2002-2008

Before I dive into the shows I’ve covered on this site, I’ll give you a ittle background on the events that led up to it. I grew up in Indiana, about an hour from Chicago, and the first concert I ever attended was at Chicago’s Vic Theatre (capacity 1,000) to see House of Pain (don’t judge). My friends and I got there early and secured a spot close to the stage. The opening band soon came out, and to our surprise, they absolutely killed it. That unknown band was Rage Against the Machine. In hindsight, I was likely chasing the high of that first show by attending so many concerts over the years. I actually put together a short post on that show a while back, which you can read here.

During the 90′s, I would attend a handful of shows each year, and managed to see bands like Radiohead, Blur, The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Bob Mould, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, several Lollapaloozas, U2, Beastie Boys, Oasis, etc. I successfully managed to save about 90% of my concert stubs, which makes it a bit easier to remember.

I moved to Boston in the fall of ‘02 (by way of New Jersey), and found myself in a city with no shortage of music venues and concerts, as Boston is an incredible concert market due to all the colleges. This was also a great time for music, especially indie rock, which I became partial to, and went to several shows at the Paradise, Great Scott, Middle East, and TT the Bear’s Place.

I saw plenty of shows during this 2002-’08 era, both, big and small, but the larger ones (Neil Young, Billy Joel, Elton John, Oasis, Springsteen, Tom Petty, Phish, Peter Gabriel, Simon & Garfunkel, etc.) didn’t quite have the same feeling as the smaller, more intimate shows. The bands that played the smaller, sweatier clubs had something to prove and played their hearts out, leaving the audience with a lasting impression, so they could hopefully make it to the next level. It was no surprise that I liked those shows the best.

In 2007, I was armed with a nice little Canon SD1000 Powershot point & shoot camera that took fairly decent photos for the time. Luckily the audio wasn’t too bad either, as many of the other digital cameras seemed to struggle with recording bass, but this little camera actually worked well for recording live concert videos.

In October of ‘07, I recorded and uploaded my first video to YouTube. It was The National singing “Fake Empire” at an extremely tiny Boston bar. Throughout the years, I managed to record over 600 videos in less than ten years, and they often became a staple of my reviews, and was something most of the other music blogs weren’t doing at the time.

For General Admission shows, I would always arrive early for a spot against the stage, so it just kind of made sense to film a song or two, as nobody was in front of me. I also enjoyed recording because of the challenge; I only had one shot at recording the song. I made no edits and needed to have a steady hand.

Below are a few shows from ‘02-’08 (prior to my music blog) that stuck with me, and ultimately inspired me to start mu music site in ‘09.

Bright Eyes at the Harvard Sanders Theatre (’05) - This was during the I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning tour. The show was sold out, but I managed to score a last minute ticket on Craigslist. The Sanders Theatre is an incredible venue, and the show was just as beautiful. I found a recording of the D.C show at the 9:30 Club (a few days later) via NPR here.

Ryan Adams the Hampton Beach Casino (’05) - I’d been a huge fan of Ryan Adams since his ‘01 debut solo album, Gold, which really seemed to connect with me, but I wouldn’t see him live until two years later in ‘03 at the Paradise Rock Club. His shows were notoriously hit or miss due to drugs and alcohol, and in ‘05 he released the jam heavy album Cold Roses with The Cardinals.

I actually ended up meeting Ryan before this Hampton Beach show, which was kind of a big deal for me because he was my favorite artist at the time. I just happened to be strolling around Hampton Beach earlier in the day, and stumbled upon him at a tie-dye shirt store (he actually bought one and wore it at the show).

Ryan, who often plays improv songs, played an incredible song to close the show. “Beachfront Town” is a sad, yet beautiful, ballad about how Hampton Beach reminded him of back home (Jacksonville NC). Here are a few posts I made about this show.

Ryan Adams at the Somerville Theatre (’07) - As I said before, Ryan Adams shows were kind of hit or miss due to drugs and alcohol, and I walked into this show with such expectations. However, this night was different, and would be the best Ryan Adams show I would ever see.

I had a 4th row center seat, and remember seeing a suit-wearing Ryan Adams walk on stage. His singing and playing were flawless that night, and when he changed the lyrics of “Peaceful Valley” from “Up there in heaven with a bottle of wine” to “bottle of diet Sprite”, I just couldn’t help but smile. He appeared to be sober, and he and the band never sounded better. I was truly proud of him.

