New Year's Kiss

After some failed attempts last Christmas, Rayman wishes to finally open up to Crash by making the start of the year something truly special for the two. Once again facing his greatest challenge yet...

“5…4…3…2…1…”

“HAPPY NEW YEAR!”

As the fireworks were released, and the sky was covered in a mesh of different hues and shapes, every creature in the glade cheerfully welcomed the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. Music began to play, people danced and jumped around with hope on their faces, holding each other close in a powerful embrace.

Rayman, standing at the back of the crowd, clapped along with his group of friends and family, smiling just like them. As soon as the fireworks were on, Rayman was ready to receive and deliver many hugs all around, but never one as crushingly loving as his best friend’s, Globox. Who he reciprocated to the best of his ability, once he recovered some sense in his body, giving him some back pats before he was put back down.

His big friend was quickly followed by his children, who jumped without hesitation to each get a chance at hugging their number one hero. Rayman stumbled upon the table behind him, desperately trying not to be dragged down by the army of kids, who could not hear their dear uncle Rayman asking them to slow down amongst their own giggles. “Now, now, children. Do be careful! We don’t want any accidents at the start of the year!”

Uglette, as kind as always, managed to help Rayman out of the grabby little hands of her children. Each of them finally offering their dear uncle a proper hug, sometimes along with a peck on one cheek, as they ran through the grass field and amongst the crowd, quickly followed after by their father.

Rayman laughed as he stood straight once again. “Phew! Thanks, Uglett— Woah!” Met with one huge, final kiss on his left cheek, as Uglette held his head in her hands, she released a hearty laugh. “Happy new year, Rayman!”

“Yeah, happy new year to you, too!”

Finally, the family went to celebrate with the rest of the people, and they left Rayman to be for a moment. He smiled, looking at everyone around him in a tender stare. All the people he’s known his entire life, who he has fought for and who had fought by his side, reunited right outside Betilla’s home. All celebrating in the same place.

However…There was a certain someone who had yet to make an appearance.

As he continued to look around, he noticed that between his people there were some distinguished fellows standing under a tree, chatting with the Globox family.

Standing out noticeably tall was Crunch, who was laying against the tree with a warm drink in his hand, wearing a long black parka and a ‘two color’ scarf. Right beside him, there was Coco, moving her hands up and down, left and right as she spoke. She was wearing an insulated down pink coat, along with a hat and a pair of mittens.

But no matter how much he squinted, or how long he stood on his tip toes, there was no sign of him… Was he still hiding?

“Abybay!”

A whoosh of wind approached the lil guy, before he could turn his head around, he was already being held up in the air into a deadly, motherly embrace.

“B-Betilla…!”

“Oh, sorry!” She giggled as she began fixing the thingamajig’s hair. “So! Are you having a good time?”

“Yeah, of course! I think everyone is.”

“True! But…”

Betilla locked her eyes on the crowd. Rayman stared at her, then to the crowd, and then back at her. He was met with a particular look in her eyes, directed at him.

“What’s wrong?”

“You look a bit upset.”

“Me? Oh no, no! Not at all. It’s just…” He scratched the back of his head, his eyes looking to the ground.

Betilla stood on the ground, slightly leaning her body closer while resting her hand on his back. “…Where’s your friend?”

“Well…”

“…Not much of a party animal, is he?”

“That was awful, Betilla.”

She covered her smile with a single hand, but was unable to contain her laughter.

“Why don’t you go check on him?”

“I don’t know, he said he wanted a moment alone.”

“Well, you know what’s best than being alone?”

“Huh—”

She grabbed a single pair of drinks over the table, pushing them into Rayman’s hands. As he opened his mouth, Betilla turned the boy around, and in a single push directed him away from the party. As Rayman recovered stability, he looked back to Betilla once again.

“Being alone together!” She gave him a wink, and flew into the crowd as quick as a shooting star.

Rayman felt a shiver from the bottom to the top, his cheeks turning pink. He shook his head around as to release the feeling, and began walking towards the small forest, holding each cup of drink tightly.

The music began to become quieter, just enough for Rayman to have a time alone with his thoughts.

“I…And I promise- No, I swear that I’ll…No, god no, that’s too much. Augh—”

Almost at the end, the moons’ rays were more and more notorious, and with it the shape of a special someone turned clearer.

“C-Crash, I promise you that I…”

Rayman stood there for a moment. In front of him, there was the cliff, making way for all the wildlife that laid meters below. The sky was bathed in stars, as the Moons gently placed their light above everything else, including Crash.

The Bandicoot was staring at the wonderful sky, seemingly unaware of his surroundings. Perhaps this was a good thing, perhaps it’s what Rayman needed to excuse himself, and…

“No, no.” He thought. There was no reason to back down, nothing for him to fear. This was the greatest chance he had, maybe the only chance he would ever get! Only an idiot would waste such opportunity, he though.

He walked towards his lover, who had still yet to notice his presence. Rayman then held one of the cups near his cheek, making the bandicoot jump, finally looking back at him.

“Hey~”

Crash gave him a big smile in return, holding the cup between his hands, making way for Rayman to sit beside him.

[Sorry, you startled me.]

“It’s alright, I just came here to check on you.”

Crash lowered his ears. [I didn’t realize the fireworks, I missed the whole deal already…]

“Don’t be silly! You have the entire night left to celebrate.”

Crash gave him a simple smile, nodding slowly before taking a sip from the cup.

Rayman merely stared down at his, playing with his fingers.

“I have to ask, though. Why did you choose to leave before the countdown?”

Crash put his drink down. [I didn’t mean to bother you…]

Rayman looks at him. “What are you talking about?”

[I…I’m not used to such a large group of people. I started to get anxious, and I didn’t know what to do.]

