This is the second article of the two-part series of conversations with Aditya Birla’s Group Data and Analytics cell (GDNA) — the analytics and AI arm of India’s mightiest multinational company which has strong roots in cement, aluminium and copper, carbon black and other industries like fashion and textiles, chemicals, telecom and financial services. In our previous article, we looked at how 2017 was an inflection point for the multi-billion dollar corporation when it adopted an inside-out approach to digital transformation — modernising the core system and architecting their business for change by tapping into data, artificial intelligence and digital analytics.  Now, we turn the spotlight on Bengaluru-based 50-strong digital analytics team —  that  is building a future-ready digital enterprise. The Aditya Birla Group operates across multiple sectors and amid its diversity — it’s the GDNA cell that is providing a clear route to value creation by building strategic digital assets which are delivering significantly higher returns.  The GDNA team helmed by Deep Thomas, Chief Data & Analytics Officer follows a centralised operating model — a common talent pool leveraged across group companies that works across multiple business segments, both B2B and B2C. By developing existing capabilities as well as strengthening core capabilities, the prolific analytics team is helping the parent group to succeed in the next decade and putting the parent group in the growth mode.  The team has built a strong data analytics platform which can support day-to-day analytics decisions. The platform “Nucleus” built on AWS cloud is governed by a strict security and governance framework and delivers more agility to stakeholders across the group. The build vs buy decision proved to be a game-changer with the in-built platform giving business heads the security and comfort of their own on-premise data centre.  Analytics India Magazine spoke to Purnesh Gali who’s leading analytics initiatives at Hindalco to understand why the GDNA team eschewed solutions from big data vendors like Cloudera and Hortonworks to build the complete analytics ecosystem from scratch. “This was 2017 and the concept of the cloud was not very well-understood. A couple of years back when the industry talked mostly about on-premise solutions, the GDNA team knew the future was in the cloud. That’s how we decided it’s best to build a hybrid cloud infrastructure. Now we are thinking of taking a multi-cloud approach,” shared Gali.  Building A Strong Business Case For AI and Digital Analytics

So, how does one actually make a case for AI and digital analytics at a conglomerate with a strong brand identity in both B2B and B2C businesses? Hindalco Industries and UltraTech Cement occupy a significant share in the conglomerate’s overall portfolio and that’s where the GDNA team started. “The process started by identifying top priorities for these two business groups, understanding the problems and requirements from business heads and then work on specific proof of concept (POC) projects that can yield high-return and high-growth opportunities,” said Nitin Sareen, SVP - Head of Analytics Solutions & Delivery.  Sareen shared a few advanced analytics use cases around improving quality and assurance in ABG’s manufacturing and asset-heavy industries. “At Hindalco, we started with the quality of finished goods. The company produces a variety of products like extrusions, rolled products, foil, etc which if they don’t meet the quality standard will come back as a defect. For these products we looked at surface defects and breakage” said Sareen.  In heavy industries, product quality is measured in terms of defects and the group is already seeing a 4-5% reduction in defects. “In the context of manufacturing and metals industry, optimising and reducing these defects can result in significant improvement and these numbers are big enough to move the needle,” said Gali, who’s leading the metals initiatives.  The GDNA team is working very closely with the Chief Digital Officer at Hindalco Industries in their entire journey of digitisation, driving analytics adoption and building capability. “We started this journey about one year ago and our goal is to make every person on the shop floor operating the machine use the data to make his/her day-to-day decisions,” added Gali.   “The team is deeply engaged with UltraTech cement to deliver high impact results across the front-end and back-end processes to optimize various business KPIs including market share, logistics cost and operational efficiency” shared Bhargab Dutta, Practice Head- Manufacturing and Supply Chain Analytics, Aditya Birla Group.  Another big-ticket project is freight optimisation for UltraTech Cement. “The idea was how to reduce logistics cost for finished goods which in this case is cement. Cement travel in terms of volume-weighted — the longer the route the more you pay. The two factors resulting in an increase in cost are the overall distance and the volume of the unit. The team worked on identifying the PTPA - per tonne per kilometre rate better known as freight rate to bring down the costs,” shared Sareen. In addition to finding the best freight rate, the team optimally derived the best network so that the overall volume-weighted distances are minimised without hampering the network distribution.  Sayani Nag, Head of Analytics - Retail Value Chain at Aditya Birla Group tells us it’s not always about inventing the coolest technologies. “While AI and cognitive technologies are disruptive forces, it is also important to have a deep understanding of business to create meaningful transformation,” she added. That’s why at ABG, digital analytics is supporting business strategy in two distinct ways — pursuing new business models based on AI-driven insights and secondly, making core business processes more data-driven with innovative solutions around price forecasting, sales forecasting, customer churn and promotions, logistics, predictive maintenance and automating margin decisions.  Developing A Platform With Products and Analytical Assets

