@annasghosts I didn't want to pile on that post any more lol but I wanted to reply to this because it's interesting.
To me headcanon always implied something that could feasibly be canon. Like, to me it means "in my head, this is basically canon". So presumably something that you think would fit believably into existing canon but just hasn't been confirmed. So a headcanon would be "I think Vernon Dursley is a chelsea supporter", like u can't just go "I headcanon that the avengers came to hogwarts and were sorted into a secret fifth house".
It does seem like it's been warped over time. In some ways I think this is okay, such as saying "my headcanon is that Sirius was gay" even though iirc jkr said he wasn't*. Because even though it's not true in terms of the author's intent, it also doesn't contradict canon in any significant way. There's no concrete information either way in the actual text and it doesnt (or shouldn't lol. anyway...) change anything about the character or the story.
however since most of the fandom has Pretending There Is No Info About the Marauders disease, this just leads people to use 'headcanon' to mean "any random thing I made up on the spot which I personally would like to be true" to the point it has no meaning lol. Since the fanon Marauders are basically just OCs at this point, their "headcanon" are just character traits that they've given to their original characters. Which is kind of funny.
*edit: apparently jkr did not say that and I misremembered/was misinformed. BUt I do think it's likely that he wasn't intended to be gay, so I think my point stands anyway.

Hey Honey!! What are your opinions on people saying about giving Malferret a redemption arc?? I honestly hate his character!! What are ur opinion?? + Who are ur favourite Golden Trio Era Characters excluding Severus cuz we know he is ur fav!! P.S - I am a marauder+Severus stan together!! Is that a bad thing??
Hi! Thanks for the ask.
I don’t like Draco. Reading what he did to the Trio triggered me one day (I was bullied for years and he did something to the Trio that my bullies used to do), which had me try to sleep off an afternoon suddenly. There’s no sense in claiming he deserved a redemption arc. If you need a redemption arc, you’ve done horrible things, you are a horrible person, which is why you need something to repent from. But his fans say he deserves a redemption arc because they don’t acknowledge Draco did horrible things, or at least don’t care about the impact. They don’t see him at fault. Which should normally mean that he doesn’t need a redemption arc. But Draco has canonically been a horrible character in canon, one that did not repent in a thorough form. Draco fans (at least part of them) don’t understand the logic of a redemption arc. I’m pretty set on it: Draco didn’t have a redemption arc, and that’s what matters in the end. If his fans are so ashamed to have him as a fav character, knowing he’s so shitty they whine he lacks a redemption arc, it’s pretty sad. It’s almost as if they don’t love Draco, uh. They want a Snape, they just don’t want the mainstream unpopularity that comes with it, and they want to have Drarry etc. They crave the brilliance of Snape’s character. Why do you think they’re so jealous Snape got a redemption arc and Draco didn’t? So I find this pathetic as a whole on their part. Draco is at best a character I don’t care for, at worst one that I do come to hate, like this time he triggered trauma-related reminiscence in me (while Snape never did). Whether they give Draco a redemption arc in their fics or not is not really my problem. What matters to me is canon and their behavior to Snape fans.
Other than Severus, I like Luna and Percy.
Of course being a marauder + Snape stan isn’t a bad thing. The issue never was being a fan of the marauders or Snape in the first place. It’s the harassement and idiocy that comes with snaters, who often are marauderfen. Idiocy, because they completely lack reading comprehension (often times literally as they haven’t read the canon books), and twist canon into something unrecognizable (one of the main marauderfen even did a slip/lapsus and admitted that if Rowling participated into a marauder era film, they wouldn’t follow the fans’ headcanons and would make the marauders recognizable as full-blown, inexcusable bullies). The other problem is the constant Snape hate amongst marauderfen, while amongst Snape fans, you don’t get constant marauder hate. You criticize the marauders and explore their darkness, instead of turning them into shiny rainbows to feel better about loving a gang of bullies with privileges (I mean, Snape is a bully, one hell of a bastard, but I don’t need to turn him into an angel to love him and excuse everything he did, on the contrary I like to explore his brokeness on normal circumstances). You counter marauderfen because they’ve kept harassing Snape fans for nothing. The fact the Snapedom is more honest, closer to canon, but also less hateful, is the reason (I think) that explains why there are quite a bunch of marauder fans who joined the Snapedom instead of the marauder fandom (so you’re definitely not alone here). If you look for recent posts in marauder tags, often it will be flooded with Snape and Snape fan hate. Simply put, the Snape fandom is less toxic by itself, and you won’t get shit on for seeming to pull a legitimate defense for a character (whether a marauder or Snape), while you will get bullied by your own if you dare do so for Snape in the current marauder fandom. Remember. Loving a character never was the problem; the fans’ reactions are. And I know I seem pretty anti marauder (it’s true I can’t stand James Potter or the sirius-lupin ship), but it’s a matter of 1) personal opinions, 2) Snape defense that often requires pointing out the marauders’ flaws. Neither of them should dictate whom to love or not. I have no right to tell you you’re wrong for loving a character. And you know what? If you start to make marauder content that is Snape neutral or pro Snape, I’d be supportive. I recently said in a post that I found it so sad, the way the marauders lost their potential amongst the marauder fandom, especially when it’s getting lost to hysterical, nonsensical Snape hate... to snaters. That it would be so good if everything could be reconciled; if there was a sort of... new marauder fandom that was born from the Snapedom (= more canonically accurate). So no, I’m not gonna throw a fit just because you happen to love characters from two fandoms in "war". I don’t see the point. Never think you’re bad for doing so. I find it even cool, brave and healthy, because you go exactly against a war that shouldn’t have been born in the first place. You’ll definitely find people who agree with you in the Snapedom (and way more peaceful/polite than me)!
Sorry for the long post, I don’t really know how or what to express, but I hope you understood? If you’ve got any more question, you can always ask again!

fic masterlist!
This is a masterlist of all my fics. Most of them can be found on AO3, although there is a Tumblr Drabble section at the end.
I’ll be updating this every time I post a new fic/finish posting a multi chapter fic. Enjoy!
Oneshots
Weak In The Knees
Rating: General Audiences
Ship(s): Remus Lupin/Sirius Black
Word Count: 575
Summary: Kind of just a whole lot of Wolfstar fluff. There's dancing involved.
Other: Maybe a muggle au?? I’m not entirely sure tbh, pretty cute if I do say so myself, the title comes from the Serena Ryder song weak in the knees.
Bright Yellow Ducks
Rating: General Audiences
Ship(s): James Potter/Lily Evans, background Sirius Black/Remus Lupin
Word Count: 2114
Summary: Lily works at a corner store, and one day the Marauders walk in on a quest for ice cream.
Other: Muggle au, I’m pretty sure it was based on a post I saw but I wrote it a few years ago so I’m honestly not sure
Earth Angel
Rating: General Audiences
Ship(s): Sirius Black/Remus Lupin
Word Count: 674
Summary: I love fics where Remus is just an absolute angel, so here’s my version of that. Sirius has a crush on the cute guy who works at the bakery in his neighbourhood and finally get a chance to talk to him.
Other: Remus works at a bakery au, I wrote this after reading The London Underground Book Of Love by Children_of_the_Shadows on AO3 (absolutely would recommend, it’s amazing) and it’s probably one of my favourite fics I’ve written, the title is from the song Earth Angel by The Penguins
Gilderoy Lockhart Is A Dick (But His Dickery Has Some Interesting Consequences)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Ship(s): Remus Lupin/Sirius Black, background James Potter/Lily Evans
Word Count: 2699
Summary: When Remus finds out Gilderoy is cheating on him, the next thing he has to do is find out who he's cheating with. And if that person happens to be Sirius Black, well, Remus is okay with that. Based off of the joke me and my sister have about Legend of Korra: both of Mako's girlfriends leave him for each other.
