no the ai overview is the worst thing ever created actually. i try to do one (1) little self-help tech support. "how to X but NO Y"
AI overview:
in order to X, use Y...
im just like. can you. CAN YOU. CAN YOUR AI FUCKING READ GOOGLE. CAN IT READ WORDS. WHAT DO THOSE WORDS FUCKING SAY. IT HAS NEVER BEEN USEFUL, A SIGNLE TIME, EVER. even when it's RIGHT i have to keep searching to confirm bc it's so unreliable.
i want it gone so goddamn badly. this is how they get us. this is how we die. its gonna be 2.99 (monthly subscription ofc) to remove the ai overview and that'll only be the beginning... the sponsored results on google have already gone to shit years ago...
you get me,,,, i kind of understand why the elon musk dick riders are hyper about misinformation, the death of creativity, the rapid degradation of our environment, etc. but i simply don't comprehend how people can be, like, completely passive about being forced to use tools that actively make a daily experience quantifiably worse. i look forward to fucking our robot overlords after they gain full sentience as much as the next guy, but that'll be after they've stopped regurgitating info off of reddit. until that happens i'm stuck tagging everything i search with -ai for the foreseeable future.

Universal Life Insurance Market Overview: Trends and Future Outlook
The universal life insurance market has evolved significantly in recent years, adapting to changing consumer preferences, technological advancements, and regulatory updates. As a flexible form of permanent life insurance, universal life insurance offers both death benefit protection and a cash value component, making it a popular choice for individuals seeking long-term financial planning solutions. In this article, we explore the current market trends, growth drivers, and the future outlook of the universal life insurance market.
Tumblr media
Understanding Universal Life Insurance
Universal life insurance is a type of permanent life insurance that allows policyholders to adjust their premiums and death benefits over time. It also accumulates cash value on a tax-deferred basis, which can be accessed through withdrawals or loans. Its flexibility and long-term benefits make it appealing to a wide range of consumers—from young professionals to retirees—who want both life coverage and a wealth-building component.
Key Trends in the Universal Life Insurance Market
1. Increased Demand for Flexible Financial Products
In today’s uncertain economic environment, consumers are seeking financial products that can adapt to their changing life circumstances. The ability to modify premiums and coverage amounts has positioned universal life insurance as an ideal solution for those desiring adaptability and control.
2. Growing Focus on Retirement Planning
As life expectancy increases and traditional pension plans decline, more individuals are turning to universal life policies as part of their retirement strategy. The cash value accumulation feature provides a supplementary income stream, making these policies attractive to pre-retirees.
3. Integration of Digital Platforms
Digital transformation is reshaping the insurance landscape. Insurers are increasingly using online platforms and mobile apps to offer customized quotes, streamline application processes, and manage policies. This shift is improving customer engagement and expanding access to universal life insurance products.
4. Product Innovation and Customization
Insurance providers are introducing hybrid policies and add-on riders—such as long-term care benefits and accelerated death benefits—to cater to the unique needs of policyholders. This innovation is driving interest in universal life insurance among younger demographics and high-net-worth individuals.
Market Drivers
Rising Awareness of Financial Security: The aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic has heightened awareness about financial preparedness, encouraging individuals to secure life insurance with investment potential.
Favorable Tax Treatment: The tax-deferred growth of the cash value component is a significant incentive for policyholders.
Expansion in Emerging Markets: Increasing financial literacy and a growing middle class in regions such as Asia-Pacific and Latin America are contributing to the global expansion of the universal life insurance market.
Challenges Facing the Market
Despite strong growth prospects, the market faces a few challenges:
Complexity of Products: The structure of universal life policies can be difficult for some consumers to understand without proper guidance.
Interest Rate Sensitivity: Returns on the cash value component are influenced by prevailing interest rates, which can affect overall policy performance.
Regulatory Scrutiny: Enhanced regulations around transparency and consumer protection are requiring insurers to revise product disclosures and marketing practices.
Future Outlook of the Universal Life Insurance Market
The future of the universal life insurance market looks promising, with several positive developments on the horizon:
Technological Advancements: AI and big data analytics will further enhance underwriting accuracy, policy customization, and risk assessment.
Increased Market Penetration: With growing awareness and digital outreach, insurers are expected to penetrate underserved and rural markets, particularly in developing regions.
Sustainable and ESG-Focused Policies: Consumers are beginning to favor insurers that align with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, prompting insurers to develop socially responsible product portfolios.
Conclusion
The universal life insurance market is poised for significant growth, driven by demand for flexible, long-term financial protection and investment options. As insurers continue to innovate and embrace digital tools, the market will likely witness increased adoption among diverse demographic groups. With a favorable regulatory environment and evolving consumer expectations, universal life insurance will remain a key pillar in personal financial planning across global markets.

Market Trends:
The Shared Mobility Market is undergoing a significant change towards the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies, which will transform the user experience and operational efficiency. This trend is especially visible in the ride-hailing and car-sharing industries, where AI-powered algorithms are being used to optimize route planning, predict demand trends, and improve rider-driver matching. Leading shared mobility platforms, for example, are using machine learning models to analyze historical data and real-time traffic information, resulting in more accurate estimated time of arrival (ETAs) and dynamic pricing strategies. The use of AI chatbots and virtual assistants in mobile applications improves customer assistance and engagement. This trend not only enhances user satisfaction but also helps service providers optimize fleet utilization and lower operational expenses.
Market Segmentation:
The Ride-hailing segment dominates the Shared Mobility Market, driven by convenience, cost-effectiveness, and widespread availability. The ride-hailing category has emerged as the dominating force in the Shared Mobility Market, accounting for over 60% of total market share by 2023. This domination is due mostly to the convenience, cost-effectiveness, and ubiquitous availability of ride-hailing services in both urban and suburban locations. The segment has seen major technological developments, with the addition of AI-driven matching algorithms, dynamic pricing models, and in-app safety measures that improve the entire user experience.
In recent news, top ride-hailing services have prioritized expanding their service offerings to incorporate multi-modal transportation alternatives. For example, a big global player recently added public transportation information and micro-mobility alternatives to its app, allowing users to plan end-to-end journeys with ease. This move has positioned ride-hailing firms as comprehensive mobility solutions, strengthening their market domination.
The corporate sector has also played a significant role in the growth of the ride-hailing business. Many businesses are cooperating with ride-hailing firms to give mobility perks to their employees, thereby eliminating traditional corporate fleet management systems. According to a recent industry survey, 72% of businesses in large metropolitan centers already include ride-hailing services as part of their employee perks package, indicating substantial B2B demand in this sub-segment.

Kisekae Insights #49: Kamen Rider Zi-O Part 7 - A look at the characters
Tumblr media
Now that we have covered the entire plot of my Zi-O adaptation, I’m going to do a quick overview of the main characters in it. Some details about each of the characters can be seen throughout the last 6 parts, but this post is dedicated to summarising them in detail.
While I have maintained the use of adaptation names for certain characters, some characters have been referred to by their original names throughout this mini-series for Kisekae Insights. I’ll elaborate more on this as I go through them, but the tl;dr is that I’m appealing to readers’ familiarity with names of their original counterparts.
Sougo Tokiwa
Sougo Tokiwa is a parallel isotope of Hiroki Ichigo taken from July 2012 (at the end of the Three Kingdoms series). After finding himself in the Ohma War of 2068, he ends up in July 2018 with amnesia, hence why he is only 15 years old at the start of the series and not 21.
