Media Mapping Survey by Top PR Agencies in India for Q1-FY21-22
This survey report provides information obtained through media analysis, regarding the news trends across major publications in the country. This survey report will pay particular attention to the news trends in the first quarter of FY2021-22 when the country was reeling under heavy pandemics. These observations do have limitations that will be noted and are based on a total number of stories categorised by different sectors. Not only India, but the entire world is experiencing a devastating wave of COVID-19. The spread of COVID-19 in India was initially characterized by fewer cases and lower case fatality rates compared with numbers in many developed countries, primarily due to a stringent lockdown and a demographic dividend. However, economic constraints forced a staggered lockdown exit strategy, resulting in a spike in COVID-19 cases. This factor, coupled with low spending on health as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP), created mayhem because of inadequate numbers of hospital beds and ventilators and a lack of medical personnel, especially in the public health sector. Nevertheless, technological advances, supported by a strong research base, helped contain the damage resulting from the pandemic. In the first ten days of May, India’s reported count of COVID-19 deaths was nearly 40,000, roughly accounting for a third of deaths worldwide during this period. The media ecosystem continues to be challenging this year – and that was before the pandemic. To inform the citizens during these uncertain times, newsrooms and media houses across the country have made pandemic coverage a priority. While there is an abundance of news to be reported on the global pandemic, the esteemed media houses of the country pointed out several other news trends to keep people educated and aware.
THE INDIAN MEDIA
“FREE PRESS IS ESSENTIAL TO FREE SOCIETY”
The Indian Media Industry is one of the world’s most diverse and vibrant in addition to being largely free and fair. The Indian media landscape has changed significantly over the last one decade. With the advancement in technology, the Indian media industry has been burgeoning like never before and expanded its reach, in terms of the number of outlets, whether in television, radio, print or digital.
At this hour of the global pandemic, media has successfully played the role of a watchdog of the government functionaries and has also aided in participatory communication in raising major issues faced by the citizens of the country. Several media platforms across the country kept providing credible news and information to the citizens of the country when they most needed it without letting fear affect them amid COVID-19. The onset of the global pandemic and ensuing lockdown has dealt a severe blow to the Indian economy. It is being reported that the Indian Media & Entertainment sector, which saw a contraction of around 24 per cent at Rs 1.38 lakh crore in the pandemic-struck 2020, is expected to log growth this year and double its revenue to Rs 2.68 lakh crore by 2025.
Print newspapers in India have been seeing a significant surge in revenue, making it the largest global market for the industry. The most popular daily in the country is “The Times of India” that had the highest average readership in 2017. India’s print industry is to be able to retain their audiences through digital platforms, while still maintaining enough advertising and subscription revenue to continue different editions.
TREND ANALYSIS OF COVID-19 OUTBREAK IN INDIA
More than 15 countries including the US, Russia, France and the United Kingdom rushed critical emergency use equipment to enable India counter the COVID-19’s deadly second wave. Ministry of External Affairs announced that several countries are sending hundreds of oxygen concentrators, respirators and large quantities of liquid oxygen to help India at this hour of the pandemic. The Delhi High Court announced that it will take up court proceedings through virtual mode from April 9 to April 23. India became the first country in the world to report over 4 lakh new cases on April 30, 2021. It was being speculated that the COVID-19 wave that plunged India into the world’s biggest health crisis has the potential to worsen in the coming weeks, with some research models projecting that the death toll could more than double from current levels. Several states of the country introduced lockdowns, although Prime Minister Narendra Modi resisted a national effort after one imposed by the Central government last year fueled a humanitarian crisis with migrant workers fleeing the cities on foot and in some cases bringing the virus with them. A devastating second wave of coronavirus in India has seen hospitals and crematoriums overwhelmed and widespread shortages of oxygen and medicines. Hospitals across India are also experiencing oxygen shortages, with some forced to put up signs warning of a lack of supplies. War of words erupted between the Central government and several state governments such as Delhi & Maharashtra government over oxygen supply.
