OpenAI launches Sora: AI video generator now public
Tumblr media
OpenAI has made its artificial intelligence video generator, Sora, available to the general public in the US, following an initial limited release to certain artists, filmmakers, and safety testers.
Introduced in February, the tool faced overwhelming demand on its launch day, temporarily halting new sign-ups due to high website traffic.
youtube
Changing video creation with text-to-video creation
The text-to-video generator enables the creation of video clips from written prompts. OpenAI’s website showcases an example: a serene depiction of woolly mammoths traversing a desert landscape.
In a recent blog post, OpenAI expressed its aspiration for Sora to foster innovative creativity and narrative expansion through advanced video storytelling.
The company, also behind the widely used ChatGPT, continues to expand its repertoire in generative AI, including voice cloning and integrating its image generator, Dall-E, with ChatGPT.
Supported by Microsoft, OpenAI is now a leading force in the AI sector, with a valuation nearing $160 billion.
Before public access, technology reviewer Marques Brownlee previewed Sora, finding it simultaneously unsettling and impressive. He noted particular prowess in rendering landscapes despite some inaccuracies in physical representation. Early access filmmakers reported occasional odd visual errors.
What you can expect with Sora
Output options. Generate videos up to 20 seconds long in various aspect ratios. The new ‘Turbo’ model speeds up generation times significantly.
Web platform. Organize and view your creations, explore prompts from other users, and discover featured content for inspiration.
Creative tools. Leverage advanced tools like Remix for scene editing, Storyboard for stitching multiple outputs, Blend, Loop, and Style presets to enhance your creations.
Availability. Sora is now accessible to ChatGPT subscribers. For $200/month, the Pro plan unlocks unlimited generations, higher resolution outputs, and watermark removal.
Content restrictions. OpenAI is limiting uploads involving real people, minors, or copyrighted materials. Initially, only a select group of users will have permission to upload real people as input.
Territorial rollout. Due to regulatory concerns, the rollout will exclude the EU, UK, and other specific regions.
Navigating regulations and controversies
It maintains restricted access in those regions as OpenAI navigates regulatory landscapes, including the UK’s Online Safety Act, the EU’s Digital Services Act, and GDPR.
Controversies have also surfaced, such as a temporary shutdown caused by artists exploiting a loophole to protest against potential negative impacts on their professions. These artists accused OpenAI of glossing over these concerns by leveraging their creativity to enhance the product’s image.
Despite advancements, generative AI technologies like Sora are susceptible to generating erroneous or plagiarized content. This has raised alarms about potential misuse for creating deceptive media, including deepfakes.
OpenAI has committed to taking precautions with Sora, including restrictions on depicting specific individuals and explicit content. These measures aim to mitigate misuse while providing access to subscribers in the US and several other countries, excluding the UK and Europe.

OpenAI Kicks Off a New Era With Sora AI Videos
Tumblr media
t's the beginning of a new era for AI company OpenAI. ChatGPT users can now create AI-generated videos, thanks to this week's roll-out of Sora, OpenAI's video model.
The company has been developing a new version of the model, called Sora Turbo, for months and is now bringing the product out of research preview and making it available to the public. Sora is available starting now in the US but not yet in Europe or the UK.
With Sora, ChatGPT users can create video clips entirely with generative AI. You can start by entering the usual text prompt, but you can also upload images and videos to guide the model. Sora Turbo is "significantly" faster and comes with several new upgrades, according to CEO Sam Altman .
There's a lot to unpack in Sora AI. Let's dive in.
How does Sora Turbo work?
As with most AI image and video tools, you can enter a text prompt and the program will create short clips based on the ideas you described. With Sora, you can also upload photos and other videos to your prompts as reference material. You can also easily select the video's aspect ratio, resolution and duration, as well as how many variations you want the program to generate.
The results are anywhere from 5 to 20 seconds long with resolutions between 480 and 1080p. There are also other postgeneration editing features like storyboard, remix and loop for more fine-tuning. If your account is public, all your text-based videos are eligible to be shared on Sora's community Explore page. You can change this by toggling off Publish to explore in your Sora profile settings. An OpenAI help page says you can turn off model training in the same place, but CNET couldn't confirm it was active yet.

Sam Altman-led OpenAI, the San Francsico-based creator of ChatGPT, has launched Sora Turbo, a new and faster version of Sora, the company's text-to-video artificial intelligence (AI) model which it previewed in February. OpenAI's Sora Turbo (Courtesy: OpenAI) OpenAI has developed new interfaces to make it easier for users to prompt Sora Turbo with text, images and videos. People will be able to generate videos up to 1080p resolution and with a maximum duration of 20 seconds. The ‘Remix’ feature will allow you to replace, remove, or re-imagine elements in your clips, while the ‘Re-cut’ option will let you find and isolate the best frames, and extend them in either direction to complete a scene. On the other hand, with the ‘Storyboard’ feature, people can organise and edit unique sequences from their videos on a personal timeline. ‘Loop’ trims down and creates clips which repeat seamlessly. ‘Blend’ combines two videos into a single, seamless clip, while ‘Presets’ allows users to create and share styles to capture imagination. ‘Featured’ and ‘Recent’ feeds showcase a constantly updated stream of creations from the Sora community. How to access Sora Turbo? For this, one must subscribe to ChatGPT's Plus or Pro account. While Plus is priced at $20 (approx. ₹1,700) a month, Pro comes at a monthly cost of $200 (approx. ₹17,000). The AI tool is included in the plans at no additional charge. The Pro Plan includes 10x more usage, higher resolutions, and longer durations. A tailored pricing for various types of users will be made available early next year, according to OpenAI. Also, as per reports, Sora Turbo is currently unavailable in European Union, United Kingdom and Switzerland. https://www.hindustantimes.com/ht-img/img/2024/12/10/1600x900/Screenshot_2024-12-10_081600_1733798776188_1733798782532.png 2024-12-10 03:56:44

youtube
Prompt: A low-angle shot captures a flock of pink flamingos gracefully wading in a lush, tranquil lagoon. The vibrant pink of their plumage contrasts beautifully with the verdant green of the surrounding vegetation and the crystal-clear turquoise water. Sunlight glints off the water’s surface, creating shimmering reflections that dance on the flamingos’ feathers. The birds’ elegant, curved necks are submerged as they walk through the shallow water, their movements creating gentle ripples that spread across the lagoon. The composition emphasizes the serenity and natural beauty of the scene, highlighting the delicate balance of the ecosystem and the inherent grace of these magnificent birds. The soft, diffused light of early morning bathes the entire scene in a warm, ethereal glow.
[You can explore more prompt & video-generation examples on the official DeepMind release here].
Veo 2 vs Sora; DeepMind vs OpenAI
Veo 2 and OpenAI’s Sora are both groundbreaking AI video generation models, each with its own strengths.
While Sora excels in creative storytelling and imaginative scenarios, Veo 2 prioritizes realism and adherence to real-world physics. Veo 2 also offers a higher degree of control over the video generation process, allowing users to specify camera angles, lighting, and other cinematic elements.
Google’s direct comparison tests, utilizing 1,003 prompts from Meta’s MovieGenBench dataset and human evaluation of 720p, eight-second video clips, revealed Veo 2’s superiority over competitors like OpenAI’s Sora Turbo.