Other: Muggle au, funny, crack fic, way more sex jokes than I usually write but it fits with the whole vibe of this fic
Text Me
Rating: General Audiences
Ship(s): Remus Lupin/Sirius Black
Word Count: 566
Summary: Written for girlwithacrown’s finish this fic challenge. My take on the second half of “Remus is a bookstore owner and Sirius comes in looking for a book during coronavirus lockdown” (might wanna read her first half tho lol).
Other: Here is @girlwithacrown ‘s first half of the fic, and here is her collection with the other fics that people wrote for their own versions of the second half!
Padfoot Won’t Leave
Rating: General Audiences
Ship(s): Remus Lupin/Sirius Black
Word Count: 2453
Summary: At the end of Harry's third year, Remus and Sirius have a plan to get Harry away from the Dursleys.
Other: crack fic, I tried my best to make it funny, someone sent a post to the wolf star games 2020 discord that said that there aren't enough “Sirius makes himself at home at the Dursley’s house because there’s nothing they can do to make him leave” fics and then we as a group decided to fix that. Here’s the collection of fics we wrote for it! :)

Ship(s): Aziraphale/Crowley
Word Count: 526

Ship(s): Remus/Sirius, James/Lily/Regulus
Word Count: 2694
Summary: Regulus sighed. “Come on, Sirius, let’s get you off this thing and then you’ll feel better.” They pried Sirius’s hands off the bar and helped him out of the rollercoaster, where he stood for a moment on shaky legs, clutching Regulus’s arm.“I’m going to get some mint chocolate,” he declared once his legs had regained some of their strength, “and then we’re going to the haunted house and I’m getting my revenge.”
Other: A sequel to ice ice baby by @pan-and-ready-to-stan, 90% banter, a LOT of swearing, fluff
would it kill you if we kissed
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Ship(s): Remus/Sirius
Word Count: 1741
Summary: Sirius leaned his head against the window and let his eyes flutter shut. Maybe if he slept, some of the horrible things would go away. Maybe if he slept, he would wake up to find that he was just on a normal road trip with one of his best friends. Maybe if he slept, he could forget the reason he was here at all.
Other: hurt/comfort, and also getting together!! bc I love get together fics :)
(i thought) i knew you
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Ship(s): Remus/Sirius
Word Count: 1432
Summary: Sometimes Sirius thinks that he might be okay. That maybe he’ll make it through this. He’s broken up with people before, hasn’t he? He’s been heartbroken before, and he’s always made it through. He’s survived so many things in his life that it seems silly that this would be the thing to break him.

This was the closest Remus would ever get to kissing him. No, he told himself sternly, don’t think about that. It didn’t work. It never did.
Other: texting, fluff fluff fluffity fluff, getting together, written for marauders pride fanzine
in a cottage on a cliffside
Rating: General Audiences
Ship(s): Remus Lupin/Sirius Black
Word Count: 2865
Summary: “Are you cold?” Remus asked. “I’ve got another blanket somewhere…” he trailed off, looking at Sirius expectantly. Sirius shook his head.
“I’m fine.” he smiled again, then took another sip of his tea. He made the same face as before. It was adorable.
“Why are you here?” Remus asked. Sirius blinked at him.
“I wanted to see you.

James wanted to play quidditch, but the risk of being seen by muggles was too high, and his parents wouldn’t allow it. James was also very stubborn. His parents should have known to keep a closer eye on the boys, but some things can’t be helped. Here is what happened:

2. adventures pertaining to love actually (and also shrek) – The woman shook her head solemnly, but a smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. “You absolutely cannot.”They grinned at each other for a moment, then the woman’s eyes flicked up to the clock on the wall and she swore. “I’ve got to go. It was nice talking to you! And you’ll have to tell me what you think of that movie if you watch it!”“I will!” Dorcas called after her, and the woman waved as she hurried out the door.Well. She sure hoped that Love Actually was on Netflix. (note: this one is set before the first fic in the series)
3. it can't be hard to find a present right?? (wrong) – “What’cha got there?” Frank flopped into the chair beside Dorcas and took a sip of his coffee, eyeing the mess of yarn on her lap with curiosity.
“It’s not weird to make her a scarf, is it?”
“...to make who a scarf?”
“You know exactly who I’m talking about.”
Other: yeah im just being generally fluffy and self indulgent here, enjoy! :))

Note
okay so i have read the posts and honestly? i definitely agree with you, and i'm not even going to lie- i'm perfectly guilty of doing the thing you complained about as well re: changing Remus' characterization. I read the books only once maybe 7 years ago? and since then it's just been fanfic/fanon/my own personal thoughts, but somewhere along the line I completely stopped centering canon in the way I view these characters (specifically speaking about the marauders era here cause those are the only ones i tend to care about lol).
So yeah, when I say Remus is my favorite character I definitely feel like I'm coming more from a place of 'my own personal version of Remus is my favorite character' as opposed to canon Remus. And the thing is, canon Remus used to also be my favorite, but like I said- I read the books when I was maybe 13/14 and so I wasn't really doing any deep introspective thinking on them. I was mostly taking everything at face value and so when Remus showed up in PoA as this seemingly sweet, usually mild-mannered guy who was generally a great teacher to his students, I fell for it. And when the text itself didn't explicitly outline his flaws, I saw no reason to do it either. And actually, I kept up this way of thinking until literally only a few months ago. (idk what ur thoughts on this fic are or if you even know much about it so bear with me here lmao) but I read all the young dudes in February and it was the first time I was fully exposed to a version of Remus that wasn't perfect, done in a way that I couldn't ignore, and unlike when I read the hp books way back when, I now had the ability to actually think critically about what I was reading. So atyd Remus kind of opened the gateway for me to think more about canon Remus and his flaws, and I came to the conclusion that- yeah, he definitely wasn't a good person, and he continuously messed up in a lot of big ways that were more often than not unforgiveable. Basically, all the things you outlined are things that I've already thought about.
But like you mentioned, I’m very staunchly in the ‘i’m going to ignore canon to fit my own ideas’ category. And tbh, I don’t think that’s ever going to change much, especially where Remus is concerned 😅. But what I will be changing/being more conscious about is the way Sirius fits into that. And that’s why I love following/engaging with people who have strong positive thoughts about him cause otherwise I would completely fall into the hole of only caring about Remus 😅.
So I really love how you pointed out that in fandom Remus is often used to trash the other characters, especially Sirius. Because it’s so true. I don't remember the exact post it was but what really piqued my interest in your thoughts about Remus was one that said something along the lines of him never being the one who fucks up in a wolfstar fic- it's always Sirius who makes the mistakes and then needs to go grovel for forgiveness while Remus sits on his chair of moral superiority, and you also mentioned this in the posts you linked me to as well. It’s so true!! I practically inhale wolfstar fics for air and yet, off the top of my head, i can’t name five fics where Remus is the bad guy. And I'll admit again that this was not something I ever thought about before, and I always just kind of went along with it. I'm sure I even said/wrote something that further perpetuated it, at some point. So this realization was sort of the catalyst that led to me sending that ask lol because I really don't want to do that anymore when writing wolfstar fics? I wanna be more conscious of the way I write these characters/think about them etc. so yeah, I think I’ll be sticking around on your blog for a while 😂. And yeah, Remus (and Lily) are, I think, two of the most mary-sued characters in the marauders era fandom. Even as a major Remus stan I can see that lol. I feel like a lot of the time, fanon gives him flaws at the surface level but then doesn’t really do anything with those flaws? If that makes sense.