Modularising AI assets for reusability has become the go-to approach for highly diverse multinationals. At ABG, the analytics team is building a pool of algorithmic assets for each business sector in the group to drive substantial growth. The team has adopted a platform approach to solutions by modularising core components that can be deployed across domains with minor customisations.  AIM spoke to Naveen Xavier, VP & Head Data & Analytics Products who gave us a lowdown on how the Products team is putting the group into the growth mode by building cutting-edge products that can be applied to the domain and scaled enterprise-wide. “The idea is to develop a framework for building solutions that can be extended to any business domain without changing its existing functionality. This process of building business agnostic capabilities starts by writing software that scales well and can be reused in different configurations to derive new outcomes,” said Xavier.  In a span of six months, the team has implemented GPU and CPU based solutions around facial recognition, computer vision and NLU. The Products team built a computer vision platform VEDA — Video Enabled Decision and Alerts “in precisely six months from the ground up” currently deployed in four plants at Hindalco and customised for the entire group. “Within a year, VEDA will be scaled to 300 manufacturing plants of Aditya Birla Group. From a manufacturing standpoint, safety is a very big concern and we want to ensure our workers and contract workers associated with the group should not face any safety-related issues,” said Xavier. VEDA delivers intangible amount of cost benefits by monitoring fire, oil spillage, crowd formation, people movement in unsafe zones and whether workers are wearing safety gear on the factory floors.  The same solution is utilised for monitoring other assets, especially in remote locations. For example, drones feed from mining sites are analysed for volumetric analysis and in the case of new plant construction to track construction progress.  Up next, Xavier tells us about the facial recognition solution which can map emotions and recommend the next best action to sales representatives in 275 Pantaloons stores across India. In fashion retail stores, business heads have access to the customer’s transaction history but they lack contextual data on consumer behaviour and what actually goes into the making of purchase decisions. “There are multiple instances where customers come into the stores, try out products but don’t make any real purchase. This data is not available, so we are looking at how we can process video feeds from retail stores to capture customers walking in, which products are tried out, which part of the store is most visited,” told Xavier. The tool also performs emotion detection by recording the expression of customers, to better understand whether they are happy with the services.  The next product -- an NLP-based solution implemented in call centre contextualises conversation and assists call centre agents with the next best action and respond effectively. The solution is one of the best ways to optimise Average Handling Time (AHT), improve customer satisfaction and response measurement. “The solution can be applied to analyse social media feedback, service feedback and product quality,” shared Xavier.  Driving Business Transformation With Bleeding Edge Tech  One of the strongest elements of success has been pursuing leading-edge technology at ABG. “It’s not just about ensuring a fast implementation and direct impact on both top and bottom line, we also have to ensure scalability, resilience and performance of our platforms,” said Manigandan Venkataraman, Lead Product Engineering at Aditya Birla Group.  For example, the team leverages cutting-edge AI techniques like deep learning, Bayesian machine learning, reinforcement learning, real-time anomaly detection, topological data analysis, etc. to increase shop floor productivity, ensure worker safety and deliver quality improvements, manage dynamic pricing and improve S&OP through demand forecasting which affects both top-line and bottom-line profitability, shared Sandesh Nandagawe, Practice Leader for collaborations with internal group functions and optimization expert. For specific use cases, they use the best of breed open source technologies like R, Python and AI frameworks like TensorFlow. They are also experimenting with AI hardware like Nvidia DGX-1 to achieve new results and build new experience layers on top of existing products.  Open Innovation

