years to get into it. The game repeats the same lines of dialogue again and again until they're made painfully clear, subsequently making the player (or at least me) feel like an idiot who needs to read the same thing 13 times in order to get it. This, coupled with the fact that actual gameplay was almost nowhere to be seen and that progression in the courtroom almost always relied on not pointing out inconsistencies but pressing the witnesses adjacent to the one testifying, made the game such a slog to get through. And once the game started to pick up, it was over before i even knew it and in a very unceremonious fashion no less. In comparison, Resolve is very streamlined, albeit a bit too fast-paced. With the exception of Memoirs, which felt like shameless filler, it's clear that they wanted to waste zero time and crammed so much stuff into the episodes, to the point where it became difficult to keep track of everything going on. Because, keep in mind, the second game was tasked with tying up all the loose threads from the first one.
This leads to my final criticism regarding the split: inconsistencies and unresolved mysteries. I think it reads as careless writing when questions keep sprouting everywhere and their answers are reserved for the final two episodes of the second game. Even Unspeakable, a final case, introduces mysteries tied to the overarching narrative just for them to be shelved until Twisted Karma, leaving the player with a sense of dissatisfaction when the game ends. Not only is it frustrating to keep track of all the unsolved mysteries, a chore which good writing would not expect from the player, but it also has you questioning whether or not some of them will get answered at all. Why was the selection of jurors obviously rigged? Why did Van Zieks stop appearing in court five years prior? Where did he lose his gun in Twisted Karma? Why didn't Stronghart assassinate Madame Tusspells as well? Why is Kazuma fully exonerated after admitting to his involvement in the assassin exchange? I grouped the unresolved mysteries with inconsistencies as one problem because the latter is a result of the former. The majority of mysteries spills over from the first game to the second, giving way to different phrasing, details getting glossed over and the plot's consequences getting ignored. There's a very apparent shift in Gregson's character, for example, going from uncooperative and rigid in Adventures to more forgiving and helpful in Resolve, all the while his misconduct from Unspeakable is seemingly forgotten and met with zero ramifications. There's also the government's secret message about the assassin exchange Herlock deciphered at the end of the first game, which sets up the second game nicely but then doesn't get mentioned until the very last day in court. Like, come on now. It feels like Resolve continues Adventures' story without wanting to acknowledge it because, in the grand scheme of things, McGilded and Eggert Benedict seem to not matter at all. And then there's Memoirs, which... Inconsistency City, honestly. This episode's lack of impact on the overall story allowed it to be literally anything else. It's such a bizarre choice to have it be something which only achieves in taking away from the first Clouded Kokoro case! Like ok, i can get behind it being a case no one wanted to talk about so it didn't make the first game. I can turn a blind eye to the inconsistent character development and timeline, whatever. But it absolutely drives me nuts that, for an Ace Attorney game where the murders are explained in full detail, they couldn't stay consistent with the direction Olive Green was walking in. Hate. Loathe. Get it away from me.
That pretty much covers it in terms of complaints, because otherwise i enjoyed my playthrough quite a bit actually. I know i've just spent like 3 mega-sized paragraphs complaining but the games have great elements as well. The Deduction dances are easily the best thing about the gameplay, especially when you didn't see them coming. They were so much fun to play, very animated and cartoony with amazing banter, and effortlessly accelerated the investigation segments. Equally, i loved Judicial Findings. Undoubtedly my favourite part of the courtroom sections and a welcome change of pace. I tended to stall a lot because the jury's music fucks so hard. While on the topic of what i liked, Ryunosuke and Susato's chemistry rivals what Phoenix and Maya have going on. Susato leaving at the end of Adventures was a genuinely effective point in the plot, even though i knew she'd be back.
Now, let's take a closer look at the episodes. Here's my overall tier list of all Ace Attorney cases, the Great Ace Attorney ones being highlighted in yellow:
Tumblr media
Notes:
Blossoming Attorney gobbled the rest of the girls right up (a court-only episode, no less). They gave us Susato gameplay, what more can you ask for? An amazing case. Gay Women in STEM !!
Return kinda strikes a nice balance between the different feels of the two games i mentioned before. You've got exposition and world-building with the whole Great Exhibition, turn of the century mad science thing, but also classic Ace Attorney with tracking down Drebber (very Matt Engarde's apartment) and Madame Tusspells as just some witness (very Lisa Basil). A very fun case right before the clusterfuck of mysteries ensues. Also, Dr Courtney Sithe !!!!! Girl you're such a star and you don't even know it spit in my mouth
Was tempted to put Unspeakable in the second tier but i think it's earned its high placement on its own merit and not because of personal bias. It's a great case. Maybe not for a final one, but it's still great. It tries its hardest to tie up some loose ends before the game ends and that's worth something.
Resolve of Ryunosuke is objectively better than Twisted because i could not give less of a fuck about the purple guy's headache and Espella Cantabella selling firecrackers, but they're both very much one single package. Extra points to Resolve of Ryunosuke though for having its villain sit at the judge's seat. That was neat.
Tumblr media
The two Clouded Kokoros are giving stinky Bri ish culture with the whole apartment building background, like Ribena, bad teeth, rusty Union Jack, horseshit breath at the pub, you awrite luv? Slander, i'm sorry.
Slightly unrelated but when i was making this tier list it became so obvious that Investigations 2 is the crown jewel of the franchise. Like it has two cases in the top 5, how can you even argue against that?
Arriving to a conclusion, i'd say both games belong on the same level as Apollo Justice: a blend of good and bad. My experience playing the Ace Attorney franchise has followed this trend of attaching each game to a pivotal moment in my life. I finished the first game while i was still a soldier, Justice for All during my first year at university, Dual Destinies during Covid lockdown, Investigations while helping my parents set up their shop one summer. So i know i'll look back at playing The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles right after handing my dissertation very fondly. In other words, despite not quite sticking the landing, it's left a very pleasant aftertaste. Thank you for reading!