Josh Ritter at Club Passim (’07) - I fist saw Josh back in ‘06 at the intimate Narrows Center in Fall River. I quickly became a fan after hearing his newly released album, The Animal Years.

He played two shows at Club Passim in ‘07 to benefit a friend that was ill with cancer, and I ended up recording four videos that night.

Bon Iver at the MFA (’08) - I remember listening to their debut album For Emma, Forever Ago in February of ‘08 and was blown away by how incredible it sounded. I checked to see if they were playing and live shows, and indeed they were. They were playing the Middle East (upstairs) in Cambridge, but it was very sold out, and many people were posting on Craigslist looking for one.

However, it wasn’t long before I got to see them live, and in July of ‘08, they put on an amazing display of music at the MFA. They basically played For Emma, Forever Ago in full since it was their only album at the time, and they sounded flawless.

I’d see them one more time in December of ‘08 at the Wilbur Theatre. You can watch “Wolves” and “Skinny Love” from that show. Fun fact, and unknown (even to me) Tallest Man On Earth opened.

MGMT at Great Scott (’08) - I actually recorded a couple videos at this show. Feel free to check out “Time To Pretend” and “Kids”. During “Time To Pretend”, I’m holding the camera very still, but the footage appears to be slightly bouncy. That’s because the floor is giving ever so slightly, due to everyone bouncing up and down. It was crazy. Fun fact - Yeasayer opened.

Wolf Parade at the Paradise Rock Club (’08) - This was actually my second time seeing the band (first time in ‘06, same venue), and their album Apologies To the Queen Mary is an absolute favorite of mine. I ended up recording six videos at this show, and my favorite was “This Heart’s On Fire”, which is crazy intense. 100% Rock & Roll.

Langhore Slim at Middle East Upstairs (2008) - I always looked forward to his shows. They were intimate, intense, and genuinely good times. Not many people heard of him at the time, and I recall two guys I’d see at every early Langhore Slim show. These dudes were super fans. They knew all the songs and cheered louder than anyone. I recorded a couple videos from this show - “In the Midnight” and “Restless”. Notice The band was a trio back then, with Paul was on bass.

The National at Paddy O’s Pub (’08) - The album Boxer had just come out, and I believe Miller Light sponsored this show at the very small Faneuil Hall pub. It doesn’t get much more intimate than this, and I shot my first video ever that night, “Fake Empire”

The one that got away - I’l share a little story about the time I headed to the Orpheum Theatre in ‘02 in search of a ticket to a sold out show. I had good success scoring single tickets way below face value outside of large venues close to showtime. I recall seeing Simon & Garfunkel at the Garden in ‘02 for $10 ($100 face value), and Peter Gabriel for $20 (also $100 face). For some stupid reason, I thought I’d have the same luck for David Bowie who was playing the Orpheum that night. I managed to find someone selling a single ticket for face value, which was $75, but I has no idea tickets were that much before I headed down to the theater. I recently moved to Boston and didn’t have much money, so $75 was a lot, and I unfortunately had to pass. I told myself, no big deal, I’ll catch him next time. Sadly, there was no next time.

While living in Boston, it seemed each year I’d attend more shows than the last, and by 2009, I felt the need to create a music website. In the days to come, I’ll share some of the most memorable shows I saw, with a post for each year (’09-’16).

(1) Boogie-Street & Documentary Photography...

Boogie will blow your mind.

The native of Belgrade, Serbia got his start began documenting rebellion and unrest during the civil war that ravaged his country in the 1990s, and the experience seemed to have a profound effect not only on him, but on his work as well. Though Boogie now resides in New York – he arrived in 1998 – all of his work still carries the urgency and thought-provoking depth of a war-torn country.

Perhaps it’s because Boogie’s latest photographs focus on lives torn apart – from the runaway smoking crack in a drug den that used to be a hospital to the gang member caught in a moment of tenderness while cuddling his newborn child. Boogie appears to have shot everything, everywhere. Beggars on the streets of Caracas, Skinheads in Serbia, birds caged by power lines in Tokyo – the world looks more moody, evocative and meaningful through Boogie’s lens. Every detail takes on a life of its own.

Unsurprisingly, the photography world has taken notice – Boogie has published five monographs and exhibited around the world. He shoots for high end clients, renowned publications and countless awe-struck eyes worldwide.

Daniel: Tell us about yourself, where did the name Boogie get picked up and what’s the story behind it?

