one of my favorite personal headcanons about Undertale is the headcanon that sans and papyrus are not actually skeletons.
Don't get me wrong, sans introduces them as skeletons, and they definitely look the part with papyrus's spine and sans's concept art of wearing no shirt where you can see his ribcage, but they aren't human skeletons.
if they were human skeletons, they would be,,,, dead.
and dont get me wrong AGAIN, i appreciate the headcanons that they died as humans and came back or whatever, but if they did then wouldn't they technically either
A; have no soul
or
B; have a HUMAN soul?
either way, back to explaining my headcanon: i dont like to think they are actual skeletons. they are skeleton-LIKE, but not SKELETONS.
I mean, take a look at sans. from a cartoony view hes a skeleton, but other than that, he looks very little like a skeleton when compared to papyrus. his face is round and, what made me think of this headcanon in the first place, is the fact that both he and papyrus are SQUISHY.
You can see him change his facial expressions. He smiles, frowns, squints, winks, same with Papyrus. Sans literally has eyebags in his sprite, eyebags are loose skin!
Allthough they are skeleton-like, i believe they still have flesh. its why sans can bleed at the end of the game, because his "bones" are merely his version of human skin. on the inside of those thin legs and arms are veins and probably muscle too idk!
Take a look a toriel. She has fur, and horns, and a snout. She appears like a goat or cow or sheep, but she's not ACTUALLY a goat. she's a MONSTER who happens to appear closey like a goat. same thing with sans and papyrus, they are simply bone-ier than usual.
I think it makes sense. If a family of rocks can be alive and one can grow a mustache, then sans and papyrus can surely have working muscle-bones for limbs.
I mean, humans opperate pretty closely too. in a grossly simplified form of evolution, we come from monkies, right? allthough we look similar to monkies, we aren't exactly the same. we have less hair and more delicately shaped faces.
Take a look at toriel again. we all accepted that toriel and asriel and asgore are some monster subspecies of GOAT, right? but do they actually LOOK like goats?
one, the fang lips. yknow those lips. their mouths are shaped to appear to have teeth where their lips are. as far as IM concerned, at least, goats dont have sharp teeth; let alone for their lips. i also dont think goats can grow blonde or ginger hair much like asgore does, but i mean they have fur so i guess that could get long, idk. im rambling nonsense!
There's very little point to this whole post other than a cool headcanon that sans and papyrus opperate more like humans than skeletons. I know its a world full of magic and fiction so they very well could be walking corpses and etc, but another thing i always wondered was
"imagine in the pacifist route they go onto the surface and scientists examine them." i bet they'd be pretty confused when they meet skeletons who can draw blood and blink.
this also creates the fun idea that sans and papyrus have actual eyeballs and that sans's lit pupils aren't magic light at all, but rather just a natural iris that's bright white and glows. and for his all black eyes, maybe he has really tiny pupils that can expand super wide. idk!
this post isn't meant to be serious either. im not saying "they aren't skeletons and you're wrong for thinking they are!!" nah, im just rambling about something ive thought about quite frequently.

How do you headcanon his death
His death-death? His post-death death? The death after death?
Sorry, I was having fun with that.
(gore, body horror, torture, vivisection mentions, implied noncon, etc under cut, just be cautious)
I love all the angst around the idea of his parents or Valerie killing him, either not knowing who Phantom was until Danny disappears with him and they're forced to make the connection or being faced with the reality of what they've done in the moment, watching him go from Phantom to Danny as he bleeds out from the wounds they inflicted on him.
And hoo boy, vivisection deaths are fun. Especially if it's not his parents and instead someone else entirely, the Guys in White or a different agency, it doesn't matter. I'm wild about the inherent dehumanization of those deaths. Bonus points if someone comes to save him but arrives too late.
I also really just like mundane deaths caused by humans. A mugger who thought he was an easy victim. A hit-and-run. Some sick and disgusting pervert who tossed his corpse in a dumpster a week later. A bullet to the head, a knife to his throat, whatever. It's fascinating to think about the incredible things he's done, the horrific things he's survived, the monsters he's beaten. . . . . . only for it all to end at the hands of some stupid, cruel human who had no idea who he was.
My favorite method though. . . . . . is just physical rejection of his very nature and existence. The idea of someone straddling the line between life and death like that is so fascinating just because of how inherently contradictory it is. I don't think living bodies could handle that, could handle having a dead soul trapped in living flesh. And I think he would just break down on a fundamental level.
Maybe it would come in the form of some long and painful illness, diagnosed as something mundane like cancer because humans have never seen what he has before.
Or maybe his body gets with the program, decides that having a dead soul must mean that it's actually a dead body, and acts accordingly. Maybe his body just starts decomposing with him still in it, organs stopping, flesh rotting, blood settling, and rigor mortis setting in. Maybe he doesn't even notice, because what are those things to the dead? Why should he care?
Or maybe it literally just falls apart, the ghostly half literally ripping him to pieces from the inside out, trying to fight its way out of its self-imposed prison of fragile flesh. Maybe cracks spread across his skin, sickly green light and mist peeking out of them. Maybe his body just steadily starts burning away into nothingness and leaves pieces of Phantom shining through in their place.
This got long lmao. Just generally speaking, I LOVE Danny dying in pretty much every way as long as it hurts. The exception is that I don't like ANY of the ghosts killing him, even Vlad. It just doesn't interest me.
