🎯 Canadian News Publishers Sue OpenAI Over Alleged Copyright Infringement
A group of Canadian news publishers, including The Canadian Press, Torstar, Globe and Mail, Postmedia, and CBC/Radio-Canada, has sued OpenAI for allegedly using their content without permission to train its ChatGPT AI system.
The publishers claim OpenAI violates copyright laws by scraping content and profiting without compensating creators, undermining significant investments in journalism. They emphasized the need for AI companies to respect intellectual property and operate lawfully.
OpenAI responded, stating its models are trained on publicly available data under fair use principles and that it collaborates with publishers, offering opt-out options for content use.
This lawsuit is the first of its kind in Canada, though similar cases are ongoing in the U.S., including one by The New York Times. While some organizations pursue legal action, others, like The Associated Press and News Corp., have signed licensing agreements with OpenAI.
Canada's Online News Act mandates compensation for news use by platforms like Google and Meta but has yet to clarify its application to AI systems.
