Love and Literature from the Olympic Opening Ceremonies
I got so excited when I saw the costuming in this segment! It reminded me of a very specific and thrilling fashion moment in the spring of 1991 when I found this awesome L-O-V-E shirt in a boutique in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Then, a few months later on the way home to the U.S., we stopped in Amsterdam and I discovered that bold bright 60's wow fashion had landed and everyone's muse was Lady Miss Kier! And I did really feel that groove in my heart! I bought the colorful leggings and black patent daisy buckle belt you see in the picture and wore it on the plane. I'm so happy I still have this photo. I was about to turn 24, and between the LOVE shirt and the Amsterdam experience, it really was a fashion rebirth for me.

rules: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder regardless of how nondescript or ridiculous. let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! and then tag some people, if you want!
i was tagged by @antisociallilbrat and this got me to actually go through some of my wips bc some of them are SUPER old and forgotten about, but i still think they’re super fun and maybe i’ll do them one day!! so might as well share :3 (i’m gonna censor the ship names and stuff so it doesn’t get into tags)
“2 trans kings” - listen, i don’t come up with titles for things until i’m like 90% done so Most of them are just bullshit like this lol. this one is an atla zu/kka fic where both sokka and zuko are trans and in gay love with each other. that's it lol
"post calamity fic" - a reva/link fic where they fail in defeating ganon, but the champions survive and work for a decade or so to prepare to fight again.
"stand by free!" - a stand-by-me-inpsired free! story that actually exists in my head as a comic
"You and Me (Just Like Kindergarten)" - now we're in "things i'm actually working on" territory. this is my by/ler high school musical au!
"Molt" - creel/arke fic where instead of having powers, Henry is just trans.
"unnamed creel/arke porn zine" - not a fic but it's my zine idea that's just 40 year old man yaoi. possibly in 2 parts!
tags are open for anyone! this was fun hehe i forgot about a lot of my non-ST wips i had lying around in messy bullet point lists

this is an extremely 2013 post, is the thing. just as you can find cycles in music and fashion, you can see the same kind of loops in humor. there are people out there who've had 2013 ass tumblr posts noodling around in their head for years and are committing to their own comedy now, just as i had comedy from 00s forums and websites like Progressive Boink and 90s late night tv like Space Ghost Coast To Coast vibrating in my head and then poured out into the open in my own form. all comedy is, in some small, insignificant yet personally valuable form, the weight of history itself pressing forwards; creating an endless stack of layers that can be hard to see if you aren't explicitly looking for it or consciously documenting it the entire time.
this is how you get 'basketball dracula' feeling like a 2024 post even though i made it in 2013, and also how you get stuff like me making riffs on abbot and costello's "who's on first" elsewhere to this very day. we are all collectively participants in the history of comedy, even if unknowingly so. this is something i have thought about a lot, to a truly unnecessary degree, but it's a small thing that feels like a big thing to me, at least personally. that even through dumb jokes, in some small fashion, i am connecting with the past, the present, and the future, akin to how gravity connects all of us in some imperceptible way.
a stupid joke with enough punch enters through the waves of time and the brainwaves of people within it, building on it, modifying it, being inspired by it and making comedy of their own from it. like a radio message that echoes through the depths of the universe, but passing through time more than space. i will eventually be forgotten, and one day, 'basketball dracula' itself will be too. but the influence of this joke lingers, inspiring other's jokes - even inspiration built out of hatred of my jokes! - to contribute to the collective history of comedy, a wave that never stops rolling forward. it delights me to know that i, and others, are all part of this constant work in progress of comedy.