Boogie: I’m 40 years old, born and raised in Belgrade, Serbia, moved to NYC in 1998 after winning a green card lottery; I’ve shot a lot, published 5 monographs so far, had some interesting solo exhibitions. My nickname was given to me by my friends some 20 or so years ago after a character from some scary movie.

Daniel: You do a lot of “candid” or better yet documentary photography. Are you always geared with a camera where ever you go?

Boogie: Of course, I’m a photographer, that’s what I do

Daniel: Lots of Gangs, Drugs, Skinhead photography. That screams trouble, are you not afraid meeting with these people, taking their photographs? Have you ever encountered trouble? – How do you approach these people at first?

Boogie: While I was photographing gangsters, skinheads, junkies, it never crossed my mind to be afraid. Otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to get those photos. People can sense fear easily – plus, I don’t think any photo is worth risking your life for. I encountered some minor problems, but nothing serious, after all I’m still here. I always listened to my instincts, they kept me safe.

There is no recipe for approaching people. You either have it in you or you don’t. Usually if you treat people with respect they’ll be OK with you.

Daniel: You’ve recently signed a deal with HBO’s new show “How To Make It In America” what were your feelings when you first heard HBO was interested in featuring your photography, and what do you think about the show?

Boogie: It was a great gig, I met some very interesting people and got to know how the movie industry works. I haven’t seen the show, just the pilot, which I liked.

Daniel: Here’s a funny question wrapped around the HBO show – so When did you know you finally made it, as a photographer in America

Boogie: ‘Making it’ is very relative. I made it as a human being cause I have a great family and get to do what I love.

Daniel: Have you ever thought of shooting film?

Boogie: You mean moving picture? If so, while working on this HBO show, I realized that being a director of photography is an amazing job. Maybe the only job in the world I would trade for mine.

Daniel: What is your connection with photography, your personal life, and your photographs of poverty?

Boogie: Maybe the way I grew up led me to see things the way I do? I guess so, everything you go through in life has a purpose and influences what you become in the end.

Daniel: Tell us about the shoot in Brazil Sao Paolo, how was it?

Boogie: It wasn’t ‘a shoot’, I just packed my bags and went there for a week. very intense, I shot in some scary neighborhoods, I published a book after, all good.

Daniel: What was Mexico like, where did you visit?

Boogie: I was in Mexico City with a friend of mine Adrian Wilson … it’s an amazing city, great energy, great people. Al these horror stories they tell you before you go there are bullshit. Although I’ve been in some neighborhoods where I was afraid to shoot even from the car. But you have areas like that wherever you go.

Daniel: I know you’ve visited Cuba, Istanbul, Tokyo in addition, what is it that you learn from these trips?

Boogie: Travels are always great experiences, seeing how other people, other cultures live is priceless. It humbles you in a way, makes you appreciate what you have more.

Daniel: Lots of black and white, lots of flying birds. What is it that you like the most about Black & White?

Boogie: No idea, lately I also shoot a lot of color.

Robert Frank

Influential photographer and filmmaker Robert Frank has died at the age of 94. He died of natural causes on Monday night in Nova Scotia, Canada. His death was confirmed by his longtime friend and gallerist Peter MacGill.

He was best known for his 1959 book The Americans, a collection of black-and-white photographs he took while road-tripping across the country starting in 1955. Frank's images were dark, grainy and free from nostalgia; they showed a country at odds with the optimistic views of prosperity that characterized so much American photography at the time.

His Leica camera captured gay men in New York, factory workers in Detroit and a segregated trolley in New Orleans — sour and defiant white faces in front and the anguished face of a black man in back.

Photographer Robert Frank holds a camera in 1954. His photo book, The Americans, changed the way people saw photography and the way they saw the U.S. Frank died on Monday at the age of 94.

The book was savaged — mainstream critics called Frank sloppy and joyless. And Frank remembered the slights.

"The Museum of Modern Art wouldn't even sell the book," he told NPR for a story in 1994. "I mean, certain things, one doesn't forget so easy. But the younger people caught on."

Eventually, the photographs in The Americans became canon, inspiring legions. Photographer Joel Meyerowitz remembered watching Frank at work early on.

"And it was such an unbelievable and powerful experience watching him twisting, turning, bobbing, weaving," Meyerowitz said in 1994. "And every time I heard his Leica go 'click,' I would see the moment freeze in front of Robert."

