Prompt List Here!
Luffy stared. Everything felt… Wrong. Like something in the universe had twisted and flexed and broke.
That was a Marine ship.
With a pirate flag.
It wasn’t Drake’s – the colors were wrong, and they’d left him and his crew behind the island after Wano.
There was a deep, unabating hurt that came from the ship, and Luffy couldn’t tell if it was the ship or her passengers. He could barely tear his eyes from the person standing on her prow.
The Sunny passed close by, quietly, as if she could hear the pain radiating from the other ship. His crew had gone silent as well, hovering at battle stations in case they needed to fight.
Luffy recognized the person standing on the prow, recognized the shock of pink hair.
He reached out with his haki, just to see, and –
They looked up.
Brown eyes met magenta and Luffy knew who that was.
“Coby?!” he near shouted.
“Luffy?” His name was soft, barely loud enough for Luffy to hear. Luffy’d heard it anyway.
Then he was across the distance between the two ships, tackling bodily into Coby, and the only thing that was saving them from landing in the water of the Line was Coby’s armored grip on the rope connecting between the prow and the mizzenmast.
Coby still slipped, still staggered – Luffy was short but he was dense, and he was octopus-wrapped around Coby.
Something had happened.
Something bad had happened.
Pain radiated out from Coby, from his ship, from his crew.
“You promised,” Luffy whispered.
“I’m sorry.”
“You promised me you’d – you promised,” Luffy repeated.
“I know.” There was a warble in Coby’s voice. “I know.”
Shouting came from the Sunny, but Luffy ignored it. It wasn’t as important right this second. Not when the pain of the ship and her crew was so sharp.
“What happened?” Luffy demanded. He needed to know.
Tears seemed to well up sharply in Coby’s eyes before he blinked them away and swallowed. “I can’t. Can’t talk about it,” he whispered.
Luffy pulled back a little, took in the former (?!) marine.
Hurt. Exhausted.
Betrayed.
“What happened?” Luffy said quietly. He ran his hand through Coby’s hair, catching on a couple of knots.
Coby cracked, his head hitting Luffy’s shoulder. “We got betrayed. Our division near wiped out. I don’t – don’t want to talk about it.”
That was bad, but it did explain things. Some things, anyway.
“What about –”
Coby cut Luffy off with a shake of his head. “Can’t be an admiral if I’m not a marine.” Then he tensed, and Luffy curled a little tighter.
Luffy’s shoulder was wet, but it didn’t matter.
“Sail alongside us,” Luffy said. “For a while.” It was as much of an offer as he could make, even if he couldn’t make this whole situation right again.
Coby nodded. He snuffled loudly against Luffy’s shoulder.
Time seemed to move again, and Luffy became aware that the former (former!) Marines on the deck of the ship were staring at him. A thread of apprehension filled the air, mingling with the hurt and betrayal.
Someone – many someones, probably – was going to get his fist to their face for this.