Which is a shame, because I think they both have real potential to be such interesting and complex personalities.
hi so im being very masochistic here but i would really love to know more about your thoughts on remus 👀. is your dislike of him directed more towards canon or fanon or both?
i tried looking through your blog but i only saw posts where you like... slightly approached the topic before backing away completely, and now i'm curious 😅
cause from what i have seen so far, i totally get where you're coming from, especially within what seems to be the popular fanon wolfstar dynamic lately. but you're one of the first people i've seen actually say anything about it and i've enjoyed reading all of your other takes in the short amount of time since i followed you.
so if you were looking for an excuse to rant about this then please, this is me giving you one :)
(remus is my favorite character and i feel like i need to say that in case you take one look at my blog and figure it out yourself cause then this ask is going to seem really weird lmao but i promise i can handle criticism of him)
oooh hello there and welcome to my rant zone blog 💀
i’m gonna be honest, you’re so much braver than i am because i could not even deal with tangential criticism of james or sirius, let alone willingly engage with someone else about it 😭 how do you do it? teach me ur ways, mighty soldier 🙏
as for remus,,,,i have talked about him a couple times but way back so it’s no wonder u haven’t found it. it’s here- 1 // 2 // 3 // 4
warning: it’s not remus friendly, at all. i’ve tried not to like, outright bash but i’d say i ended up doing it in some places anyway.
tl;dr—i used to really like remus and wolfstar a while ago, and even now i grudgingly read it because you cant really avoid it, but the more i’ve thought about it, the more i realised i really dislike him. it started off w fanon remus (because he’s,,,some other creature only) but now i can’t stand canon either.

I'm greedy... all the questions for the ask meme
I’m sorry that this took so freaking long. Between thinking about my answers, work, school, and my laptop getting pased around, it’s been hard to get it done lol. But thanks so much!
I answered 6, 11, 25 here: http://lukesandwalker.tumblr.com/post/173277826118/6-11-25
And 30 here: http://lukesandwalker.tumblr.com/post/173275820343/i-would-like-30-please-because-i-live-to-see
But here’s the rest of them:
1: Top 3 heroes/protagonists
To narrow it down a little, i’m going to consider this as meaning MAIN protagonists.
Luke Skywalker (Star Wars) (Surprise surprise) I’ve already gushed so much about why I love Luke so i’ll keep it short this time. But I love that he’s a male lead in a science fiction movie series heavily geared towards dudebros that defies so many of the toxic tropes that usually come with male leads in that genre. Luke’s journey is about refusing to succumb to the darkness even while people from both sides of the conflict are urging him to do so. And he ultimately wins via compassion and his belief of inherent goodness. He’s a male lead that’s ultimately led by his heart, which is so refreshing. I remember being so surprised by how much I loved him the first time I finally sat down and watched Star Wars.
Buffy Summers (Buffy: The Vampire Slayer) Buffy was one of the first female protagonists of a TV like BTVS that I was ever fully invested in and she was a good place to start. Buffy doesn’t fall into the typical trope of being emotion-free or hateful towards other women like so many people believe a “badass” female character like her needs to be. Buffy loves and cares about her friends and family and even craves romance, and none of that detracts from the fact that she’s also the slayer and kicks ass. She’ll always be one of my role models.
James Flint (Black Sails) I’ll admit that calling Flint a hero is a stretch since…he’s done some bad things, but I couldn’t not include him in this. He’s such a rarity…I don’t know of any other lead protagonists that are like him. The writers could have easily made him the typical straight douchebag that are usually in shows like this (a la Jax Teller). But instead, he’s a gay man with a lot of righteous anger towards the world for the unfairness of homophobic society. And he’s NOT ashamed of being gay! One of his most iconic speeches is about refusing to apologize to England because in his mind, he did nothing wrong. And he has multiple profound relationships with women that do not boil down to him wanting to fuck them and are actually filled with respect. I just….James Flint man. I could talk about him all day.
Honorable mention to Harry James Potter, who I love a lot as well.
2: Top 3 villains/antagonists
Azula (Avatar: The Last Airbender) One of the most complex and well written female villains ever. She’s never redeemed, but she was still given enough genuine qualities and backstory to feel sympathy for her. But at the same time….she’s also just really twisted and awful at times. “Don’t flatter yourself. You were never even a player.” How iconic??? (Also, the reason Zuko is not on this list is because I don’t really consider him a villain. At least not in the classic sense).
Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars) He scares the shit out of me and actually has enough of a story and background to be interesting. Kylo Ren who?
Cersei Lannister (ASOIAF/GOT) Such an evil bitch….but once in a while, I find myself rooting for her lol. She’s the only typical villain that I really love in ASOIAF though.
3: Top 3 supporting characters
(Oh god….in no particular order. And i’m not even 100% sure of these answers lol. And for this, i’m assuming they just mean not the #1 main character.)
Bonnie Bennett (The Vampire Diaries)  I don’t talk about her much anymore because i’m pretty much over TVD but she was the first character I ever stanned in a typical fandom way and therefor will always have a special place in my heart. I’ll be forever angry about how that demon show treated her.
Sansa Stark (ASOIAF/GOT) I’m not sure who would be considered the main character of ASOIAF. (I think Ned might have been the main character in the first book but after that….idk) but i’m going to go on a limb and assume that Sansa would be considered a supporting character lol. I love my survivor wolf daughter who is underestimated but manages to outsmart everyone.
Max (Black Sails) I pretty much love all of the female characters in Black Sails but Max would have to be #1 for me. (Although Eleanor is a veeeeeery close second. And sometimes they’re tied). I love how much of an enigma of a character she is. She’s manipulative but also one of the most genuinely compassionate characters on the show. And she has one of the most profound overall arcs on the show imo. Also….a lesbian icon.
Honorable mentions: Eleanor Guthrie (Black Sails), Tara Knowles (SOA), Arya Stark (GOT/ASOIAF), Michonne (TWD), Faith Lehane (BTVS), Leia Organa (Star Wars)
4: Top 3 background characters or side characters (Skipping this one because I honestly have no clue what to put lol)
5: Top 3 romantic relationships between characters
(So….i’m only going to include relationships that are already explicitly romantic in canon. So that excludes ships like Zutara, Bamon, and Fuffy).
Max & Anne (Black Sails) My tender pirate lesbians. I love them so much
Chloe & Max (Life is Strange) The childhood best friends to lovers trope. They’ll literally go to the ends of the earth for each other.
Ian & Mickey (Shameless) Siiiiiiigggggghhhhs. I hate Shameless.
7: Top 3 fictional families
The Starks (ASOIAF/GOT) It’s a hard life being a Stark stan but…I really do love my tragic wolf family so much. And I only hope that the surviving members of it can one day find some semblance of peace.
The Skywalkers Obviously not a traditional family, but I love my trashy dramatic space family. And i’ll forever hate Disney for killing them. No Star Wars without Skywalkers imo.
The Weasleys (Harry Potter) Weasley stan forever and always. They took Harry under their wing as much as they were allowed to and probably would have adopted him if Dumbledore had let them. And they did all that even though they weren’t well off themselves.
8: Top 3 fictional parents
Ned & Catelyn Stark (ASOIAF/GOT)  (Although if i’m being honest, mainly just Catelyn lol.)
Stef & Lena Adams-Foster (The Fosters) My beautiful lesbian moms
Jack & Emily Spier (Love, Simon) Going by the movie and not the book. But they were lovely
9: Top 3 fictional siblings
Luke & Leia (Star Wars) My beautiful space twins who absolutely adore each other
The Starklings (ASOIAF/GOT) And this includes several different combinations. Arya/Jon, Sansa/Arya, Sansa/Jon, Robb/Jon, Robb/Bran, ect.
The Gallagher siblings (Shameless): They’re trashy and downright awful to each other sometimes but…I still get the feels. My favorite pairs are Fiona/Lip, Ian/Lip, and Fiona/Carl.
Honorable mention to Damon/Stefan from TVD (Trash, trash, trash but still….feelings). And once upon a time Bellamy/Octavia would be on this list if I hadn’t stopped caring about The 100 lol.