Ginsburg was a friend and photography student of Frank. He also starred in Frank's first film, 1959's Pull My Daisy. It was based on part of an unproduced play by Jack Kerouac and featured the author as narrator.

Pull My Daisy, and the other experimental, autobiographical films Robert Frank made, were his reaction to a restlessness he felt around still photography.

"In still photography, you have to come up with one good picture, maybe two or three," he told NPR in 1988. "But that's only three frames. There's no rhythm. Still photography isn't music. Film is really, in a way, based on a rhythm, like music."

Yet Frank's films shared a lot with his photographs. They were personal; they evoked emotions as much as they told stories. They're like home movies, and he made more than 20 of them before returning to photography. By then, he was a legend, acknowledged as an inspiration by such noted artists as Ed Ruscha, Lee Friedlander and Garry Winogrand.

What comes through in all of Frank's work is his ability to catch a moment. And that came from truly looking.

"Like a boxer trains for a fight, a photographer, by walking the streets, and watching, and taking pictures, and coming home, and going out the next day — same thing again, taking pictures," Frank said in 2009. "It doesn't matter how many he takes, or if he takes any at all. It gets you prepared to know what you should take pictures of.

(2) Weegee (1899 - 1968)

Biography

Weegee, born Usher Fellig on June 12, 1899 in the town of Lemburg (now in Ukraine), first worked as a photographer at age fourteen, three years after his family immigrated to the United States, where his first name was changed to the more American-sounding Arthur. Self-taught, he held many other photography-related jobs before gaining regular employment at a photography studio in lower Manhattan in 1918. This job led him to others at a variety of newspapers until, in 1935, he became a freelance news photographer. He centered his practice around police headquarters and in 1938 obtained permission to install a police radio in his car. This allowed him to take the first and most sensational photographs of news events and offer them for sale to publications such as the Herald-Tribune, Daily News, Post, the Sun, and PM Weekly, among others. During the 1940s, Weegee's photographs appeared outside the mainstream press and met success there as well. New York's Photo League held an exhibition of his work in 1941, and the Museum of Modern Art began collecting his work and exhibited it in 1943. Weegee published his photographs in several books, including Naked City (1945), Weegee's People (1946), and Naked Hollywood (1953). After moving to Hollywood in 1947, he devoted most of his energy to making 16-millimeter films and photographs for his "Distortions" series, a project that resulted in experimental portraits of celebrities and political figures. He returned to New York in 1952 and lectured and wrote about photography until his death on December 26, 1968.

Weegee's photographic oeuvre is unusual in that it was successful in the popular media and respected by the fine-art community during his lifetime. His photographs' ability to navigate between these two realms comes from the strong emotional connection forged between the viewer and the characters in his photographs, as well as from Weegee's skill at choosing the most telling and significant moments of the events he photographed. ICP's retrospective exhibition of his work in 1998 attested to Weegee's continued popularity; his work is frequently recollected or represented in contemporary television, film, and other forms of popular entertainment

The Packaging: proper retro packaging here and I really like it! The front shows the model, along with the brand name, size, colour and price.

Flipping over it gives you a little about the pair inside along with the sizing guide. I am praying these will fit me!

When you get in, you will find them with foot and leg shaping, folded neatly around plain card.

Getting Them On: I did my little scrunch and roll from the toes to the ankles, went gently over my anklets and then rolled the rest up the legs.

On The Legs: well this is an interesting colour that I rarely come across. This really looked like I fake tanned my legs from a distance if you compare it to the rest of me. I have to say it is quite nice, but would work better if I had my arms covered so it would look a little natural. I added flash so you can see how it looks a little more sheer and natural rather than in natural lighting. I also saw this had a semi-shine to them, which I honestly didn’t think it would have considering these are a matte finish.

The quality of them is what you pay for; it feels quite cheap to touch and super rough I have to admit. I will speak about that a little further down. I didn’t manage to snag these at all, which is a great thing and the stretch is barely there to be honest.

The fit of these ran a little small for me once again, and that means that I had to really tug these up the legs to make sure they try and sit flush against the skin. I had the saving grace of my bodysuit which actually kept them up but I did feel it feel super tight on the legs though. This made it slightly hard to sit let alone walk about.

The feel I mentioned is quite rough; as these have been stretched out more than they should, it didn’t help with the grainy feel you get too. This did also irritate my skin a little from time to time, so if you see any scratch marks, you’ll know why.

