fem snowbaz is really fucked up- genderbending has transphobic connotations + baz is brown why did you whitewash him
Hi anon, thank you for your message. I assume this was you hoping to reach out and educate, and for that I am grateful. I’ve sat on this ask for a couple of hours trying to address your points and hopefully get across what the piece in question was trying to do.
For those OOTL, this is, I believe, in reference to my fem!Snowbaz/Sailor Moon crossover fanart.
TL;DR:
I didn’t know Fem!Snowbaz was problematic. I just thought it was fandom fun. I apologise for causing offense and being uneducated on the matter. Anon, if you are up for it, I am happy to hear/read the discourse on the matter (the tags aren’t exactly forthcoming).
I did not whitewash Baz - didn’t want to, didn’t intend to. Below is a longer explanation as to how I see Baz as a mix-raced character, and for my art, how I’ve portrayed him. In this one instance, I admit that the watercolor made him light(er) than my usual palette for him, but I’m still getting used to Clip Studio.
The Long Version:
On Gender-bending/fem!Snowbaz
I honest didn’t know that fem!snowbaz, or indeed genderbending characters, had transphobic connotations. Ignorance isn’t an excuse, but I do hope that you will forgive me and allow me the opportunity to learn, educate myself. It was never my intention to make it out that the piece was a comment on gender, or one’s trans identity.
I had seen many works from others in the fandom on the two, and that Rainbow also reblogged several of the pieces. So I thought I’d join in on the fun.
Thank you for pointing this out to me otherwise I genuinely wouldn’t have known.
Once again, I apologise for the post.
On Whitewashing
I did not whitewash Baz. That was never my intention, nor do I want to whitewash Baz.
I will accept criticism that I don’t colour well (I know), and that my colour theory is shit (I know). I will also accept my art looks crunchy at the best of the times, if not outright wonky (I know. I’m practicing to get better).
If you look back on my art, Baz has always been drawn brown. I made it clear with my cover art where I stand on Baz. Where I have not mentioned in the fic, there was cover art (it’s always in the the first chapter...giving the reader a visual reference to what I have in my head).
In my one fic where I didn’t colour in the cover art, I’ve explicitly said the fact that Baz is brown.
The sole exception of this is in the Star Wars AU where I gave a plot reason for his paleness/unnatural grey pallid skintone. Star Wars vampirism, if you will. Not because I can’t imagine anyone dark skinned being a Jedi/Sith Lord, but narratively, I felt tapping into the vampirism of Star Wars canon would be fun. Much like how Baz got Carbonited because...well, Numpties.
This was my first time using Clip Studio and digital watercolor pens. I used the exact same colour as the base colour from my previous pieces, following a tutorial. I went over the skin three/four times to get the colour to layer. I’m still learning, but regardless of my skill level, I made it a point to ensure that Simon (who is, for all intents purposes, white) not look the same as Baz.
The style of drawing I was referencing was Naoko Takeuchi’s own art from the Sailor Moon manga. In particular, Sailor Pluto. With her being specifically dark(er) skinned, I referenced her. This comes through more obviously in the black and white manage pages than in the coloured art. (That and the 90s anime whitewashed her in R, and arguably redeemed themselves slightly in S and Stars).
Obviously, referencing a Japanese woman’s take on what dark/brown skin means may be misguided on my part. Once again, I apologise.
And for Baz’s actual self, I referenced Andrew Ridgley (former member of Wham!) that Rainbow based Baz on. Andrew is of partial Egyptian descent as well, on his father’s side (half Italian and Egyptian). I assumed this was what Rainbow had in mind, and therefore what I had in mind when I picture Baz in non-vampire settings.
I also looked to Kevin Wada (who did the cover art) and how he, using markers, water colours and digital brushes that mimic these materials.
Obviously, skin tone/skin color isn’t a science. Mix-raced people aren’t the perfect 50/50 mix of their parents. Hence I took some liberties myself, and gave Baz the colour palette I gave, keeping in mind that he’s not (fully) white.
In short, I never saw Baz as White British. Without vampirism, I doubt he’d be pasty English just by virtue of what we know of his lineage.