“Oh, Crash...” He sighed.

[It’s always been just the 4 of us back home, you know? And when you told me everyone in the Glade was reuniting here, I thought it would be cool. And it really was! Until I just…]

He lowered his head. […Until I started to feel alone in a sea of people I don’t really know.]

“You’re so silly.”

Crash looks back at Rayman, who gives him a cheeky smile.

“All you said is fine! There’s nothing to be ashamed for with what you said. I don’t expect you to get along with everyone like I do, I’ve had my entire life to get to know these people. You’ve only been here a couple of times, and there’s still plenty for you to know and people to meet!”

Rayman stared at the moons, with Crash following alone, getting lost in the winter breeze for a second.

“I’m happy with the fact that you continue to try to get to know my world.”

Crash chuckles. He then gently waves his hand in front of Rayman’s view. [How’s the party been so far, anyway? Are my siblings doing well?]

“Oh sure, they're making social life with everyone just fine!”

[That’s good. Coco tends to go on rambles, I hope that keeps the guests entertained.]

“You bet! Betilla especially loves a good chat.”

Crash giggles softly, continuing to look at Rayman, who slowly began to notice as he turned his head around. They stare into each other’s eyes, for just a moment, unable to look anywhere else.

Rayman felt his pulse go higher, making his cheeks start to burn, along with a strong need to get closer. His eyes running towards the bandicoot’s lips, craving to feel that smile of his.

With large group of fireworks began making noise behind them, Rayman felt his soul return to his body, chuckling as he turned his head around and back to the green field.

“S-so…What would you like for this New Year that’s comin’?”

Wrapping his arms around his legs, Crash took a deep breath, and leaned his face against his knees in thought.

But Rayman already knew what to say, he had it more than rehearsed, for a long while, too. He would tell Crash that he loves him, dearly. He would tell him how important he is to him, and that no matter what happens, he will always be by his side.

Then, he would lean in closer, and then…

“It’s now or never.”

Rayman took a deep breath, holding his drink tightly in his hands, before releasing the tension and letting out his words.

But by that point, Crash had already said what he wanted, without calling his attention to it. Perhaps he thought Rayman was looking…

Rayman asked him again, with certain embarrassment in his voice, making Crash sit straight and turn around to see him. Now face to face, he hesitantly began moving his hands again.

[Be with you... That's all I want.]

"Oh..."

Rayman blushed, perhaps more than he should have. Realizing the foolishness of his plan, he tried to hide his laugher from Crash, who stared in confusion.

Of course, well placed honeyed words were not enough, it was not what Crash needed from him. But rather to be completely, embarrassingly open and honest.

So he looked back at his lover, placing his drink behind him, and using his hands as help to express himself.

"Me too, I want to be with you. I— ...I want you, Crash."

That was all. And Crash immediately accepted his feelings with a smile. A goofy, and adorable smile from ear to ear.

The time was now… Rayman gently rested his hands on top of Crash, and began moving closer. Even with all that nervousness and excitement, all mixed up and hidden deep at the bottom of his throat. Nothing was gonna stop him now. He closed his eyes, and stopped. Awaiting for a response, his mind began to rush. Maybe it was too soon? Maybe this wasn’t what Crash was expecting, or he got cold feet. What if he was making him uncomfortable? He kept counting the seconds, the milliseconds, and the microseconds. “This was a bad, bad idea” His mind screamed.

But just then, he felt that tender touch, making his whole body shiver. The feeling of Crash’s lips, resting against his, slowly pushing forward.

Their fingers intertwined, using their thumbs to gently caress each other’s hands. Wishing to stay like this just for a bit longer, Rayman gently put his lips away, just with enough room to take a breath. He continued to press his lips against Crash’s, who had to let go from one of his hands in order to hold his lover closer, caressing his cheek.

But they could not hold this moment forever, and so, they slowly began to part their kiss. Opening their eyes and starting to realize what just happened.

They laughed, holding each other close to hide it, but failing regardless. Crash held Rayman in his arms and they swirled around over, and over again. It was impossible for the two not to laugh.

Crash however, was caught distracted. As they approached the cliff, a bad timed swirl left Rayman right above the abyss, and the two did their best to push back to safe earth using their own body weight. Falling on the grass, Crash kept holding Rayman tightly against his chest.

Rayman put himself above the Bandicoot, and they stared into each other’s eyes. They began to laugh once again, only interrupted by the last few fireworks being released into the night sky.

“…Happy New year, Crash.”

Raymona would take hold of Rayman's hands, she would try to get his attention as his panic began to set in. She would pull him in for a hug to try to help soothe him before she would lead him over to the bed in their cell. She patted the spot next to her so he could sit down beside her.

"In this glade, there are currently two factions of rabbids settled here. Barranco is the commander of the bad rabbids. He was the one with the red and blue eye. Your brother is who he calls his "Arch Nemesis." Barranco doesn't seek destruction of worlds, but revenge. The teensies bullied them harshly, and this fueled Barranco's desire to hurt others. Treat others the way they were treated in his eyes. The torture he put others through was so bad that many of his own allies began to defect and leave.

This is how the other faction was started. What we call "The Rabbid Resistance." Serguei is the unofficial leader of them. He used to be Barranco's prison warden and the same one that would imprison your brother. Serguei developed respect for him and this led to better treatment for him. Also gave us a hint that not all of them are bad. Once Rayman broke out, that's when many of the other Rabbids started to openly leave Barranco's service.