The Toes & Ankle: have reinforcement to them and I am so happy here. It actually curves around the sides too a little, which I thought was different but really liked. I started off with some wiggle room, but this disappeared when I had to tug them up the legs. My toes ended up with tons of pressure.

Around the feet and ankles, it’s certainly a fitted finish with no wrinkles.

The Waistband & Gusset: so these come with a boxer brief to them which you can faintly see in the images below. This would end top-mid thigh, however it sat higher as these were pulled up a lot.

Now the waistband was not bad as it did its job in a way. It’s a shame these ran small as I’m sure they would have been a decent pair for sure. I felt there was enough elasticity in the waistband and they would have held up well with the bodysuit doing most of the work.

The gusset is non-existent here.

My Thoughts?

Not a bad pair, but I wish it wasn’t so small so I could really get to see what they would be like without all the hassle. The colour was interesting I have to say, but not bad though if you’re after a darker tan look on the legs.

The Packaging: like all the others I have done, the packaging is in small packets like so. It shows the model wearing them on the front along with the brand name, model name and size. Flipping over, there is nothing to say here really; completely blank.

When you get in, you will find these folded around plain card. These came with hardly any foot shaping to them, but it is there is you look close enough.

Getting Them On: I thought I would show you the difference it made to the legs. It does smooth them out, but I found they do lighten the legs (which as you know I am not so keen on) – it doesn’t seem so much here but wait until you scroll down.

I did my usual scrunch and roll up the legs, and set in place.

On The Legs: so as you can see in these images, they really did look pasty on the legs. It didn’t help that these were a pure matte finish either, so I’m working with a pair that does nothing for my legs in terms of colour. Luckily pairing up with a beige skirt doesn’t make it look too bad – although I wish it was a long black dress now! I used flash in some images to show if it did have any shine to them, but it was bare minimum to be honest.

The quality of these are not bad; they could be a lot better but this is one of those pairs you wouldn’t be able to wear over and over as it wouldn’t last too long. I feel they would last a couple of wears and washes. They are not bad otherwise; they don’t rip or snag easily if you look after them well.

The fit of these are true to size; I felt I had enough stretch in them for my leg length and width. I would make sure you check the sizing guide before purchasing. I also found I did have to tug them up slightly to make sure I sat the boxer brief where it needed to be – otherwise it would have been half way down the thighs.

The feel of them are soft but I found they were a little grainy and rough in texture around the knees and thighs. This is where I have stretched them out the most. Apart from that they were soft. These also don’t irritate the legs either 🙂

The Toes & Ankle: no reinforced toes to be found here, so you will need to be mindful of long/sharp nails; luckily mine are not too bad. I had plenty of wiggle room for my toes and no pressure was added either.

Around the feet and ankles, it was a smooth fitted finish.

The Waistband & Gusset: on this pair we have a boxer brief / reinforced section leading up to the bad. No – this is not a control top either; it’s just reinforcement really. This ended up sitting top thigh for me, although it would have been a little lower.

Now the weirdest thing here is that these sit so high up the body; they went past the belly button! I thought it was because I tugged them too high, so I shimmied them down. But then I realised the boxer brief is sitting way too low on the legs – there is no winning here. So I had to leave it where it was.

The band itself is soft, super comfortable to wear and elasticated enough so it’s not squeezing me. The only downer is that the band rolls over itself a lot, which ended up being super frustrating as you could see it under my bodysuit!

The gusset is a small cotton patch, which sits flush against the skin.

My Thoughts?

Not a bad pair, but I wish these were slightly darker in shade rather than being so light. They would have worked a lot better on my legs – personal opinion here though. Otherwise they are not too bad. I would recommend for short-term use only.

The Packaging: is pretty eye-catching I have to say. You have the model wearing the tights on the front, which covers most of the right side. It also states the brand name, model and the denier too. The back goes into a little more detail about the pair, sizing guide and hosiery care.

When you get in, you will find these wrapped around promotional card, and flat folded so you get no leg or foot shaping.

Getting Them On: as these are a duo size, I had a lot of stretch in them, which meant I didn’t need to tug these up the legs. I could just loosely pull them up the legs and then set in place.

They were fine going over anklets as long as you take care when rolling over them.