Fitch group company (India Ratings) said “the second wave of COVID-19 infections will be less disruptive than the first wave for the business environment as corporates are better prepared”. But it was being reported that smaller businesses including micro, small and medium enterprises are laying off more employees as demand and sales have plummeted due to localised lockdowns implemented by the state governments. The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, recently said that “the unemployment rate in the country has touched a four-month high as over 70 lakh jobs have been impacted.” Amid the concerns regarding shortage of COVID-19 vaccines in the national capital, the Delhi government recently stated that “the vaccination of the 18-44 age group remained suspended for the fifth consecutive day” and further informed that there is no COVAXIN stock available for any age group.
AAP MLA Atishi said “Delhi has already shut 235 of the 368 inoculation centres for this category due to a shortage of vaccines.” Few other states including Maharashtra suspended vaccination for 18-44 age group, citing shortage of doses. Amid the COVID-19 outbreak in the country, cases of Mucormycosis (Black Fungus) have emerged in patients who were in the recovery phase of the disease. Hundreds of corpses were also found floating in the Ganga river or buried in the sand of its banks in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, fearing they were COVID-19 infected.
Prime Minister during his latest address to the nation said "The Centre is taking back total control of vaccination now, will be implemented in next two weeks. The Centre will give free vaccines to states for all above 18. From 21 June, the Centre will provide free vaccines to states." Prime Minister also announced free ration for the poor under Prime Minister Garib Kalyan Yojana till Diwali.
As the second wave of coronavirus in the country continues to slow down, several states have started easing the strict restrictions which were imposed to check the spread of the deadly virus. Delhi resumed the Metro train services with 50 per cent seating capacity.
Malls, markets and market complexes were allowed to open between 10 am to 8 pm on odd-even basis in accordance with their shop numbers. Private offices also opened up with 50 per cent manpower. In Uttar Pradesh, the curfew continues to remain in districts that have more than 600 actives cases. With states unlocking across the country and the Delta variant still around, health experts are continuously stressing on the need to re-open with a robust vaccination strategy and COVID appropriate behaviour.
The Drugs Controller General of India (DGCA) has granted its nod to Indian pharmaceutical giant Cipla to import Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for restricted emergency use in the country. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) extended the restrictions on scheduled international passenger flights to and from India extended till July 31st, 2021. DGCA also stated “However, international scheduled flights may be allowed on selected routes by the competent authority on a case-to-case basis.”
US President Joe Biden and house unanimously passed a resolution recognizing the devastating impact of COVID-19 in India and expressing the sense of the House of Representatives to urgently facilitate assistance. Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) recently stated that India crossed the milestone of conducting 400 million tests for COVID-19 since the pandemic began, with the last 50 million tests being conducted over the last 24 days. The United States’ National Institutes of Health reported that India’s first indigenously developed COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin is able to effectively neutralise the Alpha and Delta variants of SARS-CoV-2. Arvind Kejriwal calls people to donate oximeter for villages - Delhi News | ViralHai News [ad_1]
Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday appealed to the public, civil society members and party workers across the country to donate pulse oximeters to the AAP to set up an 'oxygen testing center' Could. To reduce the number of Kovid-19 deaths in rural India.
While digitally addressing AAP volunteers across the country, Kejriwal said that Delhi's Kovid-19 situation is under control, but the situation is still poor in other parts of the country, especially villages. On Sunday, Kejriwal's birthday, the Chief Minister appealed to AAP supporters to donate oximeters instead of sending them gifts. He also said that AAP volunteers would be trained to check oxygen saturation levels in Kovid-19 patients in these villages.
“I want to appeal to all AAP volunteers, supporters, donors and well wishers of the country to help us. We plan to distribute responsibilities among our volunteers of providing oximeters in the villages. This is a personal effort. In a village the person responsible for the oximeter will send them to the homes of needy people, and they can test their oxygen level. If Kovid is at a distance from the testing center, they may be admitted to the nearest hospital.
