Review:

A sweet and anxious werewolf looking for his soulmate finds his hands full when he drunkenly bids on a rock that was said to contain a vampire succubus girlfriend in it actually comes true and now the very sexy and terrifying vampire succubus is living with him. Ben Rosewood is a werewolf who is happy with his life, from his thriving plant emporium to his anxiety disorder... the only thing is he wishes he wasn't single. After attending his best friend's wedding and going home and drunkenly bidding on and winning a supposedly-possessed crystal on Ebay that contains a vampire succubus in it. Yet to his surprise it arrives and out comes Elenore Bettencourt-Deverux, a deadly, gorgeous vampire succubus who is determined to kill the witch who stuck her in the crystal and forced her to obey any order from the possessor of the rock. Elenore would rather claw out Ben's heart and eat it if she could than take an order from her new prison warden... except Ben is genuinely confused and shocked to find Elenore in his life. Ben's sweet and caring nature might finally crack Elenore's walls, that is if she can seduce him into letting her into his own heart. Elenore wants revenge but after being trapped in the crystal for so long she is definitely out of touch with the current world. Ben is determined to help free Elenore from her spell while dealing with his own crush on her and his werewolf shifting that he can't stand... oh and also working on helping his sister run for mayor. Two people who are so used to doing things for others finally find themselves opening their hearts up to the one person who could understand them and be the perfect match for them... if only they could break Elenore's curse! This was such a cute read and addition to the series. I loved this couple and just how perfectly matched they were to each other. Elenore and Ben are two sides of the same coin, Elenore is forced to do what people want and Ben runs himself ragged trying to do everything for everyone else, yet when they are together they finally have someone who will take care of them and prioritize their needs. It was a really cute read and I have loved reading this series so much. I hope there are more books set in this universe and series and I will absolutely be reading and recommending them!!

In a way each season features a character in more depth than they have been in others

Spoilers for nearly every episode of wwdits so far under the cut

Let me explain

Season 1 introduced everyone but the plotline mostly followed Nadja's affair with the human Gregor, she was coordinating the orgy, she hates werewolves, she hates Laszlo's hat, and she turned Jenna then had an episode half dedicated to her teaching Jenna how to be a good vampire

Season 2 followed Laszlo as the main character, he got their familiars killed off, he discovered the family had a ghost problem, he gave Sean bran scramblies (it wasn't Nandor, Laszlo said "forget everything" and that's what fucked it up), Laszlo became Jackie Daytona for a full episode, Laszlo wrote songs with his wife because his original melodies were being plagiarised, and Laszlo fucked a witch and she returned to steal his semen (he was the first to be abducted)

Season 3 is less obvious in some episodes like The Siren, but I believe the focus is Nandor since he was trying to seduce someone by using the cloak of duplication (even though other characters are in this episode they are all played by him), he attempted to marry a werewolf and was rejected heavily, he and Nadja take over the vampiric council, he forgets to feed the sire then has to track it down to appease vampire kind, he rebukes his vampirism and joins the wellness centre, he is locked up in a cell until he decides to go into a super slumber then when he is woken up too early he basically confirms Colin's death, and he decides to go on an around the world adventure for a year and plans to make Guillermo a vampire on said trip

Season 4 is distinctively about The Guide and Nadja, for the purpose of this we're gonna overlook Nadja (sorry my girl). The Guide has been waiting for the vampires to return for a year because her life revolves around them, The Guide hates change so she receives counselling from Laszlo and we are given her very sexual backstory, we learn she has OCD and an overwhelming crush on Guillermo because of his lineage, we see her working alongside Nadja trying to get new acts for the nightclub and coordinating the wraiths, we see her longing to be included in the night market when she is gifted a box which turns out to be a bribe for the wraiths, we find out she falls in and out of love very quickly in The Wedding and also get the whole makeover sequence which is just <3, we see her at Girls Night in the pine barrens (this episode is less Guide-centric but you can't deny she's in this season a lot more than previous), I can't remember when but she has the "no close female friends" episode with Nadja and we can all empathise or at least sympathise with her character, she helps Nadja in her search for an act for the nightclub and is dedicated to her work right until the end