ABG setup BizLabs an in-house accelerator to catalyse a startup ecosystem that can develop solutions in the area of FinTech and Industry 4.0.  ABG is driving innovation internally and partnering with the ecosystem including academia and startups through hackathons and innovation challenges to accelerate the AI adoption journey and capture growth opportunities. GDNA cell is actively partnering with 10-15 AI/ ML startups that bring unique capabilities and solutions to the table. “We are also collaborating with cross-industry players with extensive domain knowledge that can be used to drive additional value. Our group is partnering with academic institutions across India, the US and Israel to explore new opportunities in emerging technologies,” said Shankar Sivaramakrishnan, Practice Lead, AVP - Group Data & Analytics at Aditya Birla Management Corporation.  Managing Capability Building  While India does have the richest pool of technical talent, data savvy talent is not easy to find, especially people who have analytics and domain knowledge. In the first post, we discussed how attracting the best talent with strong domain expertise across finance, consulting, e-commerce, heavy industries and retail proved to be a recipe for success at ABG.  At ABG, the expectations are more specialized and demanding. The team follows a very selective approach to hiring -- onboarding bilinguals who pack data science and domain expertise as well. “We aren’t just looking for a data scientist who has done a bunch of online courses but looking at domain expertise, especially manufacturing since 80-90% of our group business is that. So that narrows down the kind of resource we are looking for and there is a very small list out there in the market in terms of hires,” opines Gali. The team has a rich talent base both on the data science and data engineering side.  ABG is also one of the few mega giants offering professionals the opportunity to pick multi-sectoral knowledge. “We are getting people who are good with data science concepts and also enabling them to take up domain knowledge. I believe this is something very few companies can offer,” added Gali. The company conducts regular hackathons ⁠— MindSparks and MindFire internally and MindBlaze for external participants to work on specific business problems and foster a culture of innovation.  In addition to this, there are regular internal workshops aimed at capability building. “For example, we had folks from GE who have been working on advanced concepts like topological data modelling conduct a workshop internally. We also have regular workshops with AWS and Azure where they talk about efficient production,” shared Gali. Wrapping Up  Leading multinationals embrace digital transformation by creating a centralised AI group to implement AI at scale. However, that’s just one part of the puzzle. To be a market leader, conglomerates need to combine advanced technologies like AI/ ML along with domain knowledge, build effective collaboration and partnership management capabilities with group businesses/ subsidiaries to respond effectively to changing market dynamics. Microsoft continues to recruit top talent to build a world-class AI R&D community in Taiwan
On the eve of its 30th anniversary, Microsoft Taiwan is pleased to announce that the AI R&D Center in Taiwan, which was established in 2018, is expanding and relocating, a year and a half after its grand opening.
Microsoft is investing more resources into Taiwan’s AI industry.  In the era of AI, where software and hardware integration are inseparable, Microsoft will continue to work with software and hardware partners to build an AI ecosystem of the next generate and create the next momentum for Taiwan’s technology industry through development of pioneering technology.
Wen-Sheng Tseng, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, said at the opening ceremony that “Microsoft spared no effort to work with Taiwan’s industry, government and academic circles in technology cooperation.” He added that “We are looking forward to seeing that after the expansion and relocation of the Microsoft AI R&D Center, it can drive the next upgrade of Taiwanese AI talents and technology, enhance Taiwan’s competitiveness and realize Taiwan’s vision of becoming Asia-Pacific AI talent pool.”