10: Top 3 child characters
(I’m going to define this as meaning really little kids, not teenagers)
Lilo (Lilo & Stitch)
Rickon Stark (ASOIAF)
Boo (Monster’s Inc)
(I feel like I cheated my having 2/3 of them being Disney characters but…I don’t have a lot of child faves)
12: Top 3 fictional animals/pets
Appa & Momo (Avatar: The Last Airbender) (They’re both pretty prominent and sort of go together so i’m counting them as one.)
Hedwig (Harry Potter) (RIP :( )
Ghost (ASOIAF/GOT) (Along with all of the direwolves tbh. Where is Ghost @GoT?????)
13: Top 3 fictional locations
Hogwarts (There are sooo many HP answers in this, I know. Even though I don’t like J.K R*wling anymore, I can’t erase the years i’ve spent loving this series).
Ba Sing Se (Avatar: The Last Airbender) (Not so much because of the location itself but because some of the best and most intense episodes of ATLA took place in that location).
Winterfell (ASOIAF/GOT) (The origins of my wolf family :( Although….my love for it probably stems more from the books now.)
14: Top 3 fictional gadgets/devices
The Skywalker Lightsaber (Star Wars) (RIP…..I hate Disney/Lucasfilm)
The Millennium Falcon (Star Wars) (Not really a device or gadget since it’s a space ship but….i’m going to go ahead and count it anyway.)
The Marauder’s Map (Harry Potter)
15: Top 3 character backstories
James Flint (Black Sails): I will never get over the fact that not only did they make their lead character on a violent TV show like this gay, but that they also made a lot of his motivations revolve around his sexuality and the loss of a man that he was in love with. Sometimes I wish I went into this show completely blind because the “Flint and Thomas reveal were in love” reveal would have hurt and shocked me in the best way. It’s one of the biggest reasons why Black Sails is one of my favorite shows despite the issues I do have with it.
Zuko (ATLA): His backstory is really sad but his character wouldn’t have been the same without it. The two prominent episodes that showed his backstory (The Storm and Zuko Alone) are both in my top 5 ATLA episodes. It also makes his eventual happy ending seem even more rewarding.
Severus Snape (Harry Potter): I’m not a Snape apologist but i’d be lying if I said that the reveal that he was a double agent against Voldemort the entire series didn’t fuck me up for months after I finished reading Deathly Hallows lol. I did not see it coming, I was so shocked.
16: Top 3 characters who die
Eleanor Guthrie (Black Sails) Sometimes I legit have to pretend that she didn’t die in order to fully enjoy my Black Sails experience tbh. My biconic queen deserved so much better :( I’ll die mad about it.
Poussey Washington (OITNB): Her death was the final nail in the coffin of me caring about that show. They killed her off when she was finally getting some semblance of happiness :(
Tara Knowles (Sons of Anarchy): All she wanted to do was protect her sons and she was rewarded for it by being brutally murdered by Gemma and being taken for granted by Jax for seasons. FOREVER BITTER
17: Top 3 non-human characters
Ahsoka Tano (Star Wars: The Clone Wars/Rebels)
Katherine Pierce (TVD)
Rebekah Mikaelson (TVD/TO)
(Lol I feel sort of wrong for including any TVD characters that aren’t Bonnie Bennett since….I really don’t care about the majority of it anymore. But once upon a time I did love Katherine and Rebekah.
18: Top 3 fictional worlds/universes
The Avatar Universe/Four nations (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
The Wizarding World (Harry Potter)
The Star Wars universe (IDK what else it’d be called lol)
19: Top 3 animated series
Avatar: The Last Airbender: I’ve loved this show since I was a kid and still love it immensely. Such a good show with a great plot and amazingly developed characters. The only thing that sucks about it is the majority of the canon romances lol)
Star Wars: The Clone Wars: I’m not a prequel hater but….this show had soooo much better writing in terms of developing Anakin’s character. Also….Ahsoka Tano! And the tragic friendship between the two of them will forever make me emo.
And I think the third would just be comprised of some of the cartoons I liked as a kid. Hey Arnold!, Rugrats, Kim Possible, American Dragon, Spongebob, The Wild Thornberries, and ect.
20: Top 3 live-action series
Black Sails
Buffy: The Vampire Slayer
How I Met Your Mother (even though that god awful finale ruined it for me for a long time)
21: Top 3 animated movies
(Ooooooh boy. The only one i’m 100% sure of it the first one. And yes, I know i’m cliche for it lol)
The Lion King (Disney)
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (Dreamworks) This movie is sooooo underrated
Anastasia (Idk the studio that made it…but I know it’s a Don Bluth movie)
22. Top 3 live-action movies
(Again, not completely sure of my answers here….there are a lot of movies that I love)
Love, Simon God this movie was so gpoy
The Parent Trap (1998)
Juno
23: Top 3 books
The Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling: Siiiiiiiggghhs
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
The Abyss Surrounds Us by Emily Skrutskie Evvvvvveeerrryone should read this book! It has such a good f/f slow-burn romance.
Honorable mentions: The Storyteller by Jodi Piccoult, The Darkest Powers series by Kelly Armstrong, The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, A Song of Ice and Fire series by G.R.R Martin
24: Top 3 comics/webcomics
Top 3 obscure series/movies/books I recommend
Idk I don’t think I have any answers for this one either? Most of the stuff i’m really into is at least kind of known.
27: Top 3 musicals or plays
The only musical i’ve seen in person so far has been The Lion King. But it was fantastic. I also watched all of the A Very Potter Musical plays on YouTube if that counts.
28: Top 3 songs from musicals
I’m going to go by musical movies for some of these.
Breaking Free (High School Musical) (Lol)
Summer Nights (Grease)
Defying Gravity (Wicked) (This one is actually from a musical. I listened to it on YouTube and loved it).
29: Top 3 funny moments in fiction
1.That scene in Prisoner of Azkaban when Ron used a phone for the first time to call Harry over the summer and ended up screaming into the phone when Vernon answered it lol. (Harry Potter)
2. Katara: You’ve been hallucinating on cactus juice all day, and now you lick something you find stuck to a wall of a cave?!
Sokka: I have a natural curiosity (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
3. All of the Catherine and Henry scenes in that one episode of Regin when Henry accidentally killed that noble lady and they were trying to cover it up. (Reign)
31: Top 3 heartwarming moments in fiction
1. Sansa and Jon’s reunion (Game of Thrones)
Tumblr media
The only good Stark reunion on the show so far (Sansa and Arya were cute until they ruined it with that bullshit storyline). It has everything. The slow approach after they first see each other, the initial shock slowly melting away as they leap into a hug, all while the Stark theme plays in the background. I have hopes that all the Starks will get better reunions in the books but until then….I truly do love this scene.
2. Zuko and Iroh’s reunion (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
Tumblr media
This scene makes me emotional….pretty much every time I watch it. Zuko approaches Iroh cautiously out of a shame for his betrayal of him and because he’s positive that Iroh is going to be furious with him and reluctant to forgive. But then he doesn’t even have to fully finish his apology before Iroh is pulling him into a hug. It’s the unconditional love that he never got from his biological father.
3. Flint and Thomas’ reunion (Black Sails)
Tumblr media
The fact that the very last shot of James Flint was him reuniting with the man he loved after ten years of believing him to be dead is something that I will never forget.
(I realize that all of these moments are reunions but….ohhhh well.)
32: Top 3 scary moments in fiction
I can’t really think of too many scary moments because I don’t watch a lot of horror stuff. I’m sure if I thought deeply about it I could come up with stuff from shows like The Walking Dead or Hemlock Grove but since it’s been so long since i’ve watched either of those shows, my mind is coming up blank.
But I will say…that scene where Matilda and Miss Honey were trying to escape Trunchbull’s house always used to scare me as a kid lol.