Serguei is a friend to both of us. He's the same built and height as the rabbid that captured us, but he's got black fur and wears headgear. He's mostly mute but does a great job expressing himself through body language or charades. I had a friend group of three rabbids as well. Lewis, who wears pants and suspenders with a paperboy hat. Speaks with a thick Brooklyn accent. He's a Rabbid that was stationed on the human world, in New York. Supposedly that's where he developed the accent you hear him with when you're under the effects of the comprehend languages spell. He's like the second in command. Then there's Rafael. Wears the biggest sombrero I have ever seen. Peak Rabbid behavior. Was one of Barranco's greatest foot soldiers. Incredibly resilient and likes to perform feats that would normally get any one like us hurt or killed. Comes out of it with barely a scratch. Lastly, there's Sasha. Sasha was Barranco's second in command, and she learned a lot of things through him directly. Things like the code to his vault of toys. "Toys" to Barranco could refer to his weapons or his experiments. Anything that brings him amusement. Sasha is the resistance's tech expert.

Once Rayman finds out we're in trouble, I know he's going to go grab our rabbid buddies to come help us out of here. I know you are afraid of Rabbids, but you'll be able to tell which ones are here to help us when they get here."

Raymona would pull her boyfriend into her embrace and would just hug him the whole time. She rested her cheek on the top of his head and tried her best to ease his fear. They would hear the door to their cell open, and two smaller rabbids would enter the cell to order them to start moving. They would hold plungers to their backs and began nudging them along. Raymona took hold of her boyfriend's hand as they walked to where they needed to be. They would lead Rayman and Raymona to a room full of bottles of chemicals and other liquids. There were four tables where subjects would be strapped down to them. They would start to tie Raymona down with metal chains. Restricting her movement as more rabbids came to start strapping Rayman down to the table. Barranco would enter the room and would give a devious chuckle at seeing Raymona tied down with chains.

"I'd like to see you try to burn your way out of these. I know a simple gum mutant wouldn't hold you back once this process begins. These are impossible to break, and if you try to melt them with that fire magic of yours, you'll end up burning yourself too.

Beginning test: "Little Chemist" on the nemesis doppleganger. You better drink these, or the table will emit a large electrical shock to your system."

Barranco would start pulling bottles of various chemicals down from the shelf and began to mix them together. He would try to force Rayman to drink the concoction.

Okay so for now there is nothing they can do but play along with these things for som time until the help comes?

They killed everything even the Core of the planet. That is all I remember for that I hate the Rabbids so much, they are homicidial creatures! They did a genocide! killed everything that crossed their path... are the Rabbids of this Glade as violent as mine? I hope not... I don't want to revive everything again!... ❞

Said him as he walked around the cell with a bit of a panic attack flaring up, remembering everything, every scram, every maniacal laughted coming from the Rabbids, how everyone had to be evacuated for salvation to other universes, he doesn't know if a few of his glade Were even alive anymore! He doesn't know nothing!.

So I don’t draw very much… kinda… but I attempted to draw RTgame in my own… style I guess??? I don’t really have a specific style tho.

Basically, how I might draw RT in later art. Floaty bill cipher type top hat, Rayman limbs, purple everything besides the shoes which are dark blue. Hair I cannot draw very well so he might be bald most of the time. Main defining feature is the top hat and shoes.

Hands Mr. Dark the Protoon

The pink glow of the magical orb cascaded across the room, casting deep purple shadows that stretched far behind Mr. Dark. It was as if all other light had been sucked out of the area, leaving nothing behind but the Protoon’s luminescence. The Nightmare seemed to be frozen in place, his red and yellow eyes nearly unreadable.

A hand emerged from his cloak, claws briefly reaching for the Protoon…

But they instead swiped through the air, and the anonymous stranger was trapped in a bubble in an instant. Gaze intense, he shot a glare at the anon.

“I don't know your intent,” he growled, “But don’t take this so lightly.” he clicked his tongue, turning his attention back to the Protoon, “Only a fool would think this a plaything.”

Even as a Nightmare, he could sense the power ebbing and flowing around the artifact. Deep within his core, he could still feel the connection he had to it. Even now, when he was no longer a true Limbless, it beckoned like a long lost friend…

A chill passed through him.

Temptation. It was alluring. The power, the possibilities, the familiarity… It drew him closer and closer. His heart pounded in his ears. Yet, his feet were firmly planted in place.

The cruel temptress of trying to gain the attention of the Bubble Dreamer once again danced around in his mind. Despite his many attempts and failures, as well as the multiple instances of the Glade being put under attack by other more hostile creatures, Polokus hadn’t changed in the slightest… Dark wanted to make that change. Even if it came at a price, he wanted the Glade to be kept safe, and not by a teenager that should never have lost his childhood to the plaguing nightmares…

Yet, Dark knew that another attempt wouldn't work. He had learned that his own morality got in the way of causing any true damage–enough that it would genuinely garner the attention of Polokus, and not just Rayman. Despite his “evil” ways, he would have been considered “soft” by many villains.

He was realizing now, that such evil ways were not for him. They never were, despite his determined misgivings. Regardless of his attitude or so-called edgy life choices.

Not to mention, he had been offered forgiveness, not just once, but twice. Surely he wouldn't be offered the same hand if he tried a third time…

… And did he really want to break that trust? Trust that he never truly attempted to gain, yet received due to his own actions and morality? As much as he didn't want to admit it, he did enjoy the company of those he had made acquaintance with over the years. While he would have discarded them with reckless abandon before, in favor of a brighter sky, he found himself clinging onto them more and more…

Mr. Dark frowned under his cloak, and clenched his fists.

At any rate, this had to be a trick of some sort. A trap set up by that baleful Betilla. She knew of his presence, and he was aware of her acknowledgement.