The AAP chief said he was concerned that more than 60,000 fresh cases and around 800-1,000 deaths are being recorded every day in the country.
He said, 'I would not say that we have won the battle against Kovid-19 in Delhi, but we are in better condition today than two months ago, which has reduced the fear among the people. We have taken many measures - we built plasma banks, house isolation, increased testing and introduced beds in Delhi. But the number of cases is continuously increasing in the whole country.
“Every government, whether it is the state or the center, is addressing the situation in various ways. Now that Kovid-19 is spreading in villages, it is a matter of concern, because in the last 70 years, we have not been able to provide good health facilities in our villages. It is easy to find doctors and hospitals in cities, but if Kovid-19 spreads to villages, it will prove worrisome.
Kejriwal said that after introducing domestic segregation in Delhi, his government learned a lot. "For example, of 10,000 cases, only 1,000 cases were serious (on average) and we treated the remaining 9,000 cases at home. If we had hospitalized all 10,000 cases, we would need 10,000 beds that were not available. Were, ”he said.
Along these lines, the AAP chief also suggested a three-step strategy, which could be implemented in villages. “By implementing house isolation, asymptomatic people or people with mild symptoms will be treated at home. Second, if the gram panchayat sends oximeters or oxygen cylinders to people's homes, they can be saved if their oxygen levels fall, ”Kejriwal said.
The AAP chief continued that the biggest problem with Kovid-19 was the decrease in oxygen levels, resulting in loss of life. He urged the public to donate as much oximeter as they can to the AAP, so that it can distribute them to the villages.
“We will also set up oxygen testing centers in the villages. We will train people to take all precautions. We will show you how to wear a mask, hygiene and other steps. First of all, if you want to donate oximeter to Aam Aadmi Party, please contact us. And second, if you want to take responsibility for your village, please let us know. All the State Coordinators, District Coordinators, please open as many Oxygen Testing Centers in your villages and try to save as many people as possible.

The party did not win any seat in the 2015 Delhi assembly polls. “We will definitely improve. Moreover, the exit polls are not the gospel truth. We are confident of winning a few seats,” said party’s incharge for Delhi PC Chacko on Monday. 6:50 am IST
AAP confident, BJP says exit polls will fall flat
Counting of votes polled in the high-stakes Delhi Assembly elections is set to take place on Tuesday, with exit polls predicting a big win for the ruling AAP even as BJP leaders maintained that the surveys will fall flat. Strong rooms spread across the city storing the EVMs are being heavily guarded, with a “three-layer security ring”, Delhi CEO Ranbir Singh has said. 6:40 am IST
Traffic movement affected
Traffic movement will remain closed from Bhajanpura towards Gagan Cinema (both carriageways) due to vote counting tomorrow. Motorists are advised to take alternative route, the Delhi Traffic Police tweeted early today. Muni Maya Ram Marg near Guru Nanak Dev Institute of Technology (both carriageways) shall remain closed due to vote counting today. Traffic movement will remain closed on Road number 224 Dwarka from sector 7/9 crossing towards sector 9/10 crossing due to vote counting, they tweeted. 6:33 am IST
What exit polls have predicted
All five exit polls have predicted a third term for Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, while the BJP is expected to improve its performance from the 2015 assembly elections when it won only three seats. However, only little is expected to change for Congress, which was in power between 1998 and 2013 but drew a blank in the last assembly polls in 2015. 6:25 am IST
Arvind Kejriwal eyes third term
Delhi is all set for results of assembly elections held on February 8. Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP is eying a third term in the national capital. Most exit polls have predicted AAP’s clear win with the party expected to get anything between 47 seats to 68 seats out of the 70 assembly seats. 6:20 am IST
500 security personnel at each counting centre
Until the counting day in Delhi, each centre will be guarded by at least 200 security personnel while on the final day the security will be doubled, a senior Delhi police official has said. Deputy commissioner of police, Sharat Sinha said the strength of Delhi Police each centre will have up to at least 500 personnel on the day of counting, including senior officers of the rank of assistant commissioner of police (ACP). 6:15 am IST