On The Legs: so let me start of with mentioning the ‘darker patches on the legs. This tends to occur when you have more material gathering in one place than spread out on the legs. If these were XS-S, I wouldn’t have had an issue, but as these are S-M and are slightly long for me, I couldn’t tug them up the legs to give it a proper fitted finish. This resulted in patches where it’s darker on the leg as it doesn’t have anywhere else to go apart from wrinkling at my ankles (I refused to let that happen).

I also did notice that I manages to snag these super easy during the day. They didn’t catch onto anything, but I manages to just scrape my legs against something slightly rough and there you have it. Luckily I only ended up with a few discreet ones!

The fit of these are ok; a little on the bigger side for me, so I would say these run slightly large. Perfect for those who are slightly bigger in size as these would fit so well and you wouldn’t experience the ‘darker patching’ on the legs at all.

The feel of them are pretty rough; they are a complete matte pair and don’t have a smooth finish to them. This isn’t a bad thing, but something to note if that is what you look for in a pair. I felt the matte finish works well with the heart design.

The design itself is super cute; I love the red hearts scattered around the legs. I wish they were at the back too; they’re only on the front and up to the knees so the thigh is left plain black. You may find them not all symmetrical and in shape just to forewarn you!

The Toes & Ankle: these have a thin reinforced toe going across the front and back of the feet. These just about cover my toenails, which is great if you’re not a fan of larger reinforcements. It’s barely noticeable as well, hence why I had to stretch it out for you to see.

Around the feet and ankles, I managed to get a smooth fitted finish, however if these actually sat properly on the legs, they would be at the ankles wrinkling away.

The Waistband & Gusset: so the band is pretty slim, sits around the waist and holds the tights up well throughout the day. That is one bonus point to these. However, I did find them rolling down quite a bit during the day, which then started to bug me slightly. Luckily I wasn’t wearing anything fitted so you couldn’t see it through my clothing.

The band is elasticated well and it hugs the waist like I wanted it to. It is certainly a comfort band as I hardly felt it on whilst I was on the move, which I really did like.

The gusset is quite large in the middle of the tights, and is cotton so you have the option to wear with or without underwear too.

Oh before I forget to mention, these have reinforced boxer briefs to them, working from the band down to the top thigh. This was going to sit lower on my legs, but as I hiked them up a tad, they sat where they were supposed to in the end.

My Thoughts?

So overall not a bad pair to have to be honest, but this is a pair I can’t see lasting to be honest. They look lovely, they fit ok on my legs and they have plenty of stretch to them, but I feel they could have been slightly better. I would still recommend them for sure as I loved the design on them!

Well it’s been some time since I have been in a shaper pair of tights, so I am super glad to be trying them out again… And the fact these are in a Levante brand, I am even more excited. Levante is another favourite of mine purely because of their quality and how great they look on the legs.

I thought it would be best to wear a fitted dress with this pair to really see how well they work for me today. I paired up with some contrast court shoes to finish off the look.

The Review

The Packaging: is pretty informative. The model wearing them on the front and it shows the areas it targets as it’s selling point. The back goes into more detail about them and what benefits they have in each area of the leg and tushy.

When you get in, you will find these flat folded and wrapped around plain card. These also have foot and leg shaping to them, so you’ll know front from back 🙂

Getting Them On: so as you scrunch these up ready to get on, you will find they will be a little tight. I did struggle at first to get them on the feet and up the ankle, but it was fine as long as you take your time. Once I got past the anklets, I slowly rolled these up the legs and set them in place.

On The Legs: so let me start off by saying the denier is great on these. They are 30 denier, which means you get some sheerness to them, but they’re a little darker on the legs (of course) so this is perfect for those darker days when you feel 15-20 denier is a little too sheer.

The quality of them I found was great up until the point I ended up snagging them around the knees. I have no idea how I managed that but I was super annoyed as they had stayed pristine all day until I was going home!

The fit of them are great and I am so glad I tried these in a medium size instead of small; purely because I felt I had extra stretch which was needed to help me get them on in the first place. I would recommend checking the sizing guide, but I see there is no harm going 1 size up for a comfortable fit.

The feel of them are lovely. They are so soft and smooth on the legs, and they certainly don’t irritate either. I did love the way my dress just moved against it instead of sticking to it – that can happen sometimes when the tights are slightly rough on the outside and have friction between the clothing. One thing I did like is you get this smooth appearance on the legs, which is one of the benefits these are supposed to have.