But, even if it wasn't a trap…

He turned back to the stranger, cloak billowing around his form. Resuming his intense glare, he glowered, “You will return this to where you found it.” his claws wrapped around the bottom of the bubble, and his eyes glowing from beneath the shadows of his hat, “If you do not, I will know, and you will face my wrath.”

I think this fandom needs more villainous Christmas content, and also we really need some light Villain content right now; so since the PLF were formed and Shigaraki was still with them for last Christmas, here’s what I headcanon Shigaraki & the lieutenants got each other during their tense first few days after the merger.

Shigaraki

He get everyone video games. And also personal consoles for each and every one of them. Now Hero Aca is 200 years in the future, but I’m gonna list specific games & series anyway and just say if it still exists, it’s the latest game from that series, if not, it’s something similar to that series. With that said, here’s what he got everyone.

Dabi: Doom

Toga: Assassins’ Creed

Spinner: Grand Theft Auto

Twice: Animal Crossing

Mr. Compress: Mario

Geten: Dark Souls

Skeptic: Professor Layton

Trumpet: Command & Conquer

Redestro: X-COM

Attitude after merger review: Good marks; no noticeable signs of favoring old friends over enemies turned allies. Good job hiding that animosity Tomura!

He went to a book store and got everyone books; because they’re good gifts that still allow him the opportunity to knock everyone’s literacy skills by saying they should read more. It’s an important balance for him to strike, getting good gifts without appearing friendly in the slightest. Anyway, here’s the genres he got everyone

Attitude after merger review: Would’ve been fine if not for that dig at Geten’s uneducated status. Try harder next year, please.

Reminiscent of her pre-quirk Christmases, she decided to make homemade gifts for everyone using whatever she had available. Which was a lot, actually, since she was not afraid to spend Redestro’s money on supplies. In fact she went out of her way to get the most expensive supplies available at every opportunity.

Shigaraki: A grim miniature carnival ground where action figures of All Might & other pros are tortured and mutilated.

Dabi: a miniature statue of him made out of platinum and then crudely painted.

Spinner: An origami model of Stain with a vast arsenal of origami swords.

Twice: a Hand-knitted toque just a bit to big for his head.

Mr. Compress: A collection of new masks in fancy paints.

Geten: A mountaineering pick-ax with a handle in his color scheme.

Skeptic: Just a piece of paper saying “I know about the neck snapping. I look forward to working with you.”

Trumpet: A Trumpet.

Redestro: A bust of his head made of solid gold and smiling his to-wide fake-y smile.

Attitude after merger review: Also docking points for a dig at a former adversary, and what’s worse is it wasn’t even in the form of a proper present. Also losing points for going out or your way to spend Redestro’s money, which granted, everyone else was doing too, but you were a bit upfront with it. Employ more subtlety next time!

Spinner

Spinner also got everyone video games like Shigaraki did; however he looked into indie games. Gotta support the little guys, y’know? That said, indie games 200 years in the future are nearly equivalent to AAA games now in all the ways that matter, so there’s not too much of a difference except it’s all spiritual successors, no franchises. Huge selection though, and there’s successors to everything so Spinner’s set.

Attitude after merger review: Full marks just like Tomura, as expected of his closest lieutenant. Excellent gifting Spinner!

Now that he has money, he just went on some Amazon-esque website and got the first thing he saw the reminded him of everyone. As such, his gifts are the most sporadic & random.

Shigaraki: A bottle of Kurogiri’s favorite wine.

Dabi: A quality pack of cigarettes.

Toga: Hairclips with characters from an anime she liked growing up.

Spinner: One of the spinning whetstone things for sharpening blades.

Mr. Compress: A new hat.

Geten: a pair of mittens.

Skeptic: Several Spools or wire + a pair of wire cutters.

Trumpet: A maintenance kit for trumpets.

Redestro: A $1000 donation to a quirkless rights movement in his name. (Can you tell he’s still mad about Giran?)

Attitude after merger review: Once more, major marks docked for taking a dig at an enemy-turned-ally that you can hardly even pretend is a proper gift. Once again; if you can’t do anything nice, be more sublet when acting mean.

Mr. Compress

The richest of the lot: he also just got everyone some piece of technology/luxury rich person thing, with the difference that his presents were really big & expensive. He was rather invested in endearing himself to the new team.

Shigaraki: A kind of really big yacht, one with windows around the deck to keep people from seeing him. Imagine a cross between a yacht & a limo, actually.

Dabi: A stupidly big TV with like 10 different streaming services pre-paid on it.

Toga: A self-driving car.

Spinner: One of those 4-wheeled dirt bikes

Twice: His very own mountain lodge.

Mr. Compress: His very own hot tub.

Geten: His own private jet, complete with a walk-in freezer installed in the back.

Skeptic: A warehouse & collection of those big data storage units; enough to back-up all the data his company had ever collected.

Trumpet: A new van

Attitude after merger review: Full marks and well earned; because even if they weren’t always the most personalized, they were too high quality for it to matter. And for once the expense wasn’t a mark against him because he was spending his own money!

Final review: Toga got everyone the best gifts, with Twice taking 2nd place, because theirs were both thoughtful and unique. Even the non-gift to Skeptic & Redestro couldn't bring them below anyone else’s score. Everyone else sucks at this. 3rd place goes to Redestro though, because “money can’t by happiness” is a phrase that doesn’t apply to poor people.

Ok , can I just say that I love this concept ? It’s so good ! And also I used to be obsessed with rayman back in 2022 , before I jumped into a hat in time in the year 2023 , and I can totally see how the conductor and globox would go well cause they have so many kids to take care of , and eventually the pool noodle man with Betilla acting like the parents of Rayman and hat kid :) I could totally see it happening soon !

