Developmental psychology scholar read Cozy Classics' Moby-Dick! Here are the thougts.
For those who haven't heard of the Cozy Classics, they are a series of board book adaptions of great classics such as Oliver Twist, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and Jane Eyre, created by Jack and Holman Wang and intended for young children. What makes these books stand out, however, is that they come with a most delightful needle felted twist!
Each book contains 12 illustrations, consisting of photographs depicting scenes from the original story and featuring needle felted characters and props.
In addition to this, 12 words related to the story are printed in-between the illustrations; "sailor", "leg", "boat", "find"...
...et cetera. Guess Moby-Dick gets a bonus word though, since "Pequod" is ever so neatly embroidered on the ship's fluffy name plate.
I have to say that this whole concept is nothing short of genius. Not only are the little ones presented with the classics fitting their own level of perception, but the materials shown in the pictures are all familiar ones to them sensory-wise, thus much more relatable than conventional illustrations.
As for the words, they are fitting 1-2 syllable ones, but their meaning - at least in this case - are somewhat unsual. I'm telling you, one doesn't find educational toddler literature containing "smash", "sink", and "mad" together all that often. The choice of words in combination with the pictures also works in an almost insidious fashion in that they will now be forever planted in the lil' one's brain and for the rest of their life they will recognize that peg legged dude with anger issues.
The book manages to capture the essence of the original quite well and what truly surprised me was how the creators did not hold back on the dark stuff. Ahab looks like something that definately will come crawling out from under your bed at night for a maniacal stabbing session, Moby Dick turns the Pequod to splinters, and a heart broken Ishmael floats around on a coffin. Even the color scheme is moody and ominous. We approve! 👍
Even if you don't have a child nearby to brain wash, I highly recommend you check this book out - it's up for a free read on archive.org - for the sake of admiring the pieces of downright wool art.
So, there's the Cozy Classics Moby-Dick for ya. Now I have to go ponder whether I should add a request for a needle felted coffin in my death plan.

May 2023 Books
The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier
I really liked this one! The style felt classic, the atmosphere was intriguing and eerie, and the plot sucked me in.
Moongarden by Michelle A. Barry (reread)
This one is kind of sort of a sci-fi retelling of The Secret Garden, and while I like the concept, I didn't love it the first time I read it. The reread helped me pinpoint why: the arcs and themes of the original were absent. There's a prickly heroine and a secret garden (of sorts), but the emphasis of the narrative is not on healing from emotional neglect, or even healing in general. It's a fairly standard tale of a girl who is frustrated by having to live up to her parents' lofty expectations and who comes to realize what her true talents are, along with some dystopian sci-fi conflict. Despite the interesting concept of the world, it feels like a bland version of a tale that's been told many times.
The Well-Wishers by Edward Eager
Light and fun in the typical Eager style.
Mr. and Mrs. Bunny--Detectives Extraordinaire! by Polly Horvath (reread)
My youngest sister read this one years ago and some of its details ended up in our bank of references (smartcars driven by rabbits in platform shoes! The Marmot ordered the most expensive thing on the menu! it makes sense in context). The reread reestablished that it is indeed hilarious, albeit odd.
Anyone but Ivy Pocket by Caleb Krisp
Goodness knows I love insufferable literary children. But I couldn't stand rude, brazen, self-centered, grandiose Ivy. I could understand where her behavior comes from, but that didn't make it any less painful to read about. The fact that she is a maid and acts like that made the behavior difficult to swallow; although the story didn't seem set in any particular era, it seems intended to be vaguely old-timey, and in those days a smart mouth from the domestic staff would never have been tolerated. But what made her particularly difficult to like was that she is utterly incapable of character growth, the thing that makes insufferable literary children endearing rather than loathsome. Someone like that could function as a minor character, but in a protagonist that just doesn't work.
Going Postal by Terry Pratchett
My first foray into this series! I enjoyed it, although I was frequently confused. Not sure that I'm ready to return to the series soon, but this one was indeed amusing.
Home by Sarah Prineas
...I had to look up this title in Goodreads to recall what it was.
The Mysterious Case of the Allbright Academy by Diane Stanley (reread)
I read this as a teenager and recently picked it up at a library booksale out of nostalgia. It may not be Great Literature, but I still found it entertaining.
Marianne Dreams by Catherine Storr (reread)
I had a hankering for this book and others like it again.