Three-layer security cover at strongrooms
The Delhi chief electoral officer (CEO) Ranbir Singh on Monday assured that foolproof security arrangements have been made in and around each of the counting centres. “A three-layer security cover has been provided at the strongrooms, as per the election commission’s directions. Security around the counting centres and in the areas has also been beefed up,” he said. 6:10 am IST
Over 2600 poll officials involved
As Delhi gears up for poll results, officials from the poll body said that around 2,600 counting staff, including 33 counting observers, are involved in the counting of votes on Tuesday. 6:00 am IST
Counting begins at 8 am
Counting of votes in Delhi assembly election 2020 will begin on Tuesday at 8 am. Read the full article

The booth strategy that BJP is banking upon
Latest Updates - M. N. & Associates - BAREILLY: For a retired armed forces personnel, Tejpal is a rather busy man these days. A 60-year-old from Thiriya Khurd booth of Meerganj Vidhan Sabha, he starts bright and early. Not for a morning walk or running errands. Rather, with a voter list in his hand, he knocks on his neighbours’ doors to verify their names. Being a booth-level worker of the BJP in Bareilly’s Meerganj assembly seat, he takes great pride in his new job: verifying voters and helping others get voter ID cards. “BhaJa-Pa (as the BJP is referred in the Hindi belt) mein booth hee sab kuchh hai (Booth means everything in the BJP). Booth mazboot toh party mazboot (The party is as strong as its booth),” he avers. The exercise is part of the party’s Lok Sabha Sanchalak Samiti initiative ahead of the 2019 polls. The booth is the lowest unit in an electoral battle. That’s where most voters will come in personal contact with a representative of the party. Typically, a booth will have between 1,000 and 1,300 voters. BJP’s attempt in recent years has been to strengthen its booth-level presence. Every page of a booth-level voter’s list, comprising of some 50 voters, is assigned to a party worker designated a panna pramukh. Every booth typically has some 20 panna pramukhs. Ten-fifteen booths form one sector and 10-15 sectors comprise a mandal. There are 3-5 mandals in an assembly constituency. 66196501 With the prime minister enjoining party workers to regularly interact with voters of their respective constituencies and ensure that at least 20 youth and families are working with the party in every polling booth, public representatives have started mapping polling booths and ensuring ground strength. "Booth management is based on the old technique of man-to-man contact. The basic premise is that the candidate can’t reach out to every voter but a boothlevel worker — who resides in the same mohalla or ward — can,” says Sangit Kumar Ragi, professor, political science, University of Delhi. The politics of yore had politicians — from seasoned to wannabes — walking the long mile and meeting voters personally on a regular basis. Then a time came when thanks to technology, leaders got distanced from the voters they represent. Today, man-to-man contact is back. “In fact, through booth management, the BJP was able to evolve from being a party of the urban and semi-urban to one with a base in rural areas. Incidentally, technology made the job much easier,” says Ragi.SOME FORMER BOOTH-LEVEL WORKERS IN BJP 66196503 66196513 As the BJP sounds the poll bugle for 2019 with the PM himself exhorting its foot soldiers to make “Mere Booth, Sabse Mazboot (my polling booth, the strongest)”, ET Magazine travelled to a key constituency of UP (along with sixtime MP and Union Minister for Labour and Employment Santosh Gangwar) for a closer look at BJP’s booth management strategy.Welcome to Bareilly, known for its soorma (a kind of kajal), kites, cuisine, baans & barfi (bamboo work & sweets). The Lok Sabha constituency has five assembly seats: Meerganj, Nawabganj, Bhojipura, Bareilly city and Cantt — all held by the BJP. Bareilly division has five Lok Sabha seats: Bareilly, Aonla, Badaun, Shahjahanpur and Pilibhit. Except Badaun — represented by Akhilesh Yadav’s cousin Dharmendra Yadav — rest are with the BJP.Arms & ArmourPucca roads from Bareilly city lead us to a nondescript building of one Sant Mangal Puri Inter College in Meerganj. A boothlevel committee meeting is on. Volunteers have assembled under a Jamun tree on the college premises that has doubled up as a meeting point keenly listening to what their president has to say. “Saathiyon, aapko har booth mein jana hai, pachaas vote badane hai, pachaas vote katvane hai (Visit every booth; get 50 new voters added, and get 50 defunct votes deleted),” says Bhagwan Singh. “Get the names of people who are either dead or have migrated, got married elsewhere, or those who have double votes deleted,” he tells the gathering. 