Season 5 is very much about Guillermo and his new found vampirism, in the mall we see him getting abilities such as better eyesight and the vampires invite him to dinner to try and cheer him up, the whole of dinner he is the main focus of conversation specifically how bad of a vampire he would be, in pride parade he helps plan the pride event and the viewer feels his horror towards the stereotyping throughout the episode, he also is the reason why Nandor goes to space in this episode, he goes to tell his family he is a vampire in local news but keeps being distracted by the vampires, although he doesn't directly interfere with their news problem he commentates on it then basically has to say goodbye to his van helsing familia, he is experimented on by Laszlo which leads to Nadja taking him to urgent care where she discovers he is a vampire and he gives his opinions on the group while doped up, in hybrid creatures he becomes responsible for animals that look like him and Laszlo's experiments continue, in the roast the baron finds out Guillermo burned his in the first place and the episode follows him being chased and almost killed numerous times, at Morrigan Manor he is the only one who The Guide doesn't want to torture and she accidentally reveals his vampire identity, in exit interview he is living with Derek and keeps being visited by the vampires, he eventually has to make up with Nandor and a whole ceremony takes place to turn him back into a human

Season 6 is focused on Colin (I was going to say season 4 but that wouldn't be fair to the guide, technically he has 2 seasons though). This is the least apparent because of the writing but his main themes are raising The Monster and trying to give him a less controlling childhood than he had, he picks out the monsters head using Uber and dances to Latin music with it, he joins Nandor's army while also working from the inside to overthrow Nandor and make him see sense, he sees Laszlo's father as a parental role completely bypassing that Laszlo is his father, he visits an old friend who turns out to want to fuck him and we learn he is less perverted than the other vampires, he gets the first vampire kiss in the whole program, he has many awkward moments in come out and play with various drinks and delaying the groups progress (he is the funniest character in this episode at moments and it really shows), in The Promotion he is named as one of The Monster's dads and The Monster basically takes his last name because he is just wonderful wonderful, I'd like to pretend the finale doesn't exist but in an alternate ending he had 2 babies with Nadja and in the other he had a really dramatic sequence with The Guide where I'm guessing the idea is he was behind everything and the only reason people can't see it is because he was a "boring" character

If I've missed any moments from these specific seasons please fill me in, I had to be careful with season 4 because I've read so much fanfiction I can't remember what's canon for the guide and what isn't (i think I managed to keep fanon away from this but if not... Oops. Live with it)

I'm aware characters cross over in each season (season 1 - Nadja, Laszlo, Jenna and Gregor but they all belong to Nadja in a way) (season 2 - Laszlo, Nadja and Colin in a way) (season 3 - Nandor, Guillermo and towards the end Colin) (season 4 - Nadja, The Guide, baby Colin, Laszlo but they all tie into the nightclub and also I HC Nadja The Guide and Laszlo as a polycule so it's whatever) (season 5 - Guillermo, Nadja - particularly her Antipaxon heritage - and The Guide - her tricky little schemes to make friends such as Morrigan Manor and the hex) (Season 6 - Colin, The Monster, Laszlo as a mad scientist but again this 3 come as a package deal)

This is simply something I noticed earlier today while rewatching season 3 and thinking "hey, Nandors in this a lot more than usual. What is happening?"

I'm also aware gizmo is the main character in every season but fuck it we ball

A lot of the books I got rid of in the older tabs were contemporary genre, and there's not a whole lot of contemporary books I like. At least as a whole. There are exceptions but mainly, I find the genre boring. I feel like if it's contemporary, it has to be something really gripping or deranged for me to stay entertained. Murder mysteries and thrillers that are particularly messed up (I loved Butcher & Blackbird), Dark Romance (Adored Haunting Adeline and everything else I've read so far from H.D. Carlton.)

(Also just side note, a lot of the older books listed in my list reminded me of bi erasure and how its alive and well. Bi characters are always listed as lesbian. It's so stupid. Anyway, rant over.)

Most Read Trope: Grumpy Vs. Sunshine

Favorite Books:

Seven Year Slip By Ashley Poston: A wonderful romp with a magical apartment, a main character who feels lost and a love interest who can COOK! This was the first book that I'd ever read by Ashley Poston and it is my favorite one of hers. The idea was interesting and the main character's growth from beginning to end was lovely. Not to mention the main character loves watercolor painting and I do too 🤗

Lost And Lassoed By Lyla Sage: An enemies to lovers/ grumpy vs sunshine between a woman who loves fashion and feels like everyone else is moving on and grumpy older single dad cowboy who loves and cares about his daughter and his family.- I'm also not going to lie, Lyla Sage writes a whole series in this "universe" and this is her third book. I have been WAITING for her to write this couple since the first book. It was worth the wait. Plus grumpy vs. sunshine has me in a chokehold...