ok so that was an amazing first case! it has a great premise, it’s always fun where you get to play one of the principle non player characters for a bit, and also the more tutorialising aspects feel fitting for the scenario.
and what a cool scenario too! again it was very gratifying to play as susato AND we got to see her crossdress AND her best friend clearly has a crush on her. what more could I ask for?
I’ve talked about how I also liked jezaille brett returning not as the culprit but as the victim in this case. like not only does that set up immediately intrigue for returning players but it also serves to remind us there was still a lot of questions surrounding the case she was initially apart of that were never answered - and that we should keep in the back of our minds again for the rest of this game.
it does a great job at providing even more intrigue for what’s to come - my jaw was on the fucking floor during that last antechamber scene I can’t lie, there’s SO much to unpack holy shit.
and it did all of this while managing to remain simple and fast paced, which as I’ve expressed before, I think is what’s best for first cases. it kept the momentum going, allowing you just to deliver blow after logical blow. I had a lot of fun with it. this is now my favourite first case of the 3ds era and honestly it’s not even close. really good stuff!
also here’s the updated tier list peep the new category

TGAA visualization abilities headcanons
So, y'all know thing called aphantasia? Discovering it really made me think about the abilities of tgaa cast in how detailed can they imagine things. Like, actual pictures of objects. Aka the ability to imagine colour, shading, lightning, space. Hell, even the ability to spin it or something! (Which, as I understood, some people can't do at all)
Tumblr media
Here's some of my headcanons (POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD):
RYUNOSUKE, Susato, Iris, Klint, Lady B, Maria Gorey : Vivid, detailed imagination. At any point in time they can imagine a realistic cow spinning horizontally, and the cops can't stop them. And while some use this ability for inventing purposes, visualising how the finished product could work (Iris), others sometimes suffer from being squeamish and a scaredy cat in a sense (Ryunosuke). I mean, being able and sometimes not controlling what picture you see in your head could lead to thinking of less than savoury, spooky things. Sometimes rich imagination is someone's curse. KAZUMA, Herlock, Mikotoba, GENSHIN, Stronghart: Isn't as detailed and photorealistic as the previous category. Just simple, colored in shapes with basic shading MAYBE is mostly enough for them. Doesn't mean they can't spin a simple looking cow too in their mind- It's all really cut clean, sharp and straight to the point. Being able to see little hairs and blemishes on an imaginary person isn't important to them most of the time, anyway, so you won't catch them moaning about it. It's all about the base shape and movement and that's pretty much it. Ben, Jigoku, Hosonaga, Gina : The poor bastards don't even get the color and shading now. It's either a monochrome image or simple lines. They're not sad about that, per se, because what's enough is enough. The ability to recognize colors is there, so you can count on them to call grass green or sky blue, but coming up with images in their mind proves to look a little less saturated. BAROK, GREGSON: "What do you mean you can just imagine a fucking apple in your head?" A side note - Gregson and Barok having aphantasia isn't a sentence to them in a sense of their type of work. Rather than relying on photographic function of memory (that they lack) they memorize everything as a list of facts. + aphantasia doesn't stop them from recognizing people, suspects included, because they don't have prosopagnosia (difficulty with recognizing faces.)

oooooh did you ever keep playing dgs? absolutely no pressure if it's on indefinite hiatus or anything but i am fucking insane about susato and i think 2-3 does SO much for that. for. reasons
(2-3 is a extremely good case for other reasons as well but i think a lot of people underplay how much it does for contextualizing susato being susato because. man,)
I haven’t but I plan to!! I put it on pause bc I wanted to stream the whole thing with a specific group of friends, but then we all got super busy so it never panned out. Atm I’m booked with prepping for med school and moving apartments, so it’s still on the back burner, but it’s near the top of my list of things to finish up asap when I have time (along with Higurashi, 428 Shibuya Scramble, and Solatorobo).
Im even more excited to pick it up now tho bc SUSATOOOOOOOOOO ILY. It’ll be soon, though I can’t give an exact date bc my life has been a bit of a whirlwind recently

A second spooky oneshot for friends' suggestions and the yokai prompt of @susatosanhelp's prompt list!
Dodomeki are cursed women who turn into yokai because of their penchant for stealing. The concept of dodomeki Gina makes me insane and it's perfect and please scream about dodomeki Gina with me.
This one features ginahao (Gina/Haori) as a pairing, and can be read as ginasusahao (Gina/Susato/Haori).
CW: Some body horror elements (since this type of yokai involves body horror), though nothing overly graphic.
"…You ain't scared?"
'Ori and Gina sat on tatami in the Mikotoba guest room. Sooze should be here with them for the sleepover, but she was running late, talking with her dad. Couldn't blame her—Sooze had been through the wringer, lately. The fact that Gina had barged into their home that morning, screaming at the eyes lining her arms, those fucking eyes—certainly didn't help.
Little seemed to faze 'Ori, even as Gina slouched there in the dim light, still shaking. Gina liked her.
"I don't blame you. I'd be scared too, of course! If I woke up a dodomeki," 'Ori said, eyes wide. She took Gina's arm, covered with a loose kimono sleeve. "I need to know how this happened. I—I don't know how, but…there's got to be some way to help!"
She drew back the sleeve. Rows and rows of eyes glimmered back at her. Gina couldn't see through them, but they blinked of their own volition. They looked just like the eyes on her face; she may have calmed down since morning, but still, nothing stopped the chill, the sinking pit in her stomach.
"Is it true," Gina said "wot Sooze said? These 'dodomeki' are like, divers and thieves an' shit?"
'Ori nodded.
"Is it…my fault, then? Cos I'm a diver?"
'Ori, this sharp-as-a-knife bird, with her bright eyes—she was too pure, really. She sidled up to Gina, resting her chin on her shoulder. "Like I said, I don't know where this came from, but there has to be an explanation. A rational one, like Mikotoba-sensei said!