Noel Streatfeild's Holiday Stories by Noel Streatfeild
The highlight of this one was the short story that included Harriet and Lalla from Skating Shoes / White Boots, whom it was a pleasure to encounter again.
The Hollow Boy by Jonathan Stroud
The second book in this series dragged for me, but this one restored the breezy pace. The characters and prose continue to be delightful.
Mystery of the Hidden Hand by Phyllis A. Whitney
Not one of her stronger mysteries. I had to look this one up to remember it.
Complete Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde by Oscar Wilde
These vacillated between heartbreakingly beautiful and wow-I-am-not-on-board-with-this-philosophically.
Bellwether by Connie Willis
I loved this one more than I expected. It spoke to me. It's a brilliant examination of how our lives and decisions are influenced by inexplicable fads and what it takes to get out of that mindset and I know putting it like that doesn't do it justice but it's just really good. I even liked the romance. (And this has nothing to do with the story itself, but it's set in the Denver and Boulder areas and the protagonist goes to my old town to buy a McGuffin, and that makes me irrationally happy.)
I also read various Wonder Woman 1987 comics specifically dealing with Cassie in order to get a sense of her background. She's a supporting character and gets less development than she does in YJ 1998, I think. And she's the only child on that team who does not have a heartbreaking backstory. Good for her. Somebody in this group has to be kind of normal. Why not the girl who has superpowers because she talked the actual Zeus from Greek mythology into giving them to her.

The Magic Faraway Tree Movie: Rebecca Ferguson Joins Classic
Enid Blyton is getting the Hollywood treatment once again, and this time, her beloved children's classic The Magic Faraway Tree is about to be brought to life in a way that’ll have both nostalgia enthusiasts and newcomers intrigued. With the final casting announcement now out, one name that’s causing quite the buzz is Rebecca Ferguson. Known for her roles in Dune, Mission Impossible, and Silo, Ferguson is set to play Dame Snap, a character whose name might sound charming but whose demeanor is anything but. A Darkly Magical Tale The Magic Faraway Tree isn’t just another stroll through the enchanted forest—it’s a deep dive into the world of make-believe, where every tree branch hides a new world and each character is more whimsical than the last. However, don’t let the whimsicality fool you. With Ferguson’s casting, it’s clear that the filmmakers are leaning into the darker, more sinister side of Blyton’s creation. Dame Snap, the terrifying headmistress, is one of those characters that kept kids (and probably some parents) up at night. Ferguson’s portrayal is bound to add an edge that will make you question your childhood memories in the best way possible. Director Ben Gregor couldn’t be more excited about Ferguson joining the cast, describing her as “a towering screen presence, one of the finest actors of her generation.” And honestly, when you look at her filmography, it’s hard to disagree. Ferguson has played everything from a seductive spy in Mission Impossible to a powerful aristocrat in Dune, and now, she’s set to become one of Blyton’s most iconic villains. Imagine Dame Snap with a touch of Ferguson’s intense energy—sounds terrifyingly delightful, right? Star-Studded Ensemble But Ferguson isn’t the only big name attached to this project. Andrew Garfield, the versatile star who’s swung between indie hits and superhero blockbusters, is also on board. Whether he’s playing a soldier on the battlefield (Hacksaw Ridge) or a ticking time bomb of creativity (tick, tick... BOOM!), Garfield has proven that he can do it all. Now, he’s set to bring that same level of depth to The Magic Faraway Tree, a story that’s as much about the internal journey of its characters as it is about the external adventures. And let’s not forget Claire Foy. With her Golden Globe and Emmy-winning portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown, Foy has shown that she can handle complex characters with grace and nuance. In The Magic Faraway Tree, her role is still under wraps, but given the talent attached, you can bet it’ll be one to watch. Nostalgia Meets New Age For those who grew up with Enid Blyton, The Magic Faraway Tree is a nostalgic trip down memory lane. But this film isn’t just about recreating a beloved book; it’s about reimagining it for a new generation. With its blend of dark fantasy, adventure, and a hint of the eerie, the movie promises to be as enchanting as it is unsettling. And with Rebecca Ferguson leading the charge as Dame Snap, it’s safe to say this is one adaptation you won’t want to miss. Should You Watch It? If you’re a fan of fantasy films, classic children’s literature, or just great acting, The Magic Faraway Tree should be on your radar. With its stellar cast, experienced production team, and a story that has stood the test of time, this movie is poised to be a hit. And if you’ve ever wanted to revisit your childhood, but with a bit more edge, this is your chance. Read the full article

Table Accents Inspired by Books: Adding Literary Charm to Your Dining Space
In an age where digital distractions often dominate our lives, the timeless charm of books remains a source of solace and inspiration. For those who find joy in the written word, integrating book-inspired elements into home décor can offer a delightful way to celebrate literature while adding personality to your space. Among the most effective and stylish ways to achieve this is through Table Accents Inspired by Books. Here’s how you can infuse your dining area with the magic of books.
