5 Minute Review: The Nikon Z 50mm F1.2 S Is Gorgeous and Vibrant!
Does this lens from Nikon have something that makes it super special?
Reviews Editor Hillary Grigonis talks about her findings with this beautiful Nikon lens. The Nikon Z 50mm f1.2 S was reviewed recently by us. And it’s an overall very beautiful lens. Nikon has always been a solid lens maker. Not only does this lens have great image quality, but it’s weather sealed. That’s so incredibly important for many of us who actively shoot outdoors. So we took our full…

My crew and I headed out to San Diego for our second installment of the CREMO brand TV spot productions with Director Don Hannah (yes, Daryl Hannah’s brother). Don, an old friend and colleague of my First AC Paul Ray II and I -he is such a cool cat… He came to set rocking the printed individual scenes mounted on large boards for client and crew to follow and even built a mini-mood setting display that included some rich wood crates, brass trinkets and abstract photos. Happy to be on set with him as always and talk old times with a brother! We were joined by my awesome San Diego Gaffer Dave Litenberg and team who were excellent (as usual). Special thanks to my make up perfectionist Melissa Swarberg for all her support over the years as well as the laughs – and to Charles Colliday for all the BTS stills, you guys rock!
For this production we rolled with my Sony F5 (with the F55 upgrade) and my Zeiss CP2 50mm for most A-Cam shots with second camera being a Sony Fs7 running with a Canon 70-200 F4 on the Meta Bones speed booster for long sniper product shots. Per our shot list we rocked most masters on the Dana Dolly rolling in 60p/4K as much as possible. My crew even snuck in my Sony A7s MII for some ultra-bokeh running full frame with my Canon F1.2/50mm speedie. Toys, toys toys.
For lighting, we dropped some ND on the store front windows and build a constant daylight fill with two daylight balanced Arri 650 HMIs then rocked the key with another diffused Arri 650. We bounced fill up and over for a nice, crisp tinge on the shoulders of our actors using our Kino Diva Bi-color LEDs and then dropped in some Matchstick bi-color LEDs for sparks on the tables and product… And, yes, I even got to add in my home depot XMAS specials around the top of the mirrors. A fun shoot with an excited and very happy client.
On to the next!
How’s My Hair: Part 2 My crew and I headed out to San Diego for our second installment of the CREMO brand TV spot productions with Director Don Hannah (yes, Daryl Hannah's brother).

Have your say: Best prime lens of 2019
Best prime lens of 2019
2019 was a banner year for lenses, as Canon, Nikon and Panasonic grow their respective full-frame mirrorless systems and Sony continued to add optics to its E-mount lineup. In this poll, we're giving you the change to vote for your favorite prime lenses of 2019 but as always, if you think we've missed something, let us know in the comments.
Voting runs through December 15th, and once the vote has closed we'll run a second poll to find your choice for overall product of the year.
Canon
Canon is busy building out its nascent EOS R full-frame mirrorless system, but while most of the action has been in the zoom category this year, Canon also added a stellar prime lens in the form of the RF 85mm F1.2L IS USM. Also in consideration is a lens which became available just a little too late to be included in last year's poll, the EF-M 32mm F1.4 STM - a fast, compact standard prime for the APS-C M-system.
Canon EF-M 32mm F1.4 STM Canon RF 85mm F1.2L IS USM Fujifilm
Fujifilm has been expending a lot of energy on new cameras this year, from the entry-level X-A7 to the flagship medium-format GFX100. But the company also released a handful of lenses, both primes and zooms.
Among them were two fixed focal-length options that we've really enjoyed in 2019 - the GF 50mm F3.5 and the tiny XF 16mm F2.8 - both really nice, compact walk-around lenses on Fujifilm's medium-format and APS-C format cameras, respectively.
Fujifilm GF 50mm F3.5 R LM WR Fujifilm XF 16mm F2.8 R WR Leica
2019 saw Leica release the refreshed Q2 and mirrorless SL2, and to accompany the latter, Wetzlar unveiled two new lenses, a 35mm F2 and 50mm F2. We've never no much as even handled either, but both appear to be excellent performers, and we know that you'll have opinions.
Do either (or both?) make it on to your list of the best primes of 2019? Let us know.
Leica APO-Summicron-SL 35mm F2 ASPH Leica APO-Summicron-SL 50mm F2 ASPH Nikon
This year for Nikon has been all about consolidating its Z-series lens lineup, following the launch of the Z6 and Z7 in 2018. Nikon released three Z-series primes this year, and two of them (the 85mm and 58mm 'Noct') have impressed us in our initial shooting. We just got hold of the Z 24mm F1.8 S and it looks like another excellent performer. Let us know what you think by casting a vote.
Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm F0.95 S Noct Nikon Z 85mm F1.8 S Nikon Z 24mm F1.8 S Panasonic
Panasonic has been putting a lot of energy into its full-frame L-mount lineup this year, and the S Pro 50mm F1.4 is a fine 'reference' lens for that system. But the company also found time to update one of its most popular primes for Micro Four Thirds: The Leica DG Summilux 25mm F1.4 II ASPH. Did either of them make it into your lens collection?
Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm F1.4 II ASPH Panasonic Lumix S Pro 50mm F1.4 Sigma
Sigma released plenty of lenses this year, although several were L-mount versions of existing designs. The company's two genuinely 'new' primes exist at opposite poles of the company's lineup - the small and lightweight 45mm F2.8 at one end, and the large and heavy (and pricey) 35mm F1.2 'Art' at the other.
Both are excellent in their own way - did either impress you in 2019? Cast your vote and let us know.
Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art Sigma 45mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary Sony
Sony had a great year in terms of lenses, releasing three high-quality prime lenses for its full-frame a9 and a7-series cameras. The FE 35mm F1.8 is a perfect walk-around lens, whereas the 135mm F1.8 is aimed more specifically at portrait professionals. Meanwhile the FE 600mm F4 is a perfect tool for sports and wildlife shooters.
Have you been shooting with any of Sony's new prime lenses this year? Cast your vote and let us know.
Sony FE 135mm F1.8 GM Sony FE 35mm F1.8 Sony FE 600mm F4 GM OSS Tamron
Tamron launched three prime lenses this year, including a new reference prime in the 'SP' (Special Performance) range. The SP 35mm F1.4 is a large, heavy but very sharp medium wideangle for Canon and Nikon DSLRs, whereas the 24mm and 35mm F2.8 Di III are lightweight, everyday options for mirrorless photographers.
Do any of the three deserve a place in our final list of best primes of 2019? Cast your vote and let us know.
Tamron SP 35mm F1.4 Di USD Tamron 24mm F2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 Tamron 35mm F2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 Zeiss
We've never seen the Zeiss Otus in person, but if it's anything like Zeiss's previous Otus-series lenses, it's likely to be a seriously impressive piece of glass. But is it one of the best prime lenses of the year? Let us know.