"And anyways," she continued, mumbling softly, "Enough about this being 'your fault.' You sound like Susato!"
Gina smiled at that. She leaned against 'Ori. The latter was warm, and she didn't flinch when Gina rested her arm on hers. And ya call us the dashin' ones.
When they awoke, a pink blanket reached up to their ears, scented with cherry blossom and tinged with 'Ori's light chemical scent.

Also I'm gonna try making one liveblog post again ‼ heres case 2 part 2
Was prompted to go into nikolina's cabin but I paused for a sec and sighed and panned to the right and there sholmes was hanging off of a desk bug like. It took several moments for me to gather the strength to engage with him
Sidenote I hate the new names for the Russian characters... pavlova? For real? What were their og names I'm gonna Google it
Ok borchevic isnt that much better but it's not fuckin pavlova!! So
Also I love the susato sprite where shes turned to look at something in the background with u... all the sprites of characters turning towards things of interest r so nice it rlly makes the space feel real. Adds on to the killer cinematography in here
Also also I need to get more like sholmes. This is a bad thing but at least he is not masking (I also dont do a lot of masking but I could do less of it)
DHHWJWJAK HIS FALLING ANIMATIOM IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY HIS BOXING ANIMATION.... he is so comical and animated I love it. Need that to be me
Hes so real for that tho. Singing is so fun if u keep me from singing I'll kill u dead
Also I love his little cap flip animation. A bit stupid but that's fine
(I already have plans to add a sholmes sticker to my laptop once I finish this game)
Everyone has headaches 🤨 I personally blame a gas leak. Those r always happening on old shit arent they
Nikolina has dresses n shit in her wardrobe she didnt before... what did she unpack or something ? Maybe the cat did it. So helpful
Also the bookshelf being in the cabin is so cool the way it's set into the wall like that... dream house feature. Fuck a pool I want a book hole
I like the solution to the locked room being the ship tilting that's nice and fun
'Isnt there anyone who can help me out of this mess' ryuu calls. Deep breath. Pan left. Sholmes is hanging off the coat rack
Love sholmes w the tiara... u just know iris has So much fun doing dress up w him and he is equally as delighted
IRELEVANT SNAKE???
Btw the logic and reason spectacular continues to fuck
Asougi on the floor during the spectacular.... :(
Also poor nikolina she seems so scared
Love how susato knows Facts and Knowledge... RIP girlie you would have loved pub quizzes
Ryunosuke naruhodou objectum ally... 'well if the teapot is her friend that's fine, we're all different' ryuu I trust u w my life
LOVE IT WHEN RYUU DOES THE SPECTACULARS hes getting in the facking groove!!!!!
Also love how smooth all the sprites r... the mocap so awesome
We need to get ryuu and susato some kittens.... they would love Cute Kitten Video Compilation
Sidenote I love asougi's shin things. Cunt-tastic
I have to say this is rhe first aa game that I'm not watching a playthru of or cheesing with a walkthru and I'm having fun yippee!!!
I do wonder how long the case is gonna be tho
The percussion in all this music is so awesome
Tumblr media
Wait hold on a sec. If ryuu was being framed then that means there was someone else who knew ryuu was stowing away
Sidenote but I've been wondering, what did ryuu tell his family about him going to London? Becauss it seems like literally only he and asougi knew if they weren't even letting susato in on it. Did he tell them he was going somewhere totally different? Did he just disappear? Is he now on the missing persons list? I mean I Guess he could be an orphan but theres that whole ryutarou thing and I'd imagine he would need at least one additional family member to pull that off
We need to get susato access to wikipedia I think she would love it
We also need to get sholmes access to a fidget cube
Ryuu? We can get him access to a nice hearty meal. He deserves it
Ryuu getting distracted by strogenov's beefy arms... 🤐🏳️‍🌈
Nikolina... she looks like a small sad kitten
Wahhhhhh asougiiiiii... so niceys to nikolina...
Whenverr they show asougi I get so sad.. . RIP gayboy I loved u
The final deduction of the wardrobe.... :(
:(
The music is fucking w me too...
I know she killed asougi but cant we let nikolina go.... everyone is being so hard on her she is 15
OH NOOOO SUSATO SAD.... :(((
SUSATO SMIIIIILE YAY :)
SUSATO SHOWING HER THROWS TO SHOLMES... :) friends

Since you were talking about games, I know you're also a Dai Gyakuten Saiban/Great Ace Attorney fan (so am I! I followed you originally because you're into both it and BSD hehe), and I'm curious to know your thoughts on it! 💖 Who are your favorite characters/relationships/cases/parts? (My fave character is Benedict/Graydon. Yes I have a tendency to become obsessed with minor characters no one else cares about, oops) Did you play it with the Chronicles version (I assume so, like most people did) or are you an og who followed along with the fan translation like I did? One of the best/funniest parts of getting into that duology was coming across Souseki and being like "if I had a nickel for every time I've encountered a piece of media that had an anime version of real-life author Natsume Souseki, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice" lmao 😭
Since they're two of my favorite media, sometimes I try to imagine how a BSD/DGS crossover would work, and which characters would get along, though granted the only things they really have in common are detective work/mysteries, an old-fashioned aesthetic, and some similar themes lol... I just really love both of them a lot 🥹💖 Ryuunosuke and Atsushi being the exasperated straight men to the genius comedy duo that is Sholmes and Dazai? lmao (also Iris and Kyouka and their bunnies 🥹)
I need to play Hatoful Boyfriend. I've played lots of visual novels but that one is still on my to-play list (I don't know how seriously I'll be able to take it with bird sprites instead of actual human facial expressions, even though I fully trust that it is as good as its reputation says it is, but I'll just have to see for myself lmao)
Hsjfdnvskdf ok so I don't know what keeps happening to me with TGAA because I love it so much but I can't seem to write proper meta on it so. I just keep reiterating how much I like it lol. I got into it a bit later - I knew it existed almost since it came out in Japan but since I hadn't played original Ace Attorney, I avoided it for a long time. Then I saw a playthrough of the fan translation Case 1 and was hooked. By that point, I knew there was going to be a full English release so I waited for that because I wanted so badly to play it through! It's such a good game.
