he hates the way the other says his name. how it sounds like a curse. damocles is closer now and fred tries not to feel hopeful. he watches the other closely and wonders how he's going to fix this. how he can convince the other man he just needs a little longer. but can he be sure? it's not his family that he's afraid of or teammates. he can picture the media headlines and the scrutiny into his every move. how he knows it'll change damocles life if everyone knows. "i'm not doing this shit to hide you." fred feels breathless. winded even as the other suggests there be no them. "i'm not embarrassed about you. i don't want to ruin your entire fucking life. everything would change." freddie tells him. he doesn't know if it matters at this point. "it has nothing to do with your job." he scowls at the mere idea. he loves him, he's not embarrassed of him. fred's afraid of what everyone could do to them. "you want to go find someone else? go. throw it all away because you don't understand me." maybe the fights left him too.

"freddie, stop." his voice is harsh, too firm, but the bite and the fight is draining out of him. it's giving way to something else. he's just so tired. and he wonders if it's starting to show, starting to wear on him. what is there to explain, what is there to talk about anymore? why are they dancing on the edge of whatever this is, over and over, a constant state of battle, back and forth. damocles doesn't cry, but he feels like he wants to now, like he probably should. his eyes stay dry, but that pressure behind them is telling. instead of giving into the request, instead of getting in the car, instead damocles leans down to rest his arms against the window. he isn't yelling anymore, his voice is low and defeated. "i don't want to be your dirty little secret anymore, if you don't want to tell people about us, then maybe there shouldn't be an us to tell people about anymore. i'm not upset that they're talking to you, i'm upset because they think you're available to talk to. be polite, turn them down gently, doesn't change the fact that it's disrespecting me and my feelings to sit there and watch it and know you're too embarrassed to speak the fuck up and say you've already got someone. i get it, i'm some fucking nerd in a lab and you're the big, bad hockey star. not a normal match made in heaven, but don't insult me with the idea that i'm supposed to sit around and just watch it. somewhere out there, someone would be proud to say i'm their's. if that ain't you, why should i get in this car?"