66196583 For an "ideological party" that gives great importance to organisation and workers, its strategy boils down to booth and youth. "Remember you also have to focus on youth who will turn 18 by Jan 1, 2019. Give them Form 6 and ensure they fill it immediately. Soon it is the turn of district secretary Veerendra Gangwar to speak up." "Yeh matdaata soochi hee humara hathiyaar hai (This voter list is our weapon). Oil it well and we shall indeed succeed," says Gangwar. The ubiquity of smartphones means the age-old strategy of person-to-person contact is conducted with the aid of technology."Booth management will only get more comprehensive and organised for 2019," adds Ragi. Party insiders tell us how they plan to have a social media coordinator for every single booth for 2019. "We aim to spread the government message down to the last," he says. Here is how. "The national team will send their tweets to all states. The state units will then pass it on to each district and the district will then send to each mandal and eventually to the booth worker. He will then send it to his WhatsApp group of voters."Opposition, meanwhile, is smelling foul. "In the name of 'strengthening booth', they are getting our supporters 'votes deleted,' Samajwadi Party president for Uttar Pradesh, Naresh Uttam, tells ET Magazine. All parties allegedly aim at getting the core votes of opposition parties deleted from the electoral rolls. Booth workers typically comprise of panna pramukh, booth adhyaksh and, lately, social media coordinator. They do all the backstage electioneering work, including helping people get voter ID cards, managing the electoral rolls, holding corner meetings and talking up the party's achievements in the government, canvassing for candidates, arranging vehicles to bring voters to the booth and organising campaign meetings for senior party leaders. 66196585 "We have given a list of 23 tasks that a booth worker ought to do. This includes how to induct, who to induct, what to discuss and what not to discuss, among others. This exercise will go on till January after which big and small conventions will be held at booth, mandal and sector level," says one senior organisation leader of the BJP on the condition of anonymity. The exercise of voters' verification - whereby workers will visit every household - will go on till October 20. The enormity of this exercise is hard to fathom. There are 1,63,000 booths in UP alone. That means the BJP needs 32 lakh workers just to man booths. This is an increase of 15,000 from the summer of 2017 when the state went to polls. "Booth level committees have been reconstituted at 1,40,400 polling booths," says the BJP leader.Back at the meeting at the inter college, all instructions have been given, queries raised and answered. A tollfree number is announced by the conveyor that is keyed in by each worker. Now it's time for the chief guest to speak. Six-time MP from Bareilly and Union minister for labour and employment rises and does not lose a minute to send the message straight: "Mitron, aap jante ki Chhatra Pal ji (MLA from Baheri assembly seat of Pilibhit Lok Sabha) isse pehle wala chunav (2012 assembly elections) kitne vote se hare they?""Atthaara vote se (by 18 votes)", listeners reply in chorus. Gangwar digs deeper in history and fishes example from other parties. "And in Rajasthan there was one Congress candidate (CP Joshi) who lost by one vote (in 2008) and owing to that, he could not become the chief minister. Ek-ek vote nirnayak hai (each vote is decisive). Due to diligence of our booth-level workers, we won all Bareilly seats by getting 51% vote share. Have you ever wondered what will happen if others (opposition parties) get together? But we can still win by taking each vote seriously and making every booth stronger," he signs off. The sun is about to set, but not before the minister enjoins workers to carry on the exercise every day, one booth at a time. Govt may pay part of woman worker’s salary during maternity leave: Santosh GangwarUnion Minister for Labour and Employment (Independent Charge) Santosh Gangwar tells ET how the government creates an enabling environment for workers. Edited excerpts:You are a six-time MP from Bareilly. Why aren’t there enough jobs and industry in the constituency?Bareilly’s problem is not joblessness but a glut of engineering and medical institutions that churn out more students than the market can employ. What about the situation at an all-India level? The Modi government is often criticised for not creating enough jobs?Let me clarify: it is not the work of the labour and employment ministry to create jobs. Our work is to create an enabling environment for workers at all levels. Towards that end, the Union government has taken many steps to enhance their working conditions, safety and social security and also to