Oh, Graydon was interesting. That case was really fun, if it weren't for the fact that I figured out the key evidence really early and I kept trying to present it too soon aojsbsidhb. Graydon as a character was great because he's exactly as he appears but then there's just that bit more that fleshes him out and made him the slightest bit more sympathetic while not detracting from his actions. He was cool. (I actually had an idea for an after trial fic with him and the Skulkins but I don't think I'll ever get around to writing it :/)
Oh yeah I flipped out when I saw Natsume - my whole brain stopped (this was before my BSD obsession btw so this was very strange to me lol) and I shrieked out "NATSUME SOSEKI???" and my mom from the other room was just "???". yeah. And then he showed up again in BSD and I just said "...hi Natsume".
My favourites are the Mikotobas! Both Susato and Yuujin! They're such sweet people aghhhhh they deserve the world. But I really love all the main cast tbh. Ryuunosuke is such a dork but there's real personality to him, Sholmes is the perfect adaptation of that character, Gina should get all the puppies and friends she wants, and though I have some mixed feelings on him, I hope van Zieks gets a fucking break at some point (or just keep friendly tormenting him. I think it's good for him actually. unlearn your prejudices and relearn how to smile, you edgy vampire man.). Kazuma's arc was excellent and I wish so badly we could've gotten a true reunion scene with less of the baggage... actually, thinking about Kazuma for too long makes me ill. You essentially watch him break in the middle of court and it sucks. It sucks man.
And Iris was a standout character to me because her archetype could've so easily been bland or annoying but instead she's a realistic kid who happens to be a genius and she's kind and gets sad and angry and has depth and I would give her a big hug.
In terms of case specific characters, I liked Haori/Rei a lot, just because her dynamic with Susato was so silly and she's a cool gifted forensics student! She's awesome! I want to see her again!
However, my favourite was Olive. OLIVE. I adore her and I adore the twist with her. God she's so passive aggressive. Like damn. Have I mentioned that I adore her character? If Olive has only 1 fan then I am that fan. I wished we had gotten to consult with her again, even though that wouldn't have made much sense... just because she was interesting to me and I would've liked to have seen her character more fleshed out.
I'd really love to see a lot of these characters again. I've seen some people talking about Kazuma Asougi Investigations but tbh I'd really like to see Susato Mikotoba Investigations with Haori and Yuujin helping out! It'd be neat to see more Meiji Japan and Susato continue to grow as a character in her own right, since she started that journey in Chronicles. Oh well. I know that's a pipe dream but still.
Omg omg so Iris and Kyouka was such a sweet mental image that I had to doodle it!
Tumblr media
I bet Kyouka would really find Iris's inventions fascinating and love to listen to how they work and stuff! I think they'd get along tbh. The idea of Sholmes and Dazai ever interacting terrifies me. Keep them away from each other. Please.
As for Hatoful, I am biased but I'd say it is well worth a playthrough. Given you like both DGS and BSD, I'd say you'll probably like it. My mom (who has also played it) and I were chatting about it recently and thinking that weirdly enough, BSD gives us a lot of the same vibes... like it's nowhere near identical, but that kind of desperate darkness where the characters are not who they appear to be at first and everyone has a different motive for doing what they do, but it's also not taking itself too seriously and it's still kinda silly... yeah. Same feel. It's better to go in with no expectations but I'm thinking of making a post later about why people should play that game... it's still one of my favourites of all time.
About the stock bird images: I know it's weird. I know it's weird that they're birds. But the best part of this game - to me, anyways - is that for as much as it is a gag, the story leans into it so heavily that you will quickly realize the main plot only makes logical sense if the main cast are birds and the player the only human. Like, it literally would not make sense otherwise. Please play it. It's wacky, it's zany, the characters have a good amount of depth, it's mildly traumatizing, it's one of the best things I've played and I feel it's become an inscrutable part of my identity. I am still obsessed with it many years later. That almost never happens to me. It's that good.
Agh this was long. I hope it wasn't overwhelming haha. Actually I'm curious: did you like Olive too? And/or what do you like about Graydon? :D
(Also if you ever decide to start Hatoful, please let me know your thoughts!!!)

Btw I don't actually disapprove of Ace Attorney hetships
I just demand they be GOOD
Like I think ultimately my reading of GAA is that Ryunosuke and Kazuma were a thing but it could never have lasted and anyway, Ryunosuke has to be fated to end up with a woman in some capacity bc he has descendants* and uhhh let's see, the age appropriate women in his life are
a murderous racist
recently happily married
recently bereaved
two goth freaks (affectionate) who are honestly the best romantic prospects out of this list (derogatory)
not Susato bc she's fucking 17
But the hetships in mainline Ace Attorney, y'all. As far as I can tell Edgeworth's most popular M/F pairing is his sister??? I get it, he's very easy to read as gay or aroace and that's gonna lead to het attrition but his sister. Can a man and a woman please just have a complex emotional relationship without it being a sex thing I'm begging
As of posting there are over twice as many Phoenix/Maya works on AO3 as there are of the correct (but extremely spoilery) Phoenix hetship, unfortunate. But at least there are more than the [EXTREMELY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER] Phoenix hetship so that's good
Let's see uhhh I don't like Mia/Diego bc I don't want to inflict Diego on a woman
Apollo has a few ladies in his life that would be a good fit, like Ema and Athena, so I'm cool with those. My reading of him is that he isn't ace but relationships aren't a high priority for him
Gumshoe and Maggey is a bit of an age gap and the subordinate thing is weird but in AAI she's not a direct report anymore so he could ask her out and they'd be two consenting adults so I guess it depends on the rendering
Anyway like. if you must make Ace Attorney straight. at least make it worth my time
*In Ryunosuke's case making it gay means making it sad and let's be realistic I don't think Capcom is going to put the franchise's first real trans character in the Meiji era of all places?

