Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tenyson, was a poet who lived from 1809-1992 was the Poet Laureate (one who is expected to write a poem for significant national occasions) to Queen Victoria and is the ninth most quoted author in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. His published his first book of poetry in 1829 with his brother while they were attending Trinity College as well as won the Chancellor's award. Before he graduated, though, he had to return home after his father died. He continued to write, though, publishing his second book of poetry in 1833, though after heavy criticism, he didn't publish another book for 10 years. In 1842, he published his third book of poetry in 1842, which included Ulysses. In 1850, he was appointed Poet Laureate.

Ulysses is the Roman version of Odysseus, the hero of the Odyssey, on which the poem is based, though there are hints of Dante's Inferno's character of Ulisse, who dwells among the false counselors in hell. Ulisse was condemned to hell for seeking more knowledge than humans should have and for his role in creating the Trojan horse. In Tennyson's poem, Ulysses describes his exploits from old age, that despite his joy at reunion with Penelope and Telemachus, he longs to return to the travels of his youth. Ulysses wants '[t]o strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield', to abandon his family and kingdom and return to his youthful explorations and exploits, to be the hero rather than the king. He views his own life as '[l]ife piled on life/Were all too little, and of one to me/Little remains', thinking Telemachus would be a better king because '[m]ost blameless is he, centred in the sphere/Of common duties'. He then turns to those who traveled with him to return to their voyages, though without a guarantee of return '…Come, my friends,/'Tis not too late…It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,/And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.' (the Happy Isles being Elysium, the place where heroes and the upright go after death.) He laments that they were '[m]ade weak by time and fate, but strong of will/To strive to seek, to find, and not to yield.'

THE OLDEST UNIVERSITIES IN THE WORLD

Contrary to what many would have expected, the oldest universities in the world are located in Africa, not in ancient Greece or Europe, a study has revealed. Timbuktu University Mali (989 CE – Present)

The University ofTimbuktu is a collective term for the teaching associated with three mosques in the city of Timbuktu in what is now Mali: the masajid (mosques) of Sankore, Djinguereber, and Sidi Yahya. This third oldest University in the world is one of three ancient centres of learning located in Timbuktu, Mali. It was officially established in 13BC and it prospered and became a very significant seat of learning in the world, especially under the reign of Mansa Musa (1307-1332) and the Askia Dynasty (1493-1591). The University of Sankore has its roots in the Sankore Mosque which was founded in 989 ADby Al-Qadi Aqib ibn Mahmud ibn Umar, the Supreme Judge of Timbuktu.’ At its peak, long before Europeans built universities, the university at Timbuktu had an average attendance of around 25 000 students within a city of around 100 000 people.

All of the universities of Timbuktu predate Islam and were originally learning centers for Dogon and Meroitic sciences, which flourished throughout the Sahel. Islam did not introduce universities to Timbuktu, Islam appropriated the indigenous African universities already in Timbuktu (as well as numerous other ancient African cities) and turned them into masjids. The Timbuktu Meroitic universities were appropriated into masjids in 989 ce. This is over 1,200 years after the original university was established.

However, despite the religious shift of the universities, their architectural heritage remains faithful to the indigenous pre-Islamic Sahelian adobe architecture.

sejujurnya, ini sangat aneh bagiku dan mungkin semua orang. Aku ga tau kenapa aku bisa takut--maksudku, jelas aku tekau sama orang karena beberapa situasi yang menjebakku seperti kurangnya pertemanan. Apa aku salah ya.. Padahal aku udah mencoba untuk ramah, tapi kenapa.. Kenapa tidak ada yang mau berteman denganku? Apa aku terlalu aneh?

Kalau boleh ngomong, aku pengen banget ikut di organisasi, jadi volunteer. Tapi aku terlalu takut orang-orang udah berkelompok dan bakal mengacuhkan aku. Apalagi ini bareng sama kating. Aku ga tau isu tentang Adbis itu solidaritasnya kurang memang bener apa yang sesuai di lapangan atau bukan, tapi rasanya.. mungkin bener aku yang salah.

Selain itu, aku juga mau sambil menjaga tubuhku dari banyaknya penyakit. Apa boleh aku beristirahat dulu? Aku merasa ini terlalu.. cukup menyebalkan. Kenapa organisasi itu ujungnya bisa jadi kelompok-kelompok kecil sih.. Gimana caranya biar waktu kuliahku tetap berguna ya.. Sedih banget bisa liat orang-orang dengan PD-nya nilai bagus dengan ikut organisasi.

Apalah remahan sepertiku yang akademik aja ga terlalu bagus, tapi ga ikut organisasi juga.. Andaikan aku tau gimana caranya biar bisa ikut organisasi tapi orang-orang ga pada ber-circle..

Apalagi orang yang bercircle biasanya orang yang populer dan ga mau di ajak buat ngobrol. Kan aku bisa kebingungan sama frustasi sendiri ya.. Kaya pas lagi Kombis. Itu sejujurnya, aku malah tentuin semua sendiri untuk skrip. Mereka nyebelin dan kebanyakan mikir. Aku ga tau lagi apa yang ada di pikiran mereka. Mereka mungkin mikir kalau itu tuh permainan yang bisa di ajak santai sama mereka. Tapi nyebelin rasanya ga bisa speak up.

Kalau speak up pun, biasanya bakal dipaksa buat ikut suara mayoritas. Kenapa ya aku begini.. Apa aga ada cara lain selain ikut organisasi apa.. Menyebalkan..