Tumblr media
most likely my best known joke is my riff on the pagliacci format. it is inpsired, like many are, as a riff on the 'Pagliacci' bit from Rorschach in Watchmen. but that bit in Watchmen is actually predated by many stories of the famous clown Joseph Grimaldi - close with writers like Charles Dickens and Lord Byron, no less - who had the same "but doctor," bleak joke applied to him. jokes build on jokes build on jokes, reverberating through history and the people within it, creating influences on our own humor that we eventually aren't even cognizant of. the past lives through to the present all within the history of a stupid joke.
this is all extremely overwrought and over the top to drag out of a dumbass "basketball dracula" joke, yes. but as i said, this is something i think about a lot, and i think about it especially with the stupidest jokes, instead of the big, 'meaningful' ones.
anyway, again: glad you are all still getting laughs out of "basketball dracula" to this day. i can only wonder what trails of influence my stupid jokes will have on other people's comedy, and the influence they in turn will have on other people's comedy, in another 11 years.
“we can’t be together, my love. for i am cursed to be a basketball dracula forever” said basketball dracula as he leapt into a solemn slam dunk from half court. his lover cried immediately

💗 "how do you show you care? what do people do that makes you feel loved?"
Honestly, I'm not completely sure. I think I show I care about people by trying to always do things for them, give them gifts, make them food?? but also I'm shit at gifts for like, birthdays n stuff cos I want to actually put effort in and make it something they want but sometimes I'm just not inpsired by anything within my price range and then four weeks later I'll see the perfect thing n go aw man but I just spent a bunch of money on books!!
To make me feel loved I like reassurance, but also like just. people spending time with me? wanting to spend time with me?? although to be fair people doing anything slightly out of the ordinary to me makes me feel so incredibly special like oh you bought me socks??? you made me a cup of tea??? you came and sat next to me????????
💌 "love letters or poetry? love songs or mixtapes? make out sessions or snuggling?"
Hm. Ok I love both love letters and poetry, I tend to do both for people. I suppose... actually no I have no idea which I prefer. Love letters I thiiiink but someone sitting down to write poetry for you is very nice.
mixtapes. love songs are stupid 90% of the time who wants to listen that shit.
hahaha both don't make me choose things (makeout sessions)

Animaniacs: King Yakko Review (Comission by BlahDiddy)
Tumblr media
Hello my beautiful technicolor rainbow! It’s time for Animaniacs, and while there is no balonga in my slacks there is one last christmas review for my friend to finish up, and after two visits to Acme Lab for the spinoff we’re finishing up with a look at Animaniacs proper.  Suprisingly for a show that stands so easily on it’s own it’s existance is entirely thanks to another show: Tiny Toon Adventures, which had largely the same staff, including ep and co-creator stephen speilberg and Todd Ruegger, who was brought aboard from A Pup Named Scooby Doo. Since TIny Toon was a colossal hit with tons of awards and merch, including some very good video games I wish Warner would find a way to re-release, I mean.. come on if disney can rerelease the disney afternoon games (If...not..for..switch), and LIon King and Aladdin games (If somehow FOR switch), then Warner, which has it’s own game stuido no less, can put together a collection of the good Tiny Toons games when the new show comes out soon.
Point is it was a mass sucess and Warner Bros likes money, so they had Speilberg try to get Rutger to come up with another show for the two of them to do, something with name value. Rutger found his inpsiration when seeing the iconic warner water tower and taking some platypus characters, came up with our heroes and the rest is history.. well okay he retooled them from plataups’ to early looney tunes and other toons style characters minus the racisim of say bosko the tall ink kid but still, the rest after that is history. And the rest of this review is after the cut
Tumblr media
The show was, and KINDA still is, a variety show: taking a page from looney tunes, as well as tex avery’s other work, the crew decided rather than just focus on the warners, to instead create a whole cast with various ensembles to work with so we got Pinky and the Brain, The Goodfeathers, Rita and Runt,  the Hip HIppos, Katie Kaboom, Chicken Boo, and my personal faviorite Slappy Squirrel.. and the bane of my existance, Buttons and Mindy.. or rather Mindy’s Mom. The kid did nothing wrong.  So naturally the first thing Animaniacs related I cover.. is an episode entirely breaking from format for one 20 something minute Warners cartoon. I do intend to do more animanics stuff in the future, so i’ll hopefully get a chance to talk about everyone, I just feel unlike with say house of mouse most people reading this probably know who they all are, and I can save any deep dives for if I cover the characters specifically. Spoilers: there’s probably never going to be a buttons and mindy deep dive unless someone tourtues me by paying for it.