In the original series, Sougo appears to act like the Sentai Red Rangers of recent years - overtly positive with a repetitive catchphrase, abstract goals and a lack of character flaws. At least in the adaptation I can attribute this to Sougo’s amnesia and having dreams beamed into his head from the future, plus his prime self’s autism playing a significant role in his cloudcuckoolander personality.
Sougo will go out of his way to help people wherever he can, as that is what he believes a king should do. This goes to the point where he would even go so far as to help his own enemies, such examples being convincing his other self that there are people who care about him, encouraging Kensuke to keep fighting despite his ideal timeline no longer coming to pass, and helping Swartz realise that he does care for his family and that despite being a rogue AI program, he has a heart (he also prioritised this over 2012 Akari which goes to show how much an idiot like Sougo can care about people).
The other Sougo Tokiwa (Ohma Zi-O)
The other Sougo is native to the Zi-O timeline and is also the one who would be involved in the bus accident in 2009 and become the Ohma Zi-O we see in 2068. The main Sougo’s interactions with Ohma Zi-O alludes to how the latter crossed paths with his main self several times in the past.
After having lost his parents, the other Sougo gets a drive to set off on his own and become king, but over the next nine years, the pain of leaving Parker behind and losing three female companions made him a cold and bitter figure. It’s only thanks to meeting the main Sougo that the other Sougo begins to loosen up and appreciate that there are people who still care about him.
When the main Sougo becomes Ohma Zi-O, the other Sougo tries to remind him of his dream to become the nicest and kindest demonic overlord, but in his defeat, he senses a deeper sorrow from the main Sougo than he had experienced before. When the main Sougo makes his decision to destroy the timeline, the older Ohma Zi-O happily accepts this as he can be set free from his pain and sorrow.
Geiz Myoukouin
Geiz Myoukouin, also known as Andrew Cui, was an officer from the mainland in 2011. Late that year, he worked with Yuki Nagato to resurrect Parker Zhou before she sent him into the future to answer an influence coming from it, becoming a parallel isotope in the process. Geiz ended up in 2063 with his memories scrambled and joined the Resistance. Five years later, their forces would suffer near annihilation at the hands of Ohma Zi-O, which led Geiz to steal a Ziku Driver and some Ridewatches from him before taking a Time Mazine and heading to the past.
Geiz’s motivation to defeat Sougo comes from his serious and blunt attitude; while he was hostile to Sougo at first, he warms to his optimism and kindness, going so far as to convince him to give up the Ziku Driver and his dream of becoming a king. When that failed in part due to the Time Jackers’ actions, Geiz ended up convincing Sougo to become a king again, promising to defeat him if he became Ohma Zi-O. In the original, Geiz in his dying breaths would eventually trust Sougo enough to become the nicest and kindest demonic overlord as Ohma Zi-O. In the adaptation, however, Geiz makes good on his promise to defeat Sougo when he becomes the vilest and evilest demonic overlord, though his intent isn’t to kill him, but to save him.
When Kensuke arrived with the prophecy that Geiz would become a saviour, his stance towards Sougo becoming Ohma Zi-O wavered. After Geiz elects to defy Kensuke’s prophecy and fight together with Sougo, he seeks a future where he can become a saviour alongside Sougo as the demonic overlord.
Luna
Luna, real name Mahina, was the daughter of the virtual Hiroki and Fifi Forget-me-not in the supercomputer on Never Land. After having her memories and powers sealed by Swartz as a little girl, Mahina was thrown into the Time Vortex and ended up in the year 2058, where she was taken in by the Resistance and given the name Luna. Ten years later, she was saved from being turned to dust by Ohma Zi-O when her guardian pushed her into a nearby trench.
As Geiz travelled back in time in an effort to kill Sougo before he became Ohma Zi-O, Luna took a Time Mazine and followed him, managing to rescue Sougo and get him away from Geiz. Her approach to dealing with Ohma Zi-O was to prevent him from becoming Zi-O in the first place instead of outright killing him. When that failed, Luna was convinced that Sougo would not become the Ohma Zi-O they knew in the future because she found almost no evidence to that conclusion. However, when Sougo gained Zi-O II, she sided with Kensuke as she suddenly realised that the reality of him becoming Ohma Zi-O was becoming more possible by the day. After saving a young Sougo (who unbeknownst to her at the time was the version native to this timeline and not the Sougo she knew), she came around to the idea that the future could be changed.
In the third part, Luna discovered her power to stop time and was horrified by it, but thanks to Zhuge Sōta’s help, she was able to accept who she was. Although Luna wasn’t interested in becoming a Kamen Rider initially, thinking of it more as a boys’ thing, she would come around to it after finally discovering her past and realising that her failure to prevent her father’s plans made her a burden to her friends. With the help of Sougo and Ohma Zi-O, Luna would become Kamen Rider Tsukuyomi and fight alongside her friends.
My face claim for Luna is Marny Kennedy, who is best known for playing Taylor Fry in Mortified. This really is the 30-year-old teenager situation from Power Rangers, isn’t it? As a tribute to the classic Australian children’s series, some more actors from the series (along with Parallax) have appeared in the Geiz and Woz episode of Before Quartzer as part of the Resistance in 2068.
Mark Roberts
Like his original counterpart Junichirō Tokiwa, Mark Roberts doesn’t have much of a role in the series besides running 9TO5 and being the guardian for Sougo, Geiz, Luna and later Kazuto and 2012 Akari (for a short time, anyway). In the year that Mark got to know Sougo, he noticed all the people coming and going from his repair shop and when Geiz and Luna temporarily left, he gained the courage to tell off Sougo for hiding his loneliness, encouraging him to be honest with his feelings so that he won’t become a king lacking in empathy.
Throughout the series, Mark does catch on to Sougo and his friends being Kamen Riders (particularly because they tend to openly discuss their matters within earshot of him), so when the reveal exposition dump happens in episode 30, he’s cool with it and he asks Sougo to continue using his powers to protect people. When Mark hears about Sougo becoming Ohma Zi-O, he is optimistic that the nice and kind Sougo he knew is still there as his friends promise him that they will do their best to bring him back to normal.
The entire thing with Junichirō being able to fix the Ridewatches in the finale comes out of nowhere and is never explained, so I decided not to write that in for Mark in the adaptation. Him fixing things other than clocks I understand, but it doesn’t work like that for Ridewatches.
My face claim for Mark is Andrew Blackman, who played Taylor’s dad, Don Fry, in Mortified (tbh he kind of looks older nowadays than the actor who played his original counterpart despite being younger than him). Fun fact, in Year 10, Andrew Blackman and his team from the Complete Works Theatre Company came to our school to perform some scenes from Shakespeare’s Macbeth and answer questions about it because it was a study topic in our English class. I volunteered to play Lord Ross (they got other students to play some smaller roles as well). Suffice to say I don’t have the same confidence for acting and public speaking than I had back then and- holy shit, that was 10 years ago? It’s been so long since the Day of Retribution (deep meaning).
Kazuto Hongō
Kazuto Hongō acts as the counterpart to Black Woz in the adaptation.
Kazuto was originally from an adult visual novel series called Koihime Musou, which is a feminised version of Dynasty Warriors, or more accurately, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. After being transported to the Koihime world based on late-Han Dynasty China, Kazuto returned to the modern world and brought his harem with him. Allying himself with the Chōsōkabe clan, they would come into conflict with Parker and his army, which he and his harem would join.