The Paradise Problem By Christina Lauren: A fake dating (fake married) romance where the main character is whisked away to paradise to a destination wedding only to find out that her fake husband's family isn't as welcoming as they seem. This was the first book I've ever read from Christina Lauren (it's a two author team!) and I loved it! I'm hoping to read more for them this year.

Bride By Ali Hazelwood: A vampire and an alpha werewolf are forced to marry for an alliance, but it turns out that it's not as bad as they think. This one was really good. I've read books by her in the past, but this one is my favorite. This one reminded me of all the paranormal romances I read when I was a teenager and it was nostalgic in the best way!

Favorite Re-read:

The Outsiders By S.E Hinton: Told by a 14 year old boy living in 1965 from a poor family who experiences the tension between the Greasers and the Socs in his hometown. I read this book at least once a year and I am still on the look out for a 1965 love story between a soc and a greaser that's a book. 😊

Favorite Emily Henry Book:

Beach Read: A lovely enemies to lovers and of course grumpy vs. sunshine between two writers who challenge each other to write a book outside of their genre over a summer and who promise not to fall in love with one another. I really love this one, because it's a little abnormal. Not abnormal, as in weird, but abnormal in the way that Emily Henry fits little pieces into this story that make it more than just an uplifting rom-com. It's real and sometimes a little raw, but it's wonderful. All of her books are wonderful!

Book Written With the Prettiest Style:

The Secret History By Donna Tartt: A loss of innocence and a questioning of what is morality between a group of college students at a New England College. Alright I read this one for the dark academia vibes and it was written well. The style that Tartt writes in is hypnotic and pulls you in. I will say that this book was sad- but it was written well so I can't be mad lol. And also that I knew it was going to be sad from the get go 😂. I don't know how many of y'all have read "Paul's Case" By Willa Cather, but she's one of my favorite writers and this book reminded me of that story.

“I always like to think there’s a book out there for everyone, and as long as people are mindful of others when voicing their opinions, no harm no foul!” Phoebe had experienced first-hand people’s ‘honest opinions’ about the things that she held dear to her. Mainly people trying to stand out and be ‘different’ but, truly, in her experience, being different or other tended to mean not being a dick about what people liked. “Comfort and fantasy, let me see.” She glanced at the shelf, seeing what came calling to her.

“In terms of one offs, we have this,” She pulled out A Werewolf's Guide to Seducing a Vampire. “A romcom with a supernatural twist, and very enjoyable if you’re a sucker for enemies to lovers and forced teamwork.” Next, Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries. “This is a whimsical fantasy with a more gentle romance, and the main character is a faerie scholar, which was like, my dream job as a kid! And circling back to the Gilmore Girls vibes with a hint of Practical Magic,” She held up The Ex Hex, “It’s like if you combined the two, about a witch who cursed her ex-boyfriend and realised she may have messed up when he returns to town. Very relatable.” Well, was for about five minutes, glad her negativity regarding Foster had turned on its head. “And similar vibes, there’s Rewitched. I really recommend it, especially if you’re entering a new age in your life. The main character — witch Belle — has her 30th birthday and it brings about her magic being tested. I just found it very relatable as someone who just turned 30 too.” 

The last book she picked up to show Elspeth from the shelf, Januaries, she traced the winter aesthetic cover lovingly. “These are a collection of short stories and poetry, if you want a taste of different tales. A mix of paranormal, some set in the past, some with modern twists. Perfect if you want to truly lose yourself in a whole realm of worlds. And of course,” She gestured to the shelf, “We have multiple series, more high fantasy stuff, more serious themes. Whatever you need!” She grinned. “I’m still waiting for someone to invent waterproof paper, because I’ve learned the hard way about reading in the tub, but that’s like the perfect evening to me.”

elspeth loved the spooky season more than most. her home was decorated year-round with little ghosts — candle holders and coffee jars, oven gloves printed with cute ghoulies — and she had been planning her costume for weeks, but that didn’t mean she wanted to read about the very real horrors that took up her long days at work. evenings were meant for relaxation, rich cocoa and a good chick flick. a soft smile lifted the corners of their lips, and they watched as phoebe moved away from the counter and started circling the various displays. “i actually haven’t, but that sounds so cozy. i’ve heard about that hockey player one. there are a lot of differing opinions but, hey, i’ll never know whether it’s any good without reading it myself!” maybe it would be their new favorite genre, or at the very least they could tick another title off of their ever-growing list. “there’s a time and a place for horror, absolutely, but with my life it’s the last thing i need. the more comforting the better. what sort of fantasy things do you have in mind?”