So with that out of the way, we can dive into the episode.. which I won’t be covering in my usual recap it point by point because the writers have freely admitted that’s not what Animaniacs is about. While some of i’ts SEGMENTS are more story based like Pinky and the Brain, Goodfeathers and Rita and Runt, most are just based on simple set ups to reams and reams of gags. And I love it. I grew up with this stuff not just Tiny Tunes and Animaniacs but the classic Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry and Droopy shorts.
Tumblr media
Their well timed, well executed feats of comedy and most have aged pretty well.. emphasis on MOST. I’m keenly aware why there are several gaps in the shorts for both Tom and Jerry and The Looney Tunes on HBO Max, including all of the Pepe LePew and Speedy Gonzalez shorts. Also all of Droopy is missing.
Tumblr media
My grumblin aside though, it is VERY NICE to have all the classic Warner and Tom and Jerry shorts at my fingertips and it was one of the biggest selling points of Max for me. Last year I gained an intrest in the old disney theatrical shorts, hence my various birthday specials, so I BADLY wanted to revisit the theatrical shorts I grew up with. And honestly.. Max is the best way to do that: their in crisp hd, in neat season collections (Though the Looney Tunes one is better sorted, tom and jerry’s seasons are just.. random smatterings of shorts across various eras), and most importantly EVERY SHORT they felt comfortable with putting up there is on there. Every. Single. One.  I make a big deal about this because Disney.. has only maybe 30-40 of their hundreds of shorts on there. Now lucky for me the vast majority are still on youtube and I get why some really arne’t suitable.. we probably don’t need the donald duck short where he prepares to shoot a penguin in the face or the Goofy short where his own reflection, the goofy equilvent of tyler durden I guess?, keeps saying “Hey Fat” to him. And yes BOTH of these actually happened. But.. there’s MANY shorts with no clear excuse why their absent like the triplets first apperance, gus’ only apperance, and one a friend told me about.. that time mickey built a robot to box a gorillia. Again not making this up, just wondering why you can’t restore the rest of these for plus. They’ve ADDED shorts ocasionally, but it still dosen’t make a whole lot of sense to just.. not have them all up there. and to not put them in some sorta collection for easier consumption but hey it’s Disney. They either full ass things or half ass it. There is no middle ground.  Point is Warner.. actually cares about their heritage in shorts and honors it and thus has everything avaliable in the best quality, so tha’ts nice.
My point after that detour is I really love this kind of humor, and now as an adult I can see the effort the timing, pacing and character chemistry these shorts had takes. And Rugger and co.. they got it. They got it down perfect. And this episode is a great show of that and just how they barely updated this format for the 90′s. But as I said it’s more about the jokes and basic setup, our heroes are slotted into x scenario and just left to run wild. It’s been the basic seutp for looney tunes, tom and jerry and all the gag based greats, and it works perfectly here. Sure there’s some setting and continuity with the warner lot, scratch n sniff, ralph, plotz and in the reboot Rita, but it’s mostly just our heroes go up against “X asshole” and it just works.
And that’s.. entirley what this episode is. The short is an homage to the graucho marx film Duck Soup, which given the warners were based on the marx brothers that isn’t a huge suprise, a film like brian’s song I have not seen, but genuinely want to. The basic setup is the same: An underqualified womanizer, though since htis is Yakko it dosen’t get past hitting on his chancelor, played by hello nurse, constantly, which is still.. ewwwww... but clearly not the same thing, becomes king of a small nation and ends up at war with another country. There were spies and other stuff in the original short but that was left out to streamline things.  But this homage stands on it’s own fine: The basic plot is this: Yakko, due to being a distant relative and the last one alive, becomes king of the small happy and very musical, as the wonderful opening number shows, country of Anvilania, which makes anvils and why yes there is one MASSIVE anvil gag as a result at the end. Yakko says he’ll try his best and geninely tries to with the shenanigans you’d expect, including Dot not gettnig Polka Dot’s are a thing and instead taknig any mention of it as a sign to polka, Yakko again hitting on his colleague and wanting ot get a new anthem because the current one by “Perry Coma’ puts people to sleep. Honeslty that gag didn’t do it for me: Partly because I genuinely know next to nothing about Como and he’s far past my generation.. and because despite this, SCTV did a MUCH better Perry Como gag over a decade before this episode that while still left me baffled as to why anyone cared about mocking him, was 80 times funnier and felt far less like you needed to know who he was to be funny.