Now you will see I added flash to some images, so I could show you what they look like in sunlight or when you’re in some good lighting. These so have a slight shine to them, which is even better. This also shows that it lightens up the pair slightly, making it look not so dark compared to normal daylight.

The Toes & Ankle: are great! I love that these have reinforced toes to them, which are a thicker denier strip going across the toes and slightly curved so it covers the majority on the ends. There is plenty of wiggle room for your toes to move around and breathe during the day. No pressure is added either, but I would suggest keeping your nails slightly short in these, otherwise you may feel pressure being added on longer nails.

Around the feet and ankles, these are lovely and smooth, with a gorgeous fitted finish.

The Waistband & Gusset: I have a bit to say in this section. Let me start off with the band and then work downwards. Now the band is pretty awesome as you can see by the way it’s knitted below. It’s pretty thick in terms of width and how it feels, and I gotta say it’s so comfortable. I expected this to be a pain; I would be able to see it underneath, it wouldn’t be smooth against the skin, it would cause issues etc. Basically I had no problems whatsoever. It hugged so well, to the point I actually didn’t feel it after being in it for 10+ minutes. It’s got plenty of elasticity in it as well, which I am super pleased about and there was no way these were gonna fall down or roll over itself.

Working down, you have this amazing reinforced boxer brief which has many benefits to it. Firstly, this is supposed to smooth and tone, and I felt it did that. I felt my top thigh to my waist was slightly more tucked in and smoothed out under my dress. It doesn’t pinch or squeeze you in hard which I thought it would do, but it’s a lovely subtle way of doing so without you feeling restricted.

Then we have the whole lifting effect working the tushy. You might have seen in my previous image that these had a thick denser line and then went sheer – this is basically the lifting part of it. This is supposed to sit right under your tushy (I didn’t as you don’t need to see all that on me – check out the model wearing them on the packaging for a proper look) and is supposed to help gently lift your tushy up to give it more of a perky toned look. I’m not saying this is gonna be extravagant, but it’s subtly done 🙂

My Thoughts?

I gotta say these are pretty nifty to have, and the shaper side of it actually does work. It’s not a major change like some shapewear does, but if you’re after slightly noticeable changes, then this is the one to go for. I loved them on the legs, but it’s a shame about the snags really. Otherwise I would totally recommend these!

Now these little beauties were sent by an amazing friend of mine, and I have to say when I first saw them on Instagram in white/black, I instantly fell in love with them. I thought they looked so bold and would look amazing in Spring.

However, I was sent the black pair, which is just as brilliant as this can work with me all year round!

I went a little dark today with colours; I went for an maroon/burgundy crochet jumper tucked into my faux leather shorts and added some boots into the mix. You can easily swap for flats or Timberland boots, but this worked for me today.

From The Website: Generously adorned with floral charm. These tights, featuring a modern take on the floral design, truly impress from the waist down to the toes.

20 den / Matte look / Knitted waistband

The Packaging: now these come all fancy dance … and I mean like woah! I haven’t seen this before, and you’ll see why below. It comes in a slimline box with the model in the right bottom corner and the back goes into a little more detail.

Now to get in. there are 2 tabs at the back held by the ‘quality checked’ sticker, and when you get in, you will find these wrapped in tissue paper instead. I thought this looked amazing and real luxe.

I have never seen that before, and I am loving it!

These also have slight foot and leg shaping to them, but it isn’t that visible. You can see what I mean below.

Getting Them On: now as I don’t want to ruin these in any way, I popped on my hosiery gloves and did my scrunch and roll. I took my time doing so, especially going over my anklets. I then slowly tugged them up the legs and set them in place.

On The Legs: oh my god I am loving these so much. I love how bold that floral print is, and how it works all around the legs right up to the waistband. It’s statementy, it’s bold yet classy, it works all year round and this is certainly a pair that I will be pulling out a lot more when I get a chance to be in the same pair again.

The quality of them are amazing; Wolford is known for that and I always see why. I hardly snagged these let alone ripped them. They have a good bit of stretch to them as well so they cover all the gapping parts on the legs well.

The fit of them are true to size with a little leeway for the next size up to squeeze into. I wouldn’t recommend it, but if you’re a daring person then yeah go for it. I felt they hugged the legs really well and there was no issue for them being too short, too long or too tight.

The feel of them are so lovely; they are smooth, they are soft and there is no roughness to them at all. I have done some floral pairs before, where they have a rough feel to them over the legs, and I was never keen on being in them for too long as it just bothered me. This is nothing like that, and I loved being in mine all day.