improve their living standards. In the past two years, 1 crore workers have been linked with ESIC (Employees’ State Insurance Corporation) benefits and more than 1 crore have been brought in the fold of the EPFO (Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation). Efforts are on to increase the government’s contribution to new employee’s EPF so that employers don’t have to bear this share. As far as job creation is concerned, lack of data on number of people getting employed is a major hindrance in getting the correct number of jobs created. What about women employees? The government increased maternity leaves from 12 to 26 weeks but reports says new hirings for women have actually come down in one year. We are aware of the situation. To check this, the government is considering a scheme under which it will foot a part of the salary of women employees on maternity leave. This will cover women employees across sectors and levels, except Aasha and Aanganwadi workers. This should arrest the fall in women employment that was noticed in the last few quarters.Recently, there was a mega protest by workers at Jantar Mantar demanding better wages. There are a slew of measures that the government has announced under the PM’s initiatives such as a social security scheme named the Atal Bimit Vyakti Kalyan Yojna. Some 3.2 crore insured persons will benefit from this newly launched scheme of ESIC that will deposit cash directly into the beneficiary’s bank account in case of unemployment. This cash benefit given to the unemployed will be 25% of his/her average earning of the last 90 days. There are some 40 crore workers in the unorganised sector. The Pradhan Mantri Jeewan Jyoti Beema Yojna and the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Beema Yojna are totally free for unorganised workers. The honorarium of 14 lakh Aanganwadi workers have been increased from Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,500 a month and that of Aanganwadi helpers from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,250 a month. The incentive of Aasha workers too has been doubled. Chartered Accountant For consultng. Contact Us: http://bit.ly/mumbai-ca

Are You Addicted to Your Smartphone? Dr. Mercola By Dr. Mercola You’ve seen it many times: A family taking their seats in a restaurant, then one by one pulling out their individual cellphones to examine until the food comes, after which they check their phones repeatedly as they’re eating. Perhaps you’ve noticed people walking on busy streets, riding bicycles, driving cars or standing on a commuter train, scrolling their phones, paying little attention to their surroundings. Toddlers, too, are given their own little digital devices, to which their eyes remain glued as if they’re mesmerized instead of taking in the world around them and engaging with real people and real situations that help them grow socially and emotionally. Most people in the real world have connected to technology, only vaguely aware that in the process there’s the danger that unless they remain diligent, they’ll disconnect to some degree from what’s real and really important. According to Nancy Colier, author of “The Power of Off,” in The New York Times, “The only difference between digital addiction and other addictions is that this is a socially condoned behavior.” The New York Times observes: “The near-universal access to digital technology, starting at ever younger ages, is transforming modern society in ways that can have negative effects on physical and mental health, neurological development and personal relationships, not to mention safety on our roads and sidewalks.”1 Statistics Regarding Cellphone Use There’s nothing like a good set of statistics to take a vague notion and attach the reality of numbers to it. In regard to cellphone use (or abuse) here are a few that may surprise you: • Most people now check their smartphones 150 times a day, or every six minutes.2 Nearly 80 percent of teens check their phones hourly; 72 percent feel the urgent to respond immediately.3 • Cellphone users between 18 and 24 years exchange an average of 109.5 text messages per day, or 3,200 per month.4 • Forty-six percent of smartphone users say they “couldn’t live without” it. Some say they’d give up sex first.5 • More than 1,000 pedestrians visited emergency rooms in 2008 following injuries while using a cellphone to talk or text, and since 2006, that number had doubled for the previous two years, an Ohio State University study showed.6,7 In 2010, pedestrians injured while using cell phones accounted for 1,500 emergency room visits.8 • Of the 83 percent of adults in the U.S. who own cellphones, about 73 percent of them send text messages; about 31 percent of that number prefers texting to actually talking on the phone.9 One author offered a reminder