youtube
That being said it’s one of only three running gags, and jokes period that didn’t land for me. The other ones being the hello nurse bits, because it’s aged really badly to have Yakko harass one of his employees and his age is hte only thing that keeps it from scuttling the episode as he’s just 13 or 14. Maybe 15.
Tumblr media
So SO glad I now have that on hand whenever i need it. The other being the “Your highness” joke as it just.. dosen’t make much sense and isn’t very funny. But that’s it: a refrence i specfically don’t get and I doubt most of you will, and if you do fine we all have our frames of refrences, a joke that’s dated very poorly, and one that just.. didn’t land. And even then the Perry Coma thing’s third use to knock out the opposing army DID work for me as did the VERY clever joke of “Sire” “Maybe later”, so even the weaker bits still had some legs.  But getting back to what little plot there is the king of the rival country, upon hearing this, assumes he can easily intimidate a child into giving him the throne and goes to a royal reception. Instead, as you’d expect, the Warners mistake him for a party clown, show him no respect and fail to take his delcration of war seriously, and while in a REALLY great gag, and the reason i’m not doing a strict summary is 90% of the review would be me saying something to that effect, Yakkos’ call to action for his troops ends up having them all run off in fear, the Warners take out the army as noted above and then in one of the most GLORIOUS climaxes in the series history...
Tumblr media
In which the Warners give the bad guy “all the anvils” as he requested. I sadly coulnd’t find a clip of it but seek it out if you got hulu, my words can’t do it justice as they hit him with anvil after anvil in increasingly clever and insane ways till the guy finally gives up and it .. is glorious.  Other highlights not already mentioned include: The opening song, the bad guy dictator from the other nation not being able to hear because of his helmet and his attendee having to lift it, leading to Yakko taking off his helmet just to end the “what’ running gag, Yakko’s bit explaning his distant relation and more.  So yeah not a ton to say on this one. It’s a very good, very funny episode but also very typical of a warner cartoon in structure, just stretched over 22 or so minutes. As I said with few exceptions the jokes work, the anmation is crisp as always, and the climax is one of the series best. A crisp, quick watch and a nice quick review after a week of with some really tough ones behind me and ahead of me and a month of rather large ones a few weeks out. So yeah if you like animaniacs, even ifyou’ve seen this one worth a watch, if you have any more animaniacs you’d like me to take a look at feel free to comment or comission and until the next rainbow..

Made this piece for @FEMM's new single album; "My Revolution / Konya wa Boogie Back (nice vocal)" featuring also; @fakyjp and @y__u__p It's out now so fet your greasy hands on it. Also check out @FEMM a great pop mannquin duo from Japan. Enjoyed making this cover, bit of work and a lot of hours went into the background which was inpsired by AKIRA's city scape mixed with a 90s color inpsired mash up. These pieces come around rarely since the whole background is all ink, it becomes quite labour intensive, though I would love to make similar works in the future when I have more time to myself. #illustration #art #work #background #album #cover #ink #brush #pen #FEMM #FAKY #Yupin #MyRevolution #今夜はブギーバック #surreal #cityscape #Mpvisual

Hi! Saw yesterday the posts about Oikawa`s outfits in your AU, so I am a bit late. But I wanted to tell you I am really impressed by all the outfits you came up with for pretty much everyone.
Mmmmmm THANK YOU!!!! asdfdgfhghfgdfs (/)//(/) Ahh I get inspired by lots of things…by the things I wear, by the things I like, by the things I see walking down the streets, by the things my friends and classmates wear, the things I see online, by photos…so many things!!!When it comes to the Hip Hop Au I’m also inspired by music artists.