Kazuto’s harem wouldn’t be brought up in the series, but they would become lost following the Genesis Meltdown. He initially opposed Parker after his army split but then joined him again as part of the Date Army. In the normal timeline, Kazuto would continue to have adventures with Parker in The Kongming Adventures.
After the Date Army’s defeat at the hands of the Sanada Army in 2011, Kazuto was captured and would have been executed if not for Ohma Zi-O bringing him to 2068 to be his right-hand man. I think you know the rest of his backstory from here.
Kazuto is devoted to the mission that Ohma Zi-O gave him to ensure that the main Sougo would become the demonic overlord according to the history written in his book, the Twilight Chronicle. He would do anything to ensure this goal, going so far as to work with the Time Jackers to achieve this. As time went on however, Kazuto would come to accept Sougo becoming a different demonic overlord to what Ohma Zi-O was, which led him to be greatly surprised when Sougo actually became Ohma Zi-O towards the end of the series.
After Sougo destroyed the timeline and returned everything to normal, the parallel isotope Kazuto was given a new mission to look after the Sougo in the new timeline before Ohma Zi-O released him from his service.
Swartz, Ora and Heure (Time Jackers)
Swartz, Ora and Heure are the family from the supercomputer on Never Land, Swartz being the virtual Hiroki, Ora being Fifi Forget-me-not, and Heure being their son Takuhiro. Swartz wiped their memories and changed their appearances when he threw Luna into the Time Vortex and began his crusade against humanity.
When he created a new body for Hiroki after he destroyed his old one, the virtual Hiroki absorbed his negative emotions and memories while also gaining the ability to stop time. Seeing the truth of humanity in how other people treated people like Hiroki led him to go rogue (ironically triggered by the arrival of Sougo from the future), creating a convoluted plan to seek revenge against humanity by creating Ohma Zi-O, then having him liberate Hiroki in his past before working to make him Ohma Zi-O, from whom he would steal his powers at its peak to usurp him as the king of time.
Swartz carried out his plans with a ruthless demeanor, being willing to conduct experiments on even his own allies, as shown when he made Ora and Heure into Another Riders. Despite turning on his fellow Time Jackers to take back the time powers he had given them, he does start showing care for them by giving them the Gold Drive and Diend Anotherwatches and even instinctually defending his children from enemies. This would lead Sougo to convince Swartz that he did have a heart despite denying that he had one, something that would normally be the case for an AI avatar like him.
Ora appears to be more laidback however she is actually cunning and manipulative, creating Another Riders by having their users make contracts with her when they are on the verge of despair. Given that she was supposed to be based on Fifi Forget-me-not I would have cast an older actress instead of a teenager, but I don’t suppose it matters that much.
Heure, being the youngest of the Time Jackers, acts a bit childish as he hides a ruthlessness within himself, revelling at the suffering of others. His villainy does have his limits as when he suspects Swartz of colluding with Kensuke in secret, leading him to ally himself with Kazuto to steal Kamen Rider Woz’s powers and build an Another Rider Army for Hiryuu.
Kensuke Nitta
Kensuke Nitta acts as the counterpart to White Woz in the adaptation.
Kensuke is the protagonist of the Sengoku Koihime series, being a spin-off sequel to Koihime Musou in the vein of Samurai Warriors. He is the nephew to Kazuto and in the games, he is transported to another Koihime world based on the Sengoku period of Japan, where he gains a harem just as his uncle did before.
In this series, Kensuke comes back to the past from the year 2040. Unlike Kazuto whose allegiance is to Sougo and Ohma Zi-O, Kensuke’s allegiance is to Geiz as the saviour Geiz Revive. In contrast to Kazuto’s Twilight Chronicle, Kensuke possesses the Future Note, which he can use to will the future by writing or speaking into the tablet-like device.
Kensuke’s goal to push Geiz into becoming the saviour contains sinister aspects to it that he does not disclose to anyone. Unlike his uncle or even Swartz, Kensuke is amoral, sociopathic and manipulative, willing to stop at no end to push Geiz into becoming the saviour. He has a tendency to go into fits of rage when things don’t go his way, even going so far as to allow the world to be destroyed when he future he envisioned would no longer happen. Thanks to being encouraged by Sougo, however, he decides to establish Quartzer with the new goal of becoming the keeper of time.
Later on, Kensuke would directly work towards achieving his goal by force, working to ensure that Sougo becomes Ohma Zi-O on the true Ohma’s Day and making him fight Swartz as Another Decade Complete with the intent of having them destroy each other. When Geiz transforms into Geiz Majesty for the first time to fight Sougo as Ohma Zi-O, Kensuke’s initial goal was indirectly achieved.
In the megalomania caused by the thwarting of his ultimate plan, Kensuke reveals his true feelings about Kamen Riders, that they are no different from the powers of evil and that they were originally created to be weapons for destroying humanity. Of course, he is proven wrong by Sougo, the other Sougo and their fellow Kamen Riders.
Hiryuu Kakogawa
As I stated before, Hiryuu is modelled on a friend I used to know when I was little because our mums knew each other.
Hiryuu Kakogawa would have ended up as collateral damage from the accident in 2009 if it weren’t for the other Sougo saving him. He witnessed the other Sougo freezing people in time and rewriting their memories while he was stuck on a hospital bed without any powers, leading him to resent the other Sougo. Thanks to Swartz’s manipulation, he was led to believe that the accident was the main Sougo’s fault and sought to obtain the powers of former Another Riders as Another Zi-O, coming into conflict with Geiz over fighting Sougo before being defeated by the combined efforts of the two.
Sougo tried to convince Hiryuu to let go of the past and live for the present, but he was unable to do so, instead opting to take what he deserved from Sougo as he changed the timeline as Another Zi-O II. When Hiryuu failed and Swartz abandoned him, Kensuke recruited him into Quartzer and gave him a mission to obtain the Ancient Kamen Rider Ridewatches. At this point, Hiryuu learns of how the Heisei era became such a mess with all the rewrites and retcons, blaming Sougo for it because he just wanted someone to blame. He would work with Kensuke to achieve his goal of resetting the Heisei era and ruling over it as the keeper of time.
When Sougo became Ohma Zi-O, Hiryuu would gloat at Sougo’s proclamation of being the nicest and kindest overlord as his vile and evil actions were made public. After becoming Another Ohma Zi-O himself, Sougo has to tell Hiryuu again to let go of the past and live in the present as he and the other Sougo defeat him.
Akihito Hayasaka
Akihito Hayasaka acts as the counterpart to Red Woz, who was created from Black Woz in the final stage show.
Akihito is the protagonist of Harukoi Otome, the predecessor to the Koihime series. It’s set in the same school where the other two protagonists went, with some references to Harukoi Otome being made in Koihime Musou.
Initially, Akihito acted as Tsukuyomi’s Woz servants so that he could give her the power of Tsukuyomi ABC, then he lent his assistance to the Time Jackers. This was done on the orders of Kensuke, his true boss. After revealing his true allegiance to Quartzer, Akihito works with Kensuke to fight the Riders as they merge to become Another Ichigou, later merging further with Hiryuu and the Quartzer trio to become Another New Ichigou.
I’m not good at writing character development so the characters in the adaptation are essentially carbon-copied from the original, with some influence from Zero-One during the final part of the story. Regardless, I hope I’ve been able to do better in adaptation than the original.

