PNR is short name for 'Passenger Name Record'. It is a record in the database of Indian Railways computer reservation system (IR-CRS) against which journey details for a passenger, or a group of passengers are saved.

To be specific, when a reserved railway ticket is booked for a train in Indian Railways, all the details of passengers are stored in relational database of centralized reservation system. These details are associated with a unique ten digit number. This reference number is called PNR and it is printed on the ticket.

Passenger's personal information like name, age, gender etc. is saved in the database against this reference number. It includes columns to store booking status and current status of the ticket.

As we know every train has limited number of seats, sometime one may not get a confirmed reserved ticket. Booking status of such waitlist (W/L) ticket changes when there is any availability of reserved seats due to cancellation. This new current reservation status is generally known as PNR status.

Where to find PNR number on ticket?

PNR number is generally printed at the top left corner of the printed tickets (tickets that are taken from railway station booking window). In case of the E – Ticket (tickets that are booked online or through IRCTC website), it is mentioned at top in separate cell.

IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) is the only official partner of Indian Railways that manages online ticket booking. Types of Indian Railways Trains & PNR Generation

First Indian Railway train was run in 1853 between Mumbai and Thane. Mumbai and Thane are western coastal districts of Maharashtra. Current Indian Railway trains are the result of gradual development in technology. Today it runs thousands of daily express and local passenger trains. Railway has categorized these trains according to their average speed and number of halts on their route. Below are the list of train types:

Metro Trains: These trains are equipped with latest technologies and facilities. It currently runs in few metro cities of India like Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata. Such metro trains are in demand and government had planned its expansion in other metro cities as well. Metro Rail tickets do not generate unique PNR number because one can not reserve a seat in these trains. These are moderate in speed and generally runs on their scheduled time.

Suburban Locals: They run only in few big Indian cities like Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. These are also examples of trains for which seat reservation is not possible and hence one can not get pnr status for tickets. These are further divided into slow locals and fast locals. Slow locals halt on every station while the fast ones halt only on main important stations.

Passenger Trains: Passenger trains can also be further classified into slow and fast passenger trains. They run between important small distanced cities.Slow passenger trains have stoppage at every single station in between their route. Reserved tickets are not available and hence unique pnr number generation is not done for tickets.

Express & Super-fast Express: These trains are relatively faster than the above mentioned. They run across long distances and one can book a reserve ticket in these trains. As tickets are reserved, booking system generates unique ten digit pnr number on each tickets to identify the traveler. PNR status checking facility are made available for non reserved train tickets.

Shatabdi and Janshatabdi Express Trains: These are high speed trains available in Indian Railway to connect moderate distanced important stations. They do not have sleeper coaches. They only contain seats for seating. Main difference between Shatabdi and Janshatabdi trains is that Janshatabdi trains have both AC and non AC coaches while Shatabdi trains are fully air-conditioned. Seats can be reserved and pnr status can be checked.

Garib Rath: These trains have AC 3 tier coaches and ticket price is relatively lower than the other air conditioned trains. One can check pnr status of Garib Rath at trainspnrstatus.com

Rajdhani Express: These are fully air conditioned trains and connects major cities of India. They are high priority trains and generally runs on their scheduled time. For example, the shortest distance that is covered between two successive stations is just 3 kms. The 3 kms long distance is between Nagpur station and Ajni station.

In contrast, the longest distance that is covered by a train is 4,273 kms. The distance is between the stations of Dibrugarh and Kanyakumari and the train that covers it is called the Vivek Express.

The station with the longest name is “Venkatanarasimharajuvaripeta” in Andhra Pradesh while the one with the smallest station name is “Ib” in Odisha.

The Trivandrum-Hazrat Nizamuddin Rajdhani Express train covers a distance of 528 kms without stopping!

MUMBAI: It hasn’t been an easy ride for Tushar Deshpande, who made an impressive IPL debut in Dubai on Wednesday night, taking two for 37, including the prize wicket of Ben Stokes, to star in Rajasthan Royals’ 13-run win over the Delhi Capitals. In the beginning of 2017, the talented Mumbai pacer, who had begun to impress with his pace and control in the city’s maidans while playing for Parsee Gymkhana in local cricket, went through tremendous personal strife. “In January, I suffered ankle posterior impingement, which required a surgery, and hamstring tear one after other. The injuries were going to keep me out the game for about a year. In March, I learnt that mother was suffering from (ovarian) cancer,” Deshpande told TOI from Dubai on Wednesday.