A GrimDark AU

This came from me listening to Gothic Victorian playlists on YouTube and trying a challenge run of only being able to selling antiques or helping people. Then from my skull leaked this. I don’t know where it came from but I like it.    

It’s a late autumn’s night. The night comes with many risks and dangers, and you're out tracking them down now. As you round a corner, a vampire is feasting on a person when they notice you and your hunter scent. 'How exciting it is that you have monster blood on you and how he can’t wait to taste it'. You deal with them by fighting, tricking, or seducing them, draining them of their energy. 

When the job is done and you go to the small window lit with a lantern, there your money is waiting, in the hands of the booth-keeper. They hand you the money for the job, and Bailey is there. They take most of the payment and say you have more due in six more days. They’re done taking care of you. 

You are a Hunter. Hunters are sought after for their strange abilities: they can take much more damage than a normal person, provide extremely strong offspring, are stronger, and more dexterous. Fighting machines against the creatures of the night. and It's time to start earning money and pay off your debt. You’re kicked out of your old home and forced to stay at the inn. In six days, you need to make money to pay the innkeeper for the week, food, and supplies to make more money.

Have combats and do small quests around town to make money, Face off against fight , werewolves, vampires, nobles, ghosts, other monsters, and even the people your trying to protect. Survive the night and reclaim the fame that was stolen from you.    

PC: Descendant of late retired hunters, with a ruined name after they couldn’t pay back Bailey. Defamed and left alone to pay back your family debt and make a name for yourself. Not only do you need to save people by making money, but you also need to avoid pissing off the ones in power or else you are going to have to find yourself useful or they can find use in ways much less savory than serving the people.

Eden: Monster Hunter Hermit (Had tragedy strike them when they were young, monsters attacked them and got scarred. The silver bullet-fed flintlock rifle is a family heirloom. Openly armed at all times (seen as impolite in some circles)) 

Black Wolf: Werewolf Alpha (The largest and most powerful werewolf in the area. He runs a massive clan deep in the woods outside of town. (Eden fights them off every night so long as he’s paid; if not, he lets the werewolves attack the town every blood moon.)

Kylar: Peasant Vampire (Dirty, a poor commoner, suddenly turned into a vampire, whose sire was nowhere to be found. They the ability to turn into cats, bats, and rats. Unlike stronger, elder vampires, who can turn into large predators. Originally, it may have been thought to be drunk by PC and was saved from burning in the sunlight after a rough fight.) (Pretends to be a doll merchant; turns out he’s great at crafting, but he has a collection of you)

Sydney: The Priest or Deceiver (starts as a simple temple priest with good medical knowledge. But he may learn about a dark demonic heritage they has as they experience the sins of this world. They can even awaken to his demonic blood if you guide him. Or they could become the grand leader of the church. they are the one to fit you with your chastity belt. They know how monsters and others can get with hunters.  

Whitney: Noble or Knight? (is a cruel lord but serves under the rule of someone much darker, and unknown, but the local police don’t do anything to stop him. If you oppose them too much, they might come to you beaten and battered, followed by others dressed like them, demanding you hand Whintey over. Let them take Whintey, and they will be gone forever. Save Whitney, and they won’t be the same Whitney. They will be much quieter and more focused on doing their job.)

Robin: Flower seller. (Is a simple merchant, stuck in town by old family debt, lives in the tenement of the debt collector or loan shark. He’s capable but not as capable as a hunter. 

Bailey: Said Loan Shark or Debt collector/ innkeeper (Helps in running the town's secret underbelly. Deals in intimidation and keeping the public’s head down, pay for your room here. Or you have a family debt just as Robin does.)

Harper: The doctor/ alchemist (the town's beloved doctor) works to make medical supplies and potions. Has a special interest in you since they know of your hunter origin. Often might pay you to let them run experiments on you. See how long you can endure certain stimuli, or see how your body can make stronger offspring, having you harbor parasites, or having eggs incubated and hatched from you.  

Alex: farmer and weapons smith (Runs a farm outside of town but the father was a retired weapons smith, showed Alex a few of the basics and Alex picked it up, a natural at making some nasty blades, bows, flintlocks, or staffs. Likes to study weapons.