that every time people look down at their phones, they’re spending precious time giving attention to something that doesn’t really matter. It’s about as mindless as someone doing a crossword puzzle while their daughter is giving a commencement speech. The New York Times observed: “Moderation in our digital world should be the hallmark of a healthy relationship with technology. Too many of us have become slaves to the devices that were supposed to free us, giving us more time to experience life and the people we love. Instead, we’re constantly bombarded by bells, buzzers and chimes that alert us to messages we feel compelled to view and respond to immediately.”10 Now That We Have It, Who Wants to Live Without Technology? Over the last 40 years, give or take, the jobs of thousands of advertisers, journalists, secretaries, real estate brokers, students and arguably virtually every other profession has changed drastically with the great leap forward from typewriters to word processors. Smartphones in today’s world have much broader potential than just a way to get and take calls away from home. Connected as they are to the internet, they can tell you how to cure a cold, how to plant a tree, the meaning of the word “zydeco” and directions to Milwaukee. They can also trigger emergency medical and weather alerts. Whether you work at a desk, on an oil well drilling platform, on the deck of a shrimping boat or on a New York stage, phone technology has probably made your life easier and infinitely more entertaining. It’s disengaging from them, however, that’s proven to be the challenge, often with unforeseen drawbacks. In Business Insider,11 Dr. Dan Siegel, clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, disclosed that smartphone use before bed has detrimental effects on both your brain and your body, literally releasing toxins to your cells. Due to light exposure from screens (smartphone and otherwise), melatonin isn’t released as usual to help you get to sleep, so you might figure, “Oh, well, I’m awake anyway,” and turn to your phone again, worsening your sleep deprivation. Colier, also a licensed clinical social worker, notes: “Without open spaces and downtime, the nervous system never shuts down. It’s in constant fight-or-flight mode. We’re wired and tired all the time. Even computers reboot, but we’re not doing it. It’s connections to other human beings — real-life connections, not digital ones — that nourish us and make us feel like we count. Our presence, our full attention is the most important thing we can give each other. Digital communications don’t result in deeper connections, in feeling loved and supported.”12 Children and Technology: It’s Up to You to Manage It According to The Kaiser Foundation,13 two-thirds of parents had no rules about how much time their children spent with media, and the average 8- to 10-year-old spends nearly eight hours a day (teens up to 11 hours) with a variety of different media. While many lament the lack of exercise for themselves and their children, and worry that there’s “no time” to visit a (real) library, toss around a football in the park or enjoy a sunset, they still scroll their phones. Almost by default, some parents opt out of those things for their kids, as well, because staying on the phone is just too easy. PBS filmed a documentary, “Web Junkie,” covering the tragic toll “screen addiction” is taking on young people in China, so obsessed with video games they play dozens of hours at a time, often without eating, sleeping or even using the bathroom. Immersed in the cyber world, they begin seeing the real world as the one that’s counterfeit. Chinese doctors treating it like a clinical disorder usually recommend rehabilitation centers where the young people immersed in the cyber culture are sometimes kept for months with a complete disconnect from all media, The New York Times reported.14 While it may not have been given a clinical diagnosis, American teenagers and young adults are much more involved in games on their phones than experts think is healthy. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) wrote: “Children who overuse online media are at risk of problematic internet use, and heavy users of video games are at risk of internet gaming disorder.”15 Harried parents used to occupy their infants and toddlers with Sesame Street while they got ready for work. Today, just as many parents (or maybe more) hand their child a cellphone or tablet for their entertainment. They may not realize how harmful this might be for their children in the long run, as the skill to self-soothe. Further, every hour spent playing on or otherwise engaged on cellphones is an hour spent sitting indoors. Detox expert Holland Haiis, author of “Consciously Connecting: A Simple Process to Reconnect in a Disconnected World,” quoted