33: Top 3 awesome moments in fiction
(Another one where i’m very unsure of my answers because there are a lot of awesome moments in fiction that I love. But i’m just going to list the ones that come to mind first.)
1. Zuko leaves the Fire Nation and tells off Ozai (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
For so long, all I wanted was for you to love me, to accept me. I thought it was my honor I wanted, but really, I was just trying to please you. You, my father, who banished me just for talking out of turn. My father, who challenged me, a thirteen-year-old boy, to an Agni Kai. How could you possibly justify a duel with a child?
The scene goes on longer than that but i’m not going to post the full transcript for the sake of not making it insanely long. But I loved it because it was a full display of how far Zuko had come in his character development. And he finally, after almost the full duration of the series, came to fully understand that his abuse wasn’t his fault. And got to fully confront his abuser. I just…this scene is so important.
2. Max’s speech to Anne in 4x08 (Black Sails)
I remember when I first met Eleanor, how stunned I was. A woman who spoke the way she did, who had no fear of the world or the men who reigned over it.mWhen I became her lover, I watched the decisions she made and resolved to learn from them. When I became her rival, I watched the mistakes she made and resolved never to repeat them. But at the end, when I felt I had surpassed her in every way, it seemed as though there was something she was still trying to say to me. Surrendering everything she had sacrificed so dearly for, because it would have come at the expense of the one she loved. She was trying to tell me, I just could not hear her, about what is truly important. I said no to Marion Guthrie’s plan, despite having no alternative and at the risk of losing the entire endeavor, because I refuse to situate a man in a position where he might interfere one day with my ability to repair things with you.  You are the bravest person I have ever known. The truest person I have ever known. And I betrayed you and it sickens me. I’m so sorry for trying so hard to protect the wrong things. For failing to see that there is nothing important that does not include you.
I’ll always be upset that Eleanor died and that this was the last Maxanne scenes of the series (side-eyes the finale) but I will forever love this scene because it represents so much about what I love about the Maxanne and Maxanor relationships. The fact that Max, a lesbian character, had her arc and development throughout the show so beautifully shaped by her relationships with two women (both of whom were her lovers at some point) will forever make me emotional.
3. Luke refuses to fall to the dark side (Star Wars)
Never. I’ll never turn to the Dark Side. You have failed, Your Highness. I am a Jedi, like my father before me.
I’ve already talked at length about why I love this scene so I won’t go into it too much. But it represents everything I love about Luke’s character. The ending of his journey is not the typical violent fest that most male protagonists in this genre end with it, it’s refusing to fall into the same trap that Palpatine had lured Anakin into years before. I just…freaking love Luke Skywalker.

Text
Putting a “Continue reading” line because my post is long.
I don’t know about James being a great guy aside from bullying. First, bullying someone already makes you a bad person. Second, there are few chapters discussing James’ bullying because either it’s brushed off, notably by Dumbledore and the remaining Marauders themselves, or because it’s not the main subject. Harry constantly gets told how his father was a hero.
The point of Snape’s Worst Memory was to shock Harry and the reader by showing him the reality. From this point onward you can collect each arguments and question them: how the Marauders have walked Remus into Hogsmeade ignoring his concerns, how they got a huge number of detentions, one of which at least was for using illegal spells, how they held a map that allows them to spy/stalk on everybody they want, how they made “breaking rules” and “mischief” and “up to no good” a code of honor, how Lily says that James “hexes everyone in the corridors” because he can and Sirius because it was fun, how he kept bullying Snape, how Remus and Sirius show little to no remorse, how they use victim-blaming, how they twist reality in front of a Harry who wants to be convinced, in the end, that James was a good guy. Because each time he remembers what James really did, his insides feel cold, he feels lost, shocked, and in the Prince’s Tale, he actively refuses to witness the horrible, traumatic scene again. It’s a testament that what the Marauders say might be biased. That, in the end, when Snape told Harry the bad side of James, no matter if Snape is hateful -- he was right.
Of course you can love Marauders. I’m actually okay, with Remus. I think that Sirius has good qualities as well. I dislike James. Because snaters are often marauders-stans, I did develop the ability the spot their flaws.
For instance: he didn’t reject Remus for being a werewolf (I wonder if the Headmaster prevented them from doing that), and they went out of their way to become illegal Animagi to help me. Great. I can also say that using said friend’s condition that renders him mindless for a time to go to Hogsmeade and risk killing/infecting people several times, as well as to risk blowing Lupin’s secret, is not what I call respect. When they deny his protests and keep using him like this... it’s difficult. I do avoid to say this too much, but Remus seemed like a toy for them, even though they were friends.
How Sirius sent Snape to meet a werewolf in the Shack. There are so many wrong things here: he blew up Remus’ secret to their very antagonist; he knew that was dangerous, we’re speaking of Sirius who became an Animagus specifically to hang out with a werewolf; he knew that was dangerous and in fact he counted on it, because when Remus says that “it was a joke”, Sirius says that Snape “deserved it” or that the event “served him right”. Sirius used Remus as a Dark Creature, even though Remus tells them to stop, doesn’t agree with their bullying (although sometimes he follows, as seen in the detention cards), worries about harming someone as a werewolf, hates his lycanthropy, and thus must know very well that Remus wouldn’t ever want to have a student’s blood on his hands. Sirius could have had Remus executed for it. What did Remus think about it? He later convinces himself it was a simple joke.
James saved Snape so you would expect he stopped when he saw the proportions it got? No. He keeps bullying Snape, ensured he’s covered by the Headmaster. He sexually assault him. Most of all, to Lily “what’s he done to you?” he replies “He exists”. And Sirius happily follows, like, as the book says, “a dog that had spotted a prey”.
James saved Snape’s life -- but his problem is that he exists. What could be an interpretation given in the books? That his main motive was not to save Snape’s life because he didn’t wish people dead, no -- because it would mean James expelled, Sirius sent to Azkaban, Remus executed, Dumbledore in difficulty, the Potter’s image ruined, and of course Snape’s best friend Lily rejecting him completely. She didn’t know indeed that Sirius was the one who sent Snape to the Shack to meet a werewolf -- Severus wanted to tell the truth, he couldn’t of course.
As I said, Snape shouldn’t have followed Sirius’ directions. Does this invalidate Sirius’ act? No. It makes Snape’s decision stupid. As well as it underlines why his action was desperate. When you are willing to follow your bullies’ instructions because you want them expelled, that does show how desperate he was. Some would argue that, by choosing to go to the Shrieking Shack, he consciously risked his very life just so he could finally get a proof to show Dumbledore they must be expelled. As if violent, long-term bullying wasn’t a reason in the first place.
That James was willing to ensure Lupin’s life? Good! I would still think that, seeing how wealthy it is, it didn’t cost him that much relatively, but why not? It’s sad because most people wouldn’t be able to do that for their friends, even though it doesn’t mean they are lesser for it.
That James sacrificed himself for Lily and his child? That he fought against Voldemort (since he was educated in the Light side in the first place)? Great as well. The problem is when people invalidate Snape’s sacrificing actions, that not only concerned the one he loved, then the Potters and the Longbottoms, but also extended to the Light side as a whole. They take it for granted. But James trying to fend off Voldemort as he and his family were trapped in the house is also good.
He was a pureblood and didn’t outright discriminate Muggle-Borns -- good (even though I would still argue he didn’t have to put himself in question to change, as he was educated by a Muggle-loving father). But see -- the fact that he was a wealthy, influential pureblood actually renders his actions more serious. He, along with his friends, despised Snape for having greasy hair, which can be explained by how he comes from a poor household.