At a stage in his career where his sole focus had to be on cricket, Deshpande did well to cope with the massive personal blow, which ultimately saw his mother succumb to the deadly disease last year. “Her whole treatment period was tough, because it’s not just the cancer patient, but his/her family members too who too suffer, seeing the patient in so much pain. However, my father was a pillar of support for me at that time. Since I was injured in 2017, that one-and a-half-year period was very tough for me as I was not playing cricket, and my mom was suffering from cancer. Through that year, I just kept my hope, and focused on getting better with my rehab and fitness,” recalled the 25-year-old. On Wednesday night, Deshpande, bowling yorkers consistently, gave away just eight, when the Royals needed 22 off the final over, with Rahul Tewatia and Shreyas Gopal at the crease. After the game, his Capitals’ teammate and South African pace ace Kagiso Rabada praised the youngster’s ability to fire in yorkers at will in practice, and even called him a “future India prospect.” “I felt really good after making my team win and bowling in a crunch situation. It was something which I did not expect in my first game. I was just focusing on my death bowling whenever I was practicing, and just tried to execute what I had practiced. I was not trying anything new, as it was ‘game time’ and current situation. I’m now looking forward to do much better in the next game,” said Deshpande. A few tips from ‘KG’ in the nets about handling pressure helped the Mumbaikar cope with IPL arc-lights for the first time. “In the match, he didn’t say much. However, in practice sessions, I have been speaking to him about handling pressure in close games. He told me: ‘Back yourself and just decide which is the most effective ball in that situation, according to that wicket,'” reveals Deshpande, who was bought for Rs 20 lakh in the IPL auction by the Capitals earlier this year. Last week, the young turk, who was still awaiting his IPL debut at that time, sought tips from South African pace great Dale Steyn after a game between the Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Dubai. Deshpande sought Steyn’s advice on how to work on his fitness as a fast bowler. “Since he was the No 1 Test bowler for eight years, I asked him what exactly is the recipe for fitness for a fast bowler at the international level. I’ve managed to remain fit for first-class cricket, but I wanted to know how he remained fit for international cricket. He just said: ‘Its repetitive, good work, over and over again. It’s a simple thing, but you tend to miss it. It was important for me that Steyn told me this. I felt very good after listening to him,” Deshpande had said in a video tweeted by the Capitals.

He was either in the gym, hospital, practicing or playing matches,” said veteran journalist Makarand Waingankar, who’s the youngster’s mentor. A couple of years back, Deshpande had impressed West Indies pacer-turned commentator Ian Bishop with his pace and accuracy in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. On Wednesday night, Bishop praised Deshpande’s impressive start in the big league. “Congrats to @DelhiCapitals again. They are a formidable team. That was some of the most exciting fast bowling on show in one game. Nortje, Archer, Rabada and don’t forget Tushar Deshpande were brilliant. Oh, and Ravi Ashwin too very good,” tweeted Bishop.

In 2016, Deshpande was amongst the four fast bowlers chosen by the IDBI Federal Life Insurance Bowling Foundation for a training stint at the Centre of Cricketing Excellence in Queensland in Australia, under former Australian pace great Jeff Thomson. “From the time he came under ‘Thommo’ in that Bowling foundation till now, I have been impressed with his work ethic. He proved that yoga, especially pranayam is useful to a cricketer,” said Waingankar. Deshpande plays for Parsee Gymkhana in Mumbai’s local cricket. “It was an absolutely brilliant performance by him on debut. I’m really happy for him and his father. Unfortunately, he lost his mother last year to cancer. However, he stayed mentally strong, worked very hard on his fitness and waited for his chance. I always used to tell him just one thing, do all the things that are within your control and leave the uncontrollable, and he did that,” Khodadad S Yazdegardi, who’s the Vice-President and cricket secretary Parsee Gymkhana, told TOI on Wednesday. Yazdegardi is also a member of the Mumbai Cricket Association‘s (MCA) Apex Council. “I feel proud, and felt even more proud when the Capitals’ bowling coach (Ryan) Harris praised him a lot about his attitude and said he is a very good death overs bowler. He proved him right by conceding just eight in the last over. His biggest plus point is that he is a very good student of the game and a fast learner. In short, he has a very strong character and always gives his 200%, even while playing for our club in the local tournaments,” praised Yazdegardi. Interestingly, the IPL hasn’t been amongst Deshpande’s top priorities. The talented pacer wants to play for India in Test cricket. A couple of years back, he was asked by Kings XI Punjab to appear for a trial at Mohali, but he stunningly, he preferred to skip what some would term as the ‘chance of a lifetime,’ deciding instead to turn out for his club Parsee Gymkhana in a Purshottam Shield second round match against CCI scheduled at the same time at Parsee Gymkhana. Last year, a big furore took place in Mumbai cricket when Deshpande was dropped from the Mumbai team for the Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy. After much hue and cry, he was eventually included in the squad, and proved his worth with some good spells.