Literary Centerpieces
Transform your dining table into a literary masterpiece with book-themed centerpieces. A stack of vintage novels or classic hardcovers can serve as a base for a decorative arrangement. Place a vase of fresh flowers or a candle holder atop the stack to add a touch of elegance. For a modern twist, consider a sleek, minimalistic design with a single, striking book as the centerpiece. Choose a book with a visually appealing cover or a color that complements your table setting.
Book-Inspired Tableware
Elevate your table setting with book-themed tableware. Look for plates, glasses, and napkins adorned with literary quotes, illustrations, or motifs inspired by your favorite novels. There are countless options available, from plates that mimic the cover designs of classic books to napkins featuring famous literary quotes. For a more personalized touch, consider custom-made tableware that reflects the specific genres or authors you adore.
Literary Bookends
Bookends aren’t just for bookshelves—they can also be stylish table accents. Choose bookends with designs that resonate with your literary tastes. For instance, vintage metal bookends featuring literary motifs, such as quills or typewriters, can add a nostalgic touch to your dining table. Alternatively, opt for modern, abstract bookends that subtly hint at literary themes without overpowering the space.
Bookmark Place Cards
Place cards are a practical and elegant way to add a personal touch to your table setting. Why not use bookmarks as place cards? Choose bookmarks featuring quotes from beloved books or literary illustrations and write your guests’ names on them. Not only do they serve a functional purpose, but they also offer a unique, bookish twist that can spark conversation and delight your guests.
Themed Tablecloths and Runners
Enhance your dining table with tablecloths or runners inspired by your favorite books or literary genres. Look for fabric adorned with illustrations from classic novels or patterns that evoke the essence of a particular literary style. A table runner featuring an elegant, vintage book cover design can set a sophisticated tone for your dining experience, while a whimsical print inspired by children's literature can create a playful and inviting atmosphere.
Book-Inspired Napkin Rings
Napkin rings are an often-overlooked detail that can make a big impact. Choose rings that feature designs related to literature, such as miniature book charms, typewriter keys, or quills. Alternatively, create your own DIY napkin rings by attaching small, decorative book excerpts or quotes to simple rings. This personal touch adds a charming and memorable element to your table setting.
Literary Candles and Holders
Candles can create a warm and inviting ambiance, and Faux Books Decor for a Living Room can enhance this effect. Look for candles housed in containers that resemble classic book spines or holders shaped like famous literary symbols. Scented candles with names inspired by literature or book settings can also add a fragrant touch that evokes the atmosphere of your favorite stories.
By incorporating these book-inspired accents into your dining area, you can create a space that not only celebrates your love for literature but also offers a visually captivating and unique setting for your meals. Whether you’re hosting a literary-themed dinner party or simply enjoying a quiet meal at home, these accents will ensure that your dining table becomes a charming tribute to the world of books.

Love at First Book, by Jenn McKinlay
A warm, cozy hug of a romance, and a tribute to books, writers, and booklovers
Librarian Emily Allen arrives in Ireland to spend a year working as assistant to her favorite author, a YA novelist who hasn’t published a book in 10 years. Or rather, she’ll be spending her mornings as Siobhan Riordan’s assistant, and her afternoons working in the village bookstore owned by Siobhan and her son Kieran Murphy, a bookseller with romance-hero looks and a surly manner.
I loved a lot of things about this book. Em and Kier’s banter is great, especially because Kier brings out a feistiness in Em that she never knew she had. Em’s illness anxiety disorder is handled compassionately. Em herself is kind, likeable, enthusiastic, and good at solving problems. It’s a pleasure to watch her bloom and become more courageous and outspoken after spending much of her life trying to keep her (terrible) mother happy.
Kieran starts out as a fairly generic hero (in the handsome-but-grouchy vein), but as he opens up more, his character becomes a bit deeper and more complex, and thus more compelling. it’s easy to see why Em’s initial, physical attraction evolves into something more. Siobhan is a delight, and her acceptance and caring are healing for Em. And I loved seeing Em get the opportunity to work closely with her idol. I also enjoyed the bookstore staff, the village, and the Irish countryside, and wished we got more time with them.