Powersports Jackets in 2024: Innovative Safety or Just High-Tech Gimmicks?
Introduction
As an experienced powersport bike rider, I’ve seen the evolution of riding gear firsthand. The year 2024 has brought us to a crossroads where technology and safety intersect in the world of powersports jackets. But this begs the question: Are these advancements genuinely enhancing rider safety, or are they merely high-tech gimmicks? In this blog, we’ll explore the latest trends in powersports jackets, dissecting their features to determine if they live up to the hype.
The Rise of High-Tech Powersports Jackets
Technological Integration:
Overview: The latest powersports jackets come equipped with a range of high-tech features, from GPS-enabled pockets to built-in action cameras and even IoT connectivity.
Purpose: These features aim to enhance rider safety, comfort, and the overall riding experience. But how effective are they in practice?
Safety Features: More than Meets the Eye
Advanced Protection:
Material Innovations: 2024’s jackets have seen a surge in the use of materials like D3O armor and Kevlar reinforcements. These materials offer superior protection without compromising on comfort.
Smart Safety: Features like LED lighting for visibility and integrated SOS beacons are designed for emergency situations. But is the integration seamless, or does it add unnecessary complexity?
The Controversy: Safety vs. Gadgetry
A Critical Look:
Essential vs. Extravagant: While some riders applaud these advancements, others argue that the essence of powersports jackets – protection – is getting overshadowed by gadgetry.
Functionality Debate: We will critically assess whether these added features genuinely enhance safety or serve as mere tech novelties.
User Experience: Comfort and Practicality
Rider-Centric Design:
Ergonomics: With the addition of technology, 2024’s jackets have also focused on ergonomic designs. Ventilation systems and adjustable fittings are meant to enhance comfort.
Real-World Use: How do these jackets fare in everyday riding scenarios? Are they as practical on a long ride as they are on the showroom floor?
Cost vs. Value: Is the Investment Justified?
Analyzing Affordability:
Pricing Trends: The influx of technology has inevitably led to a price hike in powersports jackets. We will analyze whether the increased costs are justified by the benefits.
Longevity and Durability: Additionally, the durability of these high-tech jackets under regular use and maintenance will be examined.
The Future of Powersports Jackets
Predicting Trends:
Sustainability: As we move forward, the integration of sustainable materials and practices is becoming increasingly important.
Tech Evolution: Future trends may include more sophisticated safety features like impact-detecting sensors or AI integration.
The Verdict: Innovative Safety or Gimmicks?
Concluding Thoughts:
Balanced Perspective: We will conclude with a balanced viewpoint, considering the arguments from both sides of the debate.
Personal Insights: Drawing from my experience, I’ll provide insights on what makes a powersports jacket truly valuable for riders.
Conclusion
The world of powersports jackets in 2024 is undoubtedly exciting, filled with innovations that seemed like distant dreams just a few years ago. However, the core of this evolution should remain rooted in enhancing rider safety and comfort. As we embrace these advancements, it's crucial to critically assess their practicality and impact on the riding experience.

Ramble of the month August 2023: 90’s MCU Phase 3 (2000-2003)
Back in May I posted my ideas for phase 2 of my hypothetical 90’s-based Marvel Cinematic Universe, having outlined phase 1 last year.  Following some recent frustrations with some superhero fan groups I recently joined on Facebook, I’ve decided to go back to this alternate film universe just as a way of talking about my superhero special interest without jumping through a bunch of idiot rules monitored by some truly moronic bots.  When AI can’t grasp concepts that are simple to an autistic mind like mine, you have to wonder why we’re trying to advance it when it’s clearly going to just adopt human stupidity over human intelligence anyway.
So, first let’s recap the key differences between the 90’s MCU and the one we know.  First, Marvel sold film rights to its characters in 1995 to avoid bankruptcy, and many of these were used by other film studios.  As a result, a 90’s MCU would have a wider range of characters to use if it started pre-1995 (mine starts in 1992).  In addition, there are differences between the source material created by the 1990’s and the source material used by the real MCU.  The Ultimates continuity didn’t exist until at least the year 2000, so there was no source material to justify a Black man playing Nick Fury.  Also, no Winter Soldier, no present-day Guardians of the Galaxy, no Civil War and so on.  My hypothetical MCU takes all this into account where the 90’s MCU memes of the internet do not.
Second, let’s recap the first and second phases of my 90’s MCU that were covered in the previous rambles;
Phase 1:
1992: Fantastic Four, Hulk, Iron Man
1993: Thor, Spider-Man, Ant-Man & The Wasp
1994: Captain America: Fantastic Four 2, Iron Man 2
1995: X-Men, Avengers, Daredevil
Phase 2:
1996: Spider-Man 2, Thor: Land of Enchantment, Silver Surfer
1997: Hulk vs Wolverine, Fantastic Four: Doomsday, Iron Man 3
1998: Captain America: Society of Serpents, Daredevil 2, X-Men 2
1999: Avenger 2, Spider-Man 3, Doctor Strange
The first phase is about introducing the initial characters and setting up for the creation of the Avengers late in the phase.  Phase 2 is more about expansion, continuing to develop the existing characters while adding some new ones and starting off the general MCU rule of loss experienced in a third film; the F4 lost their original headquarters and Ben a chance at living a normal, human life, Tony Stark has lost his sobriety and the Iron Man mantle and Spider-Man has lost Gwen Stacy.  Phase 3 will follow all of this up with more losses for others, plus more development of existing characters and addition of new ones.  Unlike the real MCU, however, these early phases are not about building up for Infinity War, but rather for an adaptation of the original Secret Wars story of the 1980’s.  So, here’s a quick overview of my 90’s MCU phase 3 slate;
Phase 3:
2000: Fantastic Four: World War III, Thor: Ragnarök, Daredevil 3
2001: Hulk: Rise of the Leader, X-Men: Fall of the Mutants, Avengers: Under Siege
2002: Doctor Strange 2, The Captain, Spider-Man 4
2003: Captain Britain, Fantastic Four: Enter the Negative Zone, Ghost Rider
As you can see, phase 3 is similarly sequel-heavy to phase 2, but includes two new heroes, of which one (Ghost Rider) is set to have multiple solo films while the other is kind of a one-off ahead of involvement in an ensemble film in phase 4.  Now let’s look at each of the phase 3 films in turn;
Fantastic Four: World War III (2000) Directed by Steven Spielberg
Reed Richards/Mr Fantastic = Tom Hanks
Susan Storm (Richards)/Invisible Woman = Meg Ryan
Johnny Storm/Human Torch = David Spade
Ben Grimm/Thing = Bryan Cranston
Alicia Masters = Heather Graham
Namor McKenzie/The Submariner = Christian Bale
General Krang = Tim Curry
Lady Dorma = Katie Holmes
T'Challa/Black Panther = Chadwick Boseman
Shuri = Tatyana Ali
Ramonda = Alfre Woodard
T'Chaka = Courtney B. Vance
W'Kabi = Chiwetel Ejiofor
Okoye = Nia Long
Zuri = Joseph Marcell
Black Bolt = Pierce Brosnan
Medusa = Elizabeth Hurley
Crystal = Dina Meyer
Gorgon = J.G. Hertzler
Karnak = Alexander Siddig
Triton = Orlando Bloom
Maximus = Willem Dafoe
Falcona = Amy Yasbeck
Leonus = Karl Urban
Timberius = Adam Baldwin
This fourth film in the Fantastic Four franchise is an attempt to honour the fact that the F4 reintroduced Namor the Sub-Mariner and introduced Black Panther and the Inhumans all through their comic.  The basic plot is that Atlantis is attacked by what appears to be Wakanda, resulting in Namor staging a retaliatory assault on the Wakandan embassy in New York.  T’Challa is visiting said embassy, having recently assumed the Wakandan throne, and a massive battle ensues, with the F4 being first on the scene.  What initially follows is the F4 trying to end and then investigate the conflict.  Eventually, the team finds some of the attackers are part of the hidden race known as the Inhumans, and go to find their hidden city, with T’Challa and Namor now acting as their allies.