Me : Chill! this isn't the first time, i am getting out of the hometown, Maa!

But yes, this time it's a great feeling to travel with you guys after so many years. I am thankful to to you and God also. I will always be grateful to you and Almighty!

We were at our seats in a 3Tier AC Coach of Duronto from Howrah to Mumbai, Swapno ka Sahar!

A lot of partially known faces in the train, since a lot of people had applied, cleared, interviewd and got selected for Post graduation programme in the very same institute, I had choose to completey post graduation.

My city, Kolkata was sulking day by day with literates having no jobs, since political power at that time was focusing on beautification of the city. Their agendas was to bring "Shilpo and Shilpayan to the state" but not industries. Selling Chops and chaa had been the slogan and point of topic. No business is small, everyone has similar opportunities, the political party for the time being is responsible for job culture homicide due to which a lot of people like me, identified so lately that it's almost nothing in here, so let's start our suffer from traveling or migrating to another city!

Many of my friends chose to flew out of the country, might have some bigger vision!

When everything was in turmoil, People like me decide to move on with what we have and went on seeking for a better future.

Let me clear the air a bit, Myself Avishek Dutta, only son of a small business owner, and a home maker, had not been doing great in life back then, graduated with a technical degree from not a renowned College, but only a degree and some ideas and that spark in mind and heart to survive the crisis back then! 2016 I, quit Job due to an accident, was bed ridden for Half of the year, felt like starting something of my own with minimum resources and supervision.

Before that, had built a network worth 21000$ only! I jad grown my taste in photography since graduation 2nd year back in 2012.

Since belonging from a middle class family, my father thought it was too much I asked for, and even I also didn't pressurize him to buy me a DSLR, I started working as a free lancer, and once I was too much into to buy myself a new car also, but something clicked my mind that help me to utilize that experience and grow more in life rather than settling down at home city that too at an age of 20. I realised one thing, that earning money is not so easy, it requires tremendous skills and conveniencing power to earn and grow. I started career counseling without a proper career, it paid me a lot back then, my network was very strong back then, but soon I realized, it's not a full time career since I was pursuing Engineering, yes just another sheep from a cattle, Hell no! Not another sheep! I was that creature who controls the cattle and have the ability to control the cattle. I soon realised that, Money is not all I seek in life, respect is much more valuable than money! Money can buy you a lot of stuffs but respect is what that justifies your earning in much more better way, so decided back then to pursue some more professional degree and will take a job at a good company.

The greed and hungerness of earning in a short span and without anything else to take back, I burried that thought for a little while, since I seek legitimate earnings! I seek much more like respect in life and a good life style too.

I scratched my balls for few years, traveling few cities with minimum income to survive and finally came back to home and decided on doing professional degree, it was indeed high time of my career to decide upon. I choose Mumbai to be the city since none of my friends decided to step in and the degree as Post graduate diploma in Management on Markrting and Sales since Engineering and Management was a trend back then and leaving all excuses, I believed in myself, that I had always been a strategic person from the point I took admission in engineering! May be I made a wrong choice, but experiences and depth of situations and people you learn from your mistakes only.

So, 2017, 6th June, with the most positive thinking and optimism level at it's peak, I started my journey, leaving family, friends and comfort zone to a next level.

I was like, throw shits at me, I will make paper and sell or use it as an energy of some kind.

With lots of known faces in the train, accompanied by one well known face Deba, we smoked and gossiped through out the train journey, my parents were travelling with me and had also arranged and convinced someone in Mumbai to be my local guardian too,. though i never visited his place in last 3 years!

I was excited to meet new people in life. I am too exicted to meet new people all the time.

After a day, I reached Mumbai at Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus around 12.30pm.

Took a local of one and a half hours at that time, to come down to that place where I was about to learn make and do some epic things in my life!

Rest you all know!

I was not some special kid, I was not that influencial, I was not someone having a very good past experience, I am being nice to you means, You really matter to me! I being so humble these days means I learnt to stay calm and think positive, whatever crisis we could have faced. I saw people, I met people, I stayed with them, had food with them, laughed with them, travelled with them, nurtured them, also took intensive care for them, treating them like my own blood, studied them, realised and identified several behavioural traits after nurturing them for so long.

