without any idea, an account of
The story of nitrocellulose is an account of what chemists have done without any idea of what they were going to do.       In 1845, Dr. Schoebein [sic], while puttering in his physiological laboratory in Berlin, was astounded one day, by the behaviour of cotton cellulose when mixed with nitric and sulfuric acids. He observed that this treated cotton burned with explosive violence without the formation of black smoke. This discovery was hailed with delight both by scientific and military experts who looked forward to its possible adoption for war purposes.

Undead Media
20th Oct.
Undead Media (2004) is a journal article published on Afterimage by Sven Lutticken.
This article states that those old media are becoming the phantom in new media instead of dead. And the digital media mimic those characteristics in old media.
Then the author gives examples of Laocoonism and Gesamtkunstwerk. I looked up these two big words. Laocoonism is art using only one medium which coined by  Clement Greenber. And “Gesamtkunstwerk is a work of art that makes use of all or many art forms or strives to do so.”  Sven called Gesamtkunstwerk as “A total work of art”. Cinema once is considered the true realization of Gesamtkunstwerk and Nazi and Soviet used it to reform society.
At the third part of the article, Sven goes into analysing of the commercial Gesamtkunstwerk in not only in one generic. He asserts that media is “layerings of conventions” like the installation art in museums is different from the mass media in the entertainment industry.
This article makes me think about the various media in my practice. I always focus more on the visual effect. But those excellent digital artworks always use a good combination of several media. Like sound and good interaction design.