by CNN, cautioned: "If your teens would prefer gaming indoors, alone, as opposed to going out to the movies, meeting friends for burgers or any of the other ways that teens build camaraderie, you may have a problem."16 Experts’ Phone Use Recommendations for Parents (and Their Children) The AAP has long stated that children should not be exposed to any electronic media before age 2. Why? Because “a child’s brain develops rapidly during these first years, and young children learn best by interacting with people, not screens.”17 They recently amended this to say that some high-quality media (such as educational TV) could provide educational value for children starting at 18 months, provided parents watch with their children to help them understand the content.18 Time further noted the AAP’s recommendation that older children and teenagers be restricted to one or two hours a day on entertainment media — and no more — preferably with high-quality content. More importantly, they recommended kids spend more free time playing outdoors, reading, working on hobbies and generally using their imaginations. The question begs to be asked: What is considered “high-quality” content? Maybe focusing on what it’s not is one way to find an answer to that. Kristina E. Hatch, in preparing her honors thesis at the University of Rhode Island, said she asked fourth-graders about their favorite video games.19 One kid said his favorite had “zombies in it, and you get to kill them with guns and there’s violence … I like blood and violence.”20 It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to discern that a steady diet of this type of “entertainment” might not be good for kids of any age. Heavy electronic media use can have a significant and negative effect on not only kids’ behavior, but school performance as well. Dimitri A. Christakis of the Seattle Children’s Research Institute asserts: “Those who watch a lot of simulated violence, common in many popular video games, can become immune to it, more inclined to act violently themselves and less likely to behave empathetically.”21 In the first place, parents are the ones who usually purchase the different media options for their kids (or should be) but, for whatever reason, the same parents may be reluctant to offer guidelines or restrictions of any kind, even to the point of allowing them to play in the car and during meals instead of engaging in conversation that leads to connection and relationship. Is It Possible to at Least Limit Your Cellphone Use? One woman who decided to give up owning a cellphone entirely told The Guardian that before that point, she’d lived in a world where “constant communication isn’t just a convenient accessory — it (was) a second skin.” Then: “I got a landline and I got more sleep. I look people in the eye. I eat food instead of photographing it and am not driving half a ton of metal into oncoming traffic while looking down at a tiny screen.”22 Haiis, the digital detox expert, says one way to resist spending more time than is useful is to try limiting posts to social media to two to three times a week. This not only forces you to give more thought to what you’re posting; you spend less time looking at what others post. Setting boundaries for yourself is key, Haiss maintains. When the urge comes to reach for your phone, for instance, go outside, take a walk or exercise — do something positive to distract yourself. "We have constant access to new information and this is alluring, intriguing and exciting, but without setting limits for yourself, it's a slippery slope … The dopamine in our brains is stimulated by the unpredictability that social media, emails and texting provide. It's a vicious cycle and in order to break that cycle, you need to find the same unpredictability and stimulation which is out there if you are exercising. You never know what's around the bend when out for a jog, bike ride or walk."23 It’s important to know when it’s time to put down your smartphone and connect with the living, breathing people in your life, some whom you know and some whom you don’t — yet — but whom you’d never meet if you didn’t look up. Colier offered a three-step plan24 to help wean yourself from phone dependence: Figure out how much time you realistically need on your phone for things like work, navigation or letting people know you’re OK, and how much you use it for pure entertainment and distraction. Rather than going off your phone cold turkey, determine times when you restrict your phone use and refuse to let it interrupt you, such as mealtime and spending time with family and friends. Determine what’s really important to you, what “nourishes” you, and dedicate more thought, time and energy to those things. In short, live more intentionally and consciously, not dictated by the ringtone of your phone.
