personality. hyuna was never interested in a medical career because she wanted to help people.  she was never interested in a medical career because of some grand desire to better the state of the world.  that is all very noble, very admirable, she thinks, but not at all practical, not at all her.  no, hyuna wanted to learn.  and, alright, maybe she wanted to feel powerful, too.  maybe she wanted to push boundaries, toe the line — leap so far past the line that, should she turn back to look for it, it wouldn’t be visible. it hardly matters now, anyways.  now she knows who she is, what she wants.  now she specializes in beauty, prioritizes aesthetics, and does not hesitate to satiate her desires.  now she invests in her knowledge of the human (and decidedly not-human) body.  her hunt for answers will never be over, she thinks (because how can it be when the questions you’re asking are about life, the universe, and everything), but, well, that’s what she has the rest of eternity for.

history. kim hyuna clawed her way through medical school with the ferocity of a girl in search of answers.  kim hyuna devoured her way through her lessons with the determination of a girl who wanted to see more.  and she knew, from such a young age, that there was more to be seen.  more than her quiet parents could show her, more than her strict school teachers were able to teach her, and certainly more than the men — the boys — of the world were willing to share with her.  all her life, those boys would tell her no (no, sugar, why don’t you go on and rest your head, rest your feet, rest your hands, this is a complex procedure), and each time she’d smile and say, oh, no, thank you sir, but i’m alright. so she bared her teeth through the snorting of the pigs who thought they knew better and remembered that she was reaching from the shoulders of the greats; women like elizabeth blackwell, mary edwards walker, and esther park, who pioneered a new era of medicine, just for her.  just for her to explore, to learn, to discover.  hyuna wanted to know it all, and she still does. the answer to the very nature of life — and then, later, the answer to the very nature of her death, and her un-death. she cried when she was accepted for an internship, the kind of ugly sobbing that she would never admit to but could remember more vividly than any other moment from those very early years.  it was happiness, of course, because when the whole world tried to tell her no, that was the only yes that mattered.  a miracle stamped onto thick parchment, smelling freshly of ink and industry.  and it was happiness that got her through that year as an intern, and then her years as a resident, even when her contemporaries faded under the pressure, cracked under the stress.  they worked her just as hard as her male coworkers, and still she stood tall. weary, aching, exhausted, but grinning. oh, she used to laugh, fingers sore from handling iv’s, catheters, sutures, feet sore from standing for hours upon hours upon hours, this is going to kill me. and then, well. it did. she knew better, of course — of course she knew better, she’s a doctor for god’s sake, she knows best.  and, besides, it was just a cold, something she could ignore, because she couldn’t afford to miss work.  and then, oh, maybe it really is the flu? but still something she could ignore, because she couldn’t afford to show weakness. so she let it slide, tried to hydrate it away, even as patients died to influenza nearly every day, even as she got progressively worse.  but she’s a doctor, dammit, she knows how to handle this sort of thing. hyuna was admitted as a patient in her very own hospital when she collapsed during her shift.  her fellow doctors, her teachers, diagnosed her with a disease she already knew she had, and gave her a treatment plan she already knew she had to follow. they did not tell her that her influenza would turn into pneumonia.  they did not tell her that she would be coughing up pus, yellow and green and white, and shaking so badly that she could no longer hold a glass of water to her lips.  they did not tell her that one day, one of those doctors she’d learned under would kneel at her bedside and hold her hand. “you have so much more to learn,” he’d said to her. “when you awaken, i will teach you,” he’d said. and when she awakened, he taught her.  the answers she’d been hunting for were there, there in the palms of his hands and he was giving them to her.  with new answers came new questions, a new frontier of medicine, the likes of which elizabeth blackwell, mary edwards walker, and esther park could never have imagined.  the gift he’d given her was time, and she took that time by the horns, used it to explore more, learn more, discover more. took that time by the horns and watched as the men of the world fell around her, and she rose up in their place.