You know what James could have done? Either ignore Snape or actually befriend him along with Lily. I mean, he’s the Slytherin who was friend with a Muggle-Born -- who, despite the fact Muggles seem to mock him, tries not to be discriminative because of Lily -- a Halfblood who has a Muggle-Born friend even though it could have mean ostracisation and social pressure from the rest of the Slytherins, since being Halfblood is still being tainted, and having a Muggle-Born friend is being a blood traitor! If Snape had started to show discriminative behavior, they could have told him to stop, convinced him to change, or rejected him.
But no, they bullied him. They had detentions, Remus and Lily to tell them they were wrong -- they kept going. Harry debunks their “we were young and stupid” excuses because bullying is not justifiable, less of all because of that! Because that’s what bullies say in real-life! They said that Snape liked the Dark Arts -- and so what? Knowing Dark Arts (and inventing ways to defend yourself against them) is not the same as using it. There shouldn’t be taboo knowledge. And when Snape used a Dark spell, Sectumsempra -- maybe it was because he was threatened to death in the first place? As they say, Snape inventing Sectumsempta is the equivalent of a victim bringing a penned knife to school to defend themselves. Besides this difference they make in the books between Light and Dark spells is harmful. James used soap to choke Snape -- in real-life you use water and a towel to torture people. James stripped him naked in front of all -- in real-life women are publicly shamed this way. James and Sirius used an illegal spell to make a lambda student’s head grow twice their size, which could have killed them if their neck broke. Sirius sent Snape to a Dark Creature, using victim-blaming later on -- in real-life bullies can send their target in a dangerous place for them to get harmed or worse. The fact they didn’t use Dark spells -- even though Rowling said that every curse, hex and jinx contained Dark Magic in them -- isn’t an excuse to get away with bullying. You want an example? Snape was a dick to Harry, yet he didn’t use Dark Magic for it. Draco bullied Harry -- no Dark Magic. Doesn’t mean that what they do isn’t harmful.
Which brings me to something I said way too often lately: if you were white and went down the street to repeatedly assault a depraved metis/Black person because you assume they’re a terrorist, people would call you racist, and with reason. What do we have here? Pureblood wealthy elitist James who, with the help of another pureblood and two halfbloods, harasses an unpopular halfblood for 7 years, calling them out for liking a subject and belonging to a certain House -- but mostly because, as they say, Snape is ugly and it’s fun to harass him.
On the other hand, we have pureblood James who stalks Lily. Really. Look at this:
Catcalling: “All right, Evans?” said James, and the tone of his voice was suddenly pleasant, deeper, more mature.
More catcalling and sexual harassment:  “Oh, well, he always made a fool of himself whenever Lily was around,” said Sirius, shrugging. “He couldn’t stop himself showing off whenever he got near her.”
Bordering on obsession: “ “And,” said Harry doggedly, determined to say everything that was on his mind now he was here, “he kept looking over at the girls by the lake, hoping they were watching him!” [where Lily was too]
Blackmail:  “I will if you go out with me, Evans,” said James quickly. “Go on . . . Go out with me, and I’ll never lay a wand on old Snivelly again.”
Threat and victim-blaming:  “Ah, Evans, don’t make me hex you,” said James earnestly.
Manipulation/dishonesty: “ She didn’t know too much about it, to tell you the truth,” said Sirius. “I mean, James didn’t take Snape on dates with her and jinx him in front of her, did he?”
All on a Muggle-Born girl. And if I was to associate purism with racism systematically, this would mean that a rich white man followed by his friends has harassed a Black girl, never listening to her when she screams to stop hexing her best friend, which makes Harry wonder:  She had clearly loathed James and Harry simply could not understand how they could have ended up married. Once or twice he even wondered whether James had forced her into it...
I don’t like his behavior at all. You could also think James wanted to cut Lily and Snape’s friendship because he saw him as a threat to his plan of dating Lily -- he seemed jealous of Snape in other words. The fact that he has two halfblood friends -- one of whom (Peter) still seemed like a lost puppy to McGonagall’s eyes even after all their years together, still was anxious and who doesn’t laugh along with his friends curiously -- doesn’t mean he couldn’t perpetrate discriminative behavior. That’s like saying that if you’re friends with a Black person you can’t be racist, or that if you married a woman you can’t be misogynistic. Of course that’s wrong.
And I already argued about how he “grew up” out of his dubious teenage phase.
You are also mistaken if you think that everyone know James as a horrible man. There are a lot of stans that would picture James as a saint. There are lots of snaters as well.
James and Snape both did wrong and right, and it’s our choice to forgive them or no, to stan them or no. Harry forgave both of them, with the rest of the Marauders. Harry, former Snape-hater, son of James Potter, godson of Sirius Black and friend of Remus Lupin, the Boy-Who-Lived-Twice himself, after 19 years of maturing and reflection, considered Snape the bravest man -- with reasons, part of which I explained above (my favorite brave moment is mainly how he went back to Voldemort in GoF even though he’s pale from fear and Dumbledore stays silent for a long time after his departure to a probable torture session).
Here’s my answer
@whataplottwistyouwere
Okay first off, please, please use paragraphs! Especially if you say things in non-specific order!
Snape was a victim in his younger years. That’s canon. When you are bullied for 7 years, sent to a werewolf for possible infection/murder and are sexually assaulted in front of a school, you are a victim. When you are bullied, you are a victim, since bullying is always one-sided.
Now let’s see your first argument: “Snape wouldn’t miss an opportunity to hex James whenever he got the chance.” This is a quote used by Sirius Black, who is one of the bullies. Which puts his argument in doubt, because it may be biased. And guess what? He’s already proven to be biased. He uses typical bully arguments: “that was just a prank” for instance. Most importantly, he uses victim-blaming: “he deserved it”, “he was jealous”, which proves he never put his actions into question. He says “Nah Lily didn’t hate James” when she clearly hated him, as Harry concluded: “She had clearly loathed James”. When she refuses the date James, for Sirius, it’s “bad luck”. When she tells James why he makes her “SICK”, Sirius says “She thinks you might be a little conceited”, which is typical misogynistic behavior: always dismiss the point of what a girl says, she’s not in her right mind, she’s being hysterical. Not only there is extreme insolence but he also re-phrases her arguments so as for James to think that, no, the problem isn’t that he hexes everybody in the corridors just because he can, that he catcalls her by ruffling his hair arrogantly or shows off with a Snitch – no, the problem is that, “reading between the lines”, he might be a little conceited.
If we had to get back to your initial argument, in how Snape “never missed an opportunity to hex James”, what do you think of this:
Snape was on his feet again, and was stowing the O.W.L. paper in his bag. As he emerged from the shadows of the bushes and set off across the grass, Sirius and James stood up. Lupin and Wormtail remained sitting: Lupin was still staring down at his book, though his eyes were not moving and a faint frown line had appeared between his eyebrows. Wormtail was looking from Sirius and James to Snape with a look of avid anticipation on his face. “All right, Snivellus?” said James loudly. Snape reacted so fast it was as though he had been expecting an attack: Dropping his bag, he plunged his hand inside his robes, and his wand was halfway into the air when James shouted, “Expelliarmus!” Snape’s wand flew twelve feet into the air and fell with a little thud in the grass behind him. Sirius let out a bark of laughter.
Is that what you call Snape “never missing an opportunity to hex James”?
“Yeah,” said Harry, “but he just attacked Snape for no good reason, just because — well, just because you said you were bored.” [Harry]
What about another point of view?
“Your father would never attack me unless it was four on one, what would you call him, I wonder?” [Snape]
Not only do we have the damn untampered objective Pensieve to prove Sirius is wrong, but we have the judgement of someone who knows what’s it like to be a victim and the opinion of the target. The point? That argument about how Snape always started an attack is utterly wrong. Honestly I don’t know how he could even do that when dear Marauders were always 4-on-1.