Secret thing - I can read your emotions while we chat online! Sorry for judging in a most appropriate way. But it's true.

Learning is a never ending process, don't get bored of it, don't stop doing it, practise it everyday, evrytime and every moment you breathe. The World is full of positive if you have the eyes to look at it.

I am and will always be a life long learner!

Mumbai Local News: Doors of Virar-Bound AC Train Opened Manually At These 8 Main Stations

Mumbai’s air-conditioned (AC) local trains commuters on Western Railways (WR) faced inconvenience after a major technical glitch occurred on Thursday afternoon, July 28.

According to reports, the automatic doors of the Virar-bound AC local train of three coaches did not open at eight key stations.

The train was operating between Churchgate and Virar. However, door of the train did not open at Andheri, Borivali, Dahisar, Mira Road, Bhayandar, Naigaon, Nalasopara and Virar railway stations.

It has come to light that later the railway authorities manually opened the doors for passengers to board and deboard from the AC local train compartment.

The train halted at Borivali railway station at 3.39 pm and was held up till 3.47 pm to inspect why the doors did not open. At other stations, the doors of the three compartments were opened manually by railway personnel.

Owing to this, the train was delayed by a total of 10 minutes till it reached the Virar railway station.

Official further stated that the system override was given at Borivali but was not successful and then the batteries of the electronic systems were reset at Virar, following which the train started functioning normally.

The zonal railway has launched an enquiry into the incident and will be taking steps to prevent such incidents in future. Meanwhile, a detailed analysis is also being done. It looks like a problem in the sensors and control card of the local train, official added. The train was later moved to Mumbai Central car shed. If reports are to believed, a similar incident occurred on July 12 on the Central Railway door of the compartment of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) bound Kalyan AC local and did not open at Dadar railway station and passengers had to de-board at Byculla railway station. Central Railways (CR) has also initiated a probe into the incident.

11008 Pune Mumbai Deccan express is not a very fast train – it takes 4 hrs 2 mins to cover a distance of 192 km; an average speed of 47.6 kmph. It also has 9 stops i.e. an average of almost a stop every 21 km! 😛 However, these stats are not enough to dismiss the train as a supercrawler; as I found out on Sunday 22nd April. It was berthed on Platform 5 of Pune; and doing the honours was chocolate brown KYN WCAM2-6P 21861.

My coach C2 was of a 1996 make, and was 2nd from the loco :).

There were plug points in all bays, and the cushions and curtains were of a pleasing maroon brown :). The coach was had last gone for POH in March 2017. I had a non-trackside window seat. We departed right on the dot, at 15 15. The departure horn was interesting – there was a shrill as melodious HT horn mixed with an LT horn! :O I saw Pune WDP4D 40265 in a shed in the distant left. A family got in during the 1-minute halt at SVJR. There was some weird noise coming from the AC for a while, as another family got in at Khadki. Soon we were blasting away before slowing down at Pimpri home signal, but again accelerating through the station. At Chinchwad, there was a local on the left and a Plasser machine on a siding in the distant left. We ripped through the outskirts of Pune, passing Akurdi in a blur.

Meanwhile, my ticket was checked – I showed the TTE my ticket SMS as well as the photo ID proof (My Driving License). The shrill HT horn and the LT horn were used more often; with the melodious HT horn being used occasionally. Reached Talegaon at 15 57, 2 mins late. We had covered the last 28 km in 24 mins – at 70 kmph :). The humble express had started showing us what it was capable of :D. Some people got in during the 2-min stop here. I had a nap. When I woke up, we were pulling into Lonavala at 16 25, 3 mins early. 3 families got in during the 8-minute halt, and the coach was almost full now (it had been almost empty when I boarded) :O! We stopped very briefly outside the station for just 10 seconds, before taking the UP line; beginning our descent down the Bhor Ghats. There was a multi-storey car park on the left before Khandala.

Then came the real thrill of the ghats, with many tunnels as well as breathtaking views of the valley – including forests and the mountain roads with their numerous hairpin bends :). After the customary brake-testing stop at Monkey Hill, we surprisingly switched to the Midline! :O After the halt for train staff at Jambrung, we were again treated to panoramic views of the valley as well as the old Mumbai-Pune highway :).