Microsoft AI R&D Center’s 3 areas of focus
 As the starting point for Microsoft’s long-term AI program in Taiwan, the Microsoft AI R&D Center will focus on the following three areas of R&D.
Computer vision
Microsoft has set up a computer vision technology research team in Taiwan to work with Microsoft’s research and engineering teams around the world. Computer vision technology can be applied to vertical industry applications such as quality management, detection of smart manufacturing, automated production line management, and textile industry dye management. In smart cities scenarios, computer vision can process urban traffic management and public security maintenance work. In smart agriculture, computer vision can greatly improve crop growth management, cultivation and identification. Computer vision can further promote the development of smart factories, smart cities and smart agriculture in Taiwan
User intention recognition:
User intention is a very important part of AI. This technology subtype creates applications that meet the user’s needs by understanding users and building on their preferences to form intention models. At the beginning, the Microsoft AI R&D Center used Bing advertising as the first area for the application. In the future, the center will expand cooperation with various industries and develop various AI application solutions.
Applications of AI to vertical industries:
Implementing the application of AI in vertical industries is an important goal of the AI R&D center in the medium to long term. In this branch of research, Microsoft will conduct a comprehensive study on industries such as “Smart Manufacturing” and “Smart Healthcare” as mentioned in the 5+2 Industrial Innovation Plan proposed by Taiwan’s Executive Yuan.

Security management such as access control systems
Windows Hello and 3D anti-spoofing technology strengthen the level of security protection. Windows Hello is a world-leading face verification system for unlocking devices developed by Microsoft. It adopts deep learning technology, allowing users to log into the system easily, quickly and securely without entering complicated passwords. 3D anti-spoofing technology is where Microsoft combines the latest deep learning neural network, a 3D depth sensor camera and its Azure cloud computing platform to create a powerful anti-spoofing system. This technology can enhance the security of biometric authentication systems such as access control, which further prevents malicious attacks from hackers.
Text recognition and digitization of paper documents:
Microsoft offers its state-of-the-art optical character recognition and receipt understanding technologies to enable the digital transformation of business operations. The system can identify the text content in receipts, business cards, invoices and other forms. Although the text may be distorted, faded, or blemished, they can still be accurately identified and processed according to the semantics of the text. In the future, various industries can apply this core technology to digitize paper documents or to enable scenarios such as digital government, smart factories and smart cities. Receipt understanding is a natural language processing technology developed by the Microsoft AI R&D Center in Taiwan. Assisted by optical character recognition, this technology enables computers to understand the complex structures and values in receipts and automatically summarize various receipt attributes. This advanced service that combines computer vision and natural language processing can help improve the efficiency of accounting and expense management.

LONDON, United Kingdom — BoF has unveiled its selection of the world’s best fashion schools, employing a new approach that does away with numerical rankings and focuses instead on helping students assess which programme will best prepare them for their chosen career in fashion.
The fourth edition of BoF’s assessment of global fashion schools maintains its rigorous statistical approach, incorporating feedback from 13,500 students and alumni, 66 schools and 115 recruitment and industry professionals.
In addition to this input, we formed the BoF Education Council, a committee of 12 global experts in fashion education and the fashion industry. They became our trusted guides as we sought to completely re-imagine how we analysed and presented our results.

On Finding the Right School

“Remember [that] the course, not just the school, has to be right for you — it’s not always about you being right for the college. Many students try to talk themselves into what they think will be the best course — it’s no good doing that. The place has got to be right for you, because only then will you be able to learn successfully and grow.”

“It’s important for young students to first know why they are studying fashion design, because many design students like fashion design because they have a misunderstanding of the industry. They don’t really know what design means to them, before they apply to the schools.”

“Be mindful that outside of the design roles, there are a growing number of positions in digital commerce, digital marketing, tech, the new retail, and the direct-to-consumer frontier of that. Up to 70 percent of the positions we hear about in fashion are not design positions, and it’s a valuable [thing] for future talents to be aware of.”