Now another argument would be that Snape retaliated. That’s not rivalry. That’s a victim defending themselves. If a victim, who can’t be more outnumbered and rendered powerless, tried to retaliate, that’s called self-defense. I dare you to tell me otherwise. If you do, I sincerely hope you don’t ever try to judge women who tried to fight off gang rapists in the street. Just because they are many doesn’t make them any righter – especially when you have the objective evidence of what happened, not denied by the assaulters.
But indeed, Snape uses the words “for enemies”. That is a state of mind adopted by victims who are more or less assaulted. There are “enemies” out there, from whom we have to defend ourselves. That is a testament to the incredibly toxic, destructive atmosphere of Hogwarts generated by the Marauders.
Second: insulting others doesn’t make you less of a victim. That’s common sense. The existence of bully-victim proves that. The fact he called Lily a Mudblood once (yet tried to apologize for it) can’t negate, by the snap of a finger, the evidence of his trauma and childhood abuse. That’s the excuse bullies use the justify their inexcusable behavior against their target. Sorry if you’re not familiar with the mechanisms of bullying.
Now I’m going to ask you a question: if Snape was calling everybody a Mudblood, then why was Lily staying friends with him? Why was prefect Lily staying friends with a purist – who showed canonically that he tried not to use anti-Muggle slurs, like with Petunia on the train, even though it’s common to despise Muggles publicly? If Lily stayed friends with a purist who insulted Muggle-Borns but cut her friendship the moment she was personally attacked then that’s a self-entitled hypocritical move. Seeing how characters can be biased – like when Sirius says that Snape was constantly hanging out with Death Eaters when that seems not really possible because of his friendship with Lily and which is contradicted by the fact that he was alone in Snape’s Worst Memory, hiding behind a bush, not defended by any Slytherin – I’d say that Lily was influenced by her Gryffindor friends, who are already trying to convince Lily to leave Snape behind (which is why she’s trying to defend him).
Your argument that James grew up and matured is also canonically false:
“And stopped hexing people just for the fun of it,” said Lupin. “Even Snape?” said Harry. “Well,” said Lupin slowly, “Snape was a special case. I mean, he never lost an opportunity to curse James, so you couldn’t really expect James to take that lying down, could you?” “And my mum was okay with that?” “She didn’t know too much about it, to tell you the truth,” said Sirius. “I mean, James didn’t take Snape on dates with her and jinx him in front of her, did he?”
What’s to be deduced? That the self-righteous, “I have matured” Marauders kept bullying Snape “because he was a special case” – or mostly, as Sirius said, because it was fun to bully people. That dear “I have grown up” James manipulated Lily into thinking he stopped violent harassment (even those who insulted her, as she asked), that he kept bullying Snape until the end of Hogwarts while knowing that Lily wouldn’t approve of it.
Sure, Snape shouldn’t have joined the Death Eaters, right? But I wonder if he had much choice? Do you get your throat sliced up when Voldemort and your Slytherin dormmates ask you to join them and you have nobody to defend you if you refuse aka defy Voldemort? When you see that the Light side is composed of pureblood people with political influence who gets away with threatening your life and making school a living hell, students either too coward to defend you or enjoying your torment, professors close their eyes on it, and that Dumbledore himself silenced you after a werewolf attempted murder and protected your very own bullies? That you have been groomed to think that in the end, power is the end of the word, that being pureblood does give you privileges; that Voldemort will give you respect, protection, a job, makes exceptions to admit you as a half-blood and Lily as a Muggle-Born (he asked her to join him), and seems to be winning the war anyway? You know how vulnerable people are targeted by extremists (like our dear terf Rowling)?
But you’re right. Snape is a grey character after all, he has to have done bad things in the first place to justify to concept of deserving redemption. Since Lily left him alone, he seems to have abandoned her side and joined the Death Eaters. You just forget one thing: after 2 years of spying, he changed sides and conviction. He could have just given to Dumbledore the information that he had to protect Lily, her family and the Longbottoms who were also targeted – but no, despite everything, he stayed loyal until his very death, forbidding people to insult Muggle-Borns when he could.
I don’t see how James also matured for himself.
Voldmort was already trying to kill the Potters since they’ve defied him at least three times. He targeted them specifically, as the Prophecy said. Snape reported the prophecy – and you seem to be forgetting that he changed sides to protect them and served the Light side, which means he fought against Voldemort from this point onward. Is that convenient for you to forget, huh?
Now about the “killing a baby” thing. If you were on the Light side, and you heard about how the son of a Death Eater would be able to kill Dumbledore/Harry and lead the Death Eaters to victory, would you wash your hands just because you don’t want to kill? Second: the Prophecy didn’t say that “the one born as the 7th month dies” would be a baby. For all we know it could have been an adult born from elderly persons who defied Voldemort thrice, an adult who was born on the end of July that could have come back to defeat him. As Dumbledore said, Snape couldn’t have known it would be Harry or Neville. And again you forget how he protected families, including their children – including a whole school of children for years. But indeed, in the eventuality that he was ready to let a child die, that makes his changement all the more strong. The key word is that Snape “was” okay to let a child die. Later, when he learns that Dumbledore was okay as well to let Harry die for the greater good (you see, both sides use the same weapons), he is “horrified” and protests how the Headmaster “raised him like a pig for slaughter”. When he learns that a child has been captured by the Basilisk, he grips the chair in distress, who reveals to be first-year Ginny, and gets all the more angry when he sees Lockhart acting like an incompetent clown. Later he says that he tried to save as much people as he can. But isn’t that soothing for our entitled hate against Snape to bring forth the past Snape only?
Of course he didn’t give a fuck to the reason he was fucked up! Of course I wouldn’t give a shit if my bully died! About Voldemort killing a child, I don’t know – do you have evidence he was okay with that? Because what we know is that he can’t ask Voldemort to spare Harry, that would be suicide. He can’t ask Voldemort to spare James, that would be suicide as well as people know that Snape loathes his guts and joined Voldemort partly because he hated him. That would put his loyalty into question. Why do you think Dumbledore doesn’t seem to have asked Snape to ask Voldemort to spare James as well? It’s already extremely risky and brave to ask Voldemort to spare a Muggle-Born woman who’s defied him thrice and who’s the mother of the Prophecy-Voldemort-slayer.
You know what he did three lines later? Just after he’s being called for it? He asked Dumbledore to save the whole family, and gives himself entirely for the cause: “Anything,” he says. He could have given up. He didn’t.
If people tell you not to forget that Snape had a terrible childhood that’s because there’s a reason? You literally claimed that Snape wasn’t a victim. There’s no higher bullshit.
Snape wasn’t obsessed with Lily – okay you want proof? Do you have a scene where Snape blackmails, catcalls, stalks Lily like James did to her, because he felt self-entitled to Lily? No. Do you have a scene where Snape asks her to become his lover? No – for all we know he only wanted to stay her friend, his love could have been platonic – like Sirius’s love for James, or Albus’ love for Ariana. Do you have one little sentence from the remaining Marauders protesting how Snape tried to stalk Lily? Not even that! So again – you made it up for your convenience!
Not every single freaking teacher would become Dumbledore’s double agent against Voldemort himself. Not every teacher would be able to endure the pressure and the loneliness it implies. You have Slughorn who canonically was unable to save Ron and almost let him to die because he was incompetent. And even if they did? Those are reasons to respect him. You know how many would have died or suffered dementia from the Carrows’ torture? Harry, Draco, Katie Bell, Hermione, Sirius, Lupin, Dumbledore – Neville, Ginny, Luna – the whole school in 7th year. Yeah that’s right – praise the Marauders for fighting for those they love but when Snape saves everybody down to those he despises you take it for granted. Bad faith. What he did for the war deserves a medal.
He bullied Harry and Neville, but does he abuse his power against everybody who’s not in Slytherin? I don’t know – Gryffindors don’t like him but you don’t know for Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs, who – by the way – seem to despise Slytherins for being Slytherins, thus rendering them biased as well. What he does is mostly in his right – he does what McGonagall would do for instance, though he doesn’t punish students with actual death threats. He manages Potions which is a class reputed for being dangerous – Neville could have melted his face off several times, like in his first class, but Snape tries (and fails) to teach him to be serious in class.