It turns out the Inhumans are being manipulated by the villainous Maximus, and events go fairly close to comics from there, ending with the seemingly permanent separation of Johnny Storm and his Inhuman love interest Crystal.  While the F4 and Alicia Masters are castings retained from previous three films, all the other characters are new to this film.  I’ve also retained Spielberg as director from film 3, as I feel his work on both Jurassic Park and Saving Private Ryan lends itself to the idea of a film about the F4 trying to stop a third world war from breaking out.
Thor: Ragnarök (2000) Directed by Kenneth Branagh
Thor = Dolph Lundgren
Loki = Gary Oldman
Odin = Anthony Hopkins
Frega = Glenn Close
Fandrall = Cary Elwes
Hogun = Tony Leung
Volstagg = Thomas Haden Church
Sif = Demi Moore
Heimdall = Keith David
Balder = Sean Bean
Jane Foster = Courtney Cox
Amora the Enchantress = Charlize Theron
Skurge the Executioner = Jean Claude Van Dame
Hercules = Arnold Schwarzenegger
Surtur = Clancy Brown
Hela = Cate Blanchett
Karnilla = Angelina Jolie
This is our third Asgardian visit, and unlike the main MCU, I’ve kept Ken Branagh directing the Thor films in this hypothetical run to avoid the tonal inconsistencies that have plagued the Thor films of the real MCU.  I’ve also decided that while this MCU will have the same title on its third Thor film, we’re not going anywhere near the pseudo-Planet Hulk plot.  Instead, the film begins with Loki, Amora and Skurge attacking Earth with the aid of some Asgardian trolls.  Thor and Hercules are aided by a visiting Balder and Sif, and Balder is badly wounded.  Thor enlists the aid of Balder’s admirer Karnilla to heal him, but her spell inadvertently triggers the release of Surtur, threatening the coming of Ragnarök.
Thor then leads an expedition to the realm of Hela, who in this MCU retains her position from the comics and original Norse lore as Loki’s daughter, not his and Thor’s sister.  In Hela’s domain lies the means to defeat Surtur, but Hela demands a soul, and ultimately Thor has to agree to remain in place of the artefact.  This puts an end to Thor solo films for a while, and also creates an interesting spin on the third-film-losses rule of the MCU.  In this case, Thor loses his “life” and his freedom in order to save his homeland, and also loses his romance with Jane Foster.
Daredevil 3 (2000) Directed by Quentin Tarantino
Matt Murdock/Daredevil = Christian Slater
Foggy Nelson = Jon Favreau
Karen Page = Denise Richards
Wilson Fisk/Kingpin = Bruce Willis
Bullseye = Colin Farrel
Elektra Natchios = Leonor Varela
Mary Walker/Typhoid Mary = Drew Barrymore
J. Jonah Jameson = J.K. Simmons
Joseph “Robbie” Robertson = Denzel Washington
Ben Urich = John Spencer
Turk Barrett = Gary Dourdan
Lt Nicholas Manoli = Paul Ben-Victor
Glorianna O'Breen = Tiffani Amber Thiessen
DA Blake Tower = Bradley Whitford
Yes, folks, this third (and final) Daredevil solo film would have Quentin Tarantino in the director’s chair.  This is because I’d be curious to see how Tarantino might do on a film like this.  In this case, it’s an amalgamation of the ‘Death of Elektra’ and ‘Born Again’ story arcs.  In effect, Karen Page has become a drug addict and trades Daredevil’s real identity, resulting in the Kingpin dismantling Matt Murdock’s life.  However, in this version, the release of that information also results in the death of Elektra, and that of Karen Page as well.  This leads to a major clash between Daredevil and his key adversaries, after which his life will never be the same again.  This is another example of third-film loses being enacted.  Many of the roles are reprised from the previous Daredevil films or incorporated from the Spider-Man films, with only the last three roles being new to this film.
Hulk: Rise of the Leader (2001) Directed by Sam Raimi
Bruce Banner/Hulk = John Cusack
Betty Ross = Jennifer Connelly
General Ross = Sam Elliott
Major Talbot = Steve Guttenberg
Rick Jones = Tobey Maguire
Emil Blonsky/Abomination = Sam Neill
Dr Leonard Samson/Doc Samson = David Duchovny
Sam Sterns/The Leader = John Shea
Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk = Lucy Lawless
Carl "Crusher" Creel/Absorbing Man = Michael Chiklis
Diana Davids/Ogress = Terry Farrell
Louis Lembert/Hotshot = Chris Evans
Jessica Harrison/Jailbait = Katrina Law
Here we have our third solo Hulk film, and this time his allies aren’t going to be from the world of the X-Men as in phase 2’s Hulk vs Wolverine.  Instead, this film brings the Hulk’s long-time foe the Leader into the fray, at the head of a group of gamma-powered villains.  Aiding the Hulk this time, we have his cousin Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk and gamma-powered psychiatrist Leonard “Doc” Samson.  In this film, Samson has helped Banner to develop some control over the Hulk, but thanks to the Leader’s actions, that is lost, along with the life of Betty Ross.
Having had Tim Burton direct the first two Hulk films in this MCU, direction is handed over to Sam Raimi on this instalment.  Now it occurs to me I haven’t specified how the Hulk would be realised in a pre-mo-cap era of the MCU.  Well, that’s down to a combination of animatronics/puppets akin to the early Jurassic Park films, combined with a bit of CGI and some careful editing.  That way, you can have an actor like John Cusack play Banner without needing a painted body-double, and that’s assuming Hulk films wouldn’t drive a development of mo-cap technology.
For the Leader, I picked John Shea based on his performance as Adam in the Mutant X TV series, as well as knowing that he played Lex Luthor in Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.  Other new actors include Michael Chiklis (the Thing in the 2005-2007 Fox F4 films), Terry Farrell of Trek Fame, Katrina Law of Arrowverse and NCIS fame, and of course Chris Evans, the real MCU’s Captain America.  Lucy Lawless, in turn, takes on the role of She-Hulk while David “Mulder” Duchovny gets to play Doc Samson (assuming he's willing to build some muscle for this role).