Finally finished an artwork with two of my biggest interests interacting together through music! 🎤🎸🎶

Like I have literal headcanons for them if they would ever interact:

Rayman and Hat Kid would bond well until Hat Kid gets chaotic and Rayman feels like a big brother annoyed with her antics and tries to keep her away from danger

Conductor and Globox could bond with dealing TOO MANY kids, though i don't know how else they can relate beyond it. I literally think Conductor would find Globox so annoying (like DJ Grooves COUGH COUGH) but maybe they also bond though their drinks?

and Betilla with Snatcher could have nice conversations about being parents themselves, well more like Betilla telling Snatcher that he should be proud of being kinda of parental figure for Hat Kid and just overall so sweet and wholesome conversation I'M SO NORMAL ABOUT IT AAAAAAASFUHIFSU 💓💖 💕 💥 🔥 i so badly wanna make ahit mod with of the concept hat kid meeting rayman...

Betilla:

Betilla the fairy, one of the original nymphs. One of polokus oldest creatures created. Also seen as a daughter for him as well.

She is a good hearted gal with a quick witted humor. She is easily recognisable with her pale skin and auburn hair and a smile that can light up a room. Her laughter is cheery and well toned. Most of the time she wears her green 2piece and her witch-like hat, but on colder days she tends to take out the starry embroidered coat with matching hat. She sports a pale purple lip and a snatched eyeliner, hugging her Blue-grey eyes. And freckles to make her look youthful. She also have a more brit accent(like british but….not fully british).

She has the most powerful magic of all the nymphs, and she learns new tricks every single time. She, like Ray, was counted on to rescue the glade from danger, but as she grew older the energy of saving it slowly came down. Until Rayman popped up, from nowhere.

Her and the Magician found Rayman stranded on a seashore, near her side of the glade. All in shock they wondered if the little guy was hurt cause of his missing limbs. Did he have parents? Where did he come from?

She got very concerned and decided to take him home with her. As he grew older, he started to call her mom - like a normal child would do. At first Betilla was shocked and tried to convince herself that she was not the mother of this child. But the more she thought about how he would never seen his parents she made a decision to adopt him, as her own little boy.

Betilla over all is respected in the glade of dreams, she is very aware of the surroundings and environment around. The people and their abilities. Her rival is Mr.Dark - a mysterious man in a dark cloak. The magician usually helps out with him, but most of the time he hides under his hat.

Betilla has 5 sisters, each one lives in a different part of the glade. Betilla is the oldest of the sister nymphs. And you can only image how big-sister like she is. But they are always there to help each other out.

Betilla is close with nature, loves having a tea party in her botanical garden in her pleasing cottage home. She bakes cookies and bread for the occasion, all filled with homemade jam and creams.

If she is working then she is at the fairy council, working with other fairies on how to make the glade of dreams a safer and better place. She is in charge, besides her sisters and Ly the fairy, a good friend of hers.

Of course Murfy, the greenbottle tries to break in here and there, easily annoying.

If she is not at the council she will usually stop at Uglette’s, hearing how she is doing. Uglette helped her a lot when Rayman was really young about parenting behaviour. And how every child is different….every 600 of them.

What does she like:

She likes peace and quiet, and having a good time with the other folks of the glade. She likes reading and calligraphy. Planning events and having meetings. But also to close her wings and take a nap in her cozy bellflower bed.

She loves scents, candles and tapestries. Yeah she’s that gal.

I don’t know I really find Betilla interesting but hard to make headcanon’s to.

Hello people !

Okay so this one shot is based off an idea I had a few years back. I finally got the motivation to write something about it, so... Here you go.

This is pretty angsty, there are references to torture and all that joyful stuff (no actual description of it though), so be careful when reading this. Hopefully you'll all like it.

Rayman’s cell was cold and damp- it had always been, and that would never change, he knew that much. Just like the rest of the castle of the new Master of the Glade, it was stone and iron all around. No nature, no trace of the environment the defeated hero had used to know all his life… No, it was different, oh so different.

How many days, months, years had it been? This was the question he was always wondering, never getting an answer. There were no windows in his cell, nothing that would allow him to know what was happening outside after he had won. Were there some of his people still fighting? Was this possible at all? Only Polokus knew how long it had been since he had last seen Globox and his family, Murphy, or even any teensie. And then… Then, there were Ly and Betilla, as well as all the other fairies. For all he knew, no one had managed to escape the invasion. Fighting Mister Dark was one thing, and it went the same for Razorbeard, André, or even the Magician…

Fighting an alliance made by all of them was another.

Sure, Rayman had been through a lot, saving the Glade since his creation- his main purpose after all! But all this time, he had only been fighting only one enemy at a time. Now, things were different, oh, very different… After the Heart of the World got corrupted, so was magic- and thus, all the magical beings, such as the teensies, the fairies, or even Rayman himself. Once that was done, there wasn’t much to do to capture everyone at this point… With a major part of the Glade using magic as life a source or even energy, enemies with mechanical weapons like the pirates or the hoodlums were much stronger. The fact that they were much abundant certainly didn’t help and, soon enough, the Glade was enslaved.

Now, the former hero of the Glade could do nothing, nothing but wait, for an opportunity… For anything, really, at this point. Was hope really lost? Was it all over?

Weak and unable to move too much, he was lying there in his freezing cell. Without much energy left in him, he could barely make any effort without feeling like he could faint, and it was the same for keeping his body warm enough to survive. It was clear that the new Master of the Glade wanted him to suffer without any interruption… An endless pain, fuelled by the dread of not even knowing what had happened after he got captured. However, the war against the pirates was enough for him to guess: if this was anything like it, or even worse, the whole Glade probably looked nothing like it used to be. And for its inhabitants, well… He wasn’t sure if he really wanted to know.