Like the style I have for Iwaizumi is inspired by some old school simple Hip Hop style and mainly by the Rapper Slug and also a little by the rapper Evidence. So simple loose jeans, simple big hoodies…hats..things like this.
Kuroo is more based on a Hip Hop style like Wu-Tang-Clan and some other old school style which isn’t as simple and underground as the one for Iwaizumi. Also Kuoor’s style is inpsired by some late 90′s and early 2000 skater/slightly late grunge style. So he wears a mix of things. The same goes for Kenma who’s style is also inspired by some 90′s grunge and modern hipster style. Oikawa is more modern hispter and some weird Hip Hop style. He is all over the place
So yes, I get inspired by old Music Videos and things I come across online and mostly what I see walking around and what people around me wear.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

This year continues to be a year of firsts for me – first art fair, first invitational solo exhibit…and now, my first-ever art retreat class at a remote location!
I applied for the ArtStart Rhinelander‘s School of the Arts retreat called Art in Nature back in May.  I had heard about it through Arts Wisconsin – the School of the Arts has a rich, 60-year history and ArtStart is revitalizing it, which is wonderful news.  So imagine my delight when I discovered that I would be teaching my proposed class, “Collagraphs from Nature” there!
The entire retreat was held on the Treehaven grounds.  This place is AMAZING.  Imagine a fully modern summer camp, and you get the gist of the place.  It’s used year-round, mainly by UW-Stevens Point forestry students.  It’s nestled in the middle of nowhere, in Tomahawk, Wisconsin.  It’s truly remote – I felt so secure in its isolation.  I love places like this. (MAJOR bonus – it was about 15 degrees cooler there than in Fond du Lac, where we’re having a bizarre heat wave of 90 degree weather this week!)
My sweet room in the White Pines cabin!
Don’t you just love this handmade sign for the gift shop? 😀
This is the Winterberry Dining Hall. I felt like I was back at family camp!
I arrived on Friday afternoon and immediately set up my room.  I was so happy I could do this ahead of time, because then I could relax the rest of the evening.  We all had dinner together and heard the keynote speaker, Kristin Thielking, who’s a professor of sculpture at UW-Stevens Point.  She talked about the beautiful structures and installations she and her students create in natural settings.  It was so inpsiring, as it was the first time I’d ever really been interested in large sculptures.  I broadened my mind as to what a “sculpture” could truly be!  And now I have some ideas for our own Gottfried Prairie and Arboretum!
My class was right away on Saturday morning, so I ate breakfast with the group and got back to my classroom to make sure everything was set up and ready to go.  I had nine people in my class, which was a great size!  I showed them how to make collagraphs the way that I make them, and we had a total blast.  Here’s a slideshow of their beginning monoprints, their composing stages, and their final collagraphs, which were made from items found right on the Treehaven grounds or from some items I had gotten in our prairie.  Each student’s finished pieces were unlike anyone else’s, and that made me so happy. I absolutely LOVE it when that happens – when the artist’s vision comes through in their work.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
This teaching experience is another highlight in a year of highlights for me.  I enjoyed myself immensely!!  And to top it all off, I stayed for the afternoon and took Debra Jircik’s Harvest Papermaking class, which I’ve wanted to take for the past three years or so.  Kismet!  I loved it, as I knew I would.
Here we are with our papers made from corn husks, milkweed stalks, iris leaves, day lilies, and Abaca fiber with crushed leaves! They all turned out so beautifully.
It was one of those weekends I’ll always remember and cherish.  I was yet again reminded how extremely fortunate I am to be able to teach and create art in this way. It doesn’t get much better than this!  🙂  Many, many thanks to Melinda Childs and Ashley McLaughlin for just a wonderful retreat!
My Awesome Treehaven Experience! This year continues to be a year of firsts for me - first art fair, first invitational solo exhibit...and now, my first-ever art retreat class at a remote location!