X-Men: Fall of the Mutants (2001) Directed by Jonathan Frakes
Professor Charles Xavier = Patrick Stewart
Cyclops/Scott Summers = Patrick Swayze
Jean Grey = Milla Jovovich
Warren Worthington III/Angel = Neil Patrick Harris
Storm/Ororo Monroe = Halle Berry
Beast/Hank McCoy = Alec Baldwin
Banshee/Sean Cassidy = Liam Neeson
Polaris/Lorna Dane = Jeri Ryan
Havok/Alex Summers = Kevin Bacon
Robert Drake/Iceman = Michael Weatherley
Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler = Daniel Brühl
Wolverine/Logan = Tom Cruise
Mariko Yashida = Shu Qi
Kitty Pryde = Selma Blair
Sam Guthrie = Paul Walker
Roberto Da Costa = Mario Lopez
Tabita Smith = Anna Faris
Senator Robert Kelly = Robert Hays
Henry Peter Gyrich = David Caruso
Senator Graydon Creed = Joshua Lucas
Cameron Hodge = Bruce Davison
Calisto = Carrie-Anne Moss
Sunder = Kevin Nash
Ape = Gotz Otto
Annalee = Rosemary Harris
Plague = Gates McFadden
Caliban = Joe Pantoliano
Healer = Brian Cox
Sally Blevins/Skids = Amy Smart
Magneto = Ian McKellan
Fabian Cortez = Jason Flemyng
Chrome = Victor Webster
Sabretooth = Tyler Mane
Pyro = Hugh Jackman
Title aside, X-Fans shouldn’t expect any kind of like-for-like adaptation of the X-titles crossover event of the same name.  Instead, this film is about the X-Men being split apart and not getting back together for a while.  After an opening clash with Magneto and his new followers, the Acolytes, the X-Men return home, only for the mansion to be attacked by an anti-mutant terror group lead by Cameron Hodge and secretly backed by Senator Graydon Creed.  In the confusion, the “original” X-Men pursue those members of the terror group that abduct Professor X and a few students, Nightcrawler and Banshee escape to Muir Island with Kitty Pryde and most of the other students, while Storm and Wolverine lead the remainder down to the Morlock tunnels.
The Muir Island evacuees aren’t much covered during the rest of the film, with the focus being on the attempt to free Xavier and a further battle in the tunnels that decimates the Morlocks, something Magneto then turns to his advantage by recruiting Morlock survivors to his Acolytes.  We also finally get Pyro done correctly as an Australian mutant, and hints are dropped regarding the use of the proper Horsemen of Apocalypse in phase 4.  Director-wise, I retain Jonathan Frakes from my version of X-Men 2 since I think Trek alumni would have a great sensitivity to the messages and themes inherent in X-Men lore.
Avengers: Under Siege (2001) Directed by Roland Emmerich
Steve Rogers/Captain America = Brad Pitt
Thor = Dolph Lundgren
Janet Van Dyne/Wasp = Catherine Zeta Jones
Hercules = Arnold Schwarzenegger
Clint Barton/Hawkeye = Kevin Costner
Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow = Famke Jansen
Vision = Casper Van Dien
Sam Wilson/Falcon = Will Smith
T'Challa/Black Panther = Chadwick Boseman
Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff = Kate Beckinsale
Quicksilver/Pietro Maximoff = Robert Sean Leonard
Edwin Jarvis = Mark Rylance
Col. John Jameson = Daniel Gillies
Michael O'Brien = Tony Curran
Bill Foster = Laurence Fishburne
Fabian Stankowicz = Tom Sizemore
Heinrich Zemo = Til Schweiger
Helmut Zemo = Sylvester Groth
Dr Karla Sofen/Moonstone = Peta Wilson
David Canon/Whirlwind = Colin Cunningham
Mark Scarlotti/Whiplash = Jason Lee
Donald Gill/Blizzard = Robert Duncan McNeil
Constrictor/Frank Schlicting = Stephen Dorff
For this film, I’m trying to see the Avengers story arc of the same name adapted to the big screen.  The basic plot is that Baron Heinrich Zemo, son of the original Barom Helmut Zemo, assembles a group of anti-Avengers villains known as the ‘Masters of Evil’ and lays siege to Avengers Mansion.  It then falls to a mix of escaped current Avengers and some past/reserve Avengers to save everyone else.  In a sense, it’s kind of the Avengers equivalent to something like White House Down, hence my selecting of that film’s director for this one.  The film is a mix of existing casting and new stuff, and I’m not going to go into a lot of detail on who falls into which category.
Instead, I’m just going to quickly answer the question I’m sure many of you will be asking; how can Thor be in this if he’s been trapped in Hela’s domain after his last solo film?  Simple, she sends him to aid the Masters of Evil, but a hex bolt from the Scarlet Witch frees him for the big fight at the end.
Doctor Strange 2 (2002) Directed by Tim Burton
Dr Stephen Strange = Johnny Depp
Wong = Will Yun Lee
Clea = Keira Knightley
Dr Nicodemus West = Alan Rickman
Dr Christine Palmer = Helena Bonham Carter
Nightmare = Jonathan Pryce
Our second Doctor Strange film is quite a stream-lined one compared to the first, as it involves Strange teaching his apprentice/love interest Clea for a bit and then having to wade into mystic conflict with the dream-demon known as Nightmare.  This film is very much about developing the Strange-Clea relationship while also serving up a bit of mystic superhero horror, hence Tim Burton remaining my choice to helm the film.  Except for Nightmare, all casting is carried over from our first Dr Strange film in this 90’s-based MCU.
The Captain (2002) Directed by Tony Scott
Steve Rogers/Captain America/The Captain = Brad Pitt
Sam Wilson/Falcon = Will Smith
Barbara "Bobbi" Morse/Mockingbird = Rebecca Romijn-Stamos
Diamondback/Rachel Leighton = Neve Campbell
Clint Barton/Hawkeye = Kevin Costner
Jack Munroe/Nomad = Alessandro Nivola
John Walker/Captain America II = Aaron Eckhart
Lemar Hoskins/Battlestar = Michael Jai White
Johann Schmidt/Red Skull = Hugo Weaving
Brock Rumlow/Crossbones = Ron Perlman
Mother Midnight = Sela Ward
Dr Faustus = Brendan Gleeson
Henry Peter Gyrich = David Caruso
There are at least two notable occasions where Steve Rogers has given up his Captain America persona over multiple comic issues.  The first, in the 1970’s, led to him temporarily assuming the Nomad identity.  The second, in the 1980’s, led to the US government appointing a new Captain America while Rogers kept on fighting as the Captain.  This film is an adaptation of the latter arc; in this case, Rogers begins a romantic relationship with reforming snake-themed criminal Diamondback, which prompts NSA operative to investigate Rogers.  Trumped up charges based on circumstantial evidence then enables Gyrich to force Cap out of the uniform in favour of a new candidate.
At the same time, a neo-Nazi terror group is acting within the United States, and when the new Captain America refuses to look into it, Steve has to go back into action, aided by those closest to him, and this puts him at odds with his successor.  All this then leads to a clash with Cap’s resurrected arch-foe, the Red Skull.  Director-wise, I mainly know Tony Scott’s work from Beverly Hills Cop II and Unstoppable, but I know he also did Enemy of the State and one or two similar films at least, which would make him a good choice to do this particular Cap story.