He closed his eyes, not knowing if he’d even fall asleep despite how exhausted he was feeling at the moment. It was only when he heard footsteps echoing in the nearby hallway that he reopened his eyes, confused for a moment. Wait, there wasn’t anyone else besides- Oh.

It had to be him. Instantly, Rayman’s expression drastically changed, going from perplexity to pure hatred. The footsteps were slow, and the hero just knew the other wanted to drag the suspense out- but as if there was any to begin with. Eventually, a familiar silhouette appeared behind the bars of his cell, one that the limbless hero had come to hate with a passion he had never felt before.

The leader of this whole invasion- Mister Dark himself.

How long had it been since Rayman had seen him at all? He couldn’t tell, but he sure knew he didn’t want to be in his presence again.

-“Well, well, well,” said his lifelong enemy, his tone mocking and sadistic: “If this isn’t our dear and powerful hero. Or, well, not so much, is it?”

The latter remained silent, gritting his teeth as he glared at his opponent, biting any type of retort- the other had taught him a long time ago this wasn’t a good idea. Countless of times before, Rayman had had to witness his friends being tortured in front of him for something he himself did or said. For a being created to protect his people, there wasn’t any greater punishment than actually being the source of their pain. And so…

The hero knew he couldn’t do anything but keep his mouth shut. After all the time he had spent here, his enemy had learnt what made him react, what made him crack. The more Rayman fell for his traps, the more that monster learnt from he and his friends, which just made their whole situation more terrible than it already was.

Instead of being bored of the hero’s obvious lack of reaction, the cloaked being just chuckled darkly, giving Rayman a look of great interest which… In itself wasn’t really reassuring.

-“Aw, not even trying to fight back anymore? Is this really all that’s left of the one that oh so bravely stood up to me once?” he insisted, tilting his invisible head to the side, the small orbs of his hat jingling around as he did so: “An empty shell? Some body without any fight in it? A poor, pathetic being?”

The temptation to snap back was strong, and Rayman had to bite his tongue not to do so. He knew this was all the other was waiting for, and there was no way he’d give him that pleasure. If he had to fight him, this wasn’t through words, this would be through actions… Once the right opportunity would present itself to him, that was. For the moment, however… There was nothing he could do but endure it. And while he knew that… That didn’t make it less harder to hold himself back.

His lack of answer still seemed to please Mister Dark. He supposed breaking him had been the other’s goal all along, and he had to admit he most likely was nothing with the hero he once used to be. Still, there was still… Some spark inside of him. A small one, yes, but it was there.

Just waiting for the right moment.

-“Perhaps it is time for you to know what happened to your dear world, Rayman,” eventually murmured his enemy, cruelty visible in his eyes. Nonetheless, the words still caught the limbless hero off-guard- wait, what? His surprise must have seen clear as crystal for his opponent, as the latter chuckled again:

-“Oh, maybe there’s still something to break inside of you,” he then extended one of his limbless hands to the lock of the cell, unlocking it with his dark magic: “But this is fine- we have all the time for that, after all.”

The hero frowned, his heartbeat quickening as the door of his cell opened, for the first time in… He couldn’t even tell. There was no notion of time in that hellish place. And while he was not tied up in any way… He knew it was all the same- without his powers, Rayman was just an harmless being among all the others. This was exactly why Mister Dark entered the room without any fear. Since the Heart of the World got corrupted, he had become much more powerful and… In comparison, well, Rayman was merely an insect. It was clear that his enemy could kill him very easily if he wanted to, but… That was the thing.

He didn’t want to. He just wanted his arch-nemesis to suffer eternally or, the latter hoped, until boredom stopped him first. In any case, when Mister Dark caught his hoodie and lifted him up in the air… There wasn’t much he could do. His hands and feet were dangling next to his body and, when the other forced him to stand up… Rayman wasn’t sure if he were able to. Without energy, any effort was making him dizzy, but who knew what his enemy would do if he didn’t obey.

The hero didn’t want to see anyone getting hurt because of him again. And so, despite how exhausted he felt, despite the bags under his eyes, he shakily stood up after Mister Dark let go of him. Yeah… There was no way he would be able to throw his fist in his state and, even if he could, it wouldn’t do anything without his magic back.

-“Follow me,” was all the other said, his tone back to seriousness. He didn’t even have to warn Rayman about trying to escape anymore- the latter was very aware of the consequences by now. And, then again, if standing up was a challenge on its on, then… So would be walking or even running. Despite that, the limbless hero did his best to follow his enemy. His eyes scanned the hallways, trying to memorize them in case he ever managed to leave his cell on his own… But the place was just a labyrinth and, with how tired he was, he soon was unable to focus very long. No, instead, his mind was trying really hard to keep him awake enough to keep walking. His vision became blurry after a while and his body started lose its balance- until he actually fell down on the cold floor made out of stones. He was dizzy, his head barely able to keep up with what was going on around him- until he heard a disappointed sigh.

It wasn’t long until he felt a hand grabbing his hair, pulling on it painfully. The hero let out a pitiful whine of pain but wasn’t able to move much in response. His nose hurt as he was dragged on the floor, his skin hurting as it was scrapped against the uneven stones.

-“Oh, if only your friends could see you right now…” mused the dark being, not slowing down as he kept talking: “Their only hope, the one being they trust so much to end their suffering… And look at you: you’re not even able to walk on your own anymore. How devastated they would feel, just looking at pathetic you have become.”

Rayman didn’t answer, but the words upset him more than he would have thought. When his only purpose was to protect the Glade, then… What was he supposed to be, if he couldn’t even save himself? With how weak he was, it was clear he wouldn’t be able to save a single being…

After what seemed like hours to him, he finally felt the other let go of him. His head fell down, hitting the floor painfully and making him wince in pain. He clenched his jaw not to make a sound- no, he would not give his enemy that satisfaction!