also inspired by penny parker’s ace attorney liveblog on here, I decided to do a character tier list! I’ll add to it once I start playing tgaa 2. some explanations under the cut
sholmes and iris
honestly I felt pretty unsure about the both of them when I first started the game. I like the few holmes stories I’ve read well enough and obviously have massive respect for their impact on literature and like the character fine but I’m not someone where “holmes is a character in this story!” is a selling point. and when sholmes was first introduced he was fun but his presence also felt kind of invasive. I also found the deduction scenes to be even slightly tedious at times honestly. but by god the way they portray him he just… wore me down lmao. by case 5 I found him fucking hysterical and was enjoying every minute he was on screen. and his relationship with iris gives him a surprising emotional core.
speaking of iris, I also felt hesitant at the whole “what if watson was actually a 10 year old girl” shtick and that brand of “child genius” character tends to annoy me most of the time. but fuck she’s just so immediately loveable. she still feels like a 10 year old despite being written to be a genius and is just truly so kind and sweet and she deserves the world. she’s so smart and curious about the world but she’s also still very naive and vulnerable in a lot of ways and it very literally makes me want to take a bullet for her. I think the idea that she writes the sholmes stories and they’re actually fictional retellings of her father’s diary entries is really cool too. it adds an extra layer that’s more than just “the holmes stories are real in this universe” which I enjoy
susato and van zieks
I’m hoping they’re both going to be in “would take a bullet for” category by the end of the next game but as it stands I feel like there’s a lot about the both of them that remains to be seen. like comparing them to maya and edgeworth at the end of aa1 and the journey we get to go on with those two characters, it feels like I barely know anything about susato and van zieks in comparison. and I am expecting to find out more, I mean… why does susato know about the hound of baskervilles is definitely playing on my mind and van zieks has his whole reaper thing going on as well as the “japan has betrayed me” thing he’s alluded to however of course none of these things have actually been explored yet and I feel a little emotionally distant from them as a result. susato and ryunosuke’s friendship is really sweet though if we get to see more of that I don’t think it’ll be long before she’s bumped up honestly. I also think van zieks is extremely cunty as you all know keep it up king.
ashley graydon
tbh I was so ready to say I just straight up hated this guy and put him in boo 🍅🍅 because he just… refused to take the L and people somehow kept siding with him without much logical reason to do so and it pissed me off… but they just had to make him interesting and throw in themes of the corrupting force of wealth and becoming the very thing you hate right at the very end. very dorian grey of him, just like his character design
taketsuchi auchi
the payne bit feels pretty played out at this point honestly and it feels considerably less charming whenever it’s coming from someone who isn’t actually my boy winston. so auchi just kinda annoys me
if anyone wants me to explain any of my other choices I’d be happy to!

30. Pick a favourite clown from the series 🤡
Ok ok for literal clown gotta go with my rainbow girl Geiru Toneido and her titty-suspenders-slapping gif
Like look at this shit! Iconic
Tumblr media
I honestly found AA6 so unenjoyable I forgot most of the details from it hahah, and this was easily the least interesting case in the game too, but Geiru's eccentric design and sad motivations were fairly memorable imo. She is one of the few murderers in the entire series that was actually sympathetic in the end.
As for clown in terms of personality, none other than
MR. HERLOCK SHOOOLLLMEEEESSSS
Tumblr media
I absolutely love the name 'Herlock Sholmes' too, rip everyone who hates it but I'm not so weak. It's perfect for AA and it gives us the much needed separation from the dreaded BBC show.
I could rant and rave about Herlock for a long time honestly; he's a fantastic char that's full of so much more depth than he lets on, he used to be a dick in the past but mellowed into a big ol' softie over the years, he's an ADHD icon, his design fucks, he's an attention whore, he's unreliable yet also ride or die, he's the dumbest smart person you'll ever meet, his science shenanigans make no sense both in terms of the setting and just logically, the Dance of Deduction was an extremely fun gameplay feature with banging music (it did drag on a bit tho), he fucking livestreamed Barok's trial to the fucking Queen, and he's a single dad!!! I actually hated him at first haha, I thought he was unbearably goofy and I was still mourning Kazuma, but when it started to come out more how much of the goofiness was an act (and the act itself grew on me) I found him super interesting and entertaining, and eventually he became one of my absolute favs amongst a cast full of fucking phenomenal characters. The fucking partners dance where he finally turned off all the silliness? God what an amazing pivotal scene.
I also love the subtle differences in his dynamic with each of the various major chars even if they fall into the same "category" of communication, like how annoying them to hell and back is his go-to for Ryuu, Barok, and Gregson, or how he tries to act more put together but his Herlock-ness still shines through for Iris, Susato, Gina, and Yuujin, but none of these dynamics feel exactly the same, he genuinely cares about all of them in their own ways. His relationship to Iris means so much to me even if I have problems with how it was written (I really resent they ever did the "roommates" angle) and he's a character that at his core collects found family because he's a kind and loyal person, and really who wouldn't fall for that?
Herlock is hands down my favorite Sherlock adaptation ever and I really doubt that'll ever change.
From this AA ask list!