“Think about what you are going to bring to your own learning experience. You have to be prepared to get stuck in and work hard. Going to a big-name school doesn't guarantee you a successful career. The best green innovations of the week
Each week, many eye-catching and potentially transformational innovations emerge that could help businesses and nations accelerate the transition to a low-carbon, resource-efficient economy. And each week, edie rounds-up six of the best.
This week’s innovations could drive significant sustainability progress across the catering, wine and EV sectors
In a week that has seen information on water scarcity pushed to the wider public as part of World Water Day, it is yet again important to realise that planetary boundaries are being pushed to the extreme.
Whether its England’s severe case of water stress or the inevitability of a sharp rise in Arctic temperatures, it seems the onus is on nations and businesses to reverse climate change at an accelerated pace.
Innovation will have a key role to play in this transition. Here, edie rounds up some of the low-carbon and resource-efficient innovations that could become vital tools in the global quest to combat climate change. Enjoy.
Clean power from ice cream waste
Regular readers of edie will be well aware of the negative carbon impact of food waste, and that the scale of the world’s food waste mountain is only set to grow without ambitious actions from all areas of society. But this waste is also a missed business opportunity, with around $1trn believed to be lost to the global economy due to a linear economy for foodstuffs every year – equivalent to 1.5% of the world’s GDP.
In order to recapture some of this value, Yorkshire-based ice cream manufacturer R&R (maker of Nestle’s Fab and Rowntrees’ Fruit Pastille Lollies) has partnered with waste management giant Veolia and financier Iona Capital to convert waste by-product from its manufacturing processes into clean energy. The solution involves sending the by-product to an anaerobic digestion facility, where it is placed in an oxygen-free container to break down naturally.
This chemical process involved in the container naturally produces biomethane, which will be sold to the National Grid and used to heat homes across the UK. The first of this biomethane will be sold this summer. R&R estimates that 25 tonnes of chocolate ice cream by-product processed in this way could heat one average home for a year.  
AI-enabled food waste bins
Also on the topic of food waste, London-based tech startup Winnow has this week revealed that a real-life trial of its digital bins for food waste across Ikea’s new Greenwich store has proven successful. Called Winnow Vision, the bin uses cameras, weighing scales, sensors and an artificial intelligence (AI) platform to measure not only the amount of food waste which is deposited, but which items are most commonly wasted.
The device is pre-programmed to recognise most common foods, but also has a machine learning function which enables it to “remember” other items which may be specific to certain businesses. In Ikea, for example, it can recognise the difference between the retailer’s meat and vegetarian meatballs and hotdogs.
Data collected through the bins is relayed to users via a digital platform, enabling firms across the food and drink, hospitality and leisure and retail sectors to track their food waste footprint in real-time. This enables buyers to better adjust the quantities and types of food they purchase, in order to minimise their food waste footprint, and can help sustainability professionals develop more targeted behaviour change schemes around food.
Air monitoring backpacks
Air quality has continued to hit the headlines in recent weeks, the UK’s Clean Air Summit in London last month having been compounded by a string of air pollution warnings across key towns and cities. The good news is that a number of innovative solutions which seek to mitigate the health impacts of airborne pollutants have begun to hit global markets or become more widely available, including air-filtering curtains, “breathing” CityTrees and pollutant-trapping t-shirts.
Building on this momentum, British engineering giant Dyson has developed a 1kg portable air quality sensor, which enables users can monitor their exposure to harmful particulates. In order to test the sensors in a real-world environment, the firm has developed a range of backpacks with them built-in and distributed the bags to primary-aged schoolchildren in five schools across Greenwich, Hammersmith and Fulham, Haringey, Richmond and Southwark. Data from the backpacks will be collected and monitored by researchers at Kings College London and shared with City Hall, so the Mayor of London can develop campaigns and policies which can help minimise the amount of exposure which children in the capital have to particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2).
The trial, which was jointly developed by City Hall and C40 Cities, will run for three months. It is being delivered by a consortium led by the Environmental Defense Fund Europe (EDFE) and is mostly funded by the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation.
Climate-positive wine
Sustainability professionals who like to enjoy a tipple have been in luck in 2019 so far, with recent sustainable beverage announcements having included a new closed-loop gin made from grape waste and a fresh sustainable coffee sourcing pledge from Kahlua.
Continuing this trend, Californian vineyard group Bonterra Organic has revealed that it is developing a “climate-positive” farming and manufacturing process for wine. The method involves using pesticide-free and water-efficient agriculture practices which boost soil quality, therefore boosting the soil’s carbon sequestering properties to the point that it offsets emissions at other stages of wine production.
Specifically, the regenerative model involves applying organic compost, planting cover crops and planning sheep grazing. At the same time, Bonterra runs a series of wildlife and biodiversity conservation programmes, keeping around half of the vineyard in a “natural state”. A similar model of regenerative farming has previously been used by the North Face, which now sells garments made from “climate-positive” wool.
Grid-balancing EV chargers
It’s been a big week for electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure news here at edie, with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) unveiling a “smart” charging network at its Gaydon facility, Toyota confirming plans to host a hydrogen refuelling “hub” in Australia and pan-European charging network IONITY providing a progress update on its mission to electrify long-distance journeys across the continent.
It is timely, then, that the edie newsdesk also received information this week regarding a new isolation transformer technology which claims to minimise the risk of open-circuit faults within charging systems, while helping grids cope with increased power demands due to EV charging. Is Developed by Staffordshire-based electrical solutions firm Matt:e and called the O-PEN, the device is able to detect load imbalances and level them by isolating the incoming supply either as a whole, or in separate loads.
Each of the units is capable of supporting up to three 32amp EV charging points. Matt:e claims that the technology could be used to support caravan hook-ups, mobile power generation and buildings used within the agriculture sector as more renewables come onto the grid.
NASA-certified showers
With today (22 March) being World Water Day, and with the chair of the UK’s Environment Agency having recently warned that England could run short of water in 25 years, water stewardship will undoubtedly be at the forefront of many edie readers’ minds this week.
To compound the actions being taken by policymakers and businesses to tackle the challenges surrounding water stress, innovations in this space are also emerging at a pace. Previous editions of this roundup having featured technologies such as waterless toilets, desalination gel and water-efficient textile dyes.
A more recent launch is that of the Oas shower, which claims to use up to 90% less water and 80% less energy than conventional models. Developed by Swedish startup Orbital Systems, the device deposits just under three litres of purified water during a ten-minute shower. “Smart” sensors within the shower, connected to the cloud, analyse the running water 20 times per second, enabling the dirty water to be pumped up for cleaning and reheating before being recirculated to the shower head.
At the end of the shower cycle, the water is captured by the device for re-purification and reheating. Real-time information regarding how much energy and water the user has saved by using the product is relayed via a digital interface in the shower control, which is lit using LED technology.
The shower recently launched commercially across the US and EU markets and is available to both business and domestic customers, following certification from NASA. Orbital Systems claims the technology is suitable for hospitality and leisure firms, property developers, individuals and companies which produce camping solutions.