"I am a sucker for 50mm lenses. I have seven of them: Leica SL Summilux, Leica M Summicron APO, Leica M Summicron (vintage), Leica f1 Noctilux, the Canon 0.95 lens, Konica Hexar f1.2, and Canon f/1.4 lens. Only one of them — the SL Summilux — is an auto focus lens. It is also my least favorite lens.
"I usually walk out of the house with the M Summicron APO attached to my SL. It is what I use to shoot most of my landscapes. I keep it wide open, and I use ND filters to control the light hitting the sensors. Sometimes, I will use a combination of a 10-stop ND filter from Wine Country Camera, in tandem with a 6-stop or a 3-stop filter, to create a special look that comes from shooting with aperture at f2. The M Summicron f2/50 APO lens is of exceptional quality, and even at f2, it is tack sharp. It renders the scenes beautifully and has that Leica look.
"So for me, the new SL Summicron f2/50mm APO lens had to be at least competitive with, if not better than, my current set-up. After ten days, I can say that the pre-release prototype does hold its own. Sure, it is nowhere close to beating its M counterpart, but it is a worthy progeny. I am not a pixel peeper, and I don’t know the technical jargon like most professional reviewers. But what I can see is the similarities in the DNG files coming from the two lenses."

Prezzo US: $1499

Samyang unveils 'premium' XP 50mm F1.2 lens for 50MP sensors and 8K capture
It's official! 24 hours after product photos leaked online, the rumored Samyang/Rokinon XP 50mm F1.2 lens for Canon EF Mount has officially arrived. This is the third so-called "XP" lens—the first two, which were announced in 2016, were the XP 85mm F1.2 and XP 14mm F2.4—which are named for their 'Excellence in Performance.' That is: they're designed to resolve over 50 megapixels for photography purposes, and easily capture crisp 8K video.
Like those lenses, the XP 50mm F1.2 is manual focus and currently only made for the Canon EF mount. It boasts a 9-blade aperture, and is made from 8 groups of 11 lens elements, including one aspherical and one high-refractive lens element that promise to "deliver sharp and vivid images to camera sensors by effectively tuning the light path."
Finally, Samyang has also included its "ultra multi coating" to help ameliorate flare and ghosting. Here's a closer look at this lens:
And here are some sample photos, posted by Samyang on the new XP 50mm F1.2 product page alongside an MTF chart and detailed specs:
Samyang/Rokinon XP 50mm F1.2 spec sheet
The Samyang XP 50mm F1.2 will be available for purchase in March, at an expected retail price of 950 Euro (and very likely the same price in USD). To learn more, head over to the Samyang Global website.
Press Release
Samyang Optics Launches the Premium Photo Lens- XP 50mm F1.2
February 20th, 2018, Seoul, South Korea - Global optics brand, Samyang Optics (http://www.samyanglensglobal.com) is pleased to unveil the Premium Photo Lens - XP 50mm F1.2 for Canon full frame DSLR cameras. The XP 50mm F1.2 is the third lens of the premium line up, XP series, created under the motto of ‘Excellence in Performance’. The XP 50mm F1.2 lens is expected to expand the brand power of Samyang in the premium lens market thanks to its great image quality, following in the footsteps of the XP 14mm F2.4, XP 85mm F1.2.
The moment of the drama with absolute resolution
This lens, built for DSLR cameras, has a resolution of more than 50 megapixels for photography and 8K for video. The XP 50mm F1.2 manual focus lens enables you to capture those dramatic moments in perfect image quality with a bright F1.2 aperture. In particular, it optimizes for portraits, capturing the delicate change of the eye at the time of a portrait, right down to a strand of hair, and bright and beautiful skin colour. You can express unconstrained depth with the bright aperture, while the 9 blades also deliver beautiful bokeh, starburst, and out-focusing effects. Also, you can even achieve high image quality in low light conditions and indoors thanks to the fast shutter speed
Excellence in Performance
Produced from a total of 11 lenses in 8 groups, you can minimize distortion and various aberrations while producing crystal clear resolution. The special optic lenses, aspherical lens, and high-refractive lens deliver sharp and vivid images to camera sensors by effectively tuning the light path. Also, flare and ghost effects can be well controlled thanks to the ultra multi coating.
Available from March 2018
The absolute resolution XP 50mm F1.2 lens will be available in March at a suggested retail price of EUR 949. To celebrate the launch, Samyang Optics will hold various consumer events on Facebook and Instagram. For more information on the product, visit Samyang Optics' official website.