Spider-Man 4 (2002) Directed by Martin Campbell
Peter Parker/Spider-Man = Wil Weaton
May Parker = Marg Helgenberger
Flash Thompson = Ben Affleck
J. Jonah Jameson = J.K. Simmons
Joseph "Robbie" Robertson = Denzel Washington
Betty Brant = Parker Posey
Ned Leeds = John Barrowman
Randy Robertson = Taye Diggs
Harry Osborn = Ryan Phillipe
Mary-Jane Watson = Alison Hannigan
Dr Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus = Alfred Molina
Herman Schultz/Shocker = Patrick Muldoon
Aleksei Sytsevich/Rhino = Jake Busey
Mac Gargan/Scorpion = Brian Bloom
Sergei Kravenoff/Kraven the Hunter = Gerard Butler
Adrian Tombs/Vulture = Richard Dreyfuss
Ben Urich = John Spencer
Captain Jean DeWolff = Jessica Biel
Detective Stanley Carter = James Marsden
So far, we’ve had two Spider-Man films from John Hughes and a third from Frank Darabont in this alternate MCU.  For the fourth instalment, Martin Campbell of Goldeneye and Mask of Zorro fame is my choice to take the helm.  In this instance, we’re going into our first Spider-Man film post-Gwen Stacy, and in this one, new adversary Doctor Octopus assembles a group of old enemies from the previous films, creating the ever-classic Spider-Man vs. The Sinister Six match-up.  The film also brings in Jean DeWolff and Stanley Carter to set up for elements of the Venom story-arc to be adapted, and that being on the horizon hints in turn at the impending Secret Wars film adaptation.  In addition, I’ve brough Ben Urich over into the Spider-Man films to maintain the sense of shared continuity in terms of Daily Bugle reporters being in the lives of more than one hero of the MCU.
Captain Britain (2003) Directed by Christopher Nolan
Brian Braddock Jr./Captain Britain = Jamie Bamber
Betsy Braddock/Psylocke = Lena Headey
Mordred = Angus MacFadyen
Morgan Le Fey = Catherine McCormack
Dane Whitman/Black Knight = Ioan Gruffudd
Meggan = Sienna Miller
Courtney Ross = Rosamund Pike
DI Dai Thomas = Mark Lewis Jones
Detective Kate Fraser = Kate Winslet
Brian Braddock Sr. = Jeremy Irons
Elizabeth Braddock = Imelda Staunton
Jamie Braddock = Ewan McGregor
Merlin = Terence Stamp
Roma = Rachel Weisz
Much in the same way that Wonder Woman had a female-led production crew and Black Panther was similarly led by Black film makers, I honestly believe you could only ever get a great Captain Britain film if you put some great British talent into things.  As such, I had to go for a British director of great quality, and Christopher Nolan is certainly one of those.  Plot-wise, it’s very much about creating a more consistent version of what Captain Britain was over the years in first Marvel UK comics and then in the Excalibur off-shoot of the X-Men.  Brian Braddock is supposed to be the Champion of Britain, chosen and tried by Merlin, and while originally created with a lot of US superhero sensibilities by Chris Claremont, much of what he later became was due to a massive ret-con by Alan Moore.  However, the Merlin element and the hero being of Britain means a good origin film would probably feed some Arthurian legend in, and this is something also relevant to Avengers member the Black Knight.
As such, the plot of this film would establish the Black Knight as a modern-day hero who needs help against the returning evil of King Arthur’s illegitimate son Modred and his mother, Morgan Le Fey.  To that end, Merlin and his daughter Roma seek out Brian Braddock and cast him into the role of Captain Britain.  He and the Black Knight, further aided by Brian’s mutant twin sister Psylocke and the mutant shape-shifter Meggan, battle Mordred and Moran, as well as errant elder sibling Jamie Braddock.  Also included is Detective Inspector Dai Thomas, a Welsh-born Scotland Yard policeman who hates superheroes ever since his wife was killed when the pair visited the US.
In terms of casting, I’ve tried to honour the idea of Brian and Betsy being twins by aiming for actors that look similar and are of similar age, as I don’t think anyone makes any effort in this respect of fan-casting.  With Jamie Bamber being my choice for Brian, I then had little hesitation casting his old Hornblower co-star Ioan Gruffudd as Dane Whitman.  Everyone else has then been about just trying to get the best British actors that I think match the roles at hand.  Frankly, I hope that someone at Marvel sees this some day before they start on a Captain Britain project and take heed, because somehow, I suspect they might not and would mess things up somewhat, especially if they try to put Psylocke into their X-Men films with no ties to her twin.  Bad enough having that in the Fox X-Verse films due to film rights issues without the MCU repeating that error.
Fantastic Four: Enter The Negative Zone (2003) Directed by Ridley Scott
Reed Richards/Mr Fantastic = Tom Hanks
Susan Storm (Richards)/Invisible Woman = Meg Ryan
Johnny Storm/Human Torch = David Spade
Ben Grimm/Thing = Bryan Cranston
Alicia Masters = Heather Graham
Black Bolt = Pierce Brosnan
Medusa = Elizabeth Hurley
Crystal = Dina Meyer
Gorgon = J.G. Hertzler
Karnak = Alexander Siddig
Triton = Orlando Bloom
Maximus = Willem Dafoe
Annihilus = Eric Bana
Blastaar = Colm Feore
This is now our fifth Fantastic Four film, and it’s an adaptation of the first Sue Richards pregnancy storyline from the comics.  Sue is pregnant, but the cosmic radiation that has given her powers may interfere with the birth.  To ensure it won’t, Reed determines to find a remedy, and discovers one can be found in the parallel universe known as the Negative Zone.  At the same time, the Inhumans manage to free themselves from the confinement imposed on them by Maximus, and Crystal substitutes for Sue on the quest into the Negative Zone.  This quest, however, brings the team into the middle of an on-going war between the empires of Annihilus and Blastaar, and it becomes a battle of long odds to find their prize and escape before it’s too late to help Sue and the baby.
In light of the alien setting, I figured that Aliens director Ridley Scott would be a good choice to take over the direction, and we add Eric Bana and Colm Feore to the array of actors already cast in past films.
Ghost Rider (2003) Directed by Tim Burton
Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider = Connor Trinneer
Roxanne Simpson = Jessica Alba
Craig "Crash" Simpson = Jeff Bridges
Mona Simpson = Julianne Moore
Barton Blaze = Nick Nolte
Blackheart = Wes Bentley
Mephistopheles = Jeffery Combs
Much as I enjoyed the 2007 film version of Ghost Rider, I always felt it had its flaws, including a lead actor with the wrong hair colour and an over-simplified origin story.  This film, which is helmed by Tim Burton for relatively obvious reasons, seeks to fix those errors.  First, we have Connor Trinneer of Star Trek: Enterprise fame taking on the lead role.  Second, the film sticks to the idea of Johnny becoming the Ghost Rider because he wanted to honour a deathbed promise to his foster mother, hence why the family of Roxanne Simpson plays into the cast.  After the origin part plays out, the film then goes into the matter of Johnny having to tackle Blackheart for Mephistopheles, with Roxanne being as much ally as love interest in this version.
The only casting retained from the 2007 Ghost Rider film is Wes Bently playing Blackheart; everyone else is newly cast.  As for why I didn’t retain Eva Mendes as Roxanne, the source material had her as white, and I prefer to either create new characters or use existing ones for purposes of adding diversity.  Since Roxanne Simpson doesn’t fit either method, I’ve cast Jessica Alba in that role, and I’ll hopefully have more diversity to showcase in later phases of this alternate MCU. So, that’s everything outlined for phase 3 of our 90’s MCU for now.  Next month, I plan to outline phase 3 of my alternate DC film universe, and then with some luck I might be able to do something more topical/general interest after that.  Anyway, until the next ramble, ta-ta-for now.