But then again, it was quite ironic to think that way, given how he looked right now.

When he reopened his eyes, he squinted. There was a lot more light than what he had grown used to- and this was because he had been put in front of a large window, one that was giving him a full view of a landscape he no longer recognized.

The Glade of Dreams- or rather, what was left of it.

What used to be islands full of trees were now barren soil. The grass had disappeared, the blue sky had been replaced by a perpetual black one, filled with smoke and toxic gas. The seas had lost their transparency, poisoned with chemicals and detritus. The Sun… Wasn’t even visible anymore, and most of the light seemed to come from large towers and buildings spread across the land. The mountains had lost their green hue and fires could be seen all around the place. Architecture the limbless hero could recognize very well had sprout, replacing the natives’ one. One island was filled with buildings that just woke up memories from the war against the robot pirates, another one was filled with tents reminding him of the hoodlums… And the island they were on was filled with metallic buildings, something he had seen somewhere-

When he had entered the Magician’s secret base.

The sight alone horrified him and his eyes widened in absolute disbelief. It was one thing to imagine what had happened to the Glade after his capture… It was another to be forced to see it. This was… So much worse than when his world had been invaded before. During earlier wars, the vegetation had still remained, making the landscapes recognizable despite everything- but here?

Here, Rayman couldn’t see anything that reminded him of the world he used to live in. It was like… He was on another planet- no, in another, entirely different universe.

This couldn’t be real, this had to be fake, this had to be an illusion…!

-“Ah, I see you like the changes we made to the Glade,” Mister Dark’s voice rose again, bringing Rayman back to reality: “I must admit I am quite impressed. I didn’t think those idiots would be able to do more than fighting under my orders but, here we are.”

The “idiots”, Rayman knew, were actually Razorbeard and André. The two of them couldn’t stand one another, and the same could be said about their armies. And while it was true they weren’t very clever on their own… Under someone like Mister Dark, their power could be used for the most terrible things- and now, Rayman had to face the product of it all.

There was nothing left of the Glade of Dreams he used to know. Nothing. He gritted his teeth, and tried to look away. He didn’t want to see this- it was unbearable, knowing what was happening now and yet being unable to do anything to fight back or help anyone. But of course, the monster next to him wouldn’t give him the ability to ignore it. Soon enough, the hand came back to grab his hair again, forcing him to watch the landscape in front of him:

-“Oh, no, no, no,” he cooed cruelly, dragging the limbless being closer to the window, before his tone got lower and threatening: “Keep looking- I want you to see what I did to your everything. Isn’t it painful? To realize how useless you have become? To see what happened to your precious land?”

Rayman wanted to close his eyes, he really did, but he knew he would get punished for doing so. And by that… He knew that someone else would get punished. So, he kept his eyes open, glancing back at his enemy. Pure hatred was radiating from him as he glared at the other.

-“You’re underestimating us all,” he spat, his voice full of contained anger.

-“Is that what you think?” the cloaked being retorted with an evil laugh: “And where’s your army? Where are your friends?”

The hero looked away, gritting his teeth more. Yeah, that hurt. Before he was able to retort anything, his opponent continued, sadism clearly audible:

-“I’ll tell you where they are: in cages, in working camps, in mines… What is left of your people is either kept on the ships or used on land. There is no one out of here, out of my grasp. You are all alone. No one is ever coming to save you.”

Mister Dark leaned towards him and forced his head up at the same time:

-“And you, hero, are not going to save anyone,” he whispered cruelly, pronouncing each words slowly enough for it to register in Rayman’s stubborn mind: “You are nothing.”

Those words just hurt the limbless being further, only reminding him of how useless he had become. But hadn’t it been the same, back when he had been captured by the pirates? Didn’t he feel the exact same way, thinking their world was doomed? Sure, it hadn’t been to the point it was now, but… He just couldn’t believe that this was over, that there was… Nothing else to do anymore.

He didn’t want to believe it.

His glare intensified and he narrowed his eyes, his fists clenching as much as his body could allow it:

-“I will take you down,” he promised, both to the cloaked being and to himself, his voice filled with determination: “No matter how long it’s going to take me, I’ll find a way to free everyone. You haven’t won yet- not as long as I’m alive.”

The other seemed surprised in his change of attitude…And rather pleased too. Probably because it meant his plaything could still be broken for a while. But Rayman didn’t care: he had meant every single word.

-“Is that so,” mused the other with amusement: “Well, I suppose only time will tell, won’t it?”

An evil laugh left him and it was obvious the latter didn’t believe him in the slightest. Nonetheless, that just made Rayman’s determination even stronger.

He was going to save the Glade of Dreams, again, like all the times before… And absolutely nothing would stop him.

Fictober 1: “It will be fun, trust me.”

"Ten more steps and I'm turning back."

"It's just over here, I promise!" Rayman beckoned, excitement very clear in his voice.

"You said that five minutes ago too." she mumbled, but trudged forwards across the endless white void nonetheless.

Ly had always been very curious of what it was like outside the Fairy Glade, but the past day more or less convinced her that snow just wasn't her element in any way. Even with the giant coat covering her from head to toe, the oversized scarf, the boots, the gloves, and even a thick hat helped very little against the unfamiliar amounts of cold seeping through every tiny, even slightly uncovered inch of skin. She had been lightly shivering since they stepped out of the warm cabin, and every step just reaffirmed her belief that, with all due respect, Helena of the Nymphs was crazy to live anywhere near such temperatures.