Most of all, I loved how bookish this novel is. McKinlay describes the Last Chapter bookstore in loving detail. Em and Kier have an ongoing quotes competition; the books they quote range from children’s classics to adult literature. And Siobhan’s fictional Tig McMorrow series has much in common with the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson series. As a bonus, Em makes references to several romance novel tropes… and daydreams a few scenarios involving Kier.
I admit, there are a few things I wish Ms. McKinlay had done differently. The prose sometimes has more of the tone, flavor, and lightness of a cozy mystery, particularly at the beginning. Em narrates in the first person, which means we never experience Kier’s thoughts and feelings directly; I think I would have been even more invested in their relationship if I had seen it from both sides. Given the serious nature of one of the plot lines, I also would have appreciated deeper character and relationship development overall. Not that there was no depth of feeling! On the contrary, the book had me in tears at least twice.
The book takes place during late summer, fall, and winter, but it’s such a delightful wish-fulfillment romance, I highly recommend sticking it in your beach or vacation bag this summer!

SWEET LULLABY POEMS
Judy Mastrangelo’s enchanting and colorful paintings beautifully depict this collection of famous and well loved sleepy time poems, written by talented authors of the past. Several of these “Lullaby Poems” have familiar melodies which can be sung. You may also enjoy creating your own tunes for the lyrics.
The following are some of Judy’s favorite poems she has chosen to illustrate for this delightful anthology:“Rock~A~Bye Baby” and “Little Boy Blue” are two popular Mother Goose poems that are included. You will also find a well known American Lullaby, “All The Pretty Little Horses”, which has tender descriptions of beautiful dreamy horses.
In this book, you may recognize one of the most famous lullabies ever written: “Lullaby And Goodnight”, also known as “Brahm’s Lullaby”. The music and lyrics were written by Johannes Brahms, and Judy adapted the verse for his lovely cradle song. She also modified the words to another poem: “Angel Prayer”. You may remember the melody to this well known lullaby, which is from Hansel and Gretel: “When I lay me down to sleep, Fourteen Angels watch do keep….”
Of course her book wouldn’t be complete without including the beloved “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”, written by Jane Taylor. Judy has illustrated this entire poem, and interpreted it in a unique and enthralling way, by depicting a young girl’s dream. In this fanciful adventure, the little child enjoys enchantment in a magical starlit sky. When she flies “Up above the world so high”, she meets some lovable Fantasy Animals in adorable costumes, the whimsical Man In the Moon, and Little Twinkle Star. This poem, accompanied by Judy’s entrancing paintings, is a very uplifting experience.
Judy has also included one of her own original poems that she wrote and illustrated, entitled “Evening Dreams”. In it, she describes the wonderful visions of a lovely Fairy, sleeping on the Moon, surrounded by gentle Guardian Spirits.
Both Children and Adults of all ages will delight in reading this engaging selection of poetry, as well as looking at Judy’s enthralling, and detailed artwork, which illustrates it so well. It is beautifully put together, handsomely designed and delightful in every way. This book will make a fine addition to the collections of those who love beautiful literature and painting. In her “Sweet Lullaby Poems”, Judy has created a charming and captivating book, which will always be cherished

INDIE 5:0 - 5Q'S WITH MARYEN CAIRNS
Introducing the fabulous singer-songwriter Maryen Cairns!
Maryen is based in Guernsey and is well known for her allegorical folk-pop style which has delighted fans around the world, as well as gaining critical acclaim.
Her music career spans the last three decades, and includes the release of seven solo albums under the mentorship and guidance of esteemed music producer Chris Kimsey (of Rolling Stone), as well as collaborations with Fish, the former lead singer of Marillion.
In August 2023, Maryen embarked on a transformative journey across the UK, reconnecting with her audience in a series of ten intimate performances. These shows offered her fans to experience her music in a really personal way.
Her music initiative called "The Cairns Club" also provides another way for fans to engage with her music. More recently, Maryen collaborated with producer Chris Kimsey at Echotown Studios.
Over two days of live recording sessions, Maryen poured her heart and soul into nine carefully curated tracks, resulting in the creation of "One Woman Band, Live at Echotown Studios, Vol. 1", due to be released next month.