Neville is never said to have witnessed his parents getting tortured, and even if he did? Ah yes, Snape was his Boggarts, well, let’s make that clear:
Snape was Neville‟s Boggart when he should fear Bellatrix. There‟s a simple explanation: he never met Bellatrix, he never met a murderer before. He‟s a 13 year-old boy and we don‟t know how much he‟s heard about Bellatrix. If Boggarts show the deepest, truest fear, why isn‟t everybody‟s Boggart a Death Eater? How do you explain Lupin‟s Boggart wasnt Greyback? This is like saying “Harry is scared of Dementors even though his parents were brutally murdered and he was almost killed himself.” Lupin actually feared Harry‟s Boggart would be Voldemort. Also, did you forget that another of Neville‟s fear – and a legitimate one at that, is his own grandmother that lives miles away for months! Actually, his grandmother and his great uncle nearly killed him to force his magic out and see if he wasn‟t a squib. She basically put pressure on him by stating that he must be a great wizard or else his parents would have sacrificed their lives for nothing and he would be a shame to his family. Snape pointing out Neville‟s failures redirects to that fear that his own relatives implemented in him. If you should accuse someone of Neville‟s shy and insecure personality, it should be his relatives most of all! So that means a Boggart doesn‟t always display your ultimate fear but what you fear the most at the instant. It shows a fear that is immediate, known and met quite regularly, or the meaning behind it: like Lupin not fearing the moon in itself but the transformation into a werewolf. What Neville feared at the moment was Snape standing there barely two minutes ago, right after a Potions lesson. Plus notice how Harry and Molly Weasley can‟t banish their Boggarts… It‟s because their fear was deep, it was a true fear. Neville literally ridiculed Snape on the first try of his life! Not only that, he defeated it a second time without breaking a sweat, actually killing off the Boggart. Harry couldn‟t do that for a long time. Another element: the point of the scene here is to put contrast between the Boggarts of the class (including Neville‟s) and Harry‟s Boggart. Sure, Boggarts seem to show people‟s phobias and some gross things, but Harry fears fear himself, according to Lupin, and that is allowed because he‟s been through much more so far: nearly killed by Quirell and a Basilisk, had his parents murdered, mistreated by the Dursleys… It‟s a contrast between childish fears and adult fears. In the writing of the chapter, Snape is put among childish fears. To put it simply: I‟d fear more a mosquito flying inside my ear than cars that could kill me or make me a cripple. I fear more the dark corridor at home when I go to the bathroom than a potential rapist following me in the dark outside. In the end: the fact Neville„s parents were tortured by Bellatrix doesn‟t mean his Boggart is going to be her, because he never met her and she wasn‟t the immediate threat. On the other hand: Snape being Neville‟s Boggart doesn‟t mean he‟s traumatized the boy, because he would have been unable to defeat the Boggart otherwise. So I get it if it‟s wrong that Neville feared his teacher, but you can‟t say he was irredeemably traumatized by a character we know is extra strict. If you studied Neville enough, you‟d see his roommates aren‟t the sweetest toward him too, and that Snape bullying Neville is usually followed by the Slytherins in general.
Does Neville have a panic attack seeing his Boggarts? No, he seems sheepish. Is Neville frozen in fear later? No – he’s so brave he accompanies Harry in the Ministry in OotP and actively revolts against Snape in 7th year. The fact Neville fears Snape, whom he just met twice before the class, is bad because you shouldn’t fear your teacher, but as we see, he’s not actually pissing himself for it. Quit dramatizing.
About Hermione’s teeth: yes that was mean. Wasn’t like she wasn’t already ashamed of them before that though. Wasn’t like she was scarred for life for his comment. Wasn’t like he could show much empathy when he had the children of Death Eaters behind him to judge his actions and report them to their parents. And really, if you’re going to say that Snape isn’t a (spy) hero for shaming her teeth, then nobody’s a hero in HP, not even Hermione who mutilated Marietta’s face for life gratuitously and without remorse.
And really, about Remus? Okay, here we go.
Snape has kept his promise of not revealing Lupin‟s condition for years, since the Werewolf Prank. After his meltdown in front of the Minister of Magic, Dumbledore tells him: “Unless you are suggesting that Harry and Hermione are able to be in two places at once, I‟m afraid I don‟t see any point in troubling them further.” Snape, as a teacher, has likely been informed of Hermione‟s possession of a Time-Turner to attend to more classes. Snape is a clever man, so when Dumbledore tells him, despite being out of his mind, isn‟t it likely that he understood what Dumbledore implied? That he understood it was Dumbledore‟s plan to save Black? So of course Snape would be seething even more, but his loyalty to Dumbledore has withstood the test of time – he‟s one of the Headmaster‟s most loyal man. Snape is known for doing things even if he loathes himself (and Dumbledore) for it. After this, Snape leaved fuming toward his dungeons, and Dumbledore departs shortly after; it is also likely they had a discussion. The main idea is: what if Dumbledore had given permission to Snape to reveal Lupin was a Werewolf? Playing on Snape‟s bad reputation, showing that he isn‟t as loyal as we might think to Dumbledore, and that he knows to use stigmatisation weaknesses to punish the DADA professors, antagonizing Harry even further – all of this allows to picture Lupin as a more innocent man that if he had to be fired by Dumbledore for endangering his students multiple times based on personal beliefs that Black couldn‟t be a murderer, disobeying and failing Dumbledore‟s trust since he was a teenager, and forgetting the complicated Wolfsbane Potion that Snape brewed specifically for him every month to allow Lupin a job no one else would offer. Instead of blaming Snape, we see Dumbledore rather disappointed with an ashamed Lupin avoiding the Headmaster‟s eyes, leaving as quick as possible – soon after confessing to Harry. He never told Dumbledore that his friends had been freeing a Werewolf out of the Shack to walk to Hogsmeade – and as they‟ll admit, sometimes, they had been close to being discovered, because guess what, a Werewolf isn‟t completely controllable and can hunt for a human. Putting several lives in danger, great.
Here’s the extract:
“What sort of animal —?” Harry began, but Hermione cut him off. “That was still really dangerous! Running around in the dark with a werewolf! What if you’d given the others the slip, and bitten somebody?” “A thought that still haunts me,” said Lupin heavily. “And there were near misses, many of them. We laughed about them afterwards. We were young, thoughtless — carried away with our own cleverness. “I sometimes felt guilty about betraying Dumbledore’s trust, of course… he had admitted me to Hogwarts when no other headmaster would have done so, and he had no idea I was breaking the rules he had set down for my own and others’ safety. He never knew I had led three fellow students into becoming Animagi illegally. But I always managed to forget my guilty feelings every time we sat down to plan our next month’s adventure. And I haven’t changed…” Lupin’s face had hardened, and there was self-disgust in his voice. “All this year, I have been battling with myself, wondering whether I should tell Dumbledore that Sirius was an Animagus. But I didn’t do it. Why? Because I was too cowardly. It would have meant admitting that I’d betrayed his trust while I was at school, admitting that I’d led others along with me… and Dumbledore’s trust has meant everything to me. He let me into Hogwarts as a boy, and he gave me a job when I have been shunned all my adult life, unable to find paid work because of what I am. And so I convinced myself that Sirius was getting into the school using dark arts he learned from Voldemort, that being an Animagus had nothing to do with it… so, in a way, Snape’s been right about me all along.”
Besides, people will always accuse Snape – but who‟s the guy letting Lupin go out without salary or protection or shelf or anything? Dumbledore.
There. Satisfied? People love Snape as a morally-grey character – don’t you ever assume we forget what he’s done when you do just that.