Nonetheless, she continued onwards after her friend, as the last thing she wanted was to get lost in this sparkly white hell. Rayman's sense of direction was the only thing she could rely on to get back. She could easily discern one tree from another in the Glade, but out here, she may as well be lost in abyss. At least he certainly didn't have any problems, rushing through the snow as he would do anywhere else. Barely even needed the coat he was wearing.

"We're here!" he called out, conveniently from behind yet another snowy mound.

Ly groaned and hastened her steps as much as she could. Normally, getting to him would have been as easy as leaping across, but she would usually do so in clothes that didn't restrict every attempted motion. As soon as she managed to climb past this final obstacle, she had to admit the sight was worth the trek.

A pond stretched across the snowy landscape, frozen still in this weather. The sun was just high enough to cast its light upon the ice, granting it the appearance of a lake of pure crystal. It was rare to see water frozen in the Glade, much less in such a volume. Rayman looked very proud her amazement and wasted no time in shamelessly abusing the possibilities. He leaped forward and landed right upon the ice, gracefully sliding forwards from the momentum.

The fairy stepped forward as well, partly to follow and partly because the sight was just far too fascinating to ignore. As soon as her boot landed on the lake though, the shift in her weight caused her foot to slide forwards. She cried out, frantically waving her arms to regain her balance, but it was no use. Her sight shifted from the lake, to the clear blue sky as she fell to a sit, luckily still just in the middle of the snow.

"You alright there?" she heard briefly as Rayman slid by on one foot, trying his absolute best not to laugh.

"...of course I am." she grumbled.

His concern touched her deeply and she wanted to repay him with a nice, friendly and swift smack upside the head. To do so though, meant she had to stand up again, which quickly proved to be a very difficult task. She leaned forward and tried to get up, but just couldn't figure out how to adjust and merely danced along the ground for several moments, while sliding deeper into the makeshift ice rink.

Ly's cheeks quickly filled with indignant red and she attempted to get up once more. This time, her efforts sort of paid off, but as soon as she would steady herself, a horrid wobble in her legs did short work of her hard-earned victory. Rayman showered her with tips from the sidelines, but after a while she just tuned him out entirely, determined to achieve a standing position on her own.

After several more attempts, she finally managed to stay upright for a little while and for the first time, she managed to keep her balance as well, albeit slightly wobbling all the same. Seeing Rayman zipping across the lake steeled her resolve and following his example, she took another step forward. This proved to be a difficult task, but one she wasn't about to shy away from. With every step, she would grow bolder, more confident and more firm on her feet.

The cold hardly seemed to matter any longer, as the thrill of such an unfamiliar challenge proved more than enough to heat her right up. Redoubling her efforts, she managed to slide forwards on her feet this time. It wasn't as graceful as Rayman's movements, but it was definitely better than her attempts thus far. Ly laughed and continued, even losing her hat in the fervor of this newfound enjoyment.

It didn't last much longer though. She grew overconfident and sped up far too much in one go to control it. Her giggle turned into a loud cry as she wobbled violently, before the boot once again turned against her. Her foot left the ground and her whole body lurched backwards. She closed her eyes, anticipating a quite nasty fall, only to feel something crashing into her from behind. The fall was inevitable, but the landing ended up much smoother, sliding across the ice in a sit, rather than trying to mimic an overturned spider.

"Careful now, you could have hurt yourself back there." she heard, his voice forcing her eyes open.

His intention may have been to gracefully catch her, but that proved a little too much even for him. Instead, they were both in a heap on the ground, just barely careening to stop. They both looked at each other for just a moment, before they started laughing. She pulled the limbless close and embraced him for the effort at least.

He enjoyed the affection for a moment, before backing out and standing up again, holding a hand out for her. Ly grinned and took it, letting him slowly and gently bring her to her feet again.

"Now, just try to relax, okay?" he said.

Ly nodded and let him dictate her every step from then on. One tentative step after another. A slide, one short, one long. A spin and a fall, then immediately back to her feet again. Another spin, another fall, but he was right there to pick her up again. Another slide, more confident than before. The wobble turned to firm stance as they both raced across the ice.

Hand in hand they continued, their motions steadily turning into something akin to a dance. Where he learned the steps, she would never know. Where she picked up on them, she didn't care. The quiet winter serenity was all that mattered as their laughter echoed along the snowy lands for hours on end.

"Thank you." she sighed, wrapping her nearly frozen fingers around the warm mug.

"Go slow, or it'll burn your mouth." he warned, placing their coats near the fire to dry up.

"Experience?" Ly asked, reaching up to brush the leftover droplets from all the rime on her hair.

"More than I can count." he said, settling down by her, but only after procuring a thick blanket.

The fairy was still shivering wildly, but the warmth around her did its best to seep into her bones as quickly as possible. Both of them were too caught up to realize they'd been out longer than healthy, especially for a fairy who has hardly stepped beyond the borders of the Fairy Glade before. By the time they returned, Ly could swear even her breath was like ice. Rayman made sure upon returning to warm her and the cabin up as quickly as possible though. As always, his friend's plight was paramount.

Of course, he wasn't about to go unrewarded though and once she was all snug, he sat down and snuggled right up into her arms, letting the warm cloth drape across both of them.

"Thank you."

"You already said that." he chuckled, squeezing a couple droplets from his floppy hair.

"Not just for this. For... just everything really. For bringing me out here." she said, embracing the limbless. She paused, then continued with a grin. "For not letting me back out."

He leaned back further and returned the grin. "It's what friends do. They listen, they help and they'll make sure to push you out the door, when there’s no other option."

They shared a laugh and just sat around afterwards, while warmth seeped back into their tired, still shivering bodies. Before long, the only noises in the cabin were the crackling fire and the soft snores of the two would-be ice skaters.