The last pic was a fluke shot – thanks to a stroke of luck that caused the hazy view from outside the AC window to be transformed into that of mountains being reflected! 😛 Arrived at Karjat at 17 32, 14 mins late; just as 11019 CSMT-BBS Konark express departed. There was a Mirinda orange and cream Pune WDM3D 11370 in the distant right. After a stop of 3 mins, the LP decided to set the pace right away; and we blasted through Bhivpuri Road with continuous and melodious HT honking. https://ashwinkumar1989net.files.wordpress.com/2018/04/11008-deccan-exp-blasting-bhivpuri-road-april-18.mp3 Then we slowed down to pass through Neral at a sedate pace, before picking up the pace again from Shelu home. This time there was no let up. Badlapur, Ambernath and Ulhasnagar zoomed past us in a blur; with the chief having his fingers on all the 3 horn buttons!! 😉 We finally slowed down at Vithalwadi home before entering KYN at 18 11, 9 mins late; on PF7.

So we had covered the last 47 km in 36 mins at an average of approximately 78 kmph! An LHB train departed the station just as we entered. As we left after a halt of 3 mins, the chief was not done yet! We had a thundering run (again with liberal use of both the HT horns!!) till the Diva LC, where there is a PSR of 50 kmph; during which we overtook two locals. The speed restrictions in the Parsik Tunnel seem to be in place again, as we crawled; and I could see water dripping from the roof – no wonder! 😀 We entered Thane at 18 33, only 5 mins late; on PF6 – just as 11023 CSMT-KOP Sahyadri express skipped the station behind another chocolate brown KYN WCAM2-6P. I got down here and boarded a local towards CSMT. Saw an elusive KYN WCM6 20187 (AC converted) in blue WAG7 livery at Mulund yard. Then I took an auto from Vikhroli to reach home by 19 30. Thus ended an eventful journey during which Deccan express had shown that it is not a train to be underestimated; thanks to the rockstar loco 21861 and of course a rockstar LP! 😉

We all know that the entire world is wonder-struck by the network of our Indian Railways. Our country, India, has the fourth largest railway network in the world, in terms of its size. Most of us wonder as to how this railway network, that spreads across 69.182 kilometers, has been managed so well, ever since its inception in 1853. And it has only been getting bigger with time!

Speaking of railways, there is another subset of it that is world famous. People from all over the world make it a point to go on a short ride in the trains belonging to this subset, just to experience the thrill that it gives. National, international, lifestyle, and travel channels — they all have at least one of their episodes dedicated to this railway network. Can you guess which network it is? We’re sure you won’t be able to guess unless we mention the name “Mumbai” to you. There, didn’t the bulb above your heads just light up reading that? (Haha)

So, yes, we’re talking about the aamchi Mumbai’s local train network, which is also known as the Mumbai Suburban Railways. It is said that this railway was the first passenger railway that was built by the British East India Company and is also the oldest railway system in the Asian continent. We can consider the Mumbai local trains as a defining feature of this city. They are a very crucial part of this city’s existence. Okay, if you’re wondering why are we talking so much about the Mumbai local trains, hold on, the answer lies in the next few lines.

Mumbai Local Trains Change The Ladies Coach Logo From “Woman In A Ghunghat” To “Woman In Power Suit”

We really love this transformation that has been done by the Mumbai railway department. For decades, women in India have been striving hard to fight the orthodox norms of society, just so that they can live independently and look after themselves in a better manner. On May 27, 2019, the Western Railways tweeted that to keep up with the changing times, they’ve modernized the logo of women’s coaches. They said that this step was taken by them to portray “the women of today” in an apt way. The Western Railways Chief PRO, Ravindra Bhakar, was quoted saying, “The idea was to adopt an icon that will do justice, and represent today’s women in this city, who are independent and successful.”

The older version of the logo had a saree-clad woman wearing a ghunghat over her head, with a bindi on her forehead. The new logo is of a woman in a modern suit and who sports a confident smile on her face.

Mumbai is known all over the world as the city of dreams. People from faraway places come here hoping to fulfill their dreams and become what they have always aspired to be. For the Western Railways to take this step to truly present the spirit of independent women, who travel to their workplaces in the local trains, in the form of a logo, is a very commendable and creative initiative that is in keeping with the spirit of Mumbai.

And it’s not just the logo, peeps, in the tweet the WR also mentioned that the women’s coaches will also have posters of strong women inspirations like Saina Nehwal (the ace badminton player), Mithali Raj (the captain of Indian women’s cricket team), and Kalpana Chawla (the first Indian woman astronaut). Their achievements too will be displayed in these posters. This is a part of a revamping project that the Western Railways have undertaken. Presently, two of the 12-coach trains have been upgraded with the new logo and posters. Another two will be revamped and open for the public in the coming few weeks.

The Mixed Response Of The Public
