Ma – a estética do “entre” Ma (間) es un término japonés que podría traducirse como pausa, espacio, abertura o intervalo. No es simplemente un vacío o la ausencia de contenido sino que se trata de un espacio consciente, una respiración que permite poner en valor las otras partes de la obra o incluso crear nuevos significados. Según la filosofía japonesa, ese espacio estaría lleno de energía, y podría inducir un estado contemplativo en el cual es posible apreciar la expansión del espacio y del tiempo.

The ass between two chairs és el títol del taller proposat per l’artista Arash Nassiri, que expressa la incòmode sensació d’estar entre dues coses, dos estats. Justament és l’estat en què l’Escola Massana es troba actualment, en el trànsit de l’an1.tic edifici a un de nova planta. Quins contextos de sentit ens aporta la noció “entremig” (in-between)? En arquitectura es parla d’espais “entremig” com aquells espais articuladors, connectors i comunicadors entre el dins i l’afora, però també d’espais habitats temporalment. Al seu torn, el camp del pensament ens parla d’un estar en suspens, inacabat o en trànsit permanent. Què identifica doncs els sabers i els espais “entremig”? A que fa referència el treball artístic quan se situa “entremig”? Aquest seminari s’adreça a teixir perspectives sobre el valor de “l’entremig” des de la filosofia, la geografia, l’arquitectura, l’art i l’antropologia, que ens ajudin a indagar nous espais de creació i de visió crítica sobre el nostre context immediat.

i stg i am never coming back to california for longer than two weeks. i keep to my fucking self here but i went downstairs for the sole purpose of watching jeopardy and my dad would not shut up through the whole thing. i have a LOT of trouble understanding speech when im listening to two things at once (i also have like an auditory processing delay and shit - basically i need subtitles for life unless the room is silent) so, as with every fucking time i go down to watch jeopardy, i told him to be quiet. hes also really rude and makes fun of the ppl if they get anything wrong and calls them stupid and just is unnecessarily negative and i hate it so much! he does that with any show but i just ask him to be quiet for 20 minutes during jeopardy and he cant!! and i go downstairs to watch it with my family bc i guess its nice of me to do and it makes them hate me less but after 7 times of my dad talking and me not being able to understand a show that is mostly just speech i made a snarky remark abt something he said and like told him to be quiet basically. so he called me a piece of shit and went upstairs to break things. so basically i hate him and want to leave. as i have for my entire life. summer literally cannot end fast enough i need therapy back

also my dad obvs texted my mom all angry because he isnt a fucking adult and cant talk to me (i was calm. he was fucking livid) and she was like cameron you need to talk to him and say youre sorry and whatever. and i said no. I DONT HAVE TO SAY SORRY. HES A FUCKING FIVE YEAR OLD. I DONT NEED TO APOLOGIZE FOR HIS BEHAVIOUR. sure, i could have said it a little nicer, but after 7 fucking times every single day i just CANT SAY THINGS NICELY ANYMORE. at least i dont scream and tell people theyre a piece of shit. he doesnt deserve my fucking apology and he never will

#March  15th -Entry

As an absolute beginner of composition, I was extremely nervous and confused when I got into this assignment. I have no idea about the functions of GarageBand and therefore, i decided to get familiar with the app first. First of all, I learned how to use “drums” functions and started to use drums writing my own rhythm . I found that it was quite interesting!!

March 17th:)   Listening ideas.

After learning the functions and listening to the sounds of instruments again and again, I had a preliminary understanding to ‘sound’. This means, I needed to figure out what instruments I want to use and what kind of style i want for my track. Therefore, I listened to various hip-pop songs to acquire some ideas. I was attracted by a hip-pop song that someone posted on Wechat moment so I wanted to compose a similar one. Here is the song:))

March 18th First try!~

Firstly, I only used 4 tracks and I putted simple drums and low sound bass until 4th section. Also, I wanted a gradually intense rhythm since I learned “layer” in the class so I tried to add electronic guitar , vocal and some loops after the 4th section. From 9th section I reduced some loops because the professor had mentioned that try not to be too intensive for the whole track. (only took a vague photo at that time🫣🫣)

 March19th  Challenges:(

Although I adjusted these tracks for several times, I still couldn’t find a satisfying melody. I spent the whole afternoon to listened to different kinds of loops and sources but no results. (The most helpless moment) Moreover, I started worried about my structure that I had no ideas how to continue the following sections. Should it be intense or mild? Should it be a different style from the beginning? (Anxious😭

March 20th  Overcome!!

As I still couldn’t get an appropriate melody from loops and other sources ,I decided to create the melody by myself. I have learned playing drums before so I got some foundations of playing instruments. Those concepts are similar so I decided to have a try. First, I chose “ piano” and composed myself. It was quite challenging that I need to listened to musical scale one by one and figured out my own style. (First try)

After listening for few times, single sound of piano is a little monotonous and therefore I created new tracks with ‘bass’ and combing these two instrument as my melody!

As for the structure, I suddenly realised there is a structure map provided by professor that the map illustrated clearly how to allocate the melody, loops, and other textures. So I just followed the map to allocate my tracks which was extremely helpful!!!

March 23rd First version

I added some loops which is sound like textures at the beginning and allocate the main melody, bass and percussion music loops following the structure. However, after listening several times, I found that the main melody was too intensive and the whole track was not quite harmony. Therefore, I decided to ask some advices from my friends who major in music. They  suggested me composing a relatively mild melody would be better. 

March 24th -Second version of melody 

I rewrote a main melody and create two tracks using this melody but with different timbre-Finally satisfying!!

March 27th -EQ and effects

Although the melody, bass and other loops are relatively satisfying, professor has mentioned the importance of EQ and effects since these two functions would bring ‘contrast’ to the whole track. Therefore, I made some fluctuations. 

March 29th- Done!!!

Adjusting for some little details and listened to the final version again and again. It should be the final version~It really brings me a sense of achievement that Maggie ‘s first track is done~!🦧

I think I want to become an engineer. I somewhat rekindled my passion for learning how things work. Not just the surface level but the mechanisms behind my computer, cables, monitor, graphics card, stove, cars, air conditioner, assembly lines, radio, wireless networks. About materials such as ceramic, steel, concrete, glass, copper. Human mind and body, nutrition, exercise. The way society is and what money means. How global economy works. The way we perceive art. How colors and form works. The future of art and technology and new mediums. GOAL: I got to study so I can return to UCLA, get my degree, get a job, and live alone to pursue my thoughts and ideas and goals.