Things we know: Leander
this is mainly a post to summarize (and draw conclusions from) the info we get on leander from the demo (bc he is the one i can make least sense of and i need to change that :’D)
read more for length. tl;dr: we may have to pay more attention to the fogfall and how it relates to leander
let’s get started with a quick overview of the scenes he appears in: - we first get a glimpse at him from the posters advertising him and his services with his silhouette, the name of his group (”bloodhounds”), and the phrase “as above, so below” printed on it
curiously, this phrase is, among other occult connections, associated with the rider-waite depiction of the magician card in tarot that is often interpreted as a conduit between the spiritual and the mundane/the world at large and man himself. given that leander is explicitly referred to as a mage, this feels very much intentional
- we find leander in “the wet wick”, a bar in the entertainment district, filled with people in green cloaks (the bloodhounds) and leander on a table, putting on a magic show for them (not sure if it’s relevant but leander is wearing gilded boots). he conjures up lilies (the magic is described as pale green, so i assume the lilies are the same) and offers them to mc
in this instance, and in general, leander is heavily associated with the color green
an alchemist mc will note that leander doesn’t use incantations or spell circles, implying he wields immense power
- leander then takes mc to the bar counter, deduces it’s their first time in eridia and offers them a drink. mc asks him for help to get to the senobium, the bloodhounds don’t react well to it, and leander takes mc outside, warning them against the senobium and asking to see their curse (after warding against it). mc is hesitant but ends up touching him
if you choose to touch him, leander grins and reassures mc that he is fine. if you hesitate, he grabs your hand, his expression goes blank, and he goes so far as to reach for your throat before catching himself (unclear whether this is just mc’s perception or whether his control really slips there)
an alchemist mc will recognize the ward as an enchantment for protection
- leander confirms that mc’s curse is one of a kind and offers them a room at the bar (that the barkeeper apparently keeps for him and his “escapades”). later, while mc is accompanying kuras and mhin to the bar, we see him pour shots for ais and vere. the group shares a drink (ais noting that leander “has tried to kill [him] a dozen times by now”). kuras and mhin head off to discuss their business with leander
- in his epilogue, aside from telling mc his opinion on the other characters, leander offers mc to let them touch him again (red choice lets you touch his face) and stresses that if they need “a taste of normalcy”, he’ll be there
notable: leander is the only character who doesn’t seem to actively dislike anybody (although the “rivalry” with ais doesn’t feel convincing to me)
all in all, the demo tries very hard to give him an aura of normalcy, which, of course, makes him pretty suspicious. the other characters’ reactions to him are also fairly telling, in my opinion
kuras expresses confidence in him, although he finds the company he keeps questionable. when mc calls the bloodhounds “rough around the edges”, he says leander prefers the company of those like him, implying leander is the same, and that his people trust him with their lives
ais talks about his charm and how it has gotten leander far. he also says leander has done a good job (for a human) but that his resolve will be tested in the future
mhin blushes at the mention of leander and calls him an idiot (in typical tsundere fashion) who can’t shut up to save his life. they compliment his work as well (with a tone that is “almost fond”)
vere is the most colorful with his expressions, calling leander a “pathetic, slimy, little man child in big shiny shoes”
what strikes me as somewhat curious is that leander is the only character to not voice a direct personal opinion on the senobium, although he does disapprove of the way they treat vere. additionally, his worst relationship is with vere, who is a prisoner of the senobium and subsequently hates ist, while his best relationships are with people who either seek entry to the senobium (mhin) or openly have business with it (kuras; though how close that connection is remains to be seen, given that he does mess with a senobium cleric lmao) (leander does have a good relationship with ais on the surface but something is straining it, especially since his relationship chart describes his “murder attempts” as being “funny...until they’re not”). at this moment i’m not entirely convinced he has a direct connection to the senobium but i certainly think it’s a possibility.
a much stronger connection, in my opinion, is fogfall. the prologue describes it as “spectral mist [that] bled from the seams where reality wore so thin it split.” ais also offhandedly mentions planes in his dialogue about leander’s resolve (direct quote being “Naturally, there’ll come a time when his resolve is tested. Same could be said for anyone, in this plane or the next.”). while this turn of phrase seems to reference an existence after death, it has to be considered that monsters (such as vere and ais) did emerge from the fog and thus from those seams in reality. whether or not the fabric of reality seperated distinct planes of existence remains to be seen but given the information we have, it’s likely. now, how does that relate to leander? for that we have to consider the phrase on his poster and its common usage. as mentioned previously, “as above so below” is a phrase strongly associated with bridging the gap between either the world and man, or, which is quite interesting in this case, the gap between different planes of existence (also known as the theory of correspondence in theology). and that second association fits very well into the worldbuilding established by the game. my guess? he’s either some sort of “barrier maiden” or has some sort of connection to either the fogfall itself or the plane that lies beyond it.
where does that leave us? while you could theorize that leander is a monster as well since they came from the fog, i don’t think that’s very likely. leander is the only character to not have a monstrous shadow on his character card; his is the only one to simply have a human form. the other possibilities are, then, that it’s either his personality that is the monstrous part of him or it’s his magic - it’s green, just as his eyes (which is drawn attention to multiple times), and his character’s shadow’s defining feature is his glowing eyes. i suspect it will be the latter but i’m open to be suprised :’D
in conclusion,

Overview
About
Deathloop is a next-gen first person shooter from Arkane Lyon, the award-winning studio behind Dishonored. In Deathloop, two rival assassins are trapped in a mysterious timeloop on the island of Blackreef, doomed to repeat the same day for eternity. As Colt, the only chance for escape is to end the cycle by assassinating eight key targets before the day resets. Learn from each cycle – try new paths, gather intel, and find new weapons and abilities. Do whatever it takes to break the loop.
Key Features
Designed for PlayStation 5 – Deathloop is built for a new generation, leveraging the PlayStation 5’s hardware and graphics to bring Arkane’s unique artistic vision to life like never before. Deathloop takes advantage of new cutting-edge features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers to make each encounter feel unique and impactful.
If at First You Don’t Succeed… Die, Die Again – Every new loop is an opportunity to change things up. Use the knowledge you gain from each attempt to change up your playstyle, stealthily sneaking through levels or barreling into the fight, guns-blazing. In each loop you’ll discover new secrets, gather intel on your targets as well as the island of Blackreef, and expand your arsenal. Armed with a host of otherworldly abilities and savage weaponry, you’ll utilize every tool at your command to execute takedowns that are as striking as they are devastating. Customize your loadout wisely to survive this deadly game of hunter vs hunted.
Single Player Gameplay Injected with Deadly Multiplayer – Are you the hero or the villain? You’ll experience Deathloop‘s main story as Colt, hunting down targets across the island of Blackreef to break the loop and earn your freedom. All the while, you’ll be hunted by your rival Julianna, who can be controlled by another player. So if you’re feeling devious, you, too, can step into Julianna’s stylish sneakers and invade another player’s campaign to kill Colt. The multiplayer experience is completely optional, and players can choose to have Julianna controlled by AI within their campaign.
The Island of Blackreef—Paradise or Prison – Arkane is renowned for magnificently artistic worlds with multiple pathways and emergent gameplay. Deathloop will present a stunning, retro-future, 60s-inspired environment, that feels like a character within itself. While Blackreef may be a stylish wonderland, for Colt it is his prison, a world ruled by decadence where death has no meaning, and delinquents party forever while keeping him captive.