The design is just beautiful; so feminine, so alluring and a real eye-catching piece when your outfit is a little plain.

The Toes & Ankle: oh now I am loving this. Not only do they have reinforced toes, but you get the contrast toes! This basically means that you get a blocked out strip going across the toes in a thicker denier and then it works into the design. I personally love this as it just adds a little more to the design itself.

I know it would look better if it was invisible/no reinforced toe so you get the design right to the toe seam to wear open toe shoes and sandals, but this is just as good to be fair.

Around the toes, there is plenty of wiggle room and no extra pressure is added here either during the day. The same goes for the feet and ankles; they fit so well and there is no sign of wrinkles either.

The Waistband & Gusset: and once again there is no Wolford branding on the band itself. I find it super weird, but I suppose this might be the way forward for them instead?

The band itself is always great, and I never encounter any issues with it. Even with this pair, they were super snug against the waist and didn’t restrict me during the day. I felt so comfortable being in them.

The design starts from under the band and works right to the reinforced toe, so you can wear anything short with this pair without having to worry about a boxer brief.

The gusset is a small cotton patch, which is palm-sized and sits flush against the skin too.

My Thoughts?

I am loving this print, and I have truly missed being in these prints. I used to be in them all the time, every single day and I ended up switching for a while. I think it’s time to bring some more prints to the blog this year! Anyways, I love this pair and would certainly recommend them!

Bring on an office look seeing as it has been so long since I have dressed up in office attire. I decided to do a little smart casual look with this pair – I could have easily opted for a shirt but it was pretty warm so went with a t-shirt instead.

This cute pair was sent by Jonathan Aston themselves and I knew they were right up my street as soon as I saw them!

The Review

From The Website: Jonathan Aston have released one of the largest collections of abstract designs we have ever seen from them. But they also love to add something more familiar and traditional too. Here, they’ve added both. The horizontal and vertical lines are abstract and eye catching by themself, but together they form a gorgeous and classic check pattern. This is how you blend abstract and traditional together perfectly.

The Packaging: there isn’t much to their packaging, but I quite like it too. I have worn their brand for so long so I can spot their packaging from miles away. Plus this is beneficial for those who don’t really care too much about the brand and are just after the design or a pair of tights in general.

One thing I will let you know is through that back window, you can spot that there is already a small snag. I wasn’t too impressed, so I am hoping that there won’t be many more before I even get them on.

On The Legs: so after that little snag peering through, I can’t say I say anymore dotted around the legs. I took my time getting these on as they aren’t silky smooth to roll up, so you will need to take some care, especially if you wear your anklets on the inside like I do.

The quality of them are actually pretty good considering I started off with a snag. They have not snagged since and I am so thankful. I suppose it helped wearing a longer skirt to prevent that from happening to be honest!

The fit of these are great; they have plenty of length to them so I don’t need to tug them up and they have a nice amount of stretch so they cling to the legs well too! The feel of them are semi-smooth, with a slight rough feel from time to time. As it’s a matte finish, they aren’t always smooth, which can be a pain sometimes!

The design let me just say is a favourite! I love how statement-like they are but kept super classy. I don’t think I could wear these casually (well actually thinking about it I could) as it looks so formal without even trying.

This is one of those pairs that takes a simple outfit and transforms it with minimal effort.

The Toes & Ankle: and once again please excuse the non-existent nail varnish before I start getting criticised! As you can see, these have a plain toe strip going across the front and back, but there is no mention of it being reinforced – pretty confused as to why the design just didn’t start from the toe seam then! Never mind…

The toes have plenty of wiggle room and space to breathe, and there is no extra material on the sides so you get a real nice fit around the toes. The feet has a lovely fitted finish with no issues either.

Around the ankles … well all nice and smooth here too.

The Waistband: now this comes slightly higher than my belly button, but it’s not too much of an issue as it doesn’t roll down during the day when you’re walking around in them. The band is comfortable and hugs the waist real nice.

Now mentioning the noticeable – the patterns stops right at the top of the thighs, which means you get this whole section of reinforcement in a thicker denier. This means that anything super short would look real weird if you had the boxer brief part showing at any point, so something to consider there.

My Thoughts?

I gotta say I love these – a great pair for the office for sure and a real head turner. I loved the quality of them – as long as you are good to them, they can be to you! The design as well is one of my favourites to create a sophisticated look!