Artificial Intelligence: Opening New Vistas
The rapid expansion of technology and digital applications that characterises the ‘4th Industrial Revolution’, is changing the way we live, work – and learn. It’s a revolution driven by the fusion and amplification of emerging breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, automation and robotics, and multiplied by the far-reaching connectivity between billions of people with mobile devices that offer unprecedented access to data and knowledge. Autonomous vehicles, cloud computing, robotic nurses and surgeons, chat bots etc. are manifestations of this growing trend.
Online shopping, online games, email, social networking and media sites all have AI embedded into their applications, and the list of products and services continues to grow. Homes, cars, and financial and healthcare services are embracing machine learning to improve products and services.
Education systems, teachers and curricula need to be responsive to these changes. The 4th IR creates a demand for new skills and competencies, while automation and AI puts jobs at risk. This then creates a need to train and retrain people to utilise new technologies. National education systems have the opportunity to focus in on and hone inherently human competencies that are crucial in this rapidly shifting environment, such as problem solving, communication, critical thinking and collaboration.
Technologies, such as AI, can be utilised to support formal education and lifelong learning by promoting the development of adaptive learning environments, with tools that are flexible, inclusive, personalised and engaging. Examples include blended learning spaces where digital technologies and traditional classroom activities complement each other, and personal AI tutors that can strengthen inclusiveness by providing intelligent support specifically tailored for each learner’s needs. However, AI tools lack the socio-emotional interactive communication skills that teachers can use to get the best out of their students. To maximise its potential, education systems must not get seduced by technology; the focus should be on learning.

A career in artificial intelligence can be realised within a variety of settings including private companies, public organisations, education, the arts, healthcare facilities, government agencies and the military.