2, 4, 9, 16, 22 for the ask game :D (feel free to do the ones you want!)
ok buckle up buttercup because this is going to be a LONG one lmao thanks for the questions bae 💕 you know i love talking about them gay lawyers
2 - favorite case
you see this one is already a tricky question to ask me, a renowned indecisive bastard. with a notable exception (turnabout big fuck), i think i have enjoyed all cases for one reason or another, i'm unsurprisingly easy to please. however, if i had to list (LIST not rank) my favorite cases it would go kind of like this:
farewell, my turnabout (a race against time.... your client being guilty...... finding the meaning of the truth......edgeworth returning....... masterpiece)
turnabout memories (playing as mia playing as mia playing as mia playing as mia playing as m-)
bridge to the turnabout (i don't think there are words to describe the fondness i have in my heart for this case and the cathartic conclusion to the trilogy and to mia's story, the TRIBUTE to her and her legacy oh my GOD)
turnabout for tomorrow (i unashamedly loved dual destinies and the ending got me crying like a toddler, so melodramatic and so SAD SO MANY ATHENA/SIMON SIBLING FEELS)
turnabout storyteller (sue me)
twisted karma and his last bow/the resolve of ryunosuke naruhodo (i don't think i need to explain myself with this one, anyone who has played it knows it is a cultural reset and the best thing to happen just ever)
if i had to choose one, though? it would have to be twisted karma/resolve. it genuinely made me lose ALL domestication and go feral. i have said this once and i will say it more times: the great ace attorney is the best videogame of a time
4 - memorable witnesses
i have to name fucking moe the clown here. for lack of a better word, that fuck sure was memorable. i kept insulting that hijo de puta reverting to my native spanish because he made me so MAD and he kept LAUGHING and i hate clowns so Much. his cross examination is my villain origin story
also dahlia inside maya's body pretending to be iris? iconic. that was amazing to see and amazing to figure out
maria gorey 💕💖✨🥰
i always love whenever you have to cross examine someone you know from before, like cross examining simon and apollo during turnabout for tomorrow or van kinks during twisted karma. it's just so different when you actually care a lot about the person on the stand you know
5 - "oh shit" moment
oh there have been plenty! i can remember very vividly the gasp and the "NO" i yelled at the screen when athena's prints were found on the lighter in turnabout for tomorrow, because i would have NEVER guessed the case was heading that way. having athena suddenly be the defendant was an Experience and i loved every second of it
realizing there was only one person who had described the poker cards as blue during turnabout trump made me sit down for a moment. i genuinely thought I got it wrong and would get a penalty when i presented kristoph's profile, i screamed so hard
also i may or may not have gasped so hard all air left my lungs when susato recognized kazuma as the apprentice during the return of the great departed soul, and then the apprentice looked sideways and i saw his profile and it was HIM UGH SO GOOD
16 - a ship i don't get
blackquill and the phantom. like. why?? what??? i really don't understand. mostly because i think if there is a token straight in this franchise that is simon blackquill, but also because i can't see them as a couple. i just can't.
even with aa ships i don't personally agree with, like narumayo (derogatory) or cykesquill (*sounds of me gagging across the ocean*), i can see why people would ship them. nick and maya are best friends and i get that many people would see chemistry where i see sibling-like banter; and sunshine girl/emo grumpy bastard is one of the oldest and most popular ship dynamics for a reason: it works. but with simon and the phantom i don't understand the appeal or why you would even ship them. it absolutely escapes my mind SIMON WAS IMPRISONED FOR A CRIME THE PHANTOM COMMITTED WHYY
22 - plot twist that annoys you
you know what's coming: "apollo is actually trucy's brother" from aa4. i don't really mind they're siblings, not at all, i find it quite cute – however, the way it was done was lazy and badly written. though i can't say it came completely out of left field, because back in the first case you're told that only apollo and trucy are able to perceive, that is the one and only clue leading to the "shocking revelation" that they're both thalassa's kids. such a cheap trick clearly done to tie apollo to the trilogy characters and the plot in some way... he didn't need that! he was fine just the way he was! having your mentor turn out to be a murderer and your childhood idol a double-faced cheeky bastard was enough trauma to fuel apollo through the next games, he didn't need all of *gestures broadly* this
(and some would argue he didn't need his other backstory either but anyway-)
and it could've been so easily done too! just mention apollo was raised in an orphanage. have him mention he wouldn't know anything about having a father because he grew up alone. just anything, something that would plant the seed of "hm, what if" inside our heads. it's a problem with an easy solution but they didn't do it! they decided to just drop it all in the last case and hope the impact of the reveal would mitigate the outrage. so annoying and for what
anyWAY this was long bae i hope you enjoyed it and you got a good glimpse inside of my twisted mind 😩
(i would've liked to have more tgaa here because that game gave me Thoughts but you already know it's my favorite videogame ever so)

elyvorg’s Great Ace Attorney Liveblog - Case 2-5 Part 2
This is a transcript of a liveblog that I originally did on Discord, having played a fan translation of the first game years ago and knowing a spoiler for the second game. I do not recommend following along with this on your first playthrough!
[[Please also bear in mind that I’ve long since finished the game by now, so if past-me wildly misinterprets something here (and I often did), no need to correct me, I already know!]]
Live reactions: the final Great Deduction
elyvorg
Diving back in!
Wait, Jigoku was actually here on the ship just recently? Why would he go back to it?
love the banter between Mikotoba and Sholmes, these two are so clearly good friends :3
THE NAME UPSIDE DOWN IS NUMBERS
OH THAT'S CLEVER
so he's not dead. What the fuck is going ON, then.
Is this really just going to be as simple as, Jigoku killed Gregson, we prove it in court, and that's it? Surely there's got to be more to it than that, there's a bajillion unsolved mysteries left.
what is Kazuma doing, he still can't actually think van Zieks is guilty surely, Ryunosuke insists he wouldn't lie but I really think he kind of is lying about some things.