We caught up with Maryen to find out more about her passion for all things music, her inspirations, and what fans can look forward to next:
Your upcoming live album, "One Woman Band, Live at Echotown Studios, Vol 1," re-imagines your classic recordings in an intimate setting.
What inspired you to embark on this project, and what do you hope listeners will take away from it?
I’ve always believed that a song should be able to stand on it’s own, just a voice singing by itself - and this was the inspiration behind the Cairns Club Livestreams, the resulting ANEW tour, and the “One Woman Band, Live at Echotown Studios” sessions.
My mission was to give the audience each song in a very simple way, but to still have sonic intrigue, and my fascination with percussion is a big part of this journey… “Give To The Chase” features an entirely percussive backdrop to the voice, whilst fingerpicked or plectrum driven acoustic guitar, or piano, come to the fore on other tracks… occasionally all at once. I hope that listeners can enjoy their immersion into the sound, knowing that it exists exactly like this for just that moment… I never play a song exactly the same twice.
Throughout your career, you've demonstrated a talent for storytelling through your music.
Can you share a bit about your creative process when crafting narratives and characters within your songs? Do you take inspiration from personal experiences mainly, literature, or other sources?
Inspiration hits me from different sources, and historic stories, real stories, are definitely a big one for me - I’ve discovered reality is often way stranger than fiction. I’m intrigued with people and why they do what they do and their relationships with each other.
Of course my own experiences and life lived come into play, and this has become deeper over time… growing up myself, entering the world of birth and motherhood, living with babies and toddlers all the way through the teens and segueing into adulthood, watching ones’ children having their own lives… the whole of these human experiences come out through my art.
I’m inspired by nature and the elemental forces - and I’m inspired by bizarre possibilities, of fantasy & science fiction… I love to read fiction and almost always have a book I’m in the middle of.
If I’m writing about a real historical person or event, I research extensively and I tend to write many more words than my final lyrics will have… and then the melody and chords will come from those words. The hardest thing writing about history is settling on the version of the truth… because most of the time there are differing accounts, and at some point I have to decide which version of the story to go with… this is harder than when I’m writing my own fictional story!
From your early days using home studio recording equipment to working with acclaimed producers like Chris Kimsey, you have experienced various aspects of the music industry.
How have these experiences shaped your approach to production, and what advice would you give to emerging artists looking to hone their own sound?
Overall my approach to production comes down to keeping complete control, but knowing when to hand over the reins to someone whom I trust.
Hence, in general I do all my own recording at home in my little studio and I spend a lot of time shaping a track… but when I feel more is needed then I reach out.
With my recent focus on capturing what I was doing live, though, I completely changed my approach… instead I went into the very high-end quality Echotown Studios and was purely the performing artist playing the songs to the small audience. In fact, I went so far as refusing to even listen back to the tracks, because I didn’t want to get distracted from my performance. This resulted in 30 tracks being recorded in 2 days, which were mixed later in Chris Kimsey’s own home studio.
My advice is to take a good look at what your main skills are, and make sure you have autonomy over your own work.
Most artists are best learning how to record themselves: set up as good a studio as you can to work in by yourself - and believe me, a lot can be done with a very simple set up! - and spend as much time in it as possible experimenting with songs and sound.
However, if performing is your highest skill then concentrate on that, engaging other music professionals to record your performances.
In all cases, do your research to find a producer or mixing engineer who has worked with artists you like. Don’t be afraid to approach them… everyone likes to discover new amazing artists, and maybe you’ll meet someone great who’s on your wavelength and helps you reach your full potential!
Your connection with your audience has deepened over the years, especially through initiatives like The Cairns Club and livestream concerts.
How do you cultivate this sense of intimacy and engagement in your performances, both in-person and online?
I used to be very shy with my listeners, but The Cairns Club has brought me into conversation with my audience, which has given me confidence and deepened my connection with them. This happened initially online, and now that I’m venturing off the island (I live in Guernsey) I’m finding myself enjoying continuing the conversations & songs in-person.
Looking forward to more shows in the UK in 2024 and hoping to venture further afield in 2025!
Throughout your career, you've explored a wide range of themes and topics in your music, from personal reflections to broader social issues.
Are there any particular subjects or messages that you find yourself increasingly drawn to convey in your songs as your career progresses.
I’m more and more drawn to writing about connections between us - past and future - and of nature, Mother Earth… and our connection, as human beings, as ethereal beings, with this amazing planet we have grown from.
… I also have a notebook filled with stories, amazing stories, that I need to tell…