Bench
I'll just say that I tied this with The Grand Turnabout in terms of quality for a reason.
elyvorg
excellent to hear. :D
ummmm Ryunosuke I think Kazuma is also a witness who can clarify what happened, as well as Jigoku, actually
kazumaaaa what on earth is going through your head, friend
nnnnnnn Ryunosuke admitting Kazuma's not quite the friend he knew any more DDDD:
yeah haha he was floored by the assassin thing, wasn't he, even if he shelved it in the courtroom to freak out about later
seatherny
[[here seatherny posted some kind of analytical thought about Ryunosuke and Kazuma’s friendship; something about how Kazuma always had these massive issues all along and Ryunosuke just never knew it, from my vague recollection]]
elyvorg
please save analytical thoughts like this until I've seen the full story and can make a judgement for myself!
(as in, I would actually appreciate if you deleted that so I can forget what I semi-read)
seatherny
ohh okay, sorry! i was careful not to put spoilers, but i can see why you'd still want ppl to wait
elyvorg
it's okay, I can totally understand the overwhelming urge to Ramble
but we can do all the rambles we like once I'm done! ^o^
(possibly after I've had a bit to solidify my thoughts without outside influence)
seatherny
kazuma has that effect on people :V
elyvorg
I'LL SAY
Iris's dad is SOMEBODY ELSE?
(awww but I liked the thought of her and Susato being sisters that would have been cute)
like if Iris's dad is some other person it's got to be someone who matters, it can't just be a randomer
Sholmes's inability to sit properly on the couch is a mood
seatherny
Same
Bench

Brief interim thoughts
elyvorg
stopping to take a break to get some food and am Thinking while my food cooks. Now that it's abundantly clear Jigoku is super suspicious, I'm coming back around to thinking Kazuma's mission was more than purely personal and he was assigned to be the Reaper's new assassin by Jigoku (the List is starting to make sense!!!). Which also means Kazuma was partly lying during the conversation in his office in case 4 when he made his mission sound entirely personal. I wonder how much truth there was in the part about him receiving the letter mentioning his dad's crimes and how Jigoku laughed it off like a joke. That feels like it wouldn't be an anecdote Kazuma would fabricate, because it'd be very personal and painful, but. hm.
Live reactions: The truth about the List
elyvorg
THE FUCKING LIIIIIIST
FINALLY LET'S GET SOME ANSWERS
[[for context, if you haven’t, I highly recommend reading my theorising about the List that I did at the beginning of this liveblog, here, before reading the rest of my reactions to this reveal]]
one year ago? as in, before Wilson died? so after all my confusion in 1-5 thinking the disc must have been made shortly before 1-3, it WAS actually earlier than that?
Hosonaga dug it up for us! What a bro.
there's slashes between the pairs of names on this version that we never had before. Like, Kazuma/Shinn were the assassins, Gregson/Wilson were the organisers?
but why did Shinn assassinate Wilson then argh
Sholmes didn't want to save Kazuma's life, he wanted to stop Kazuma being the assassin. Yeah, that... that sure tracks, doesn't it.
but then how did he know?
lucky for Sholmes that Kazuma had happened to drag a potential replacement lawyer along with him, then, he can't have predicted that beforehand
YES PLEASE TELL ME NIKOLINA'S OKAY
GOOD SHE IS
PROTECT HER
don't fucking tell me Sholmes knew this because McGilded sold the info to him???
oh so SHOLMES is just casually also stealing government secrets!
SHOLMES THOUGHT THEY WERE ALL ASSASSINATION TARGETS JUST LIKE I DID
HE WAS TRYING TO PROTECT KAZUMA
I WAS KIND OF PARTLY RIGHT
WOOOOOOOO
Bench
\o/
seatherny
\o/
elyvorg
fucking LOVE that Sholmes's thought process regarding this list has turned out to be BASICALLY THE SAME AS MINE
WHOOPS THEY WERE ALL ACTUALLY ASSASSINS
wait, no?
it's the assassins paired with their targets?
...
that means Kazuma was always supposed to kill Gregson
oh boy
(the message also said "these are all four", which really implied all four were the same category of people, grr)
...in court, Kazuma said "the assassination of the mark". he did not specify it was Jigoku. DAMN that's sneaky.
fffffucking assassin exchange, you know, as you do, normal student exchange business
seatherny
yep, nothing sus there at all
elyvorg
if Kazuma knew this, did he also know that Wilson was assassinated by his counterpart and just, uhhhh, casually hid that from Ryunosuke for the entirety of 1-1?
(it goes without saying that I refuse to believe Kazuma actually had any intention of killing anyone)
oh noooo that's why Gregson was gonna transfer
maybe he isn't actually the Reaper at all and pinning all this on him was part of the plan?
anyway. so.
WE GET TO DEFEND KAZUMA FOR THIS, RIGHT
RIGHT?????
makes a lot of sense why Kazuma never confided in Ryunosuke about this. "Hey bro, my real mission is to kill someone - but, wait, hear me out, not actually, I swear--". He must have been terrified Ryunosuke would never trust him when he heard that.
also the bit where Ryunosuke arrived and Stronghart was like "do you intend to do everything Asogi planned to do?" he was really thinking "so you'll do a murder for me, will you?"
yes please can Susato and Iris be honorary sisters anyway
(love how we've just switched onto this topic after HEY YOUR BEST FRIEND'S AN ASSASSIN)
yes let Iris learn the Susato Takedown, she'll be a TERROR
AWWWWW RYUNOSUKE'S GONNA BE HER BROTHER TOO
FOUND FAMILYYYY
(still want Kazuma to be assimilated into this found family too and no I do not care that he's literally a fucking assassin apparently)
Ryunosuke really is just pulling a huge Not Gonna Think About That about the assassin news isn't he, wow.
yyyeeeaaah think I'm gonna stop there for tonight I need to FUCKING PROCESS THAT
this fucking game, by the way
this fucking game
Bench
>:3
Interim thoughts: more assassin thoughts, featuring Somehow I Am Still Stuck On This Amnesia Thing
elyvorg
hmmmmmm guess what I've just thought about: an actual plausible reason for Kazuma hypothetically having faked the amnesia if that was indeed a thing, which whoops I guess I'm still leaving open the possibility of actually. For as long as Stronghart believed he had amnesia, he wasn't going to ask Kazuma to kill anybody. If Kazuma had no intention of ever carrying out the assassination (and of course he didn't), then that's the perfect way to put it off without arousing suspicion. Then I imagine him choosing the moment he did to hypothetically fake remembering everything would be out of a combination of having heard Gregson would be transferring soon, and the truth of the Professor case finally beginning to come to light such that he needed to be able to act with more agency to investigate that.
elyvorg
LITERALLY BOTH OF THE FUCKING ASSASSINS WORE A MASK OVER THEIR EYES AT SOME POINT god i love all the parallels and foreshadowing in this game
seatherny
ohhh I actually didn’t catch the mask thing till you just said it! love it
elyvorg
still can't believe this entire story's plot happened because Kazuma nominally agreed to go and assassinate someone halfway across the world. Like, I'd been increasingly suspecting he was some kind of assassin somehow, he straight-up admitted it in the latest court section, and yet I was still floored by realising just how important that was to the everything. It's literally the only reason Ryunosuke's in England. Kazuma must have known and been hiding it the whole time from before the beginning of the game. I'd been worrying that the Secret List's true nature would be kind of a letdown and not actually matter that much after how much I'd been trying to make sense of it, but it sure delivered.
Also I love the narrative bookending of how Exchange Assassination #1 was the very first murder case in the game, and now Exchange Assassination #2 (or something that looks like that) is the very last murder case in the game. Really brings it full circle.
Live reactions: 2-5 second trial day, aka And Then They Still Didn’t Arrest Kazuma >:(
elyvorg
so anyway I jumped the gun last time I said this, but THIS time it's time to go to court and accidentally make it look like Kazuma did a murder, right???
yeah I no longer remotely believe Gregson was actually part of the Reaper, this is being pinned on him posthumously
oh. no, huh, Kazuma basically already has been charged with being an assassin.
Kazuma's looking like he... didn't know about the exchange?
geez, this offer. You get to go on a study exchange tour! if you'll do a murder for us.
"There's nothing I wouldn't have done to get here. Be that agreeing to assume the role of an assassin... or betraying people's trust."
GHHHHHHH KAZUMAAAAAA
- Ryunosuke mentions how Kazuma lost his memory
- the camera pans to Kazuma, who is silent and doesn't confirm this
HMMMMMM
hee, love Kazuma helping us by telling us exactly the kind of proof we need to present to get this guy
Kazuma's claiming he just left the room after looking around but that's a LIE because we know he attacked Gregson's trunk at some point
okay I am very stumped at proving that the murder didn't actually take place at Fresno Street, I thought we established this well enough on the first day and have tried presenting most every piece of evidence relevant to Gregson's actual death and nothing works. Help?
okay, done it through guesswork, game please explain how the fuck it's the photo
okay, sure, the position of his body apparently. And why did nobody bring this up two days ago?
I guessss it's easier to interpret what it means now that we know he was transported in a trunk
that was annoyingly obscure, though
Kazuma seems... actually surprised that Jigoku did it?
my god I keep flip-flopping constantly on whether he actually ever thought it was van Zieks or not, what is going on in his head
or was he faking that reaction
looks like Jigoku's about to pin it on Kazuma here we goooo
...wait, what do you mean it actually was impossible for Kazuma to have done it and I have evidence
...okay, my logic for a second was "he was shot at point-blank range, that would have got blood over Kazuma, his outfit is very white and there'd be no way he could hide that", but apparently that's not it.
how IS the crew itinerary proof, Kazuma could be lying about where he was, surely?
okay, totally forgot he had an actual alibi there, derp
very sad that we don't seem to be actually arresting Kazuma for this murder, by the way
(I still assume there's way more to this case than this, though!)
hee, he broke the witness stand again!
still haven't explained the sword tip in the trunk, either...
Bench
Thoughts on Jigoku?
elyvorg
hold on, still not done with his confession
he wasn't actually planning to frame van Zieks apparently, interesting!
hm, he still can't say who his boss is even now. Is Stronghart (it's obviously Stronghart) threatening him in some way?
(could HE be Iris's dad?)
KAZUMAAA WHAT ARE YOU DOING
okay so hold on before we get into that, Jigoku: really fun twist to have a judge be a culprit! He seemed like a decent guy when we got to actually meet him and I totally didn't suspect him at all until quite close to when it became apparent he was super corrupt. Also, see what I just speculated about him being threatened and not actually as on board with all this as he might seem.
Bench
:D
elyvorg
though you'd think I could have guessed earlier that he was gonna be bad news because his name literally means Hell in Japanese. (Well, possibly not spelled with those kanji, but it's read the same way, at least.)
seatherny
well, seeing jigoku certainly is hell enough for Ryunosuke :D but yeah I didn’t expect him to be so involved either!
elyvorg
kazumaaaaa I know you're hurt and angry but van Zieks is not your enemy
also wow they sure got a new witness stand in fast
ryunosuke is determined to face him as his friend nnnnngh
wait, Gregson actually did bring Kazuma with him to kill Jigoku???
oooooh did they really pull an SL-9 on this
very >:3 at Kazuma furiously demanding the truth off Gregson while threatening him with a sword
someone please tell Kazuma that Stronghart was the original prosecutor on this case
ghhhh, Kazuma had no idea it was Stronghart
“Unless you were thinking of summoning a ghost to the stand." bwahaha, alas, no Feys around here
kazumaaaaaaaaaa, that breakdown, my HEART, he needs hugs
aaaaa that look of hope in Kazuma's eyes
[[so even though Kazuma never got arrested to become the final defendant and I am Still Not Over That, there were nonetheless some very delightful Kazuma moments here that I dug a lot >:3]]
